Purpose stated for the course is to provide the student with information about electrical fundamentals, transistors, telephony and telephone systems, and telephone station installation, testing, and maintenance. The four-volume course consists of four texts with reading assignments: Introduction (2 chapters), Telephone Construction and Repair (3 chapters), Substation Installation (5 chapters), and Key Systems and Intercommunications (6 chapters). The four volumes of the student workbook correspond with the volumes of the text. Each workbook contains objectives, a study reference guide, and chapter and volume review exercises with answers. This block on solid state principles contains five modules covering 72 hours of instruction on PN junctions and diodes (12 hours), transistors (12), amplifier principles (22), troubleshooting solid state amplifiers (12), and selected solid state devices (14). Printed instructor materials include a plan of instruction detailing the units of instruction, duration of the lessons, criterion objectives, and support materials needed. Student materials include a student text; five guidance packages containing objectives, assignments, and review exercises for each module; and a comprehensive programmed text on solid state devices. A digest of the modules in the block is provided for students who need only to review the material. This self-study course is designed to familiarize Marine Corps enlisted personnel with the principles of solid-state devices and their functions. The course contains four study units. This module is intended to provide an understanding of the principles related to heat transfer. The objectives are designed to enable the learner to select and install a device for measuring the temperature of a power transistor, determine power ratings, measure the transient response for a power level and its final equilibrium temperature. Other objectives include being able to find thermal resistance and the time constant of the system; use thermal resistance, final temperature, and time constant to find heat capacity; find final temperature for any power input and an operating point; find the factors affecting thermal resistance; and lower the thermal resistance to improve dissipation of power.
