We report comprehensive pair distribution function measurements of the hole-doped iron-based superconductor system Sr1-xNaxFe2As2. Structural refinements performed as a function of temperature and length scale reveal orthorhombic distortions of the instantaneous local structure across a large region of the phase diagram possessing average tetragonal symmetry, indicative of fluctuating nematicity. These nematic fluctuations are present up to high doping levels (x=0.48, near optimal superconductivity) and high temperatures (above room temperature for x=0, decreasing to 150 K for x=0.48), with a typical length scale of 1-3 nm. This work highlights the ubiquity of nematic fluctuations in a representative iron-based superconductor and provides important details about the evolution of these fluctuations across the phase diagram.

Porous solids can accommodate and release molecular hydrogen readily, making them attractive for minimizing the energy requirements for hydrogen storage relative to physical storage systems. However, H 2 adsorption enthalpies in such materials are generally weak (-3 to -7 kJ/mol), lowering capacities at ambient temperature. Metal-organic frameworks with well-defined structures and synthetic modularity could allow for tuning adsorbent-H 2 interactions for ambient-temperature storage. Recently, Cu 2.2 Zn 2.8 Cl 1.8 (btdd) 3 (H 2 btdd = bis(1 H -1,2,3-triazolo-[4,5- b ],[4',5'- i ])dibenzo[1,4]dioxin; Cu I -MFU-4 l ) was reported to show a large H 2 adsorption enthalpy of -32 kJ/mol owing to π-backbonding from Cu I to H 2 , exceeding the optimal binding strength for ambient-temperature storage (-15 to -25 kJ/mol). Toward realizing optimal H 2 binding, we sought to modulate the π-backbonding interactions by tuning the pyramidal geometry of the trigonal Cu I sites. A series of isostructural frameworks, Cu 2.7 M 2.3 X 1.3 (btdd) 3 (M = Mn, Cd; X = Cl, I; Cu I M-MFU-4 l ), was synthesized through postsynthetic modification of the corresponding materials M 5 X 4 (btdd) 3 (M = Mn, Cd; X = CH 3 CO 2 , I). This strategy adjusts the H 2 adsorption enthalpy at the Cu I sites according to the ionic radius of the central metal ion of the pentanuclear cluster node, leading to -33 kJ/mol for M = Zn II (0.74 Å), -27 kJ/mol for M = Mn II (0.83 Å), and -23 kJ/mol for M = Cd II (0.95 Å). Thus, Cu I Cd-MFU-4 l provides a second, more stable example of optimal H 2 binding energy for ambient-temperature storage among reported metal-organic frameworks. Structural, computational, and spectroscopic studies indicate that a larger central metal planarizes trigonal Cu I sites, weakening the π-backbonding to H 2 .

Phase-pure polycrystalline Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 was prepared and determined to adopt the noncentrosymmetric polar crystal structure (space group Cmc 2 1 ) based on results of second harmonic generation, convergent beam electron diffraction, and Rietveld refinements using powder neutron diffraction data. The crystal structure features zigzag chains of corner-shared trimers, which contain three distorted face-sharing octahedra. The three metal sites in the trimers are occupied by disordered Ru/Mn with three different ratios: Ru1:Mn1 = 0.202(8):0.798(8), Ru2:Mn2 = 0.27(1):0.73(1), and Ru3:Mn3 = 0.40(1):0.60(1), successfully lowering the symmetry and inducing the polar crystal structure from the centrosymmetric parent compounds Ba 4 T 3 O 10 (T = Mn, Ru; space group Cmca ). The valence state of Ru/Mn is confirmed to be +4 according to X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. YbBO 3 is a member of the orthoborate family of materials which contains a triangular arrangement of Yb 3+ ions. Here we study the physical properties of YbBO 3 with neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, specific heat, and ac susceptibility measurements. The neutron diffraction measurements confirm that our samples of YbBO 3 crystallize in the monoclinic space groupC2/c(#15) which contains two crystallographically distinct Yb 3+ sites decorating a slightly distorted triangular lattice. Heat capacity and ac susceptibility measurements indicate a potential transition to magnetic order at 0.4 K. In agreement with these observations, neutron diffraction measurements at 0.044 K observe magnetic Bragg peaks which can be indexed by a propagation vector of (0 0 1). Although determining a unique spin configuration corresponding to the observed magnetic Bragg peaks is not possible, model refinements indicate that the ordered moments are likely in the range of 0.4-0.9 μBand, notably, require moments on both Yb sites. In addition to the magnetic Bragg peaks, diffuse scattering at low Q is observed indicating that the transition does not correspond to complete long range magnetic order. The two-site picture for YbBO 3 is further evidenced by the number of crystal field excitations observed by inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Together these results show that YbBO 3 is a two-site triangular lattice material with signatures of long-range order as well as shorter ranged spin correlations., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

Competition among exchange interactions is able to induce novel spin correlations on a bipartite lattice without geometrical frustration. A prototype example is the spiral spin liquid, which is a correlated paramagnetic state characterized by subdimensional degenerate propagation vectors. Here, using spectral graph theory, we show that spiral spin liquids on a bipartite lattice can be approximated by a further-neighbor model on the corresponding line-graph lattice that is nonbipartite, thus broadening the space of candidate materials that may support the spiral spin liquid phases. As illustrations, we examine neutron scattering experiments performed on two spinel compounds, ZnCr_{2}Se_{4} and CuInCr_{4}Se_{8}, to demonstrate the feasibility of this new approach and expose its possible limitations in experimental realizations.

Spinel oxides are an ideal setting to explore the interplay between configurational entropy, site selectivity, and magnetism in high-entropy oxides (HEOs). In this work, we characterize the magnetic properties of the spinel (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) 3 O 4 and study the evolution of its magnetism as a function of nonmagnetic gallium substitution. Across the range of compositions studied here, from 0 to 40% Ga, magnetic susceptibility and powder neutron diffraction measurements show that ferrimagnetic order is robust in the spinel HEO. However, we also find that the ferrimagnetic order is highly tunable, with the ordering temperature, saturated and sublattice moments, and magnetic hardness all varying significantly as a function of Ga concentration. Through X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism, we are able to correlate this magnetic tunability with strong site selectivity between the various cations and the tetrahedral and octahedral sites in the spinel structure. In particular, we find that while Ni and Cr are largely unaffected by the substitution with Ga, the occupancies of Mn, Co, and Fe are each significantly redistributed. Ga substitution also requires an overall reduction in the transition metal valence, and this is entirely accommodated by Mn. Finally, we show that while site selectivity has an overall suppressing effect on the configurational entropy, over a certain range of compositions, Ga substitution yields a striking increase in the configurational entropy and may confer additional stabilization. Spinel oxides can be tuned seamlessly from the low-entropy to the high-entropy regime, making this an ideal platform for entropy engineering.

Fe-substituted YFe x Cr 1-x O 3 crystalline compounds show promising magnetic and multiferroic properties. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of several compositions from this series. Using the autocombustion route, various compositions (x = 0.25, 0.50, 0.6, 0.75, 0.9, and 1) were synthesized as high-quality crystalline powders. In order to obtain microscopic and atomic information about their structure and magnetism, characterization was performed using room temperature X-ray diffraction and energy dispersion analysis as well as temperature-dependent neutron diffraction, magnetometry, and 57 Fe Mössbauer spectrometry. Rietveld analysis of the diffraction data revealed a crystallite size of 84 (8) nm for YFeO 3 , while energy dispersion analysis indicated compositions close to the nominal compositions. The magnetic results suggested an enhancement of the weak ferromagnetism for the YFeO 3 phase due to two contributions. First, a high magnetocrystalline anisotropy was associated with the crystalline character that favored a unique high canting angle of the antiferromagnetic phase (13°), as indicated by the neutron diffraction analysis. This was also evidenced by the high magnetic hysteresis curves up to 90 kOe by a remarkable high critical coercivity value of 46.7 kOe at room temperature. Second, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions between homogenous and heterogeneous magnetic pairs resulted from the inhomogeneous distribution of Fe 3+ and Cr 3+ ions, as indicated by 57 Fe Mössbauer studies. Together, these results point to new methods of controlling the magnetic properties of these materials.

Magnetic polar materials feature an astonishing range of physical properties, such as magnetoelectric coupling, chiral spin textures, and related new spin topology physics. This is primarily attributable to their lack of space inversion symmetry in conjunction with unpaired electrons, potentially facilitating an asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) exchange interaction supported by spin-orbital and electron-lattice coupling. However, engineering the appropriate ensemble of coupled degrees of freedom necessary for enhanced DM exchange has remained elusive for polar magnets. Here, we study how spin and orbital components influence the capability of promoting the magnetic interaction by studying two magnetic polar materials, α-Cu(IO 3 ) 2 ( 2 D) and Mn(IO 3 ) 2 ( 6 S), and connecting their electronic and magnetic properties with their structures. The chemically controlled low-temperature synthesis of these complexes resulted in pure polycrystalline samples, providing a viable pathway to prepare bulk forms of transition-metal iodates. Rietveld refinements of the powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction data reveal that these materials exhibit different crystal structures but crystallize in the same polar and chiral P 2 1 space group, giving rise to an electric polarization along the b -axis direction. The presence and absence of an evident phase transition to a possible topologically distinct state observed in α-Cu(IO 3 ) 2 and Mn(IO 3 ) 2 , respectively, imply the important role of spin-orbit coupling. Neutron diffraction experiments reveal helpful insights into the magnetic ground state of these materials. While the long-wavelength incommensurability of α-Cu(IO 3 ) 2 is in harmony with sizable asymmetric DM interaction and low dimensionality of the electronic structure, the commensurate stripe AFM ground state of Mn(IO 3 ) 2 is attributed to negligible DM exchange and isotropic orbital overlapping. The work demonstrates connections between combined spin and orbital effects, magnetic coupling dimensionality, and DM exchange, providing a worthwhile approach for tuning asymmetric interaction, which promotes evolution of topologically distinct spin phases.

Super Invar (SIV), i.e., zero thermal expansion of metallic materials underpinned by magnetic ordering, is of great practical merit for a wide range of high precision engineering. However, the relatively narrow temperature window of SIV in most materials restricts its potential applications in many critical fields. Here, we demonstrate the controlled design of thermal expansion in a family of R_{2}(Fe,Co)_{17} materials (R=rare Earth). We find that adjusting the Fe-Co content tunes the thermal expansion behavior and its optimization leads to a record-wide SIV with good cyclic stability from 3-461 K, almost twice the range of currently known SIV. In situ neutron diffraction, Mössbauer spectra and first-principles calculations reveal the 3d bonding state transition of the Fe-sublattice favors extra lattice stress upon magnetic ordering. On the other hand, Co content induces a dramatic enhancement of the internal molecular field, which can be manipulated to achieve "ultrawide" SIV over broad temperature, composition and magnetic field windows. These findings pave the way for exploiting thermal-expansion-control engineering and related functional materials.

CuAl 2 O 4 is a ternary oxide spinel with Cu 2+ ions ([Formula: see text]) primarily populating the A-site diamond sublattice. The compound is reported to display evidence of spin glass behavior but possess a non-frozen magnetic ground state below the transition temperature. On the other hand, the spinel CuGa 2 O 4 displays spin glass behavior at ~ 2.5 K with Cu 2+ ions more readily tending to the B-site pyrochlore sublattice. Therefore, we investigate the magnetic and structural properties of the solid solution CuAl 2(1-x) Ga 2x O 4 examining the evolution of the magnetic behavior as Al 3+ is replaced with a much larger Ga 3+ ion. Our results show that the Cu 2+ ions tend to migrate from tetrahedral to octahedral sites as the Ga 3+ ion concentration increases, resulting in a concomitant change in the glassy magnetic properties of the solution. Results indicate glassy behavior for much of the solution with a general trend towards decreasing magnetic frustration as the Cu 2+ ion shifts to the B-site. However, the [Formula: see text] and 0.2 members of the system do not show glassy behavior down to our measurement limit (1.9 K) suggesting a delayed spin glass transition. We suggest that these two members are additional candidates for investigation to access highly frustrated exotic quantum states.

The (Li 1- x Fe x OH)FeSe superconductor has been suspected of exhibiting long-range magnetic ordering due to Fe substitution in the LiOH layer. However, no direct observation such as magnetic reflection from neutron diffraction has been reported. Here, we use a chemical design strategy to manipulate the doping level of transition metals in the LiOH layer to tune the magnetic properties of the (Li 1- x-y Fe x Mn y OD)FeSe system. We find Mn doping exclusively replaces Li in the hydroxide layer resulting in enhanced magnetization in the (Li 0.876 Fe 0.062 Mn 0.062 OD)FeSe superconductor without significantly altering the superconducting behavior as resolved by magnetic susceptibility and electrical/thermal transport measurements. As a result, long-range magnetic ordering was observed below 12 K with neutron diffraction measurements. This work has implications for the design of magnetic superconductors for the fundamental understanding of superconductivity and magnetism in the iron chalcogenide system as well as exploitation as functional materials for next-generation devices.

We present the synthesis and magnetic characterization of a polycrystalline sample of the 6H-perovskite Ba 3 CeRu 2 O 9 , which consists of Ru dimers based on face-sharing RuO 6 octahedra. Our low-temperature magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and neutron powder diffraction results reveal a nonmagnetic singlet ground state for the dimers. Inelastic neutron scattering, infrared spectroscopy, and the magnetic susceptibility over a wide temperature range are best explained by a molecular orbital model with a zero-field splitting parameter D = 85 meV for the S tot = 1 electronic ground-state multiplet. This large value is likely due to strong mixing between this ground-state multiplet and low-lying excited multiplets, arising from a sizable spin molecular orbital coupling combined with an axial distortion of the Ru 2 O 9 units. Although the positive sign for the splitting ensures that Ba 3 CeRu 2 O 9 is not a single molecule magnet, our work suggests that the search for these interesting materials should be extended beyond Ba 3 CeRu 2 O 9 to other molecular magnets based on metal-metal bonding.

We present density functional theory and neutron total scattering studies on quasi-one-dimensional superconducting K_{2}Cr_{3}As_{3} revealing a frustrated structural instability. Our first principles calculations find a significant phonon instability, which, under energy minimization, corresponds to a frustrated orthorhombic distortion. In neutron diffraction studies we find large atomic displacement parameters with anomalous temperature dependencies, which result from highly localized orthorhombic distortions of the CrAs sublattice and coupled K displacements. These results suggest a more complex phase diagram than previously assumed for K_{2}Cr_{3}As_{3} with subtle interplays of structure, electron-phonon, and magnetic interactions.

The suite of neutron powder diffractometers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) utilizes the distinct characteristics of the Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor to enable the measurements of powder samples over an unparalleled regime at a single laboratory. Full refinements over large Q ranges, total scattering methods, fast measurements under changing conditions, and a wide array of sample environments are available. This article provides a brief overview of each powder instrument at ORNL and details the complementarity across the suite. Future directions for the powder suite, including upgrades and new instruments, are also discussed.

We report on temperature-dependent pair distribution function measurements of Sr_{1-x}Na_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}, an iron-based superconductor system that contains a magnetic phase with reentrant tetragonal symmetry, known as the magnetic C_{4} phase. Quantitative refinements indicate that the instantaneous local structure in the C_{4} phase comprises fluctuating orthorhombic regions with a length scale of ∼2  nm, despite the tetragonal symmetry of the average static structure. Additionally, local orthorhombic fluctuations exist on a similar length scale at temperatures well into the paramagnetic tetragonal phase. These results highlight the exceptionally large nematic susceptibility of iron-based superconductors and have significant implications for the magnetic C_{4} phase and the neighboring C_{2} and superconducting phases.
