Brewery waste water produces sludge with high organic content, which required proper treatment before disposal. The sludge is disposed to landfill creating contamination to the ground water and surface water due to high organic content. Also, it increases the salinity of crops and the environment. Since it has potential for energy production, it can be used in the country's coal-dependent cement industry due to its energy content. The objective of this study was to characterize brewery wastewater sludge and coal, to determine the optimum mix ratio and to see the effect of mixture fuel ash content on raw mix design. Characterization of coal using American Standard Testing Material 2009 and sludge using the World Health Organization method was done and also calorific value with different mixing ratio of coal and sludge determined by a bomb calorimeter in order to find the optimum mix. By using proportionating calculation, determining the effect of mixture fuel ash on the clinker and proportion of raw materials used is done. Brewery wastewater sludge has high moisture content and volatile matter compared to coal. Also, its ash content is higher than coal's. The caloric value of brewery wastewater sludge will not allow for using it without mixing. It is found that 70% coal and 30% sludge is the optimum mix ratio. Its high amount of SiO2 (45%), Al2O3 (14%), and Fe2O3 (11%) makes it possible to substitute some portion of clay and sand stone while our lime feed increases as a result. Since mixture fuel ash content is similar with cement raw materials, brewery wastewater sludge is a good alternative for the cement industry.

One of the ways of minimizing radiation risks to workers and the public is assessing potential sites that are suspected of producing radiation. Among such locations, quarry sites stand out because areas of granite and other rocks, especially those of uranium family potentially have high concentrations of radiation. This study was aimed to assess one such quarry sites (Hakim Gara site), located near Harar town, Harari region-Ethiopia. To assess the radiological impact of natural radioactivity of quarry activities in the study area, activity concentrations of natural radionuclides 238U, 232Th, 226Ra and 40K in the soil samples were investigated by collecting twenty composite soil samples from different sites of the area. Measurements were carried out using high purity germanium (HPGe) Gamma Spectrometry detecting system for acquisition of data and making analysis using Genie 2000 software. From the result, mean Activity concentration of 238U, 232Th and 40K obtained were 51.9 ± 15 Bq/kg, 68.32 ± 9.75 Bq/kg and 220.0 ± 2.0 Bq/kg, respectively. Average Activity concentration of the 226Ra was 32.71 ± 2.02 Bq/kg. These values were used to calculate and estimate the radiological risks due to environmental radiation exposure contributed from the quarrying activities. The average external and internal hazard indices were 0.45 ± 0.09 mSv/y and 0.49 ± 0.23 mSv/y both of which were below the permissible limit of unity. The results obtained for 238U and 232Th were higher and significant from the world average which need further regulatory monitoring. The level of 40K was below the world average. Hence, this research provided a foundation for future studies on subsequent investigations and to aid realistic regulatory and policy decisions.

Social network-based data collection methods that rely on third-party reporting have emerged as a promising approach for measuring abortion in restrictive settings. In order for these methods to accurately measure abortion incidence, they must also assess the visibility of abortions within social networks. Failure to do so may result in estimates affected by transmission bias, caused by imperfect knowledge of all abortions within one's social network. In this paper, we present exploratory research that uses respondent-driven sampling (RDS) and the game of contacts method to measure abortion visibility in four sites in Uganda and Ethiopia. We assess the existence of potential biases in the game of contacts estimate of abortion visibility in each site by conducting several internal and external validity tests. While these tests provided some promising results, other factors such as the representativeness of the RDS samples, direct versus indirect abortion knowledge transfers, and the generalizability of the study sites may have introduced biases into the final estimates of abortion visibility in this study. We conclude by making recommendations on how applications of this methodology could be improved to better estimate abortion-related transmission bias., (© 2024 The Author(s). Introduction: Opportunistic infections (OIs) are more common and severe among people with suppressed immunity like those living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH). This study aimed to assess the prevalence of OIs and associated factors among PLWH attending antiretroviral therapy (ART) clinics in the Gedeo zone, Southern Ethiopia., Methods: A facility based retrospective cohort study was conducted from April to June 2018 among PLWH attending ART clinics in Gedeo zone, Ethiopia from November 2016 - November 2017. A simple random sampling method was used to select the both paper based and electronic study participants' charts. Adjusted odds ratios were calculated using multivariable logistic regression analysis for variables statistically significant at 95% confidence interval under bivariable logistic regression analysis, and significance was declared at P < 0.05., Results: a total of 266 PLWH attended the selected ART clinics of Gedeo zone during the one year period were participated in the current study. The majority 104(39.1%) were within the age group 30-39, 106(60.2%) male, 184(69.2%) married, and 167(62.9%) urban residents. The study revealed the prevalence of OIs was 113(42.5%) with oral candidiasis 28(24.5%) the most prevalent followed by pulmonary tuberculosis 22(19.5%) and herpes zoster 15(13.4%). Further, study participants with ambulatory [AOR = 2.40(95% CI: 1.14, 5.03)], and bedridden [AOR = 3.27(95% CI:1.64, 6.52)] working functional status; with lower CD4 count: less than 200cells/mm 3 [AOR = 9.14(95% CI: 2.75, 30.39)], 200-350cells/mm 3 [AOR = 9.45(95% CI: 2.70,33.06)], 351-500cells/mm 3 [AOR = 5.76(95% CI: 1.71, 19.39)]; being poor in ART adherence level [AOR = 10.05(95% CI: 4.31,23.46)]; being in stage III/IV WHO clinical stage of HIV/AIDS [AOR = 2.72(95% CI: 1.42, 5.20)]; and being chewing khat [AOR = 2.84(95% CI: 1.21, 6.65)] were found positively predicting the occurrence of OIs., Conclusion: This study speckled a high prevalence of OIs with several predicting factors. Therefore, the study acmes there should be interventional means which tackles the higher prevalence of OIs with focus to the predicting factors like lower CD4 count level, less/bedridden working functional status, poor ART adherence level, advanced stage of HIV/AIDS stage and chewing khat., (© 2024. COVID-19 has affected all aspects of human life so far. From the outset of the pandemic, preventing the spread of COVID-19 through the observance of health protocols, especially the use of sanitizers and disinfectants was given more attention. Despite the effectiveness of disinfection chemicals in controlling and preventing COVID-19, there are critical concerns about their adverse effects on human health. This study aims to assess the health effects of sanitizers and disinfectants on a global scale. A total of 91,056 participants from 154 countries participated in this cross-sectional study. Information on the use of sanitizers and disinfectants and health was collected using an electronic questionnaire, which was translated into 26 languages via web-based platforms. The findings of this study suggest that detergents, alcohol-based substances, and chlorinated compounds emerged as the most prevalent chemical agents compared to other sanitizers and disinfectants examined. Most frequently reported health issues include skin effects and respiratory effects. The Chi-square test showed a significant association between chlorinated compounds (sodium hypochlorite and per-chlorine) with all possible health effects under investigation (p-value <0.001). Examination of risk factors based on multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that alcohols and alcohols-based materials were associated with skin effects (OR, 1.98; 95%CI, 1.87-2.09), per-chlorine was associated with eye effects (OR, 1.83; 95%CI, 1.74-1.93), and highly likely with itching and throat irritation (OR, 2.00; 95%CI, 1.90-2.11). Furthermore, formaldehyde was associated with a higher prevalence of neurological effects (OR, 2.17; 95%CI, 1.92-2.44). The use of sodium hypochlorite and per-chlorine also had a high chance of having respiratory effects. Background: Cervical cancer is preventable and remains a leading cause of avoidable death among women in the world. In a developing country, the knowledge of screening for cervical cancer behavior still very low. However, little is known about the knowledge towards cervical cancer screening of urban health extension workers in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess knowledge towards cervical cancer screening and associated factors among urban health extension workers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2020., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 312 urban health extension workers completed the survey in the Amharic language. Data collected using a structured questionnaire in a face-to-face interview. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were conducted using SPSS version 26., Results: The mean age of the urban health extension workers was 20.41 ± 3.73 years and 55.1% were married. The majority of the participants (75.6%) had diploma educational level, and 38.1% of them had 1-2 years of work experience. More than half (51.6%) of the participants had poor knowledge about cervical cancer screening. Participants with work experience of 5-6 years (AOR = 4.32: 95% CI = 1.71,10.94) and those who had a monthly income of 5000-10,000 ETB (AOR = 3.75: 95% CI = 1.49,9.41) and greater than > 10,000 ETB (AOR = 3.08: 95% CI =1.06, 8.98) were positively associated with knowledge towards cervical cancer screening among urban health extension workers, p-value< 0.05., Conclusion: This study indicated that the knowledge towards cervical cancer screening of urban health extension workers was inadequate. Urban health extension workers' work experiences and monthly income were found to be independent predictors of the knowledge towards cervical cancer screening of respondents. Therefore, urban health extension workers with low work experiences and those with small monthly income could be targeted for cervical cancer screening information and training interventions.

Background: Unsafe medication practices are the leading causes of avoidable patient harm in healthcare systems across the world. The largest proportion of which occurs during medication administration. Nurses play a significant role in the occurrence as well as preventions of medication administration errors. However, only a few relevant studies explored the problem in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the magnitude and contributing factors of medication administration error among nurses in tertiary care hospitals, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2018., Methods: We conducted a hospital-based, cross-sectional study in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The study involved 298 randomly selected nurses. We used adopted, self-administered survey questionnaire and checklist to collect data via self-reporting and direct observation of nurses while administering medications. The tools were expert reviewed and tested on 5% of the study participants. We analyzed the data descriptively and analytically using SPSS version 24. We included those factors with significant p -values ( p  ≤ 0.25) in the multivariate logistic regression model. We considered those factors, in the final multivariate model, with p  < 0.05 at 95%Cl as significant predictors of medication administration errors as defined by nurse self-report., Result: Two hundred and ninety eight (98.3%) nurses completed the survey questionnaire. Of these, 203 (68.1%) reported committing medication administration errors in the previous 12 months. Factors such as the lack of adequate training [AOR = 3.16; 95% CI (1.67,6)], unavailability of a guideline for medication administration [AOR = 2.07; 95% CI (1.06,4.06)], inadequate work experience [AOR = 6.48; 95% CI (1.32,31.78)], interruption during medication administration [AOR = 2.42, 95% CI (1.3,4.49)] and night duty shift [AOR = 5, 95% CI (1.82, 13.78)] were significant predictors of medication administration errors at p -value < 0.05., Conclusion and Recommendation: Medication administration error prevention is complex but critical to ensure the safety of patients. Based on our study, providing a continuous training on safe administration of medications, making a medication administration guideline available for nurses to apply, creating an enabling environment for nurses to safely administer medications, and retaining more experienced nurses may be critical steps to improve the quality and safety of medication administration., Competing Interests: Competing interestsThe authors declare that they have no competing interests., (© The Author(s). 2020.)

Background: At the end of Millennium development goals, Ethiopia was included among 10 countries which constitutes about 59% of maternal deaths due to complications of pregnancy and/or childbirth every year globally. Institutional delivery, which is believed to contribute in reduction of maternal mortality is still low. Hence this study was conducted in order to assess utilization of institutional delivery and related factors in Bench Maji zone, Southwest Ethiopia., Methods: Cross sectional study was employed from September 1st - 30th, 2015 in Bench Maji Zone, Southwest Ethiopia where 765 mothers who deliver 2 years preceding the study provided data for this research. Data were collected by enumerators who were trained. In addition to descriptive statistics, binary and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. Statistical significance was considered at a p-value < 0.05. Strength of association was also assessed using odds ratios with a 95% confidence intervals., Results: About 800 mothers were approached but 765 of them who gave birth 2 years preceding the survey participated and gave consent to the data included in the analysis. About 78.30% delivered their last child in health institution while rest gave birth at home. Factors such as maternal age, religion, occupation, availability of information source as TV/Radio, income quartile, residence, knowledge of problems during labor and antenatal follow up had association with institutional delivery which was significant., Conclusion: In Bench Maji Zone institutional delivery was shown to be comparatively good compared to other studies in the region and in Ethiopia in general even though it is below the health sector transformation plan of Ethiopia which aimed to increase deliveries attended by skilled health personnel to 95%. Empowering women, increasing awareness about institutional delivery and proper scaling up of antenatal care services which is an entry point for institutional delivery are recommended.

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is the best nutrition for children during the first six months of life. However EBF remains a challenge. The aim of the study was to assess Knowledge, Attitude and Practice towards EBF among breastfeeding mothers in Mizan Aman town, South West Ethiopia., Methods: A community based cross-sectional study was conducted among 350 mothers in Mizan Aman town, South West Ethiopia, in April 2015 using a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire using 'recall since birth' method. Systematic random sampling was used to select the study participants and descriptive statistics were conducted., Results: Three hundred and fourteen breastfeeding mothers with their index child less than 2 years were enrolled. Even though 93.6 % of study participants had heard about EBF, only 34.7 % were knowledgeable about the recommended duration. About 89.5 % had a positive attitude, but only 59.3 % believed that only EBF is enough for child up to six months and 26.4 % of children were exclusively breastfed for six months., Conclusion: The majority of mothers knew about EBF and had a positive attitude towards EBF but did not know the recommended duration or that EBF is sufficient for six months. We suggest improving access to information about recommended infant feeding guidelines and fulfilling the minimum enabling conditions.
