Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) operation is one of the open issues to be solved for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems to become a pillar of the future wireless infrastructure above 10 GHz. Existing NLOS countermeasures use either metallic mirrors, that are limited in coverage, or reconfigurable metasurfaces, that are limited in size due to cost. This paper focuses on integrated imaging and communication (IIAC) systems for NLOS exploration, where a base station (BS) serves the users while gathering a high-resolution image of the area. We exploit a large reflection plane, that is phase-configured in space and time jointly with a proper BS beam sweeping to provide a multi-view observation of the area and maximizing the image resolution. Remarkably, we achieve a near-field imaging through successive far-field acquisitions, limiting the design complexity and cost. We present SBTrust, a logical framework designed to formalize decision trust. Our logic integrates a doxastic modality with a novel non-monotonic conditional operator that establishes a positive support relation between statements, and is closely related to a known dyadic deontic modality. For SBTrust, we provide semantics, proof theory and complexity results, as well as motivating examples. Compared to existing approaches, our framework seamlessly accommodates the integration of multiple factors in the emergence of trust.

5. Sensing in NLOS: a Stroboscopic Approach

Sensing in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) is a well-known issue that limits the effective range of radar-like sensors. Existing approaches for NLOS sensing consider the usage of either metallic mirrors, that only work under specular reflection, or dynamically-reconfigurable metasurfaces that steer the signal to cover a desired area in NLOS, with the drawback of cost and control signaling. This paper proposes a novel sensing system, that allows a source to image a desired region of interest (ROI) in NLOS, using the combination of a proper beam sweeping (by the source) as well as a passive reflection plane configured as a periodic angular deflecting function (that allows illuminating the ROI). \textit{Stroboscopic sensing} is obtained by sweeping over a sufficiently large portion of the reflection plane, the source covers the ROI \textit{and} enhance the spatial resolution of the image, thanks to multiple diverse observation angles of ROI. Remarkably, the proposed system achieves a near-field imaging with a sequence of far-field acquisitions, thus limiting the implementation complexity. We detail the system design criteria and trade-offs, demonstrating the remarkable benefits of such a stroboscopic sensing system, where a possibly moving source can observe a ROI through multiple points of view as if it were static., Comment: 13 pages

We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

The sixth generation (6G) of wireless networks introduces integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), a technology in which communication and sensing functionalities are inextricably linked, sharing resources across time, frequency, space, and energy. Despite its popularity in communication, the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform, while advantageous for communication, has limitations in sensing performance within an ISAC network. This paper delves into OFDM waveform design through optimal resource allocation over time, frequency, and energy, maximizing sensing performance while preserving communication quality. During quasi-normal operation, the Base Station (BS) does not utilize all available time-frequency resources, resulting in high sidelobes in the OFDM waveform's ambiguity function, as well as decreased sensing accuracy. To address these latter issues, the paper proposes a novel interpolation technique using matrix completion through the Schatten p quasi-normal approximation, which requires fewer samples than the traditional nuclear norm for effective matrix completion and interpolation. This approach effectively suppresses the sidelobes, enhancing the sensing performance. Numerical simulations confirm that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art frameworks, such as standard complaint resource scheduling and interpolation, particularly in scenarios with limited resource occupancy.

This study addresses optimal impulsive trajectory design within the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem (CR3BP), presenting a global optimization-based approach to identify minimum $\Delta V$ transfers between periodic orbits, including heteroclinic connections. By combining a Monotonic Basin Hopping (MBH) algorithm with a sequential quadratic solver in a parallel optimization framework, a wide range of minimum $\Delta V$ transfers are efficiently found. To validate this approach, known connections from the literature are reproduced. Consequently, three-dimensional periodic orbits are explored and a systematic search for minimum propellant trajectories is conducted within a selected interval of Jacobi constants and a maximum time of flight. 9. The Logical Art of Keeping a True Secret

Logical investigations of the notion of secrecy are typically concentrated on tools for deducing whether private information is well hidden from unauthorized, direct, or indirect access attempts. This paper proposes a multi-agent, normal multi-modal logic to capture salient features of secrecy. We focus on the intentions, beliefs and knowledge of secret keepers and, more generally, of all the actors involved in secret-keeping scenarios. In particular, we investigate the notion of a true secret, namely a secret concerning information known (and so true) by the secret keeper. The resulting characterization of intending to keep a true secret provides useful insights into conditions ensuring or undermining secrecy depending on agents' attitudes and links between secrets and their surrounding context. We present soundness, completeness, and decidability results of the proposed logical system. Furthermore, we outline some theorems with applications in several contexts from computer science and social sciences.

Electromagnetic skins (EMSs) are recognized for enhancing communication performance, spanning from coverage to capacity. While much of the scientific literature focuses on reconfigurable intelligent surfaces that dynamically adjust phase configurations over time, this study takes a different approach by considering low-cost static passive curved EMS (CEMS)s. These are pre-configured during manufacturing to conform to the shape of irregular surfaces, e.g., car doors, effectively transforming them into anomalous mirrors. This design allows vehicles to serve as opportunistic passive relays, mitigating blockage issues in vehicular networks. This paper delves into a novel design method for the phase profile of CEMS based on coarse a-priori distributions of incident and reflection angles onto the surface, influenced by vehicular traffic patterns. A penalty-based method is employed to optimize both the average spectral efficiency (SE) and average coverage probability, and it is compared against a lower-complexity and physically intuitive modular architecture, utilizing a codebook-based discrete optimization technique. Numerical results demonstrate that properly designed CEMS lead to a remarkable improvements in average SE and coverage probability, namely when the direct path is blocked.

The nature of the minute-to-hour long Fast X-ray Transients (FXTs) localised by telescopes such as Chandra, Swift, and XMM-Newton remains mysterious, with numerous models suggested for the events. Here, we report multi-wavelength observations of EP240315a, a 1600 s long transient detected by the Einstein Probe, showing it to have a redshift of z=4.859. We measure a low column density of neutral hydrogen, indicating that the event is embedded in a low-density environment, further supported by direct detection of leaking ionising Lyman-continuum. The observed properties are consistent with EP240315a being a long-duration gamma-ray burst, and these observations support an interpretation in which a significant fraction of the FXT population are lower-luminosity examples of similar events. Such transients are detectable at high redshifts by the Einstein Probe and, in the (near) future, out to even larger distances by SVOM, THESEUS, and Athena, providing samples of events into the epoch of reionisation., Comment: 41 pages, 7 figures, submitted

In Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) systems, matching the radar targets with communication user equipments (UEs) is functional to several communication tasks, such as proactive handover and beam prediction. In this paper, we consider a radar-assisted communication system where a base station (BS) is equipped with a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar that has a double aim: (i) associate vehicular radar targets to vehicular equipments (VEs) in the communication beamspace and (ii) predict the beamforming vector for each VE from radar data. The proposed target-to-user (T2U) association consists of two stages. First, vehicular radar targets are detected from range-angle images, and, for each, a beamforming vector is estimated. Then, the inferred per-target beamforming vectors are matched with the ones utilized at the BS for communication to perform target-to-user (T2U) association. Joint multi-target detection and beam inference is obtained by modifying the you only look once (YOLO) model, which is trained over simulated range-angle radar images. Simulation results over different urban vehicular mobility scenarios show that the proposed T2U method provides a probability of correct association that increases with the size of the BS antenna array, highlighting the respective increase of the separability of the VEs in the beamspace. Moreover, we show that the modified YOLO architecture can effectively perform both beam prediction and radar target detection, with similar performance in mean average precision on the latter over different antenna array sizes.

Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) is one of the key pillars envisioned for 6G wireless systems. ISAC systems combine communication and sensing functionalities over a single waveform, with full resource sharing. In particular, waveform design for legacy Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems consists of a suitable time-frequency resource allocation policy balancing between communication and sensing performance. Over time and/or frequency, having unused resources leads to an ambiguity function with high sidelobes that significantly affect the performance of ISAC for OFDM waveforms. This paper proposes an OFDM-based ISAC waveform design that takes into account communication and resource occupancy constraints. The proposed method minimizes the Cram\'er-Rao Bound (CRB) on delay and Doppler estimation for two closely spaced targets. Moreover, the paper addresses the under-sampling issue by interpolating the estimated sensing channel based on matrix completion via Schatten $p$-norm approximation. Coherent multistatic radio imaging represents a pivotal opportunity for forthcoming wireless networks, which involves distributed nodes cooperating to achieve accurate sensing resolution and robustness. This paper delves into cooperative coherent imaging for vehicular radar networks. Herein, multiple radar-equipped vehicles cooperate to improve collective sensing capabilities and address the fundamental issue of distinguishing weak targets in close proximity to strong ones, a critical challenge for vulnerable road users protection. We prove the significant benefits of cooperative coherent imaging in the considered automotive scenario in terms of both probability of correct detection, evaluated considering several system parameters, as well as resolution capabilities, showcased by a dedicated experimental campaign wherein the collaboration between two vehicles enables the detection of the legs of a pedestrian close to a parked car. Moreover, as \textit{coherent} processing of several sensors' data requires very tight accuracy on clock synchronization and sensor's positioning -- referred to as \textit{phase synchronization} -- (such that to predict sensor-target distances up to a fraction of the carrier wavelength), we present a general three-step cooperative multistatic phase synchronization procedure, detailing the required information exchange among vehicles in the specific automotive radar context and assessing its feasibility and performance by hybrid Cram\'er-Rao bound., Comment: 13 pages

Much of what is known of the chemical composition of the universe is based on emission line spectra from star forming galaxies. Emission-based inferences are, nevertheless, model-dependent and they are dominated by light from luminous star forming regions. An alternative and sensitive probe of the metallicity of galaxies is through absorption lines imprinted on the luminous afterglow spectra of long gamma ray bursts (GRBs) from neutral material within their host galaxy. We present results from a JWST/NIRSpec programme to investigate for the first time the relation between the metallicity of neutral gas probed in absorption by GRB afterglows and the metallicity of the star forming regions for the same host galaxy sample. Using an initial sample of eight GRB host galaxies at z=2.1-4.7, we find a tight relation between absorption and emission line metallicities when using the recently proposed $\hat{R}$ metallicity diagnostic (+/-0.2dex). This agreement implies a relatively chemically-homogeneous multi-phase interstellar medium, and indicates that absorption and emission line probes can be directly compared. However, the relation is less clear when using other diagnostics, such as R23 and R3. We also find possible evidence of an elevated N/O ratio in the host galaxy of GRB090323 at z=3.58, consistent with what has been seen in other $z>4$ galaxies. Ultimate confirmation of an enhanced N/O ratio and of the relation between absorption and emission line metallicities will require a more direct determination of the emission line metallicity via the detection of temperature-sensitive auroral lines in our GRB host galaxy sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 24 pages, 15 figures

Derivationally related words, such as "runner" and "running", exhibit semantic differences which also elicit different visual scenarios. In this paper, we ask whether Vision and Language (V\&L) models capture such distinctions at the morphological level, using a a new methodology and dataset. We compare the results from V\&L models to human judgements and find that models' predictions differ from those of human participants, in particular displaying a grammatical bias. We further investigate whether the human-model misalignment is related to model architecture. Key assets for transparent electric contacts in optoelectronic applications are high conductivity and large transparency over extended spectral range. Indium-Tin-Oxide and Aluminium-doped-Zinc-oxide are commercial examples, with their electrical conductivity resembling those of metals, despite, their transparency being limited up to 1.5µm. This work introduces smooth and compact amorphous thin films of n-type semiconducting WO3-x prepared by RF-sputtering followed by annealing in dry air, as optical layers of tailorable dielectric properties. We evaluate Figure of Merit, combining electrical conductivity and optical transparency, and rate the performances as a transparent conductive layer.

Photo-assisted Ultrafast Scanning Electron Microscopy (USEM) maps the dynamics of surface photovoltages and local electric fields in semiconducting samples. Photovoltages and their gradients close to surface affect the emission yield and the detection efficiency of secondary electrons (SE), leading to photoexcited SE 2D patterns. In this work, we present a method to characterize the evolution of the patterns up to ultrafast regime. These results reveal the role of surface states in affecting the external field dynamics at picoseconds. Moreover, we show that tiny changes in surface preparation express deeply different photoexcited voltage signals. We investigate the relation between the surface chemistry of Si and photo-induced SE contrast.

This work aims at constraining the size, shape, and geometric albedo of the dwarf planet candidate 2002 MS4 through the analysis of nine stellar occultation events. Using multichord detection, we also studied the object's topography by analyzing the obtained limb and the residuals between observed chords and the best-fitted ellipse. We predicted and organized the observational campaigns of nine stellar occultations by 2002 MS4 between 2019 and 2022, resulting in two single-chord events, four double-chord detections, and three events with three to up to sixty-one positive chords. Using 13 selected chords from the 8 August 2020 event, we determined the global elliptical limb of 2002 MS4. The best-fitted ellipse, combined with the object's rotational information from the literature, constrains the object's size, shape, and albedo. Additionally, we developed a new method to characterize topography features on the object's limb. The global limb has a semi-major axis of 412 $\pm$ 10 km, a semi-minor axis of 385 $\pm$ 17 km, and the position angle of the minor axis is 121 $^\circ$ $\pm$ 16$^\circ$. From this instantaneous limb, we obtained 2002 MS4's geometric albedo and the projected area-equivalent diameter. Significant deviations from the fitted ellipse in the northernmost limb are detected from multiple sites highlighting three distinct topographic features: one 11 km depth depression followed by a 25$^{+4}_{-5}$ km height elevation next to a crater-like depression with an extension of 322 $\pm$ 39 km and 45.1 $\pm$ 1.5 km deep. Our results present an object that is $\approx$138 km smaller in diameter than derived from thermal data, possibly indicating the presence of a so-far unknown satellite. However, within the error bars, the geometric albedo in the V-band agrees with the results published in the literature, even with the radiometric-derived albedo.

27. Reconfigurable and Static EM Skins on Vehicles for Localization

Electromagnetic skins (EMSs) have been recently considered as a booster for wireless sensing, but their usage on mobile targets is relatively novel and could be of interest when the target reflectivity can/must be increased to improve its detection or the estimation of parameters. In particular, when illuminated by a wide-bandwidth signal (e.g., from a radar operating at millimeter waves), vehicles behave like \textit{extended targets}, since multiple parts of the vehicle's body effectively contribute to the back-scattering. Moreover, in some cases perspective deformations challenge the correct localization of the vehicle. To address these issues, we propose lodging EMSs on vehicles' roof to act as high-reflectivity planar retro-reflectors toward the sensing terminal. The advantage is twofold: \textit{(i)} by introducing a compact high-reflectivity structure on the target, we make vehicles behave like \textit{point targets}, avoiding perspective deformations and related ranging biases and \textit{(ii)} we increase the reflectivity the vehicle, improving localization performance. We detail the EMS design from the system-level to the full-wave-level considering both reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and cost-effective static passive electromagnetic skins (SP-EMSs). Localization performance of the EMS-aided sensing system is also assessed by Cram\'er-Rao bound analysis in both narrowband and spatially wideband operating conditions.

The mergers of binary compact objects such as neutron stars and black holes are of central interest to several areas of astrophysics, including as the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), sources of high-frequency gravitational waves and likely production sites for heavy element nucleosynthesis via rapid neutron capture (the r-process). These heavy elements include some of great geophysical, biological and cultural importance, such as thorium, iodine and gold. Here we present observations of the exceptionally bright gamma-ray burst GRB 230307A. We show that GRB 230307A belongs to the class of long-duration gamma-ray bursts associated with compact object mergers, and contains a kilonova similar to AT2017gfo, associated with the gravitational-wave merger GW170817. We obtained James Webb Space Telescope mid-infrared (mid-IR) imaging and spectroscopy 29 and 61 days after the burst. The spectroscopy shows an emission line at 2.15 microns which we interpret as tellurium (atomic mass A=130), and a very red source, emitting most of its light in the mid-IR due to the production of lanthanides. These observations demonstrate that nucleosynthesis in GRBs can create r-process elements across a broad atomic mass range and play a central role in heavy element nucleosynthesis across the Universe., Comment: Submitted. We report the discovery of Swift J221951-484240 (hereafter: J221951), a luminous slow-evolving blue transient that was detected by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Ultra-violet/Optical Telescope (Swift/UVOT) during the follow-up of Gravitational Wave alert S190930t, to which it is unrelated. Swift/UVOT photometry shows the UV spectral energy distribution of the transient to be well modelled by a slowly shrinking black body with an approximately constant temperature of T~2.5x10^4 K. At a redshift z=0.5205, J221951 had a peak absolute magnitude of M_u,AB = -23 mag, peak bolometric luminosity L_max=1.1x10^45 erg s^-1 and a total radiated energy of E>2.6x10^52 erg. The archival WISE IR photometry shows a slow rise prior to a peak near the discovery date. Spectroscopic UV observations display broad absorption lines in N V and O VI, pointing toward an outflow at coronal temperatures. The lack of emission in the higher H~Lyman lines, N I and other neutral lines is consistent with a viewing angle close to the plane of the accretion or debris disc. Space-time modulated metasurfaces (STMMs) are a recently proposed generalization of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, which include a proper time-varying phase at the metasurface elements, enabling higher flexibility and control of the reflected signals. The spatial component can be designed to control the direction of reflection, while the temporal one can be adjusted to change the frequency of the reflected signal or to convey information. However, the coupling between the spatial and temporal phases at the STMM can adversely affect its performance. Therefore, this paper analyzes the system parameters that affect the space-time coupling. Furthermore, two methods for space-time decoupling are investigated. Numerical results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed decoupling methods and reveal that the space-time phase coupling increases with the bandwidth of the temporal phase, the size of the STMM, and with grazing angles of incidence onto the STMM., Comment: 6 pages

Networked sensing refers to the capability of properly orchestrating multiple sensing terminals to enhance specific figures of merit, e.g., positioning accuracy or imaging resolution. Regarding radio-based sensing, it is essential to understand \textit{when} and \textit{how} sensing terminals should be orchestrated, namely the best cooperation that trades between performance and cost (e.g., energy consumption, communication overhead, and complexity). This paper addresses networked sensing from a physics-driven perspective, aiming to provide a general theoretical benchmark to evaluate its \textit{imaging} performance bounds and to guide the sensing orchestration accordingly. Diffraction tomography theory (DTT) is the method to quantify the imaging resolution of any radio sensing experiment from inspection of its spectral (or wavenumber) content. In networked sensing, the image formation is based on the back-projection integral, valid for any network topology and physical configuration of the terminals. The \textit{wavefield networked sensing} is a framework in which multiple sensing terminals are orchestrated during the acquisition process to maximize the imaging quality (resolution and grating lobes suppression) by pursuing the deceptively simple \textit{wavenumber tessellation principle}. We discuss all the cooperation possibilities between sensing terminals and possible killer applications. Remarkably, we show that the proposed method allows obtaining high-quality images of the environment in limited bandwidth conditions, leveraging the coherent combination of multiple multi-static low-resolution images., Comment: 13 pages

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been recently considered in sensing context to either improve localization performance or to extend the coverage in non-line-of-sight scenarios. While most of the literature considers RISs as statically placed in the environment, the usage of target-lodged RISs is relatively new and could be of interest where the target's reflectivity can/must be increased to improve its detection or parameters' estimation. This letter derives the Cram\'er-Rao bound (CRB) on the estimation of position and orientation (\textit{pose}) of a target-mounted RIS, in generic conditions: near-field, bistatic and wideband operation (i.e., when the wavefront across the RIS is curved and the employed sensing bandwidth is large enough to obtain a frequency-dependent RIS behavior). In particular, we focus on the wideband effect, that implies a \textit{pose-dependent filtering} on the impinging signal decreasing or increasing the CRB depending on the RIS size and the employed signal bandwidth., Comment: 5 pages

This research report introduces ElegansNet, a neural network that mimics real-world neuronal network circuitry, with the goal of better understanding the interplay between connectome topology and deep learning systems. The proposed approach utilizes the powerful representational capabilities of living beings' neuronal circuitry to design and generate improved deep learning systems with a topology similar to natural networks. The Caenorhabditis elegans connectome is used as a reference due to its completeness, reasonable size, and functional neuron classes annotations. It is demonstrated that the connectome of simple organisms exhibits specific functional relationships between neurons, and once transformed into learnable tensor networks and integrated into modern architectures, it offers bio-plausible structures that efficiently solve complex tasks. The performance of the models is demonstrated against randomly wired networks and compared to artificial networks ranked on global benchmarks. In the first case, ElegansNet outperforms randomly wired networks. Interestingly, ElegansNet models show slightly similar performance with only those based on the Watts-Strogatz small-world property. When compared to state-of-the-art artificial neural networks, such as transformers or attention-based autoencoders, ElegansNet outperforms well-known deep learning and traditional models in both supervised image classification tasks and unsupervised hand-written digits reconstruction, achieving top-1 accuracy of 99.99% on Cifar10 and 99.84% on MNIST Unsup on the validation sets., Comment: 4 pages, short report before full paper submission

Target-to-user (T2U) association is a prerequisite to fully exploit the potential of the sensing function in communication-centric integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems, e.g., for beam and blockage management. This letter proposes to purposely mount a RIS on the roof of the vehicular user equipment (VUE), which can serve as an intentional back-reflector towards the base station. By controlling the reflection pattern over time, it is possible to transmit information to the sensing system, i.e., back-reflection as bit 1, no back-reflection as bit 0. The VUEs are configured to back-reflect a Hadamard code sequence, which enables T2U association. The numerical results confirm the validity of our proposal.

Space-time modulated metasurfaces (STMMs) are a newly investigated technology for next 6G generation wireless communication networks. An STMM augments the spatial phase function with a time-varying one across the elements, allowing for the conveyance of information that possibly modulates the impinging signal. Hence, STMM represents an evolution of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), which only design the spatial phase pattern. STMMs convey signals without a relevant increase in the energy budget, which is convenient for applications where energy is a strong constraint. This paper proposes a mathematical model for STMM-based wireless communication, that creates the basics for two potential STMM architectures. One has excellent design flexibility, whereas the other is more cost-effective. The model describes STMM's distinguishing features, such as space-time coupling, and their impact on system performance. The proposed STMM model addresses the design criteria of a full-duplex system architecture, in which the temporal signal originating at the STMM generates a modulation overlapped with the incident one. The presented numerical results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed model and its potential to revolutionize wireless communication.

We report the discovery of the unusually bright long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB), GRB 221009A, as observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift), Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI), and Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer Mission (NICER). This energetic GRB was located relatively nearby (z = 0.151), allowing for sustained observations of the afterglow. The large X-ray luminosity and low Galactic latitude (b = 4.3 degrees) make GRB 221009A a powerful probe of dust in the Milky Way. Using echo tomography we map the line-of-sight dust distribution and find evidence for significant column densities at large distances (~> 10kpc). We present analysis of the light curves and spectra at X-ray and UV/optical wavelengths, and find that the X-ray afterglow of GRB 221009A is more than an order of magnitude brighter at T0 + 4.5 ks than any previous GRB observed by Swift. In its rest frame GRB 221009A is at the high end of the afterglow luminosity distribution, but not uniquely so. In a simulation of randomly generated bursts, only 1 in 10^4 long GRBs were as energetic as GRB 221009A; such a large E_gamma,iso implies a narrow jet structure, but the afterglow light curve is inconsistent with simple top-hat jet models. Using the sample of Swift GRBs with redshifts, we estimate that GRBs as energetic and nearby as GRB 221009A occur at a rate of ~<1 per 1000 yr - making this a truly remarkable opportunity unlikely to be repeated in our lifetime., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures, submitted to ApJL

Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) systems are recognised as one of the key ingredients of the sixth generation (6G) network. A challenging topic in ISAC is the design of a single waveform combining both communication and sensing functionalities on the same time-frequency-space resources, allowing to tune the performance of both with partial or full hardware sharing. This paper proposes a dual-domain waveform design approach that superposes onto the frequency-time (FT) domain both the legacy orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal and a sensing one, purposely designed in the delay-Doppler domain. With a proper power downscaling of the sensing signal w.r.t. OFDM, it is possible to exceed regulatory bandwidth limitations proper of legacy multicarrier systems to increase the sensing performance while leaving communication substantially unaffected. Numerical and experimental results prove the effectiveness of the dual-domain waveform, notwithstanding a power abatement of at least 30 dB of the signal used for sensing compared to the one used for communication. The dual-domain ISAC waveform outperforms both OFDM and orthogonal time-frequency-space (OTFS) in terms of Cram\'{e}r-Rao bound on delay estimation (up to 20 dB), thanks to its superior resolution, with a negligible penalty on the achievable rate., Comment: 28 pages, single column

Abstract SiGe islands have been proposed for applications in the fields of microelectronics, optoelectronics and thermoelectrics. Although most of the works in literature are based on MBE, one of the possible advantages of low-energy plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (LEPECVD) is a wider range of deposition rates, which in turn results in the possibility of growing islands with a high Ge concentration. We will show that LEPECVD can be effectively used for the controlled growth of ordered arrays of SiGe islands. In order to control the nucleation of the islands, patterned Si (001) substrates were obtained by e-beam lithography (EBL) and dry etching. We realized periodic circular pits with diameters ranging from 80 to 300 nm and depths from 65 to 75 nm. Subsequently, thin films (0.8–3.2 nm) of pure Ge were deposited by LEPECVD, resulting in regular and uniform arrays of Ge-rich islands. LEPECVD allowed the use of a wide range of growth rates (0.01–0.1 nm s−1) and substrates temperatures (600–750°C), so that the Ge content of the islands could be varied. Island morphology was characterized by AFM, while μ-Raman was used to analyze the Ge content inside the islands and the composition differences between islands on patterned and unpatterned areas of the substrate.
