Abstract A two-dimensional (2D) Weyl semimetal, akin to a spinful variant of graphene, represents a topological matter characterized by Weyl fermion-like quasiparticles in low dimensions. The spinful linear band structure in two dimensions gives rise to distinctive topological properties, accompanied by the emergence of Fermi string edge states. We report the experimental realization of a 2D Weyl semimetal, bismuthene monolayer grown on SnS(Se) substrates. Using spin and angle-resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopies, we directly observe spin-polarized Weyl cones, Weyl nodes, and Fermi strings, providing consistent evidence of their inherent topological characteristics. Our work opens the door for the experimental study of Weyl fermions in low-dimensional materials.

Abstract Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common malignant brain tumor in adults, which remains incurable and often recurs rapidly after initial therapy. While large efforts have been dedicated to uncover genomic/transcriptomic alternations associated with the recurrence of GBMs, the evolutionary trajectories of matched pairs of primary and recurrent (P-R) GBMs remain largely elusive. It remains challenging to identify genes associated with time to relapse (TTR) and construct a stable and effective prognostic model for predicting TTR of primary GBM patients. By integrating RNA-sequencing and genomic data from multiple datasets of patient-matched longitudinal GBMs of isocitrate dehydrogenase wild-type (IDH-wt), here we examined the associations of TTR with heterogeneities between paired P-R GBMs in gene expression profiles, tumor mutation burden (TMB), and microenvironment. Our results revealed a positive correlation between TTR and transcriptomic/genomic differences between paired P-R GBMs, higher percentages of non-mesenchymal-to-mesenchymal transition and mesenchymal subtype for patients with a short TTR than for those with a long TTR, a high correlation between paired P-R GBMs in gene expression profiles and TMB, and a negative correlation between the fitting level of such a paired P-R GBM correlation and TTR. According to these observations, we identified 55 TTR-associated genes and thereby constructed a seven-gene (ZSCAN10, SIGLEC14, GHRHR, TBX15, TAS2R1, CDKL1, and CD101) prognostic model for predicting TTR of primary IDH-wt GBM patients using univariate/multivariate Cox regression analyses. The risk scores estimated by the model were significantly negatively correlated with TTR in the training set and two independent testing sets. The model also segregated IDH-wt GBM patients into two groups with significantly divergent progression-free survival outcomes and showed promising performance for predicting 1-, 2-, and 3-year progression-free survival rates in all training and testing sets. Our findings provide new insights into the molecular understanding of GBM progression at recurrence and potential targets for therapeutic treatments.

In graphene and on the surfaces of many topological insulators, the Dirac cones are pinned to high symmetry points in reciprocal space. Here, the authors report that the Dirac cones in atomically-thin Sb layers occur at generic reciprocal-space points which can be tuned by lattice strain.

Abstract Background Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of non-coding RNAs formed by pre-mRNA back-splicing, which are widely expressed in animal/plant cells and often play an important role in regulating microRNA (miRNA) activities. While numerous databases have collected a large amount of predicted circRNA candidates and provided the corresponding circRNA-regulated interactions, a stand-alone package for constructing circRNA-miRNA-mRNA interactions based on user-identified circRNAs across species is lacking. Results We present CircMiMi (circRNA-miRNA-mRNA interactions), a modular, Python-based software to identify circRNA-miRNA-mRNA interactions across 18 species (including 16 animals and 2 plants) with the given coordinates of circRNA junctions. The CircMiMi-constructed circRNA-miRNA-mRNA interactions are derived from circRNA-miRNA and miRNA-mRNA axes with the support of computational predictions and/or experimental data. CircMiMi also allows users to examine alignment ambiguity of back-splice junctions for checking circRNA reliability and examine reverse complementary sequences residing in the sequences flanking the circularized exons for investigating circRNA formation. We further employ CircMiMi to identify circRNA-miRNA-mRNA interactions based on the circRNAs collected in NeuroCirc, a large-scale database of circRNAs in the human brain. We construct circRNA-miRNA-mRNA interactions comprising differentially expressed circRNAs, and miRNAs in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and cross-species analyze the relevance of the targets to ASD. We thus provide a rich set of ASD-associated circRNA-miRNA-mRNA axes and a useful starting point for investigation of regulatory mechanisms in ASD pathophysiology. Conclusions CircMiMi allows users to identify circRNA-mediated interactions in multiple species, shedding light on regulatory roles of circRNAs. Since the invention of the microphone by Barina in 1876, there have been numerous applications of audio processing, such as phonographs, broadcasting stations, and public address systems, which merely capture and amplify sound and play it back. Nowadays, audio processing involves analysis and noise-filtering techniques. There are various methods for noise filtering, each employing unique algorithms, but they all require two or more microphones for signal processing and analysis. For instance, on mobile phones, two microphones located in different positions are utilized for active noise cancellation (one for primary audio capture and the other for capturing ambient noise). However, a drawback is that when the sound source is distant, it may lead to poor audio capture. To capture sound from distant sources, alternative methods, like blind signal separation and beamforming, are necessary. This paper proposes employing a beamforming algorithm with two microphones to enhance speech and implementing this algorithm on an embedded system. However, prior to beamforming, it is imperative to accurately detect the direction of the sound source to process and analyze the audio from that direction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main purpose of this study is to build from practice to theory by developing a flow chart of menu planning based on the practices of a single successful executive chef and then testing the generality of the flow chart by assessing agreement with flows by 10 other executive chefs working in similar environments. This paper involves deep observation of real-life practices of one 5-star executive chef and his associates using. Observation is based on the 5W2H1E approach. A flowchart of the menu planning process is developed based on data from observing. The research uses degrees-of-freedom analysis of responses from ten chefs in assessing acceptance of the flowchart structure. It is concluded that the flow chart is meaningful in that it is generally acceptable. Ideas from the research contribute to theory and have practical implications. Contributions and practical implications are discussed.

Vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is one of the most promising technologies for grid-scale energy storage applications because of its numerous attractive features. In this study, metal-organic frameworks (MOF)-derived catalysts (MDC) are fabricated using carbonization techniques at different sintering temperatures. Zirconium-based MOF-derived catalyst annealed at 900 °C exhibits the best electrochemical activity toward VO2+/VO2+ redox couple among all samples. Furthermore, the charge-discharge test confirms that the energy efficiency (EE) of the VRFB assembled with MOF-derived catalyst modified graphite felt (MDC-GF-900) is 3.9% more efficient than the VRFB using the pristine graphite felt at 100 mA cm−2. Moreover, MDC-GF-900 reveals 31% and 107% higher capacity than the pristine GF at 80 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively. The excellent performance of MDC-GF-900 results from the existence of oxygen-containing groups active sites, graphite structure with high conductivity embedded with zirconium oxide, and high specific surface area, which are critical points for promoting the vanadium redox reactions. Because of these advantages, MDC-GF-900 also possesses superior stability performance, which shows no decline of EE even after 100 cycles at 100 mA cm−2.

In this study, the vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), functionalized carbon nanotubes (f-CNT), and polypyrrole (PPy) based composites films have been prepared through a facile synthesis method and their electrochemical performance were evaluated as freestanding negative electrodes of supercapacitor. A hydrous V2O5 gel prepared by treating V2O5 powder with H2O2 was mixed with f-CNT to obtain V2O5/f-CNT composite film. V2O5/f-CNT composite was then coated with PPy through vapor phase polymerization method. The PPy deposited on the V2O5/f-CNT prevented the dissolution of V2O5 and thus resulted in an improved the capacitance and cycle life stability for V2O5/f-CNT/PPy composite electrode. V2O5/f-CNT/PPy freestanding negative electrode exhibited a high areal capacitance value (1266 mF cm−2 at a current density of 1 mA cm−2) and good cycling stability (83.0% capacitance retention after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles). The superior performance of the V2O5/f-CNT/PPy composite electrode can be attributed to the synergy between f-CNT with high conductivity and V2O5 and PPy with high-energy densities. Thus, V2O5/f-CNT/PPy composite based electrode can effectively mitigate the drawbacks of the low specific capacitance of CNTs and the poor cycling life of V2O5.

The intrinsic hydrophobicity of graphite felt (GF) is typically altered for the purpose of the surface wettability and providing active sites for the enhancement of electrochemical performance. In this work, commercial GF is used as the electrodes. The GF electrode with a coated-polydopamine catalyst is achieved to enhance the electrocatalytic activity of GF for the redox reaction of vanadium ions in vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Materials characteristics proved that a facile coating via atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) to alter the surface superhydrophilicity and to deposit polydopamine on GF for providing the more active sites is feasibly achieved. Due to the synergistic effects of the presence of more active sites on the superhydrophilic surface of modified electrodes, the electrochemical performance toward VO2+/VO2+ reaction was evidently improved. We believed that using the APPJ technique as a coating method for electrocatalyst preparation offers the oxygen-containing functional groups on the substrate surface on giving a hydrogen bonding with the grafted functional polymeric materials.

Nodal line semimetals have been observed in three-dimensional materials but are missing in two-dimensional counterparts. Here, Feng et al. report two-dimensional Dirac nodal line fermions protected by mirror reflection symmetry in monolayer Cu2Si.

To achieve reinforcement of mechanical and thermal performances of polypropylene (PP) product, this work aimed at fabrication of surface modified kaolin (M-kaolin) filled polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride (PP-g-MAH) composites with varying contents of fillers and investigation of their mechanical and thermal properties. And the prepared PP-g-MAH/M-kaolin composites were characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Fracture analysis by SEM showed M-kaolin particles were well dispersed in the PP-g-MAH matrix. Mechanical behaviors were determined by tensile strength, tensile strain at break and impact strength analysis. Impact strength of PP-g-MAH/2 wt% M-kaolin composites was improved up to 30% comparing with unfilled composites. Thermostability had been found enhanced when M-kaolin added. The results revealed PP-g-MAH/M-kaolin composites showed the optimal thermal and mechanical properties when 2 wt% of M-kaolin was added. Keywords: PP-g-MAH, Kaolin, Modification, Thermal stability

This research deals with the dynamic and continuous berth allocation problem (DCBAP) in which both arrived and incoming ships are considered and a quay is used as a continuous line to accommodate as many ships as possible at one time. The DCBAP is solved by a two-stage procedure. In the first stage a heuristic/metaheuristic is used to generate alternative ship placement sequences while in the second stage a specific heuristic is employed to place ships and resolve overlaps of ships for the development of a feasible solution. Different methods, including FCFS (First Come First Served), SFLA (Shuffled Frog-Leaping Algorithm), and ISFLA (Improved Shuffled Frog-Leaping Algorithm), were employed in the first stage for comparison. The experimental results show that the ISFLA outperforms the others in terms of solution quality, implying that the ISFLA has the potential to deal with the DCBAP in a container terminal.

Bismuth has been the key element in the discovery and development of topological insulator materials. Previous theoretical studies indicated that Bi is topologically trivial and it can transform into the topological phase by alloying with Sb. However, recent high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements strongly suggested a topological band structure in pure Bi, conflicting with the theoretical results. To address this issue, we studied the band structure of Bi and Sb films by ARPES and first-principles calculations. The quantum confinement effectively enlarges the energy gap in the band structure of Bi films and enables a direct visualization of the Z 2 topological invariant of Bi. We find that Bi quantum films in topologically trivial and nontrivial phases respond differently to surface perturbations. This way, we establish experimental criteria for detecting the band topology of Bi by spectroscopic methods.

The transformations of the topological phase and the edge modes of a double-bilayer bismuthene were investigated with first-principles calculations and Green’s function as the inter-bilayer spacing increased from 0 Å to 10 Å. At a critical spacing of 2 Å, a topological phase transition from a topological insulator to a band insulator resulting from a band inversion between the highest valence band and the second lowest conduction band, was observed, and this was understood based on the particular orbital characters of the band inversion involved states. The edge modes of double-bilayer bismuthene survived the phase transition. When d was 2 Å < d < 4 Å, the interaction between the edge modes of two separated bismuthene bilayers induced an anti-crossing gap and resulted in a trivial band connection. At and beyond 4 Å, the two bilayers behavior decoupled entirely. The results demonstrate the transformability of the topological phase and the edge modes with the inter-bilayer spacing in double-bilayer bismuthene, which may be useful for spintronic applications.
