Search

Measurements of circular polarization of $\gamma$-ray emitted from neutron capture reactions provide valuable information for nuclear physics studies. The spin and parity of excited states can be determined by measuring the circular polarization from polarized neutron capture reactions. Furthermore, the $\gamma$-ray circular polarization in a neutron capture resonance is crucial for studying the enhancement effect of parity nonconservation in compound nuclei. The $\gamma$-ray circular polarization can be measured using a polarimeter based on magnetic Compton scattering. A polarimeter was constructed, and its performance indicators were evaluated using a circularly polarized $\gamma$-ray beam. The enhancement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the vicinity of $p$-wave compound nuclear resonances was observed for a variety of medium-heavy nuclei. The enhanced parity-violating asymmetry can be understood using the $s$-$p$ mixing model. The $s$-$p$ mixing model predicts several neutron energy-dependent angular correlations between the neutron momentum $\vec k_n$, neutron spin $\vec\sigma_n$, $\gamma$-ray momentum $\vec k_\gamma$, and $\gamma$-ray polarization $\vec\sigma_\gamma$ in the $(n,\gamma)$ reaction. In this paper, the improved value of the transverse asymmetry of $\gamma$-ray emissions, corresponding to a correlation term $\vec{\sigma}_n\cdot(\vec k_n\times\vec k_\gamma)$ in the $^{139}\mathrm{La}(\vec n,\gamma)^{140}\mathrm{La}$ reaction, and the transverse asymmetries in the transitions to several low excited states of $^{140}\mathrm{La}$ are reported., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Neutron transmission experiments can offer a new type of highly sensitive search for time-reversal invariance violating (TRIV) effects in nucleon-nucleon interactions via the same enhancement mechanism observed for large parity violating (PV) effects in neutron-induced compound nuclear processes. In these compound processes, the TRIV cross-section is given as the product of the PV cross-section, a spin-factor $\kappa$, and a ratio of TRIV and PV matrix elements. We determined $\kappa$ to be $0.59\pm0.05$ for $^{139}$La+$n$ using both $(n, \gamma)$ spectroscopy and ($\vec{n}+^{139}\vec{\rm La}$) transmission. This result quantifies for the first time the high sensitivity of the $^{139}$La 0.75~eV $p$-wave resonance in a future search for P-odd/T-odd interactions in ($\vec{n}+^{139}\vec{\rm La}$) forward transmission.

We measured the spin dependence in a neutron-induced $p$-wave resonance by using a polarized epithermal neutron beam and a polarized nuclear target. Our study focuses on the 0.75~eV $p$-wave resonance state of $^{139}$La+$n$, where largely enhanced parity violation has been observed. We determined the partial neutron width of the $p$-wave resonance by measuring the spin dependence of the neutron absorption cross section between polarized $^{139}\rm{La}$ and polarized neutrons. Our findings serve as a foundation for the quantitative study of the enhancement effect of the discrete symmetry violations caused by mixing between partial amplitudes in the compound nuclei.

A neutron-energy dependent angular distribution was measured for individual $\gamma$-rays from the 3.2 eV $p$-wave resonance of $^{131}$Xe+$n$, that shows enhanced parity violation owing to a mixing between $s$- and $p$-wave amplitudes. The $\gamma$-ray transitions from the $p$-wave resonance were identified, and the angular distribution with respect to the neutron momentum was evaluated as a function of the neutron energy for 7132 keV $\gamma$-rays, which correspond to a transition to the 1807 keV excited state of $^{132}$Xe. The angular distribution is considered to originate from the interference between $s$- and $p$-wave amplitudes, and will provide a basis for a quantitative understanding of the enhancement mechanism of the fundamental parity violation in compound nuclei.

Largely enhanced parity-violating effects observed in compound resonances induced by epithermal neutrons are currently attributed to the mixing of parity-unfavored partial amplitudes in the entrance channel of the compound states. Furthermore, it is proposed that the same mechanism that enhances the parity-violation also enhances the breaking of time-reversal-invariance in the compound nucleus. The entrance-channel mixing induces energy-dependent spin-angular correlations of individual $\gamma$-rays emitted from the compound nuclear state. For a detailed study of the mixing model, a $\gamma$-ray yield in the reaction of $^{117}$Sn(n,$\gamma$)$^{118}$Sn was measured using the pulsed beam of polarized epithermal neutrons and Ge detectors. Finite element method (FEM) modeling of the volumetric expansion phenomenon associated with the accumulation of irradiation was performed on rocks in a concrete for nuclear power plant. The FEM mesh of sandstone, tuff, and granite was created based on microscopic images, and the volumetric expansion due to irradiation was calculated. The saturated value of the volume expansion due to irradiation accumulation was calculated, and it was shown that the saturated value of the volume expansion was well explained by the experimental value. In addition, the FEM analysis indicates that irradiation-induced degradation of rock propagates through a localized concentration of stress followed by fracture with cracks spreading throughout the rock., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The neutron energy-dependent angular distribution of $\gamma$ rays from $^{117}{\rm Sn}(n,\gamma)$ reaction was measured with germanium detectors and a pulsed neutron beam. The angular distribution was clearly observed in $\gamma$-ray emissions with an energy of 9327 keV which corresponds to the transition from a neutron resonance of $^{117}{\rm Sn}+n$ to the ground state of $^{118}{\rm Sn}$. The angular distribution causes an angular-dependent asymmetric resonance shape. An asymmetry $A_{\rm LH}$ was defined as $(N_{\rm L}-N_{\rm H})/(N_{\rm L}+N_{\rm H})$, where $N_{\rm L}$ and $N_{\rm H}$ are integrated values for lower- and higher-energy regions of a neutron resonance, respectively. We found that the $A_{\rm LH}$ has the angular dependence of $(A \cos \theta_\gamma +B)$, where $\theta_\gamma$ is the $\gamma$-ray emission angle with respect to the incident neutron momentum, with $A=0.394 \pm 0.073$ and $B = 0.118 \pm 0.029$ in the 1.33 eV p-wave resonance., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The magnetism of Al$_x$Fe$_{2-x}$GeO$_5$ from $x$ = 0.09 to $x$ = 0.91 with andalusite structure was examined. The magnetic properties of Al$_x$Fe$_{2-x}$GeO$_5$ at low temperatures were found to be weak ferromagnetic-like state for $x$ $<$ 0.3 and spin-glass state for $x$ $>$ 0.3. The small spontaneous magnetization that appears in the weak ferromagnetic-like phase would be due to the presence of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction or to the difference in the magnitude of the magnetic moment of Fe$^{3+}$ in the octahedral and trigonal bipyramidal sites. The appearance of the spin-glass phase indicates that the dilution of Fe ions by Al ions in Al$_x$Fe$_{2-x}$GeO$_5$ causes the competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. The $x$ dependence of the site occupancy of Fe ions suggests that Fe$_2$GeO$_5$ with andalusite structure cannot be synthesized., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figure

Neutron energy-dependent angular distributions were observed for individual $\gamma$-rays from the 0.74 eV p-wave resonance of $^{139}$La+$n$ to several lower excited states of $^{140}$La. The $\gamma$-ray signals were analyzed in a two dimensional histogram of the $\gamma$-ray energy, measured with distributed germanium detectors, and neutron energy, determined with the time-of-flight of pulsed neutrons, to identify the neutron energy dependence of the angular distribution for each individual $\gamma$-rays. The angular distribution was also found for a photopeak accompanied with a faint p-wave resonance component in the neutron energy spectrum. A neutron lifetime measurement conducted at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) is counting the number of electrons from neutron decays with a time projection chamber (TPC). The $\gamma$ rays produced in the TPC cause irreducible background events. To achieve the precise measurement, the inner walls of the TPC consist of $^6$Li-enriched lithium-fluoride ($^6$LiF) tiles to suppress the amount of $\gamma$ rays. In order to estimate the amount of $\gamma$ rays from the $^{6}{\rm LiF}$ tile, prompt gamma ray analysis (PGA) measurements were performed using germanium detectors. We reconstructed the measured $\gamma$-ray energy spectrum using a Monte Carlo simulation with the stripping method. Comparing the measured spectrum with a simulated one, the number of $\gamma$ rays emitted from the$^{6}{\rm LiF}$ tile was $(2.3^{+0.7}_{-0.3}) \times 10^{-4}$ per incident neutron. This is $1.4^{+0.5}_{-0.2}$ times the value assumed for a mole fraction of the $^{6}{\rm LiF}$ tile. We concluded that the amount of $\gamma$ rays produced from the $^{6}{\rm LiF}$ tile is not more twice the originally assumed value., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, will be submitted to JINST

Quantum communication networks require on-chip transfer and manipulation of single particles as well as their interconversion to single photons for long-range information exchange. Flying excitons propelled by GHz surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are outstanding messengers to fulfill these requirements. Here, we demonstrate the acoustic manipulation of single exciton centers consisting of individual excitons bound to shallow impurities centers embedded in a semiconductor quantum well. Time-resolved photoluminescence studies show that the emission intensity and energy from these centers oscillate at the SAW frequency of 3.5 GHz. Furthermore, these centers can be remotely pumped via acoustic transport of flying excitons along a quantum well channel over several microns. Time correlation studies reveal that the centers emit anti-bunched light, thus acting as single-photon sources operating at GHz frequencies. Our results pave the way for the exciton-based on-demand manipulation and on-chip transfer of single excitons at microwave frequencies with a natural photonic interface., Comment: Main text: 20 pages, 5 figures. We develop a coherent beam splitter for single electrons driven through two tunnel-coupled quantum wires by surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The output current through each wire oscillates with gate voltages to tune the tunnel-coupling and potential difference between the wires. This oscillation is assigned to coherent electron tunneling motion that can be used to encode a flying qubit and is well reproduced by numerical calculations of time evolution of the SAW-driven single electrons. The oscillation visibility is currently limited to about 3%, but robust against decoherence, indicating that the SAW-electron can serve as a novel platform for a solid-state flying qubit., Comment: 5+3 pages, 4+2 figures

A correlation term ${{ \sigma}_{n} }\cdot ({ k_{n}\times k_\gamma}) $ in the ${}^{139}{\rm La}(\vec{n},\gamma)$ reaction has been studied utilizing epithermal polarized neutrons and germanium detectors. The transverse asymmetry for single $\gamma$-ray transition was measured to be $0.60\pm0.19$ in the $p$-wave resonance.

Inflation is the leading theory of the first instant of the universe. Inflation, which postulates that the universe underwent a period of rapid expansion an instant after its birth, provides convincing explanation for cosmological observations. Recent advancements in detector technology have opened opportunities to explore primordial gravitational waves generated by the inflation through B-mode (divergent-free) polarization pattern embedded in the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies. If detected, these signals would provide strong evidence for inflation, point to the correct model for inflation, and open a window to physics at ultra-high energies. LiteBIRD is a satellite mission with a goal of detecting degree-and-larger-angular-scale B-mode polarization. LiteBIRD will observe at the second Lagrange point with a 400 mm diameter telescope and 2,622 detectors. It will survey the entire sky with 15 frequency bands from 40 to 400 GHz to measure and subtract foregrounds. The U.S. LiteBIRD team is proposing to deliver sub-Kelvin instruments that include detectors and readout electronics. A lenslet-coupled sinuous antenna array will cover low-frequency bands (40 GHz to 235 GHz) with four frequency arrangements of trichroic pixels. An orthomode-transducer-coupled corrugated horn array will cover high-frequency bands (280 GHz to 402 GHz) with three types of single frequency detectors. The detectors will be made with Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometers cooled to a 100 milli-Kelvin base temperature by an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator.The TES bolometers will be read out using digital frequency multiplexing with Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) amplifiers. Up to 78 bolometers will be multiplexed with a single SQUID amplidier. We present the molecular cloud properties of N55 in the Large Magellanic Cloud using $^{12}$CO(1-0) and $^{13}$CO(1-0) observations obtained with Atacama Large Millimeter Array. We have done a detailed study of molecular gas properties, to understand how the cloud properties of N55 differ from Galactic clouds. Most CO emission appears clumpy in N55, and molecular cores that have YSOs show larger linewidths and masses. The massive clumps are associated with high and intermediate mass YSOs. The clump masses are determined by local thermodynamic equilibrium and virial analysis of the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO emissions. These mass estimates lead to the conclusion that, (a) the clumps are in self-gravitational virial equilibrium, and (b) the $^{12}$CO(1-0)-to-H$_2$ conversion factor, X$_{\rm CO}$, is 6.5$\times$10$^{20}$cm$^{-2}$(K km s$^{-1}$)$^{-1}$. This CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor for N55 clumps is measured at a spatial scale of $\sim$0.67 pc, which is about two times higher than the X$_{\rm CO}$ value of Orion cloud at a similar spatial scale. The core mass function of N55 clearly show a turnover below 200M$_{\odot}$, separating the low-mass end from the high-mass end. The low-mass end of the $^{12}$CO mass spectrum is fitted with a power law of index 0.5$\pm$0.1, while for $^{13}$CO it is fitted with a power law index 0.6$\pm$0.2. In the high-mass end, the core mass spectrum is fitted with a power index of 2.0$\pm$0.3 for $^{12}$CO, and with 2.5$\pm$0.4 for $^{13}$CO. This power-law behavior of the core mass function in N55 is consistent with many Galactic clouds., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Major construction and initial-phase operation of a second-generation gravitational-wave detector KAGRA has been completed. The entire 3-km detector is installed underground in a mine in order to be isolated from background seismic vibrations on the surface. This allows us to achieve a good sensitivity at low frequencies and high stability of the detector. Bare-bones equipment for the interferometer operation has been installed and the first test run was accomplished in March and April of 2016 with a rather simple configuration. The initial configuration of KAGRA is named {\it iKAGRA}. Angular distribution of individual $\gamma$-rays, emitted from a neutron-induced compound nuclear state via radiative capture reaction of ${}^{139}$La(n,$\gamma$) has been studied as a function of incident neutron energy in the epithermal region by using germanium detectors. An asymmetry $A_{\mathrm{LH}}$ was defined as $(N_{\mathrm L}-N_{\mathrm H})/(N_{\mathrm L}+N_{\mathrm H})$, where $N_{\mathrm L}$ and $N_{\mathrm H}$ are integrals of low and high energy region of a neutron resonance respectively, and we found that $A_{\mathrm{LH}}$ has the angular dependence of $(A\cos\theta_\gamma+B)$, where $\theta_\gamma$ is emitted angle of $\gamma$-rays, with $A= -0.3881\pm0.0236$ and $B=-0.0747\pm0.0105$ in 0.74 eV p-wave resonance. This angular distribution was analyzed within the framework of interference between s- and p-wave amplitudes in the entrance channel to the compound nuclear state, and it is interpreted as the value of the partial p-wave neutron width corresponding to the total angular momentum of the incident neutron combined with the weak matrix element, in the context of the mechanism of enhanced parity-violating effects. Additionally we used the result to quantify the possible enhancement of the breaking of the time-reversal invariance in the vicinity of the p-wave resonance., Comment: 14pages, 25 figures

The electron wave function experiences a phase modification at coherent transmission through a quantum dot. This transmission phase undergoes a characteristic shift of $\pi$ when scanning through a Coulomb-blockade resonance. Between successive resonances either a transmission phase lapse of $\pi$ or a phase plateau is theoretically expected to occur depending on the parity of the corresponding quantum dot states. Despite considerable experimental effort, this transmission phase behaviour has remained elusive for a large quantum dot. Here we report on transmission phase measurements across such a large quantum dot hosting hundreds of electrons. Using an original electron two-path interferometer to scan the transmission phase along fourteen successive resonances, we observe both phase lapses and plateaus. Additionally, we demonstrate that quantum dot deformation alters the sequence of transmission phase lapses and plateaus via parity modifications of the involved quantum dot states. The transmission phase across a quantum dot (QD) is expected to show mesoscopic behavior, where the appearance of a phase lapse between Coulomb peaks (CPs) as a function of the gate voltage depends on the orbital parity relation between the corresponding CPs. On the other hand, such mesoscopic behavior has been observed only in a limited QD configuration (a few-electron and single-level transport regime) and universal phase lapses by $\pi$ between consecutive CPs have been reported for all the other configurations. Here, we report on the measurement of a transmission phase across a QD around the crossover between single-level and multilevel transport regimes employing an original two-path quantum interferometer. We find mesoscopic behavior for the studied QD. Our results show that the universal phase lapse, a longstanding puzzle of the phase shift, is absent for a standard QD, where several tens of successive well-separated CPs are observed., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We study the transmission phase shift across a Kondo correlated quantum dot in a GaAs heterostructure at temperatures below the Kondo temperature ($T < T_{\rm K}$), where the phase shift is expected to show a plateau at $\pi/2$ for an ideal Kondo singlet ground state. Our device is tuned such that the ratio $\Gamma/U$ of level width $\Gamma$ to charging energy $U$ is quite large ($\lesssim 0.5$ rather than $\ll 1$). This situation is commonly used in GaAs quantum dots to ensure Kondo temperatures large enough ($\simeq 100$ mK here) to be experimentally accessible; however it also implies that charge fluctuations are more pronounced than typically assumed in theoretical studies focusing on the regime $\Gamma/U \ll 1$ needed to ensure a well-defined local moment. Our measured phase evolves monotonically by $\pi$ across the two Coulomb peaks, but without being locked at $\pi/2$ in the Kondo valley for $T \ll T_{\rm K}$, due to a significant influence of large $\Gamma/U$. Only when $\Gamma/U$ is reduced sufficiently does the phase start to be locked around $\pi/2$ and develops into a plateau at $\pi/2$. Our observations are consistent with numerical renormalization group calculations, and can be understood as a direct consequence of the Friedel sum rule that relates the transmission phase shift to the local occupancy of the dot, and thermal average of a transmission coefficient through a resonance level near the Fermi energy., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

POLARBEAR-2 (PB-2) is a cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiment that will be located in the Atacama highland in Chile at an altitude of 5200 m. Its science goals are to measure the CMB polarization signals originating from both primordial gravitational waves and weak lensing. PB-2 is designed to measure the tensor to scalar ratio, r, with precision {\sigma}(r) < 0.01, and the sum of neutrino masses, {\Sigma}m{\nu}, with {\sigma}({\Sigma}m{\nu}) < 90 meV. To achieve these goals, PB-2 will employ 7588 transition-edge sensor bolometers at 95 GHz and 150 GHz, which will be operated at the base temperature of 250 mK. The spatial development of hadronic showers in the CALICE scintillator-steel analogue hadron calorimeter is studied using test beam data collected at CERN and FNAL for single positive pions and protons with initial momenta in the range from 10 to 80 GeV/c. Both longitudinal and radial development of hadron showers are parametrised with two-component functions. The parametrisation is fit to test beam data and simulations using the QGSP_BERT and FTFP_BERT physics lists from Geant4 version 9.6. The parameters extracted from data and simulated samples are compared for the two types of hadrons. We present an overview of the design and status of the \Pb-2 and the Simons Array experiments. \Pb-2 is a Cosmic Microwave Background polarimetry experiment which aims to characterize the arc-minute angular scale B-mode signal from weak gravitational lensing and search for the degree angular scale B-mode signal from inflationary gravitational waves. The receiver has a 365~mm diameter focal plane cooled to 270~milli-Kelvin. The focal plane is filled with 7,588 dichroic lenslet-antenna coupled polarization sensitive Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometric pixels that are sensitive to 95~GHz and 150~GHz bands simultaneously. The TES bolometers are read-out by SQUIDs with 40 channel frequency domain multiplexing. Refractive optical elements are made with high purity alumina to achieve high optical throughput. The receiver is designed to achieve noise equivalent temperature of 5.8~$\mu$K$_{CMB}\sqrt{s}$ in each frequency band. \Pb-2 will deploy in 2016 in the Atacama desert in Chile. The Simons Array is a project to further increase sensitivity by deploying three \Pb-2 type receivers. The Simons Array will cover 95~GHz, 150~GHz and 220~GHz frequency bands for foreground control. We present a study of showers initiated by electrons, pions, kaons, and protons with momenta from 15 GeV to 150 GeV in the highly granular CALICE scintillator-tungsten analogue hadronic calorimeter. The data were recorded at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron in 2011. The analysis includes measurements of the calorimeter response to each particle type as well as measurements of the energy resolution and studies of the longitudinal and radial shower development for selected particles. The results are compared to Geant4 simulations (version 9.6.p02). Transporting ensembles of electrons over long distances without losing their spin polarization is an important benchmark for spintronic devices. It requires usually to inject and to probe spin polarized electrons in conduction channels using ferromagnetic contacts or optical excitation. Parallel to this development, an important effort has been dedicated to the control of nanocircuits at the single electron level. The detection and the coherent manipulation of the spin of a single electron trapped in a quantum dot are now well established. Combined with the recent control of the displacement of individual electrons between two distant quantum dots, these achievements permit to envision the realization of spintronic protocols at the single electron level. Here, we demonstrate that spin information carried by one or two electrons can be transferred between two quantum dots separated by a distance of 4 micrometers with a classical fidelity of 65 %. We show that it is presently limited by spin flips occurring during the transfer procedure prior to and after the electron displacement. Being able to encode and control information in the spin degree of freedom of a single electron while being transferred over distances of a few microns on nanosecond timescales paves the way towards "quantum spintronics" devices where large scale spin-based quantum information processing could be implemented., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, supplementary material section

A quantum two-path interferometer allows for direct measurement of the transmission phase shift of an electron, providing useful information on coherent scattering problems. In mesoscopic systems, however, the two-path interference is easily smeared by contributions from other paths, and this makes it difficult to observe the \textit{true} transmission phase shift. To eliminate this problem, multi-terminal Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometers have been used to derive the phase shift by assuming that the relative phase shift of the electrons between the two paths is simply obtained when a smooth shift of the AB oscillations is observed. Nevertheless the phase shifts using such a criterion have sometimes been inconsistent with theory. On the other hand, we have used an AB ring contacted to tunnel-coupled wires and acquired the phase shift consistent with theory when the two output currents through the coupled wires oscillate with well-defined anti-phase. Here, we investigate thoroughly these two criteria used to ensure a reliable phase measurement, the anti-phase relation of the two output currents and the smooth phase shift in the AB oscillation. We confirm that the well-defined anti-phase relation ensures a correct phase measurement with a quantum two-path interference. In contrast we find that even in a situation where the anti-phase relation is less well-defined, the smooth phase shift in the AB oscillation can still occur but does not give the correct transmission phase due to contributions from multiple paths. This indicates that the phase relation of the two output currents in our interferometer gives a good criterion for the measurement of the \textit{true} transmission phase while the smooth phase shift in the AB oscillation itself does not., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

POLARBEAR-2 is a next-generation receiver for precision measurements of the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB)). Scheduled to deploy in early 2015, it will observe alongside the existing POLARBEAR-1 receiver, on a new telescope in the Simons Array on Cerro Toco in the Atacama desert of Chile. For increased sensitivity, it will feature a larger area focal plane, with a total of 7,588 polarization sensitive antenna-coupled Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometers, with a design sensitivity of 4.1 uKrt(s). The focal plane will be cooled to 250 milliKelvin, and the bolometers will be read-out with 40x frequency domain multiplexing, with 36 optical bolometers on a single SQUID amplifier, along with 2 dark bolometers and 2 calibration resistors. To increase the multiplexing factor from 8x for POLARBEAR-1 to 40x for POLARBEAR-2 requires additional bandwidth for SQUID readout and well-defined frequency channel spacing. Extending to these higher frequencies requires new components and design for the LC filters which define channel spacing. The LC filters are cold resonant circuits with an inductor and capacitor in series with each bolometer, and stray inductance in the wiring and equivalent series resistance from the capacitors can affect bolometer operation. We present results from characterizing these new readout components. Integration of the readout system is being done first on a small scale, to ensure that the readout system does not affect bolometer sensitivity or stability, and to validate the overall system before expansion into the full receiver. Recent experiments [M. Yamamoto et al., Nature Nanotechnology 7, 247 (2012)] used the transport of electrons through an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer and two coupled channels (at both ends of the interferometer) to demonstrate a manipulable flying qubit. Results included in-phase and anti-phase Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations of the two outgoing currents as a function of the magnetic flux, for strong and weak inter-channel coupling, respectively. Here we present new experimental results for a three terminal interferometer, with a tunnel coupling between the two outgoing wires. We show that in some limits, this system is an even simpler realization of the "two-slit" experiment. We also present a simple tight- binding theoretical model which imitates the experimental setup. For weak inter-channel coupling, the AB oscillations in the current which is reflected from the device are very small, and therefore the oscillations in the two outgoing currents must cancel each other, yielding the anti-phase behavior, independent of the length of the coupling regime. For strong inter-channel coupling, whose range depends on the asymmetry between the channels, and for a relatively long coupling distance, all except two of the waves in the coupled channels become evanescent. For the remaining running waves one has a very weak dependence of the ratio between the currents in the two channels on the magnetic flux, implying that these currents are in phase with each other., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

We report on the direct observation of the transmission phase shift through a Kondo correlated quantum dot by employing a new type of two-path interferometer. We observed a clear $\pi/2$-phase shift, which persists up to the Kondo temperature $T_{\rm K}$. Above this temperature, the phase shifts by more than $\pi/2$ at each Coulomb peak, approaching the behavior observed for the standard Coulomb blockade regime. These observations are in remarkable agreement with 2-level numerical renormalization group calculations. The unique combination of experimental and theoretical results presented here fully elucidates the phase evolution in the Kondo regime., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

LiteBIRD is a next-generation satellite mission to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. On large angular scales the B-mode polarization of the CMB carries the imprint of primordial gravitational waves, and its precise measurement would provide a powerful probe of the epoch of inflation. The goal of LiteBIRD is to achieve a measurement of the characterizing tensor to scalar ratio $r$ to an uncertainty of $\delta r=0.001$. In order to achieve this goal we will employ a kilo-pixel superconducting detector array on a cryogenically cooled sub-Kelvin focal plane with an optical system at a temperature of 4~K. We are currently considering two detector array options; transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers and microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKID). In this paper we give an overview of LiteBIRD and describe a TES-based polarimeter designed to achieve the target sensitivity of 2~$\mu$K$\cdot$arcmin over the frequency range 50 to 320~GHz., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures
