Abstract

A direction-sensitive dark matter search experiment at Kamioka underground laboratory with the NEWAGE-0.3a detector was performed. The NEWAGE- 0.3a detector is a gaseous micro-time-projection chamber filled with CF4 gas at 152 Torr. The fiducial volume and target mass are 20*25*31 cm3 and 0.0115 kg, respectively. With an exposure of 0.524 kgdays, improved spin-dependent weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-proton cross section limits by a direction-sensitive method were achieved including a new record of 5400 pb for 150 GeV/c2 WIMPs. We studied the remaining background and found that ambient gamma-rays contributed about one-fifth of the remaining background and radioactive contaminants inside the gas chamber contributed the rest., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Physics Letters B

Abstract

Abstract Background Open reading frame 58 (ORF58) of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) lies at the 3'end of the Unique long (UL) region and its functional is unknown. In order to clarify whether ORF58 is essential for the growth of VZV, we constructed a deletion mutant of ORF58 (pOka-BACΔ58) from the Oka parental genome cloned into a bacterial artificial chromosome (pOka-BAC). Results The ORF58-deleted virus (rpOkaΔ58) was reconstituted from the pOka-BACΔ58 genome in MRC-5 cells, indicating that the ORF58 gene is non-essential for virus growth. Comparison of the growth rate of rpOkaΔ58 and recombinant wild-type virus by assessing plaque sizes revealed no significant differences between them both in MRC-5 cells and malignant melanoma cells. Conclusion This study shows that the ORF58 gene is dispensable for viral replication and does not affect the virus' ability to form plaques in vitro.

Abstract

Varicella, or chickenpox, is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), a member of the human herpesvirus family. The disease progresses rapidly with onset of a low-grade fever and general malaise, and is followed with a rash that progresses from a macular eruption to papule, to vesicle, and finally to crusting. The is no vaccine currently available and no susceptible experimental animal host. A culture technique for isolating VZV using the human embryonic lung (HEL) cell system has been introduced. By means of this system, the stage of infection involving peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) has been demonstrated in immunocompetent children ill with varicella, just before and after the onset of the disease. The study group consisted of 21 children who were in good health prior to the development of the disease and were members of a household in which a child developed the typical vesicular eruption. Blood was drawn prior to the onset of disease. Temperatures and vesicle counts were recorded . The severity of the disease was estimated by the extent of skin involvement. In 13 of 21 cases, the extent of virus-infected PBMC could be estimated in blood samples obtained three days prior to the appearance of vesicular eruptions. The number of vesicles was correlated with body temperature the duration of fever and the number of infected cells. Evidence is presented for the role of circulating T and B lymphocytes in the dissemination of VZV in immunocompetent children. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Abstract

Exanthem subitum, or roseola infantum, is caused by human herpesvirus type 6 (HHV-6). It appears as a rash, but is not as contagious as other childhood diseases such as measles or chickenpox; however, outbreaks do occur. This article describes the characteristics of an outbreak among six infants aged 6 to 11 months who were living in an orphanage. The patients were housed in a room with 21 other infants and did not leave that room during the day. They developed fevers within a nine-day period, which lasted in each case between two and five days. Diarrhea developed and a rash covering the whole body appeared after the fever subsided. Blood tests revealed that antibodies against HHV-6 were present after the acute phase of the disease had passed. Eleven of the remaining infants in the room had HHV-6 antibodies; three others who were tested did not. It was considered likely that the infants acquired the HHV-6 infection from a single infected nurse or infant. Abstract

We developed the Electron-Tracking Compton Camera (ETCC) with reconstructing the track of a recoil electron in Compton process for both sub-MeV and MeV gamma rays to explore MeV gamma-ray astronomy in space. By adding the direction of a recoil electron to Compton reconstruction method, the direction of the incident gamma ray is determined for each individual photon. Also, an angle between the recoil electron and scattered gamma ray is powerful for the kinematical background-rejection. Since MeV gamma-ray astronomy has suffered from huge background so far, this new method is expected to increase the sensitivity. In the simulation, a 50 cm cubic ETCC would provide about 10 times better sensitivity than that of COMPTEL for one year observation in space. As a first step, we observed diffuse cosmic and atmospheric gamma rays at balloon altitudes with an ETCC consisting of the 10 cm cubic Time Projection Chamber (micro-TPC) and the GSO crystal pixel arrays surrounding the micro-TPC (SMILE-I). This instrument was launched on 1st September, 2006 from the Sanriku Balloon Center, and we successfully carried out about 3-hour observation time at an altitude of 32-35 km, and consequently obtained the both gamma-ray spectra between 0.1 and 1 MeV. In addition, this result indicates that the expected detection sensitivity of a future SMILE experiment between 150 keV and 20 MeV would provide a ten times better sensitivity than those of other missions at around 1 MeV.
