The mottled skate Beringraja pulchra is a coastal fish caught by gillnet and bottom trawl fisheries in Hokkaido, Japan. We recently found a parasitic copepod identical to Pseudocharopinus markewitschi (Gusev, 1951) on this commercially important fish. A total of 109 host individuals caught off the coast of northern Hokkaido, Japan, were examined for adult females of this copepod, and 67 cases (61.5%) of infection comprised with 31 cases (67.4%) of 46 males and 36 cases (57.1%) of 63 females were found. The parasite specimens (n = 229) were recovered mainly from the dorsal side of the pelvic fin (n = 168, 73.4%), followed by the claspers (n = 32, 14.0%). The mottled skate is thought to spend most of its lifetime lying in sand or crawling on the seafloor. Therefore, the biased infection to the dorsal side of the pelvic fin may imply that site selection favors less susceptible for disturbances resulting from such host-specific behavior.

Information about the reproductive status of free-ranging pinnipeds provides useful insight into their population dynamics, which is essential to their management and conservation. To determine the reproductive status of individual animals, blood sampling is often required despite being impractical to collect in open water. Hair as an endocrine marker has been used to less invasively assess the reproductive status of terrestrial animals. However, it is unknown whether pinniped reproductive status can be assessed from hair samples. Here, we examine testosterone levels in hair obtained from 57 male northern fur seals and used it to compare their age class and spermatogenesis during the non-breeding season off Hokkaido. We isolated testosterone from the samples using gas chromatography and measured testosterone levels using time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay. Testosterone levels in hair increased towards the breeding season. In May, testosterone levels were the highest in seals aged between 4 and 7 years, followed by those over the age of 8 years and under the age of 4 years. Spermatids, the final phase of spermatogenesis, were present in the seals sampled between April and June, even though testosterone levels were low in April. The seals with spermatids in May showed the highest testosterone levels. Our results demonstrate that seals with higher testosterone levels in May are likely to be mature males (≥4 years). Since hair can be collected using biopsy darts in the field, it will be possible to less invasively determine testosterone levels of male seals in the future.

It's not always possible to obtain samples from dead male pinnipeds that are fresh enough to determine the histological characteristics of spermatogenesis and their stage of sexual maturity. We propose that the morphometrics of genital organs of northern fur seals, Callorhinus ursinus, can be used as a new indicator of sexual maturity. We analyzed data from collected records of male fur seals around Hokkaido during 2011–2017 to examine morphometrics of genital organs and their stage in histological characteristics of spermatogenesis. First, we investigated ontogenetic and seasonal variation in three genital organs: testes, epididymides, and bacula. Second, we classified the stages of histological characteristics of spermatogenesis into three groups (Stage A–C) using non-linear discriminant analysis, based on the stage in histological characteristics of spermatogenesis determined by histological observation of seminiferous tubules. Testicular size, testicular mass, and epididymal mass showed seasonal variation associated with spermatogenesis. From our analysis, the stage in histological characteristics of spermatogenesis could be estimated using testicular mass with high accuracy of predicting spermatogenesis. And measurement of baculum was suggested to be an indicator of predicting sexual maturity. We conclude that this simple estimation may be used to determine sexual maturity based on individual growth patterns.

Northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) disperse to broad areas and overwinter in the North Pacific Ocean during the non-breeding season. Fur seals breeding on islands off Russia mainly overwinter in the Sea of Japan and the off Pacific side of Japan in this season. Although the distribution of fur seals seems to vary with sexes and growth stages in this season, there is little information around Japan. We analysed data on stranding and collecting records of fur seals in the non-breeding season around northern Japan during 2005–2014 for investigating their intra-seasonal and spatial occurrence. The sex and growth stage composition differed between sampling areas. Adult males were dominant in the Sea of Japan, while juveniles and adult females were dominant in the Pacific coast of northern Japan. Compared with previous researches, our results can provide important information for elucidating migration pattern and habitat selection of each sex and growth stage around northern Japan.

Elucidating the response of marine predators to oceanographic features helps in understanding their foraging strategies and the cause of their spatial overlap and interference with fishery activities. Northern fur seal is a highly pelagic species during the wintering period. In recent years, fur seals have consistently been found distributed near the coast of southwest Hokkaido, Japan. Because interference by fur seals with coastal fishery activities has become a serious concern, an understanding is sought as to why fur seals come ashore in this area. We conducted ship-based observations and estimated fur seal density. To elucidate the spatial and seasonal association of fur seal distribution and ocean environments, we constructed statistical models to describe how potential prey distribution and oceanographic features influenced the fur seal spatial distribution during the wintering period. Fur seal distribution corresponded markedly to potential prey distribution, and they tended to aggregate along the narrow continental shelf that is the main geographic feature of this area, which is 2000 m deep and approximately 10 km from the coast. Walleye pollock [Gadus chαlcogrαmmα (Theragra chαlcogrαmmα)] and arabesque greenling (Pleurogrammus azonus), which are one of the main prey for fur seals, move to the shallow area to spawn on the continental shelf seasonally, so potential prey abundance could be higher in coastal areas than offshore. Moreover, the absence of a mesopelagic biotic community may be one of the main factors in the coastal distribution of the fur seal.
