Abstract

We demonstrate the first ever recorded positron-emission tomography (PET) imaging and dosimetry of a FLASH proton beam at the Proton Center of the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Two scintillating LYSO crystal arrays, read out by silicon photomultipliers, were configured with a partial field of view of a cylindrical poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) phantom irradiated by a FLASH proton beam. The proton beam had a kinetic energy of 75.8 MeV and an intensity of about 3.5 × 1010 protons that were extracted over 101.5 ms-long spills. The radiation environment was characterized by cadmium–zinc–telluride and plastic scintillator counters. Preliminary results indicate that the PET technology used in our tests can efficiently record FLASH beam events. The instrument yielded informative and quantitative imaging and dosimetry of beam-activated isotopes in a PMMA phantom, as supported by Monte Carlo simulations. These studies open a new PET modality that can lead to improved imaging and monitoring of FLASH proton therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Ammonia adsorption on and diffusion into thin ice films grown on a Pt(111) surface were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal desorption spectroscopy. After exposing the crystalline ice film to ammonia molecules at 45 K (ammonia/ice film), we have detected an intriguing feature at 1470 cm-1 in the FTIR spectra, which is derived from the adsorption of ammonia on the ice with a characteristic structure which appears in thin film range. The peak intensity of this feature decreases gradually as the thickness of the substrate ice increases. In addition, we have detected a feature at 1260 cm-1 which appears after annealing the ammonia/ice film. The feature corresponds to the ammonia molecules which reach the ice/Pt(111) interface through the ice film. Intriguingly, the intensity of this feature decreases with the ice thickness and there is a linear relation of the peak intensity of the features at 1470 and 1260 cm-1. We propose a model in which the solubility of the ammonia molecules is much higher for the thin ice film than that for the ideal ice. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The nitridation mechanism of silicon at room temperature under exposure to 100–1000 eV N+2 ion beams has been studied in situ in an ultrahigh vacuum apparatus using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The increase of the nitrogen content in a surface layer as a function of the ion dose was described by a simple formula which was derived by assuming random occupation of the reaction sites in the penetration zone of the nitrogen atoms. A change of the binding energy and the width of the N1s x-ray photoelectron spectrum during the reaction was observed and discussed with the component ratio N/Sireacted. The Si2p x-ray photoelectron spectra were deconvoluted into five components of Si(0), Si(1), Si(2), Si(3), and Si(4) by curve fitting, where Si(n) represents the component of Si bonded to n nitrogen atoms. Their populations were dependent on the ion dose and the ion energy. The nitride layers formed in the Si surface with low energy beams of 100–200 eV had near-stoichiometric composition of Si3N4. With beams of energy higher than 300 eV, however, they were nonstoichiometric compounds SiNy (y<1.3) which were mixtures of those components. The influence of the beam energy was observed by the chemical shifts of the N1s and Si2p peaks at the saturation of the N content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The adsorbed state of benzene on the Si(100) surface at 90 and 300 K has been investigated by the use of thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Benzene is chemisorbed nondissociatively on Si(100) at 300 K, and the fractional saturation coverage corresponds to 0.27 benzene molecule per surface Si atom. It is proposed that chemisorbed benzene is di-σ bonded to two adjacent Si atoms saturating the dangling bonds on Si(100). At 90 K, physisorbed multilayers of benzene molecules are formed in addition to the chemisorbed layer. The multilayers consist of the metastable transition layer (α2) and ‘‘bulk’’ multilayers (α3). These results are markedly different from those of benzene on the Si(111)(7×7) surface, and the origin of the crystal-face specificity is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have measured the cross section of the 7 Be p , g 8 B reaction for E c.m. 185.8 , 134.7, and 111.7 keV using a radioactive 7 Be target (132 mCi). Single and coincidence spectra of b 1 and a particles from 8 B and 8 Be decay, respectively, were measured using a large acceptance spectrometer. The zero en- ergy S factor inferred from these data is 18.5 6 2.4 eV b and a weighted mean value of 18.8 6 1.7 eV b (theoretical uncertainty included) is deduced when combining this value with our previous results at higher energies ispartof: Physical Review C, Nuclear Physics vol:71 issue:5 status: published

Abstract

Graphical features on map, charts, diagrams and graph drawings usually must be annotated with text labels in order to convey their meaning. In this paper we focus on a problem that arises when labeling schematized maps, e.g. for subway networks. We present algorithms for labeling points on a line with axis-parallel rectangular labels of equal height. Our aim is to maximize label size under the constraint that all points must be labeled. Even a seemingly strong simplification of the general point-labeling problem, namely to decide whether a set of points on a horizontal line can be labeled with sliding rectangular labels, turns out to be weakly NPcomplete. This is the first labeling problem that is known to belong to this class. We give a pseudo-polynomial time algorithm for it. In case of a sloping line points can be labeled with maximum-size square labels in O(n log n) time if four label positions per point are allowed and in O(n 3 log n) time if labels can slide. We also investigate rectangular labels.

Abstract

Annotating maps, graphs, and diagrams with pieces of text is an important step in information visualization that is usually referred to as label placement. We define nine label-placement models for labeling points with axis-parallel rectangles given a weight for each point. There are two groups; fixed-position models and slider models. We aim to maximize the weight sum of those points that receive a label. We first compare our models by giving bounds for the ratios between the weights of maximum-weight labelings in different models. Then we present algorithms for labeling n points with unit-height rectangles. We show how an O(n log n)-time factor-2 approximation algorithm and a PTAS for fixed-position models can be extended to handle the weighted case. Our main contribution is the first algorithm for weighted sliding labels. Its approximation factor is (2 + ?), it runs in O n 2 /?) time and uses O n/? space. We also investigate some special cases.
