Abstract Objective When people attempt to suppress stereotypes, they often end up making stereotypical judgments. The adverse effects of this form of suppression are called “paradoxical effects.” This study examined the effect of perspective-taking as a strategy to reduce the paradoxical effects related to stereotype suppression. Specifically, this study addressed stereotypes within the context of women’s mathematical abilities, with Japanese university students as participants. It was predicted that when participants suppressed the stereotype of a woman, those who engaged in perspective-taking toward that woman would make less stereotypical judgments of other women, compared with those who did not. Moreover, as this study focuses on gender stereotypes, an exploratory analysis was conducted to investigate whether the effects of engaging in perspective-taking about women vary depending on the participants’ gender. Results Although no significant effect was observed and the hypothesis was not supported, and while the results of this study were statistically inadequate, they suggest that among the female participants, those who did not engage in perspective-taking showed the paradoxical effects of stereotype suppression. However, those paradoxical effects were not observed among those who performed perspective-taking.

Abstract Background Attachment theory proposes that attachment security facilitates personal growth. However, attachment security origins in relationship history, and thus, how people treat their experiences may influence the outcomes of attachment security. People differ in the degree in believing that human beings have free will, and belief in free will may influence the relationship between experiences and outcomes. The present cross-sectional study investigated the relationships between attachment security, belief in free will, and personal growth initiative. Methods We used the cross-sectional data of 346 Chinese college students for data analysis, including correlational analyses, regression, and moderation analyses. The nine-item Chinese version of the Experiences in Close Relationships-Relationship Structures Scale, the sixteen-item Chinese version of the Personal Growth Initiative Scale-II, and the seven-item Free Will subscale of the Chinese version of the Free Will and Determinism Plus Scale were utilized. Results Results showed attachment avoidance and belief in free will, not attachment anxiety, was associated with personal growth initiative. Belief in free will moderated the association between attachment avoidance and personal growth initiative. When the centered score of belief in free will was higher than 0.64, attachment avoidance was no longer associated with personal growth initiative. 85.84% of our data were below this Johnson-Neyman significance region, and 14.16% were above. In other words, only those who scored higher than 0.64 on free will beliefs were able to pursue personal growth despite their high attachment avoidance. Conclusions These findings suggest that when believing in free will, avoidantly attached people may believe in their ability to pursue personal growth and think their future has more possibilities, not influenced by other factors like social support, which they think they lack.

Abstract Non-invasive delivery of hyaluronan into the stratum corneum (SC) is extremely difficult because of its high molecular weight and the strong barrier of the SC. We developed a safe method of administering hyaluronan into the human SC and determined its penetration route. The amount of hyaluronan that penetrated into the SC was 1.5–3 times higher in the presence of magnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl2) than other metal chlorides. The root-mean-square radius of hyaluronan in water decreased with the addition of MgCl2. Moreover, MgCl2 solutions maintained their dissolved state on a plastic plate for a long time, suggesting that size compaction and inhibition of hyaluronan precipitation on the skin enhanced hyaluronan into the SC. Our results also strongly suggest that an intercellular route contributes to the penetration of hyaluronan from the upper to the middle layer of the SC. No disruption to the SC barrier was observed after continuous use once a day for 1 month, demonstrating the potential of our method for the safe, topical application of hyaluronan.

Electrons driven coherently by laser light can exhibit nonperturbative geometric effects. Drastic deformation and gap openings of the electrons' Floquet bands occur at one-photon resonances since the electron and hole bands hybridize through their replicas at the lowest-order photon exchange. We study the evolution of Floquet bands in three-dimensional (3D) materials driven by circularly polarized light (CPL) using the Dirac model. We find that the light-induced gap closes at a select few points in the momentum space where Floquet Weyl points are formed. The Weyl points are protected by their monopole charge and can merge, separate, or pair annihilate depending on the anisotropy of electrons and the ellipticity of the incident light. In isotropic 3D Dirac electrons driven by CPL, the Weyl points merge to form Floquet double-Weyl points with topological charge ±2. Our results reveal a universal aspect of light-matter interactions in 3D quantum materials and open a route towards controllable versatile electromagnetic responses associated with light-induced Floquet Weyl states.

Abstract Background Elderly patients with heart failure (HF) have been observed to decrease activities of daily living (ADL) during hospitalization. Prevention of ADL decline from shortening of hospital stays is especially important in the elderly, because decreasing ADL is associated with poor prognosis. We investigated the relationship between the early initiation of tolvaptan (TLV) after hospitalization and the length of hospital stay in patients with HF aged younger than 80 years and aged 80 years and older. Abstract Background In recent years, there has been growing interest in exploring ways to facilitate positive psychological dispositions, including resilience. The goal of the present study was to explore the possibility that trait mindfulness facilitates attachment security and thus enhances resilience. Methods We conducted two studies based on cross-sectional surveys. In Study 1, data of 207 students studying in Japan was collected. In Study 2, we used a different sample of 203 participants and different measurements to replicate the findings of Study 1. Results The results of Study 1 revealed that mindfulness positively predicted resilience, while attachment anxiety and avoidance were mediators between mindfulness and resilience. The results of Study 2 showed that mindfulness positively predicted resilience, and the mediating effect of attachment avoidance was significant, but the mediating effect of attachment anxiety was not significant. Conclusions It is possible to facilitate attachment security through cultivating trait mindfulness, and in this way, resilience could be enhanced. The effect of different components of mindfulness on attachment and resilience requires further studies.

β blockers (BBs) play an important role in heart failure (HF) treatment. However, orthostatic hypotension (OH) is sometimes caused by BBs. The bisoprolol transdermal patch works more slowly and is long acting compared with the bisoprolol fumarate tablet. The risk of OH may be reduced by using the bisoprolol transdermal patch. We evaluated 57 consecutive patients who were taking the bisoprolol fumarate tablet for chronic HF with hypertension from November 2016 to September 2017. We switched the patients to the bisoprolol transdermal patch. Because 12 of 57 subjects could not continue using the bisoprolol transdermal patch, we analyzed the remaining 45 patients. We investigated BP, blood tests, and changes in BP from supine to standing positions before and after 6 months of switching from tablet to patch. Background: It is unclear that the difference in efficacy of tolvaptan (TLV) on the length of hospital stay for both heart failure (HF) preserved ejection fraction (EF) (HFpEF) and reduced EF (HFrEF) patients. Methods: We investigated 369 patients who were hospitalized with HF from February 2011 to June 2016 and initiated TLV. Patients who died in hospital, transferred hospital or clinical scenario 4 or 5 were excluded. Finally, we analyzed 108 patients with HFpEF and 96 patients with HFrEF. We evaluated the relationship between the length of hospital stay and the date of TLV initiation. Moreover, we compared the early use (within the median) and delayed use (the median or later) of TLV. Results: The date of TLV initiation was statistically associated with the length of hospital stay in both HFpEF and HFrEF (HFpEF: r = 0.625, P < 0.001, HFrEF: r = 0.618, P < 0.001). In HFpEF, the length of hospital stay in delayed use group was significantly longer than the early use group (22.2 ± 10.7 days and 38.1 ± 22.6 days, P < 0.001). The result was similar in HFrEF (22.0 ± 15.0 days and 32.1 ± 22.0 days, P = 0.008). On the other hand, there were no statistically significant differences in the length of hospital stay after initiation of TLV in both HFpEF and HFrEF. Other findings (including the severity of HF) were similar between the early use group and the delayed group in HFpEF and HFrEF. Conclusions: The time until TLV initiation after hospitalization was related to the length of hospital stay in HFpEF and HFrEF patients.

Characterizing higher order nonlinearities and responses to optical excitations in materials is challenging. Here, the authors use high harmonic generation in sapphire crystals to extract higher order susceptibilities and characterize the nonlinear electronic response directly from experimental measurements.

Abstract Background The relationship between various external agents such as pollen, food, and infectious agents and human sensitivity exists and is variable depending upon individual’s health conditions. For example, we believe that the pathogenetic potential of the Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV), the resident virus in skin, is variable and depends from the degree of individual’s reactivity. MCPyV as well as Epstein-Barr virus, which are normally connected with humans under the form of subclinical infection, are thought to be involved at various degrees in several neoplastic and inflammatory diseases. In this review, we cover two types of Langerhans cell neoplasms, the Langerhans cell sarcoma (LCS) and Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), represented as either neoplastic or inflammatory diseases caused by MCPyV. Methods We meta-analyzed both our previous analyses, composed of quantitative PCR for MCPyV-DNA, proteomics, immunohistochemistry which construct IL-17 endocrine model and interleukin-1 (IL-1) activation loop model, and other groups’ data. Results We have shown that there were subgroups associated with the MCPyV as a causal agent in these two different neoplasms. Comparatively, LCS, distinct from the LCH, is a neoplastic lesion (or sarcoma) without presence of inflammatory granuloma frequently observed in the elderly. LCH is a proliferative disease of Langerhans-like abnormal cells which carry mutations of genes involved in the RAS/MAPK signaling pathway. We found that MCPyV may be involved in the development of LCH. Conclusion We hypothesized that a subgroup of LCS developed according the same mechanism involved in Merkel cell carcinoma pathogenesis. We proposed LCH developed from an inflammatory process that was sustained due to gene mutations. We hypothesized that MCPyV infection triggered an IL-1 activation loop that lies beneath the pathogenesis of LCH and propose a new triple-factor model.

Abstract With the aim to reveal universal features of hadronic matter and correlated Dirac insulators in strong AC-electric fields, we study the N=2 $$ \mathcal{N}=2 $$ supersymmetric QCD with a finite quark mass driven by a rotating electric field ℰ x + iℰ y = ℰe iΩt . The analysis is done in the holographically dual D3/D7 system in the co-rotating frame, effectively. The nonequilibrium phase diagram is determined from the threshold electric field at which the insulator phase breaks down to a conductive phase due to the AC version of the Schwinger mechanism. The external field induces a rotating current Jx+iJy=JeiΩt $$ {\mathcal{J}}_x+\kern0.62em i{\mathcal{J}}_y=\mathcal{J}{e^i}^{\Omega t} $$ originating from vacuum polarization and dissipative current in the insulating and conductive phases respectively. Intriguing features are observed as the frequency Ω approaches resonance with the meson excitation energy Ωmeson. There, the threshold minimizes and a condensate of vector mesons with oscillating current exists even in the zero driving field limit. This state, which we call Floquet condensate of vector mesons, is expected to be dynamically stable realizing a non-thermal fixed point that breaks time translational and reversal symmetries. Our finding has many similarities with exciton BEC discussed in solid state systems, where the semiconductor is to be replaced by materials hosting gapped Dirac electrons, e.g. 3D topological insulators or bismuth. Vector meson Floquet condensate may also have implications in the pre-thermalized dynamics in heavy ion collision experiments.

Background: The optimal therapy in patients with heart failure preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and hypertension (HT) has not been revealed. The beta blocker (BB) and the renin angiotensin aldosterone system inhibitor (RAAS-I) are recommend as class IIa in patients with HFpEF. The calcium channel blocker (CCB), a major anti-hypertensive drugs in Japan, is also recommend as class IIa in patients with HFpEF. However, the difference between azelnidipine, an L type CCB, and cilnidipine, an N type CCB, is unclear. We investigated the difference between azelnidipine and cilnidipine in patients with HFpEF and HT. Methods: Twenty-five consecutive HFpEF patients treated with BB and RAAS-I from April 2013 to March 2015 were enrolled. Initially, cilnidipine was used, and then switched to azelnidipine. Age, gender, blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), blood tests, echocardiography, and cardiac-scintigraphy (123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine: MIBG) were measured before and after six months from azelnidipine administration. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in BP. B type natriuretic peptides were significantly reduced (pre-state: 195.4 ± 209.7 pg/ml and post-state: 140.7 ± 136.4 pg/ml, p = 0.050). In echocardiography, the TEI index tended to be decreased (pre-state: 0.47 ± 0.15 and post-state: 0.42 ± 0.08, p = 0.057). As for MIBG, there was no significant change in the heart/mediastinum ratio. However, the washout rate was significantly reduced (pre-state: 44.7 ± 12.2 and post-state: 40.7 ± 12.1, p = 0.011). In addition, there was no statistically significant change, although HR tended to decrease by switching to azelnidipine (pre-state: 62.7 ± 11.6 and post-state: 61.8 ± 16.5, p = 0.373). Conclusions: In patients with HT and HFpEF, azelnidipine improved the severity of HF and cardiac sympathetic nerve activity compared with cilnidipine.

Abstract Floquet states can be realized in quantum systems driven by continuous time-periodic perturbations. It is known that a state known as the Floquet Weyl semimetal can be realized when free Dirac fermions are placed in a rotating electric field. What will happen if strong interaction is introduced to this system? Will the interaction wash out the characteristic features of Weyl semimetals such as the Hall response? Is there a steady state and what is its thermodynamic behavior? We answer these questions using AdS/CFT correspondence in the N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 supersymmetric massless QCD in a rotating electric field in the large N c limit realizing the first example of a “holographic Floquet state”. In this limit, gluons not only mediate interaction, but also act as an energy reservoir and stabilize the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS). We obtain the electric current induced by a rotating electric field: in the high frequency region, the Ohm’s law is satisfied, while we recover the DC nonlinear conductivity at low frequency, which was obtained holographically in a previous work. The thermodynamic properties of the NESS, e.g., fluctuation-dissipation relation, is characterized by the effective Hawking temperature that is defined from the effective horizon giving a holographic meaning to the “periodic thermodynamic” concept. In addition to the strong (pump) rotating electric field, we apply an additional weak (probe) electric field in the spirit of the pump-probe experiments done in condensed matter experiments. Weak DC and AC probe analysis in the background rotating electric field shows Hall currents as a linear response, therefore the Hall response of Floquet Weyl semimetals survives at the strong coupling limit. We also find frequency mixed response currents, i.e., a heterodyning effect, characteristic to periodically driven Floquet systems.

Based on the QCD string picture at confining phase, we conjecture that the deconfinement transition always accompanies a condensation of higher meson resonances with a power-law behavior, “meson turbulence”. We employ the AdS/CFT correspondence to calculate the meson turbulence for N=2 supersymmetric QCD at large Nc and at strong coupling limit, and find that the energy distribution to each meson level n scales as nα with the universal scaling α=−5. The universality is checked for various ways to attain the quark deconfinement: a static electric field below/around the critical value, a time-dependent electric field quench, and a time-dependent quark mass quench, all result in the turbulent meson condensation with the universal power α=−5 around the deconfinement.

In a QCD-like strongly coupled gauge theory at large Nc, using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we find that heavy quark deconfinement is accompanied by a coherent condensation of higher meson resonances. This is revealed in non-equilibrium deconfinement transitions triggered by static, as well as quenched electric fields even below the Schwinger limit. There, we observe a “turbulent” energy flow to higher meson modes, which finally results in the quark deconfinement. Our observation is consistent with seeing deconfinement as a condensation of long QCD strings.

We report a rare 16-year-old male case of Klippel-Feil anomaly associated with fetal alcohol syndrome exhibiting complex congenital vascular anomalies. The congenital vascular anomalies observed were the absence of a left internal carotid artery, a left vertebral artery arising from the subclavian artery in a very high cervical location and a bovine arch. The vascular and vertebral anomalies were evaluated using CT and MRI before cervical surgery.

Abstract Background Chemical bioproduction has attracted attention as a key technology in a decarbonized society. In computational design for chemical bioproduction, it is necessary to predict changes in metabolic fluxes when up-/down-regulating enzymatic reactions, that is, responses of the system to enzyme perturbations. Structural sensitivity analysis (SSA) was previously developed as a method to predict qualitative responses to enzyme perturbations on the basis of the structural information of the reaction network. However, the network structural information can sometimes be insufficient to predict qualitative responses unambiguously, which is a practical issue in bioproduction applications. To address this, in this study, we propose BayesianSSA, a Bayesian statistical model based on SSA. BayesianSSA extracts environmental information from perturbation datasets collected in environments of interest and integrates it into SSA predictions. Results We applied BayesianSSA to synthetic and real datasets of the central metabolic pathway of Escherichia coli. Our result demonstrates that BayesianSSA can successfully integrate environmental information extracted from perturbation data into SSA predictions. In addition, the posterior distribution estimated by BayesianSSA can be associated with the known pathway reported to enhance succinate export flux in previous studies. Conclusions We believe that BayesianSSA will accelerate the chemical bioproduction process and contribute to advancements in the field.

Introduction Xanthogranulomatous prostatitis is a very rare benign inflammatory lesion of the prostate that may be similar to prostatic carcinoma in clinical presentation and radiological characteristics. Case presentation A 77‐year‐old man was admitted to our hospital because of high prostate‐specific antigen level. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a 6.5 cm in diameter multifocal mass with hemorrhage at the base of the left lobe of the prostate. Biopsy was performed. Histopathological examination revealed no evidence of malignancy. After biopsy, he developed recurring fever, so the patient was treated with open suprapubic tumor resection to control infection. Pathological examination revealed xanthogranulomatous prostatitis. Conclusion It is necessary to diagnose xanthogranulomatous prostatitis by cooperation between urologists and pathologists, and consider xanthogranulomatous prostatitis as a differential diagnosis. Treatment should be conservative in principle; however, surgical intervention may be necessary.

IntroductionThis study aimed to estimate prevalence and incidence of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and comorbid relationships between ADHD and other psychiatric disorders in Japan.MethodsUsing the real-world JMDC Claims Database, we conducted a cross-sectional study (analysis years 2017–2021) and retrospective cohort study (observation 2 years before/after the initial ADHD diagnosis; data collection 2005–2021; enrollment 2017–2019). Patients were male or female, aged 0–57 years. Cross-sectional study patients had an ADHD or other psychiatric disorder diagnosis (with or without medication) and were continuously registered in each analysis year; retrospective study patients had an ADHD diagnosis and ≥2 years’ observation before and after diagnosis. Endpoints were annual prevalence and incidence of ADHD in Japan, prevalence and risk ratio of each psychiatric comorbidity in patients with ADHD, prevalence and risk ratios of ADHD in patients with each psychiatric comorbidity, and prevalence of psychiatric disorders before/after the initial ADHD diagnosis.ResultsADHD prevalence in children/adolescents and adults increased each year from 2017 to 2021. Prevalence in boys was 3.5–4.1 times higher than in girls. Prevalence in adults was lower than in children/adolescents, with a small sex difference. ADHD was highly comorbid with various psychiatric disorders. In 2019, the most common comorbidity in children/adolescents with ADHD was autism spectrum disorder (ASD; 54.4%); in adults, it was mood disorders (60.9%). ADHD prevalence in patients with various psychiatric disorders was higher than in the control population. ADHD prevalence was highest in patients with oppositional defiance disorder among both children/adolescents and adults (77.2% and 69.2%, respectively). In the retrospective cohort study (N = 14,940), the most common psychiatric disorders diagnosed prior to ADHD diagnosis were ASD in children/adolescents (33.9% of patients), and mood disorders and sleep disorders in adults (36.9% and 23.8% of patients, respectively).DiscussionADHD was comorbid with various psychiatric disorders in Japan. In children and adolescents with ADHD, ASD was often diagnosed prior to ADHD. Psychiatric disorders, especially mood disorders and sleep disorders, were frequently diagnosed prior to the initial ADHD diagnosis in adults. The likelihood of comorbid ADHD should be considered when diagnosing adult patients with psychiatric disorders.

Abstract Aim The present study aimed to examine the association between copy number variations (CNVs) in parkin (PRKN) and schizophrenia (SCZ) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in a large case–control sample. Method Array comparative genomic hybridization was performed on 3111 cases with SCZ, 1236 cases with ASD, and 2713 controls. We systematically prioritized likely pathogenic CNVs (LP‐CNVs) in PRKN and examined their association with SCZ and ASD. Results In total, 3014 SCZ cases (96.9%), 1205 ASD cases (97.5%), and 2671 controls (98.5%) passed quality control. We found that monoallelic carriers of LP‐CNVs in PRKN were common (70/6890, 1.02%) and were not at higher risk of SCZ (p = 0.29) or ASD (p = 0.72). We observed that the distribution pattern of LP‐CNVs in the Japanese population was consistent with those in other populations. We also identified a patient diagnosed with SCZ and early‐onset Parkinson's disease carrying biallelic pathogenic CNVs in PRKN. The absence of Parkinson's symptoms in 10 other monoallelic carriers of the same pathogenic CNV further reflects the lack of effect of monoallelic pathogenic variants in PRKN in the absence of a second hit. Conclusion The present findings suggest that monoallelic CNVs in PRKN do not confer a significant risk for SCZ or ASD. However, further studies to investigate the association between biallelic CNVs in PRKN and SCZ and ASD are warranted.

BackgroundA rodent autism spectrum disorder (ASD) model based on prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) is widely recognized as a prominent model. Social behavior in rodent ASD models has primarily been evaluated through a three-chamber approach test. However, in this study, we focused on social attention in the VPA model of ASD.MethodsIn male C57BL/6 J mice, attentional behaviors toward conspecifics were examined through reaching tasks around 9–11 weeks of age. On embryonic day 12.5, pregnant mice underwent a subcutaneous injection of 600 mg/kg VPA sodium salt dissolved in 0.9% saline solution (VPA group) or saline solution alone (Sal group) into their neck fat. Thirty-six mice—nine each in the VPA and saline groups, and 18 partners—underwent training in reaching behavior. Subsequently, we examined whether the VPA or Sal group demonstrated focused attention toward their partners during reaching tasks. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) (condition [VPA/Sal] × situation [face-to-face (attention)/not paying attention (not attention)]) was conducted on the average success rate of the situation. Additionally, we measured the duration of sniffing behavior between pairs of mice in an open field twice in total at 4 and 8 weeks of age before reaching task. The pairs were constructed by pairing a VPA or Sal group mouse with its partner, with the objective of facilitating initial encounters between the mice. A one-way ANOVA was conducted on the average duration of sniffing behavior data from 4 weeks and a second one-way ANOVA on data from 8 weeks.ResultsThe analysis revealed a significant interaction between condition and situation in the reaching task [F (1, 28) = 6.75, p = 0.015, ηp2 = 0.19]. IntroductionDuchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disorder caused by mutations in the dystrophin-encoding gene that leads to muscle necrosis and degeneration with chronic inflammation during growth, resulting in progressive generalized weakness of the skeletal and cardiac muscles. We previously demonstrated the therapeutic effects of systemic administration of dental pulp mesenchymal stromal cells (DPSCs) in a DMD animal model. We showed preservation of long-term muscle function and slowing of disease progression. However, little is known regarding the effects of cell therapy on the metabolic abnormalities in DMD. Therefore, here, we aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying the immunosuppressive effects of DPSCs and their influence on DMD metabolism.MethodsA comprehensive metabolomics-based approach was employed, and an ingenuity pathway analysis was performed to identify dystrophy-specific metabolomic impairments in the mdx mice to assess the therapeutic response to our established systemic DPSC-mediated cell therapy approach.Results and DiscussionWe identified DMD-specific impairments in metabolites and their responses to systemic DPSC treatment. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of the metabolomics-based approach and provide insights into the therapeutic effects of DPSCs in DMD. Our findings could help to identify molecular marker targets for therapeutic intervention and predict long-term therapeutic efficacy.

Abstract We show that 3-dimensional AdS spacetime can be semiclassically unstable due to strongly interacting quantum field effects. In our previous paper, we have pointed out the possibility of such an instability of AdS3 by inspecting linear perturbations of the (covering space of) static BTZ black hole with AdS4 gravity dual in the context of holographic semiclassical problems. In the present paper, we further study this issue from thermodynamic viewpoint by constructing asymptotically AdS3 semiclassical solutions and computing free energies of the solutions. We find two asymptotically AdS3 solutions to the semiclassical Einstein equations with non-vanishing source term: the one whose free energy is smaller than that of the BTZ with vanishing source term and the other whose free energy is smaller than that of the global AdS3 with no horizon (thus manifestly zero-temperature background). The instability found in this paper implies the breakdown of the maximal symmetries of AdS3, and its origin is different from the well-known semiclassical linear instability since our holographic semiclassical Einstein equations in 3-dimensions do not involve higher order derivative terms.
