The electronic properties of ScPdGe and ScPdSi, crystallizing in the hexagonal ZrNiAl and orthorhombic TiNiSi structures, respectively, are investigated. ScPdGe and ScPdSi are found to show bulk superconductivity below 0.9 and 1.7 K, respectively, based on electrical resistivity and heat capacity data measured using synthesized polycrystalline samples. First principles calculations indicate the presence of large contributions of Sc 3d and Pd 4d electrons at the Fermi energy in both materials. From lithium-ion batteries to high-temperature superconductors, oxide materials have been widely used in electronic devices. However, demands of future technologies require materials beyond oxides, as anion chemistries distinct from oxygen can expand the palette of mechanisms and phenomena, to achieve superior functionalities. Examples include nitride-based wide bandgap semiconductors and halide perovskite solar cells, with MAPbBr3 being a representation revolutionizing photovoltaics research. Here, we demonstrate magnetoelectric behaviour in quasi-two-dimensional halides (K,Rb)3Mn2Cl7 through simultaneous thermal control of electric and magnetic polarizations by exploiting a polar-to-antipolar displacive transition. Additionally, our calculations indicate a possible polarization switching path including a strong magnetoelectric coupling, indicating halides can be excellent platforms to design future multiferroic and ferroelectric devices. We expect our findings to broaden the exploration of multiferroics to non-oxide materials and open access to novel mechanisms, beyond conventional electric/magnetic control, for coupling ferroic orders., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

We report on the superconductivity in ternary transition metal tellurides Ta2Pd3Te5 and Nb2Pd3Te5, which have a one-dimensional crystal structure. Single-crystalline and polycrystalline samples of Ta2Pd3Te5 show nonmetallic electron conduction, while Ti or W doping results in metallic behavior with a bulk superconducting transition at 2-4 K. In contrast, the polycrystalline samples of Nb2Pd3Te5, which are found to be isostructural to Ta2Pd3Te5, show a bulk superconducting transition at 3.3 K. A magnetic monopole in spin ice is a novel quasiparticle excitation in condensed matter physics, and we found that the ac frequency dependent magnetic susceptibility $\chi(\omega)$ in the two-dimensional (2D) spin ice (so-called kagom\'{e} ice) of Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ shows a single scaling form. This behavior can be understood in terms of the dynamical scaling law for 2D Coulomb gas (CG) systems [Phys. Rev. B 90, 144428 (2014)], characterized by the charge correlation length $\xi (\propto1/\sqrt{\omega_1})$, where $\omega_{1}$ is a characteristic frequency proportional to the peak position of the imaginary part of $\chi(\omega)$. We report the epitaxial thin film synthesis of SrCu$_3$O$_4$ with infinitely stacked Cu$_3$O$_4$ layers composed of edge-sharing CuO$_4$ square-planes, using molecular beam epitaxy. Experimental and theoretical characterizations showed that this material is a metastable phase that can exist by applying tensile biaxial strain from the (001)-SrTiO$_3$ substrate. SrCu$_3$O$_4$ shows an insulating electrical resistivity in accordance with the Cu$^{2+}$ valence state revealed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. First-principles calculations also indicated that the unoccupied $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ band becomes substantially stabilized owing to the absence of apical anions, in contrast to $A_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$ ($A = $Sr, Ba) with an $A_2$Cl$_2$ block layer and therefore a trans-CuO$_4$Cl$_2$ octahedron. SrMoO$_3$ is a promising material for its excellent electrical conductivity, but growing high-quality thin films remains a challenge. Here we synthesized epitaxial films of SrMoO$_3$ using the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) technique under a low oxygen-flow rate. Introduction of SrTiO$_3$ buffer layers of 4--8 unit cells between the film and the (001)-oriented SrTiO$_3$ or KTaO$_3$ substrate was crucial to remove impurities and/or roughness of the film surface. The obtained film shows improved electrical conductivities as compared with films obtained by other techniques. The high quality of the SrMoO$_3$ film is also verified by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements showing clear Fermi surfaces., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

A double-layered perovskite oxide Sr$_3$Mo$_2$O$_7$ is considered a "hidden ladder" system with wide and narrow bands near the Fermi level, for which high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductivity is expected. However, the difficulty in synthesis, especially in the preparation of samples without oxygen deficiency, can hinder the observation of superconductivity. In this study, we constructed a double-layer SrMoO$_3$ block through artificial superlattices with the insulating SrTiO$_3$ block, (SrMoO$_3$)$_m$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_t$ ($m = 2, 4$; $t = 4$). First-principles calculations for bilayered SrMoO$_3$ ($m = 2$) exhibit a wide-narrow band structure near the Fermi level, which bears a close resemblance to Sr$_3$Mo$_2$O$_7$. The dispersion along the $k_z$ direction is strongly suppressed by increasing the number of the SrTiO$_3$ layers, $t$. However, no superconductivity is observed down to 0.1 K. We report the electronic properties of single crystals of candidate nodal-line semimetal CaAgP. The transport properties of CaAgP are understood within the framework of a hole-doped nodal-line semimetal. In contrast, Pd-doped CaAgP shows a drastic increase of magnetoresistance at low magnetic fields and a strong decrease of electrical resistivity at low temperatures probably due to weak antilocalization. Hall conductivity data indicated that the Pd-doped CaAgP has not only hole carriers induced by the Pd doping, but also high-mobility electron carriers in proximity of the Dirac point. Electrical resistivity of Pd-doped CaAgP also showed a superconducting transition with onset temperature of 1.7-1.8 K., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B

We report the synthesis, electronic properties, and electronic structure of LaIrSi-type BaPtP with a noncentrosymmetric cubic crystal structure. Electrical resistivity and heat capacity data taken by using polycrystalline samples indicated that BaPtP is a metal, which was further supported by first principles calculations. A polycrystalline sample of BaPtP showed a zero resistivity below 0.2 K due to the superconducting transition. The first principles calculation results indicated that the spin splitting at around the Fermi energy is large in BaPtP. These results suggest that BaPtP is likely to exhibit interesting physical properties caused by a strong spin-orbit coupling of 5d electrons in the Pt atoms., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, JPS Conf. We report the synthesis, electronic properties, and electronic structure of ullmannite-type PtSbS, which has a cubic crystal structure without space inversion symmetry. Electrical resistivity and magnetization measured at low temperatures suggested that this compound is a bulk superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature of Tc = 0.15 K. First principles calculations indicated that Fermi surfaces of PtSbS include strongly nested hole pockets, which can make this compound interesting if they contribute to the emergence of superconductivity., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We have studied long range orders of electric quadrupole moments described by an effective pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Hamiltonian representing pyrochlore magnets with non-Kramers ions under [111] magnetic field, in relevance to Tb$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Order parameters and phase transitions of this frustrated system are investigated using classical Monte-Carlo simulations. In zero field, the model undergoes a first-order phase transition from a paramagnetic state to an ordered state with an antiparallel arrangement of pseudospins. This pseudospin order is characterized by the wavevector $\boldsymbol{k}=0$ and is selected by an energetic or an order-by-disorder mechanism from degenerate $\boldsymbol{k}=(h,h,h)$ mean-field orders. Under [111] magnetic field this three-dimensional quadrupole order is transformed to a quasi two-dimensional quadrupole order on each kagom\'{e} lattice separated by field-induced ferromagnetic triangular lattices. We developed a new technique for measuring the thermodynamic entropy as a function of the magnetic field angle. This technique enables high-resolution angle-resolved measurements of the entropy in an unprecedentedly short measuring time. When the magnetic field is rotated under adiabatic conditions, the sample temperature changes owing to the field-angle variation of its entropy, which is referred to as the rotational magnetocaloric effect. By investigating this effect along with the specific heat, the field-angle dependence of the entropy can be determined. To demonstrate this technique, we chose the spin-ice compound Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ as a benchmark and showed good agreement between the measured and theoretical entropies as a function of the field angle. The ground states of the frustrated pyrochlore oxide Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering experiments. Three single-crystal samples are investigated; one shows no phase transition ($x=-0.007

A previously unreported Pb-based perovskite PbMoO$_3$ is obtained by high-pressure and high-temperature synthesis. This material crystallizes in the $Pm\bar{3}m$ cubic structure at room temperature, making it distinct from typical Pb-based perovskite oxides with a structural distortion. PbMoO$_3$ exhibits a metallic behavior down to 0.1 K with an unusual $T$-sub linear dependence of the electrical resistivity. Moreover, a large specific heat is observed at low temperatures accompanied by a peak in $C_P/T^3$ around 10 K, in marked contrast to the isostructural metallic system SrMoO$_3$. These transport and thermal properties for PbMoO$_3$, taking into account anomalously large Pb atomic displacements detected through diffraction experiments, are attributed to a low-energy vibrational mode, associated with incoherent off-centering of lone pair Pb$^{2+}$ cations. We discuss the unusual behavior of the electrical resistivity in terms of a polaron-like conduction, mediated by the strong coupling between conduction electrons and optical phonons of the local low-energy vibrational mode., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Inelastic x-ray scattering with meV energy resolution (IXS) is an ideal tool to measure collective excitations in solids and liquids. In non-resonant scattering condition, the cross section is strongly dominated by lattice vibrations (phonons). However, it is possible to probe additional degrees of freedom such as magnetic fluctuations that are strongly coupled to the phonons. The IXS spectrum of the coupled system will contain not only the phonon dispersion (majority component) but also the so far undetected magnetic correlation function (minority component). Here we report the discovery of strong magnon-phonon coupling in LiCrO$_2$ that enables the measurement of magnetic correlations throughout the Brillouin-zone via IXS. We found electromagnon excitations and electric dipole active two-magnon excitations in the magnetically ordered phase and paraelectromagnons in the paramagnetic phase of LiCrO$_2$. We predict that the numerous group of (frustrated) magnets with dominant direct exchange and non-collinear magnetism shows similarly strong coupling and surprisingly large and measurable IXS cross section for magnons and multi-magnon processes., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We report quantum oscillation data on the metallic triangular antiferromagnet PdCrO$_2$. We find that, to very high accuracy, the observed frequencies of PdCrO$_2$ can be reproduced by reconstruction of the (nonmagnetic) PdCoO$_2$ Fermi surface into a reduced zone. The reduced zone corresponds to a magnetic cell containing six chromium sites, giving a $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ in-plane reconstruction, and $\times 2$ interplane reconstruction. The interplane ordering represents a reduction in lattice symmetry, possibly to monoclinic, and an associated lattice distortion is expected. In addition, we report a magnetic transition under an applied in-plane field that is probably equivalent to the spin-flop transition reported for CuCrO$_2$, and present data on its field-angle dependence. The cubic symmetry of pyrochlore iridium oxides R2Ir2O7 (R = Nd, Eu, and Pr) has been investigated by high resolution X-ray diffraction experiments down to 4 K,in order to clarify the relationship between the metal-insulator transition (MIT) and the small structural phase transition suggested by Raman scattering experiments in these compounds. We have found that a small negative thermal expansion of the order of 10^-3 angstroms appears only in Nd2Ir2O7 below the MIT, T_MIT = 34 K, resulting in the magnetovolume effect of the long-range order of Ir moments. However, any breaking of the cubic symmetry of three iridates has not been observed as appearance of superlattice reflections nor splittings of cubic reflections below T_MIT. These results imply that lowering of the cubic symmetry plays a minor role for the change in the electronic state of these compounds, while a formation of the special arrangement of Ir moments plays a major role for the MIT., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We performed neutron single crystal and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction experiments in order to investigate the magnetic and crystal structures of the conductive layered triangular-lattice antiferromagnet PdCrO2 with a putative spin chirality, which contributes to an unconventional anomalous Hall effect. We revealed that the ground-state magnetic structure is a commensurate and nearly-coplanar 120-degrees spin structure. The 120-degrees plane in different Cr layers seem to tilt with one another, leading to a small noncoplanarity. Such a small but finite non-coplanar stacking of the 120-degrees planes gives rise to a finite scalar spin chirality, which may be responsible for the unconventional nature of the Hall effect of PdCrO2., Comment: Phys. High-quality polycrystalline samples of LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 were obtained using high-pressure synthesis technique. The LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 sample prepared by heating at 700 C under 2 GPa showed superconductivity with superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) of Tconset = 11.1 and Tczero = 8.5 K in the electrical resistivity measurements and Tconset = 11.5 and Tcirr = 9.4 K in the magnetic susceptibility measurements, which are obviously higher than those of the LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 polycrystalline samples obtained using conventional solid-state reaction. It was found that the high-Tc phase can be stabilized under high pressure and relatively-low annealing temperature. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the high-Tc phase possessed a small ratio of lattice constants of a and c, c/a., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. PdCrO$_2$ is material which has attracted interest due to the coexistence of metallic conductivity associated with itinerant Pd 4d electrons and antiferromagnetic order arising from localized Cr spins. A central issue is determining to what extent the magnetic order couples to the conduction electrons. Here we perform angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to experimentally characterize the electronic structure. We find that the Fermi surface has contributions from both bulk and surface states, which can be experimentally distinguished and theoretically verified by slab band structure calculations. The bulk Fermi surface shows no signature of electronic reconstruction in the antiferromagnetic state. This observation suggests that there is negligible interaction between the localized Cr spin structure and the itinerant Pd electrons measured by ARPES.

A theory for frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility \chi(\omega) is developed for thermally activated magnetic monopoles in kagome ice. By mapping this system to a two-dimensional (2D) Coulomb gas and then to a sine-Gordon model, we have shown that the susceptibility has a scaling form \chi(\omega)/\chi(0)={\cal F}(\omega/\omega_1), where the characteristic \omega_1 is related to a charge correlation length between diffusively moving monopoles, and to the sine-Gordon principal breather. The dynamical scaling is universal among superfluid and superconducting films, and 2D XY magnets above Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Extremely large magnetoresistance is realized in the nonmagnetic layered metal PdCoO2. In spite of a highly conducting metallic behavior with a simple quasi-two-dimensional hexagonal Fermi surface, the interlayer resistance reaches up to 35000% for the field along the [1-10] direction. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the resistance becomes nonmetallic for this field direction, while it remains metallic for fields along the [110] direction. Such severe and anisotropic destruction of the interlayer coherence by a magnetic field on a simple Fermi surface is ascribable to orbital motion of carriers on the Fermi surface driven by the Lorentz force, but seems to have been largely overlooked until now., Comment: Phys. Correlation between crystal structure and superconducting properties of the BiS2-based superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 was investigated. We have prepared LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 polycrystalline samples with various lattice constants. It was found that the annealing the sample under high pressure generated uniaxial strain along the c axis. Further, the highly-strained sample showed higher superconducting properties. We concluded that the uniaxial strain along the c axis was positively linked with the enhancement of superconductivity in the LaO1-xFxBiS2 system., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Experimental data of the frequency-dependent ac susceptibility for the dipolar spin ice Dy2Ti2O7 has been analyzed by Monte Carlo simulations on the basis of the single-spin-flip Metropolis algorithm. We have directly evaluated the ac susceptibility by applying an ac magnetic field. We found that the simulated behaviors reproduces the experimental behavior of the ac susceptibility in the temperature range from 0.6 to 1.0 K, where dilute magnetic monopoles diffusively move. The conversion factor from simulation time to real time, i.e., the rate of hopping of monopoles to nearest-neighbor sites, strongly depends on temperature., Comment: J. Phys. Soc. Specific heat experiments on a well-characterized polycrystalline sample of the BiS2 based superconductor Bi4O4S3 revealed that it shows a crear specific heat anomaly at about Tc = 4.4 K, consistent with Tc from the resistivity and dc susceptibility. This observation indicates the superconductivity of Bi4O4S3 to be bulk in nature.

We present de Haas-van Alphen and resistivity data on single crystals of the delafossite PdCoO2. At 295 K we measure an in-plane resistivity of 2.6 \mu{\Omega}-cm, making PdCoO2 the most conductive oxide known. The low-temperature in-plane resistivity has an activated rather than the usual T^5 temperature dependence, suggesting a gapping of effective scattering that is consistent with phonon drag. Below 10 K, the transport mean free path is 20 \mum, approximately 10^5 lattice spacings and an astoundingly high value for flux-grown crystals. The low-temperature crystal structure of Fe1.13Te, which exhibits an anomalous two-step magnetic transition, was clarified by the systematic x-ray diffraction measurements. It was found that two-step structural phase transition, tetragonal-orthorhombic-monoclinic, occurred correspondingly to the two-step magnetic transition. The detailed analysis of the profile at 5 K indicated the coexistence of the minor orthorhombic area inside the major monoclinic lattice, which could explain the lower-shift (suppression) of the antiferromagnetic transition temperature in Fe1.13Te and suggest a possibility of superconductivity at the domain boundary., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

High resolution X-ray powder-diffraction experiments on a well-characterized polycrystalline sample of the spin liquid Tb2Ti2O7 reveal that it shows normal positive thermal-expansion above 4 K, which does not agree with the intriguing anomalous negative thermal-expansion due to a magneto-elastic coupling reported for a single crystal sample below 20 K. We also performed a Rietveld profile refinement of a powder-diffraction pattern taken at a room temperature, and confirmed that it is consistent with the fully ordered cubic pyrochlore structure., Comment: 2 pages, 3 figures

Neutron scattering experiments on a polycrystalline sample of the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Tb2Ti2O7, which does not show any magnetic order down to 50 mK, have revealed that it shows condensation behavior below 0.4 K from a thermally fluctuating paramagnetic state to a spin-liquid ground-state with quantum spin fluctuations. Energy spectra change from quasielastic scattering to a continuum with a double-peak structure at energies of 0 and 0.8 K in the spin-liquid state. We experimentally reveal an unconventional anomalous Hall effect (UAHE) in a quasi-two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnet PdCrO2. Using high quality single crystals of PdCrO2, we found that the Hall resistivity deviates from the conventional behavior below T* = 20 K, noticeably lower than TN = 37.5 K, at which Cr^{3+} (S=3/2) spins order in a 120 degree structure. In view of the theoretical expectation that the spin chirality cancels out in the simplest 120 degree spin structure, we discuss required conditions for the emergence of UAHE within Berry-phase mechanisms., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PRL

We have investigated heavy-fermion behavior of the transition-metal oxides ACu3Ru4O12 (A = Na, Ca, La, and their mixtures). It has been known that CaCu3Ru4O12 exhibits Kondo-like behavior attributable to Cu2+ 3d electrons, similar to that of some Ce-based heavy-fermion systems. However, we find striking "suppression" of the mass enhancement in CaCu3Ru4O12, in which the Kondo-like effect is most pronounced. Such decrease of the density of states is reminiscent of the coherent gap formation in Kondo lattice systems. Nevertheless, the behavior can not be interpreted within the conventional Kondo picture with localized moments, because the Cu electrons are apparently itinerant. The present results indicate the importance of the duality of localized and itinerant nature, found also in some other d-electron systems which exhibit the Kondo-like behavior., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Physical Review B

We report physical properties of the conductive magnet PdCrO2 consisting of a layered structure with a triangular lattice of Cr3+ ions (S=3/2). We confirmed an antiferromagnetic transition at TN=37.5K by means of specific heat, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and neutron scattering measurements. The critical behavior in the specific heat persists in an unusually wide temperature range above TN. This fact implies that spin correlations develop even at much higher temperature than TN. The observed sub-linear temperature dependence of the resistivity above TN is also attributed to the short-range correlations among the frustrated spins. While the critical exponent for the magnetization agrees reasonably with the prediction of the relevant model, that for the specific heat evaluated in the wide temperature range differs substantially from the prediction., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We synthesized ACu3Ru4O12 (A = Na, Na0.5Ca0.5, Ca, Ca0.5La0.5, La) and measured their DC magnetization, AC susceptibility, specific heat, and resistivity, in order to investigate the effects of the hetero-valent substitution. A broad peak in the DC magnetization around 200 K was observed only in CaCu3Ru4O12, suggesting the Kondo effect due to localized Cu2+ ions. However, the electronic specific heat coefficients exhibit large values not only for CaCu3Ru4O12 but also for all the other samples. Moreover, the Wilson ratio and the Kadowaki-Woods ratio of our samples are all similar to the values of other heavy-fermion compounds. These results question the Kondo effect as the dominant origin of the mass enhancement, and rather indicate the importance of correlations among itinerant Ru electrons., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, to be published in J.
