Neutron imaging is one of the most powerful tools for nondestructive inspection owing to the unique characteristics of neutron beams, such as high permeability for many heavy metals, high sensitivity for certain light elements, and isotope selectivity owing to a specific nuclear reaction between an isotope and neutrons. In this study, we employed a superconducting detector, current-biased kinetic-inductance detector (CB-KID) for neutron imaging using a pulsed neutron source. We employed the delay-line method, and high spatial resolution imaging with only four reading channels was achieved. We also performed wavelength-resolved neutron imaging by the time-of-flight method for the pulsed neutron source. We obtained the neutron transmission images of a Gd-Al alloy sample, inside which single crystals of GdAl3 were grown, using the delay-line CB-KID. Single crystals were well imaged, in both shapes and distributions, throughout the Al-Gd alloy. We identified Gd nuclei via neutron transmissions that exhibited characteristic suppression above the neutron wavelength of 0.03 nm. In addition, the ^{155}Gd resonance dip, a dip structure of the transmission caused by the nuclear reaction between an isotope and neutrons, was observed even when the number of events was summed over a limited area of 15 X 12 um^2. Background: To compare the effect of obtaining the anteroposterior scout view (APSV) with that of posteroanterior scout view (PASV) on mammary gland dose in pediatric patients. Methods: We used a pediatric anthropomorphic phantom with a 64 detector-row computed tomography (CT) scanner using the APSV or PASV protocol of the chest. A real-time skin dosimeter was placed on the scanner gantry and pasted onto the phantom surfaces of the right and left mammary glands. We compared the real-time skin dosimeter values in the right and left mammary glands between the APSV and PASV protocols at different tube voltages. Results: Compared with APSV, it is possible to reduce the exposure dose by approximately 80% using PASV at different tube voltages (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Obtaining the PASV was helpful in reducing the mammary gland dose by approximately 80% in pediatric patients than that of APSV without deteriorating the image quality of the main scan.

Background: To investigate optimizing the use of different beam shaping filters (viz. small, medium and large) when using different tube voltages during the newborn chest computed tomography (CT) examination. Methods: We used pediatric anthropomorphic phantoms with a 64 detector-row CT scanner while scanning the chest. A real-time skin dosimeter was placed on the scanner gantry and was inserted into the phantom center of the body, the surface of the body back, and the right and left mammary glands. We performed and compared six scan protocols using small, medium, and large beam shaping filters at 80 and 120 kVp protocols. Result: There were no significant differences in the image noise for the chest scan among the different beam shaping filters. By using the large beam shaping filter at 80 kVp, it was possible to reduce the exposure dose by 5% in comparison with the small beam shaping filter, and by 10% in comparison with the medium beam shaping filter. By using the large beam shaping filter at 120 kVp, it was possible to reduce the exposure dose by 15% in comparison with the small beam shaping filter and by 20% in comparison with the medium beam shaping filter (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The large beam shaping filter had the most dose reduction effect during newborn chest CT. However, the exposure dose reduction rate was low when the lower tube voltage was used.

We retrospectively evaluated the visualization of pediatric coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) images by using the 64-detector row CT scanner between the electrocardiogram-gated helical scan and non-electrocardiogram-gated helical scan.From January 2015 to March 2019, 100 children who underwent CT angiography examination were retrospectively enrolled. Group A consisted of 50 patients with electrocardiogram-gated helical scan. Group B consisted of 50 patients with non-electrocardiogram-gated helical scan. All patients were scanned using a 64-detector row CT scanner (LightSpeed VCT), and helical scans were acquired. The CT scanning parameters were 0.4-s rotation, 0.625-mm slice thickness, 0.24 (group A) helical pitch (beam pitch), 1.375 (group B) helical pitch (beam pitch), 80 kVp, and 50-300 mA (noise index 40). A retrospective method was used for electrocardiogram gated. To compare the radiation dose, CT volume dose index (CTDIIn group A, CTDIIn 64-row multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), the visualization rates for the proximal and distal coronary arteries were significantly higher in the electrocardiogram-gated scan, but the exposure dose was several times higher in the pediatric CCTA. For accurate diagnosis in pediatric coronary arteries, electrocardiogram-gated helical scan should be performed.

Neutron polarization analysis (NPA) for small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments using a pulsed neutron source was successfully achieved by applying a 3He spin filter as a spin analyzer for the neutrons scattered from the sample. The cell of the 3He spin filter gives a weak small-angle scattering intensity (background) and covers a sufficient solid angle for performing SANS experiments. The relaxation time of the 3He polarization is sufficient for continuous use for approximately 2 days, thus reaching the typical duration required for a complete set of SANS experiments. Although accurate evaluation of the incoherent neutron scattering, which is predominantly attributable to the extremely large incoherent scattering cross section of hydrogen atoms in samples, is difficult using calculations based on the sample elemental composition, the developed NPA approach with consideration of the influence of multiple neutron scattering enabled reliable decomposition of the SANS intensity distribution into the coherent and incoherent scattering components. To date, NPA has not been well established as a standard technique for SANS experiments at pulsed neutron sources such as the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) and the US Spallation Neutron Source. It is anticipated that this work will contribute significantly to the accurate determination of the coherent neutron scattering component for scatterers in various types of organic sample systems in SANS experiments at J-PARC, particularly for systems involving competition between the coherent and incoherent scattering intensity.

To investigate the pediatric eye lens entrance surface dose for both axial scan modes without an active collimator and helical scan modes with an active collimator on 64 detector-row computed tomography (CT) scanner. We used three pediatric anthropomorphic phantoms with axial and helical scan modes from the superior orbitomeatal line to the crown of the head. We compared the measured dose values of the real-time skin dosemeter at the surfaces of the lens and the image noise at different scan modes. The median measured dose values for the lens of newborn, 1-year-old and the 5-year-old phantom were 31.3, 0.97 and 0.65 mGy, respectively, in the axial scan mode and 0.89, 1.21 and 0.71 mGy, respectively, in the helical scan mode. Compared with helical scans with an active collimators, axial scans can reduce the lens dose by ∼10% during head CT on 64 detector-row CT scanner without deterioration of image noise.

A 3He spin filter is a useful device for polarizing a neutron beam. We are developing the 3He spin filters for users of the material and life science facility of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J‑PARC). An in situ SEOP system with a 3He polarization evaluation system using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method of adiabatic fast passage and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was developed. We conducted an experiment on the neutron beam line BL10 (NOBORU) of J-PARC to confirm the consistency of 3He polarization, estimated using the neutron transmission, NMR and EPR. The polarization of 3He, evaluated using the different methods, was consistent and the evaluation system operated normally for about 6 h.

PURPOSE To compare the radiation dose and image quality using the conventional method for performing the front and side scout view and a new method for performing the side scout view, and then correct the table height at the scan isocenter and perform the front scout view. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed fifty-six children who had underwent computed tomography (CT) examination between June 2014 and August 2018. We divided them into two groups. The conventional method was performed in 3 steps: 1. obtain the front scout view, 2. obtain the side scout view, and 3. main scan. Without table position correction, the new method was performed in 4 steps: 1. obtain the side scout view with table position correction, 2. patient correction at the scan isocenter, 3. obtain the front scout view, and 4. main scan. We used a 64-row CT scanner (LightSpeed VCT; GE Healthcare). Scan parameters were tube voltage 80 kV, automatic tube current modulation, noise index 16, slice thickness 5 mm, rotation time 0.4 s/rot, helical pitch 1.375, and reconstruction kernel standard. We recorded the volume dose index (CTDIvol) and dose length product (DLP) on the CT console and compared the radiation dose in both groups. To evaluate the image quality in both groups, the mean standard deviation of CT number (SD value) was measured within an approximately 5-10 mm2 circular region of interest. We measured the scan length of the pediatric patient and accuracy of pediatric positioning at the CT examination. A grid was displayed on the CT axial image, taken to evaluate the error from the scan isocenter during alignment, and the error between the height of half the body thickness and the scan isocenter was recorded. RESULTS Scan lengths were median (minimum-maximum) values of 16.2 cm (10.8-21.5 cm) and 16.8 cm (11.5-23.0 cm). There were no significant differences in the scan length between both groups (p=0.47). In the group with table position correction, median (minimum-maximum) values for CTDIvol, DLP and SD value were 0.40 mGy (0.3-0.7 mGy), 7.6 mGy･cm (4.4-11.5 mGy･cm), and 24.0 HU (18.3-37.5 HU), respectively. In the group without the table position correction, median (minimum-maximum) values for CTDIvol, DLP and SD value were 0.40 mGy (0.3-0.6 mGy), 7.1 mGy･cm (4.2-13.8 mGy･cm), and 20.3 HU (11.3-28.8 HU), respectively. To improve its diagnosis on contrast-enhanced dynamic CT (CE-DCT) scans, contrast injection protocol must yield stable arterial contrast enhancement. To investigate how the body-water distribution and the body composition, calculated by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), affect aortic and hepatic enhancement on CE-DCT scans. 236 patients with liver cirrhosis underwent CE-DCT before BIA. The CT number (in Hounsfield units, HU) of the abdominal aorta at the celiac artery level on unenhanced scans and during the hepatic arterial phase (HAP) scans was recorded. And, the mean CT number of the hepatic parenchyma of both hepatic lobes at the celiac artery level on unenhanced and portal venous phase (PVP) scans was recorded. We calculated changes in the iodine dose per contrast enhancement (mgI/HU) (IDCE) to evaluate the effect of the patient age and of various constituents of the body composition by performing BIA. The IDCE of the abdominal aorta during HAP was 121.5 ± 32.1 mgI/HU; it was 698.7 ± 211.1 mgI/HU in the hepatic parenchyma during the PVP. Among the parameters used in our BIA, the total body weight (TBW) was the most important factor affecting the IDCE of the liver abdominal aorta on CE-DCT scans acquired during the HAP (r = 0.83). The TBW and the skeletal muscle index most strongly affected the IDCE of the hepatic parenchyma on CE-DCT scans obtained during the PVP (r = 0.69). The TBW had the strongest effect on contrast enhancement. The skeletal muscle index exhibited the strongest correlation with hepatic parenchymal contrast enhancement during the PVP.

This study investigates a current-biased kinetic inductance detector (CB-KID) performance by investigating Bragg-edge spectra from the restricted-area neuron transmission of materials. Iron samples with a size of 5 × 5 ×2 mm3 were used as typical test materials. The ergodic theorem was used to obtain a visible transmission spectrum so that a long-time averaging of a transmission spectrum can alternatively be evaluated using a space average of independently selected area spectra with the same ensemble size. The most visible edges were observed with a limited area sample of 0.43 mm2 using a minimum time bin of 25 μs in a time-of-flight (ToF) spectrum or a wavelength resolution of 0.0007 nm of each neutron pulse at beamline BL10 of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) center. The main Bragg edge of iron as a sum of random 100 ensembles (with an ensemble size of 3.1 × 2.3 μm2) thus obtained has a distinctive signal-to-noise ratio and can be fitted well with the Rietveld Imaging of Transmission Spectra (RITS) program with Miller indices. We consider that our CB-KID system is, in principle, able to analyze the Bragg edge of samples as small as 3.1 × 2.3 μm2.

Wide energy range neutron imaging and spectroscopy in a single experiment without changing the setup is available by a combination of a high-power pulsed neutron source and fast operating neutron detector. The delay-line current-biased kinetic-inductance detector (CB-KID) is a two-dimensional superconducting detector with high spatial and temporal resolutions, and multi-hit tolerance. We demonstrate that the delay-line CB-KID with 10B neutron conversion layer is applicable for neutron imaging and spectroscopy up to the neutron energy of 100 eV. High spatial neutron transmission image for a Sm-Sn mixed metal is successfully constructed below 0.3 eV. Concomitantly, we examine the neutron transmission up to 100 eV and identify observed resonance dips by Sm nuclei.

We are developing a neutron polarizer with polarized $^3$He gas, referred to as a $^3$He spin filter, based on the Spin Exchange Optical Pumping (SEOP) for polarized neutron scattering experiments at Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). A $^3$He gas-filling station was constructed at J-PARC, and several $^3$He cells with long spin relaxation times have been fabricated using the gas-filling station. A laboratory has been prepared in the MLF beam hall for polarizing $^3$He cells, and compact pumping systems with laser powers of 30~W and 110~W, which can be installed onto a neutron beamline, have been developed. A $^3$He polarization of 85% was achieved at a neutron beamline by using the pumping system with the 110~W laser. Recently, the first user experiment utilizing the $^3$He spin filter was conducted, and there have been several more since then. Recently, we have developed a novel dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) apparatus with a magnetic field of 7 T and a sample temperature of 1 K. High proton spin polarizations from &minus, 84% to 76%, for TEMPO doped polystyrene samples, have been demonstrated. This DNP apparatus satisfies the simultaneous requirement for quick and easy sample exchange and high DNP performance. On the iMATERIA (BL20) instrument at J-PARC, the first beam experiment using this DNP apparatus has been performed. For this experiment, the beamline was equipped with a supermirror polarizer. The stray magnetic field due to the superconducting magnet for DNP was also evaluated. The stray magnetic field plays an important role for in maintaining the neutron polarization during the transportation from the polarizer to the sample. The small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) profiles of silica-filled rubber under dynamically polarized conditions are presented. By applying our new analytical approach for SANS coherent scattering intensity, neutron polarization (PN) as a function of neutron wavelength was determined. Consequently, for the neutron wavelength, range from 4 &Aring, to 10 &Aring, |PN| was sufficient for DNP-SANS studies.

The measurement of the ground state hyperfine structure of muonic helium has the potential to improve the precision of the mass of the negative muon by a factor of 50 or more. The mass of the negative muon is very important because it enables us to test the CPT theorem by comparison with positive muon mass. We aim to measure the hyperfine structure of muonic helium with a precision 1000 times higher than previous experiments [1,2] using the highintensity muon beam at J-PARC and have already obtained results better than the current precision in zero-field measurements in a test experiment in March 2021. To further improve the precision, we plan to measure in a high magnetic field and incorporate a technique that can produce highly polarized muonic helium atom [3]. In this paper, we will report on these developments.

Samples were examined using a superconducting (Nb) neutron imaging system employing a delay-line technique which in previous studies was shown to have high spatial resolution. We found excellent correspondence between neutron transmission and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of Gd islands with sizes between 15 and 130 micrometer which were thermally-sprayed onto a Si substrate. Neutron transmission images could be used to identify tiny voids in a thermally-sprayed continuous Gd2O3 film on a Si substrate which could not be seen in SEM images. We also found that neutron transmission images revealed pattern formations, mosaic features and co-existing dendritic phases in Wood's metal samples with constituent elements Bi, Pb, Sn and Cd. These results demonstrate the merits of the current-biased kinetic inductance detector (CB-KID) system for practical studies in materials science. Moreover, we found that operating the detector at a more optimal temperature (7.9 K) appreciably improved the effective detection efficiency when compared to previous studies conducted at 4 K. The current-biased kinetic-inductance detector (CB-KID) is a solid-state superconducting neutron detector with high spatial and temporal resolutions, and multi-hit tolerance. We demonstrate high temperature operation of CB-KID at 7.9 K with the delay-line method. High temperature operation reduces imaging pixel size by suppressing signal propagation velocity. High spatial neutron transmission image for a mixed metal alloy consisting of heavy elements Sm and Sn is successfully constructed. We also examine the capability of element discrimination imaging based on the resonance dip analysis.

To compare the radiation dose and image noise of nonenhanced CT scans performed at 80, 100, and 120 kVp with tube current modulation (TCM) we used anthropomorphic phantoms of newborn, 1‐year‐old, and 5‐year‐old children. The noise index was set at 12. The image noise in the center of the phantoms at the level of the chest and abdomen was measured within a circumscribed region of interest. We measured the doses in individual tissues or organs with radio‐photoluminescence glass dosimeters for each phantom. Various tissues or organs were assigned and the radiation dose was calculated based on the international commission on radiological protection definition. With TCM the respective radiation dose at tube voltages of 80, 100, and 120 was 29.71, 31.60, and 33.79 mGy for the newborn, 32.00, 36.79, and 39.48 mGy for the 1‐year‐old, and 32.78, 38.11, and 40.85 mGy for the 5‐year‐old phantom. There were no significant differences in the radiation dose among the tube voltages and phantoms (P > 0.05). Our comparison of the radiation dose using anthropomorphic phantoms of young children showed that the radiation dose of nonenhanced CT performed at different tube voltages with TCM was not significantly different.

Thrombosed giant aneurysm of the V1 segment of the vertebral artery is rare, and there is controversy regarding the optimal method of treatment in this portion. Here, we report a thrombosed giant aneurysm of the V1 segment of the vertebral artery with a good clinical course with endovascular proximal artery occlusion of the vertebral artery. A 59-year-old woman presented with a large mass in the left side of the neck. Echographic examination revealed a mass measuring 42 × 38 × 48 mm in the left neck. Angiography showed a thrombosed giant aneurysm of the V1 segment of the left vertebral artery. Endovascular proximal artery occlusion of the vertebral artery was performed, and the aneurysm lessened gradually. Although a number of procedures have been developed to treat extracranial vertebral artery aneurysms, endovascular proximal artery occlusion is a good option to treat aneurysms in this portion.

We successfully derived the time-dependent flux of pulsed neutrons using a superconducting Nb-based current-biased kinetic inductance detector (CB-KID) with a 10 B conversion layer at Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. Our CB-KID is a meander line made of a 40-nm-thick Nb thin film with 1 − μ m line width, which is covered with a 150-nm-thick 10 B conversion layer. The detector works at a temperature below 4 K. The evaluated detection efficiency of the CB-KID in this experiment is 0.23 % at the neutron energy of 25.4 meV. The time-dependent flux spectra of pulsed neutrons thus obtained are in good agreement with the results obtained by the Monte Carlo simulations.

We have been developing a 3He neutron spin filter (NSF) using a spin exchange optical pumping (SEOP) technique. The 3He NSF provides a high-energy polarized neutron beam with large beam size. A high-energy polarized neutron beam, which is more difficult to produce with commonly used magnetic supermirror-based polarizers, is an effective probe for magnetic imaging techniques, particularly in the case of strong magnetic fields. Additionally, an in-situ SEOP system enables us to produce a polarized neutron beam with stable polarization, which is big advantage for experiments with long measurement times. In this study, we installed two in-situ SEOP systems as a neutron spin polarizer and analyzer providing a stable high-energy polarized neutron beam over several days.

Large sources of parity violation have been observed in compound nuclear reactions. These enhancements are described by the compound nuclear model, which can be used to describe the angular correlation of $\gamma$-rays produced in $(\rm{n},\gamma)$ reactions in medium-heavy nuclei. It has also been suggested that these same reactions could lead to a similar enhancement in time reversal violating processes. Therefore, we are interested in verifying the compound nuclear model by studying the $(\rm{n},\gamma)$ reaction using polarized neutrons. In this paper, we discuss the installation and characterization of a neutron polarizer used in the $(\rm{n},\gamma)$ measurement with transversely polarized neutrons.

Neutron imaging is one of the key technologies for non-destructive transmission testing. Recent progress in the development of intensive neutron sources allows us to perform energy-resolved neutron imaging with high spatial resolution. Substantial efforts have been devoted to developing a high spatial and temporal resolution neutron imager. We have been developing a neutron imager aiming at conducting high spatial and temporal resolution imaging based on a delay-line neutron detector, called the current-biased kinetic-inductance detector, with a conversion layer $^{10}$B. The detector allowed us to obtain a neutron transmission image with four signal readout lines. Herein, we expanded the sensor active area, and improved the spatial resolution of the detector. We examined the capability of high spatial resolution neutron imaging over the sensor active area of 15 $\times$ 15 mm$^2$ for various samples, including biological and metal ones. We also demonstrated an energy-resolved neutron image in which stainless-steel specimens were discriminating of other specimens with the aid of the Bragg edge transmission., 17 pages, 6 figures

We performed a polarized neutron transmission asymmetry measurement utilizing the 139La(n,γ)140La reaction. This measurement involved the use of a recently developed 3He spin filter mounted on the J-PARC MLF beam line number 4 (BL04). The resulting value of the longitudinal asymmetry AL = (11.7 ± 1.1)% was found to be in good agreement with existing values in the literature suggesting that the method by which we polarize the neutron beam is not a significant source of uncertainty. This preliminary work represents a first step toward future measurements of the angular correlation in (n̅,Υ) reactions necessary in the search for enhanced T-Violation in compound nuclei.

Parity violating effects enhanced by up to 106 times compared to proton-proton scattering have been observed in several neutron capture induced compound nuclei. This enhancement is explained as an interference between an s-wave and a p-wave amplitude (s-p mixing). Theory predicts that this mechanism can also enhance T-violating effects. For estimation of this enhancement in a promising candidate nucleus, we measured the angular distribution of γ-rays in the (n,γ) reaction induced in a 139La target. Experiments were performed at J-PARC, using a germanium detector array at an intense neutron beam. Analysis of the observed angular dependence around the 0.74 eV p-wave resonance allowed us to determine the ratio of the partial p-wave neutron width to the total neutron width in the entrance channel of the compound nucleus. We also report our development of a 3He spin filter needed as an epithermal-neutron polarizer for the T-violation search.

Background and Objective Despite intensive therapy, vasospasm remains a major cause of delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) in worsening patient outcome after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Transcranial Doppler (TCD) and transcranial color-coded duplex sonography (TCCS) are noninvasive modalities that can be used to assess vasospasm. However, high flow velocity does not always reflect DCI. The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of TCD/TCCS in decreasing permanent neurological deficits. Methods We retrospectively enrolled patients with aSAH who were treated within 72 hours after onset. TCCS was performed every day from days 4 to 14. Peak systolic velocity (PSV), mean velocity (MV), and pulsatility index were recorded and compared between DCI and non-DCI patients. In patients with DCI, endovascular therapy was administered to improve vasospasm, which led to a documented change in velocity. Results Of the 73 patients, 7 (9.6%) exhibited DCI. In 5 of the 7 patients, DCI was caused by vasospasm of M2 or the more peripheral middle cerebral artery (MCA), and the PSV and MV of the DCI group were lower than those of the non-DCI group after day 7. Intra-arterial vasodilator therapy (IAVT) was performed for all patients with DCI immediately to increase the flow volume by the next day. Conclusions Increasing flow velocity cannot always reveal vasospasm excluding M1. In patients with vasospasm of M2 or more distal arteries, decreasing flow velocity might be suggestive of DCI. IAVT led to increases in the flow velocity through expansion of the peripheral MCA.

Delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) is a prominent complication after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Although vasospasm of proximal cerebral arteries has been regarded as the main cause of DCI, vasospasm of distal arteries, microthrombosis, impaired autoregulation, cortical spreading depolarization (CSD), and spreading ischemia are thought to be involved in DCI after aSAH. Here, we describe a patient with aSAH in whom CSD and cerebrovascular autoregulation were evaluated using simultaneous electrocorticography and monitoring of the pressure reactivity index (PRx) after surgical clipping of a ruptured posterior communicating artery aneurysm. In this patient, a prolonged duration of CSD and elevation of PRx preceded delayed neurological deficit. Based on this observation, we propose a relationship between these factors and DCI. Assessment of cerebrovascular autoregulation may permit detection of the inverse hemodynamic response to cortical depolarization. Detection of DCI may be achieved through simultaneous monitoring of CSD and PRx in patients with aSAH.

Background The importance of acute-phase brain temperature management is widely accepted for prevention of exacerbation of brain damage by a high body temperature. Methods In this study, we investigated the influence of body temperature in the early postoperative period on the outcomes of 62 patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage who were admitted to our department. Body temperature was measured from day 4 to day 14 after onset. The patients were divided into those treated with surgical clipping (clip group) and coil embolization (coil group), those graded I-III (mild) and IV-V (severe) based on the Hunt & Hess classification on admission, those with and without development of delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), and those with favorable and poor outcomes. Body temperatures throughout the hospital stay were compared in each group. Results There was no significant difference in body temperature between the clip and coil groups or between the mild and severe groups, but body temperature was significantly higher in patients with DCI compared to those without DCI, and in patients with a poor outcome compared to those with a favorable outcome. Conclusions Fever in the early postoperative period of subarachnoid hemorrhage is associated with development of DCI and a poor outcome.

We previously succeeded in constructing and demonstrating the capability of a neutron imaging system based on a superconducting current-biased kinetic inductance detector (CB-KID). In the present work, we systematically studied the characteristics of the superconducting neutron detector to improve the spatial resolution and detection efficiency. We found that the number of neutron detection events with CB-KID remarkably increased when the detector temperature increased from 4 K to the critical temperature T c. We observed systematic changes of neutron signals as a function of the detector temperature from 4 K to T c. We evaluated the detection efficiency of the CB-KID detector, and compared with PHITS Monte Carlo simulations, which modeled the sequential physical processes for the 10B(n,α)7Li reaction, the transport dynamics, and the energy deposition by particles including neutrons, 4He particles, 7Li particles, photons, and electrons.

We demonstrate the development of an energy resolved neutron transmission imaging system via a solid-state superconducting detector, called current-biased kinetic-inductance detector (CB-KID). CB-KIDs comprise X and Y superconducting Nb meanderlines with Nb ground plane and a 10B conversion layer, which converts a neutron to two charged particles. High-energy charged particles are able to create quasi-particle hot spots simultaneously in the X and Y meander lines, and thus, the local Cooper pair density in meander lines is reduced temporary. When DC-bias currents are fed into the meander lines, double pairs of voltage pulses are generated at the hot spots and propagate toward both ends of the meander lines as electromagnetic waves. The position of the original hot spot is determined by a difference in arrival times of the two pulses at the two ends for X and Y meander lines, independently. This is so-called the delay-line method, and allows us to reconstruct the two-dimensional neutron transmission image of a test sample with four signal readout lines. We examined the capability of high spatial and energy (wavelength) resolved neutron transmission imaging over the sensor active area of 15 ×15 mm2 for various samples, including biological and metal ones. We also demonstrated the capability for the Bragg edge transmission and an energy-resolved neutron image in which stainless-steel specimens were discriminating from other specimens.
