We will present a new instrument PLATOSpec which will be installed at E152 telescope at La Silla Observatory, Chile in 2023. PLATOSpec will be an echelle spectrograph with resolving power of 70000 capable of monitoring wavelength range from 380 to 680 nm with an expected accuracy in radial velocities around 3 m/s. PLATOSpec will have a blue sensitive chip, therefore, we will be able to provide a valuable information about the stellar activity. Main aims of PLATOSpec will be the ground based follow-up of currently TESS and later PLATO missions planetary candidates. We will be able to contribute mainly to detection and characterization of hot Jupiters and to discrimination of false positives and to determination of stellar parameters.

We present ALMA [CII] line and far-infrared (FIR) continuum observations of seven z > 6 low-luminosity quasars (M1450 > −25 mag) discovered by our on-going Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey. The [CII] line was detected in all targets with luminosities of ∼(2−10) × 108 L⊙, about one order of magnitude smaller than optically luminous quasars. Also found was a wide scatter of FIR continuum luminosity, ranging from LFIR < 1011L⊙ to ∼2 × 1012L⊙. With the [CII]-based dynamical mass, we suggest that a significant fraction of low-luminosity quasars are located on or even below the local Magorrian relation, particularly at the massive end of the galaxy mass distribution. This is a clear contrast to the previous finding that luminous quasars tend to have overmassive black holes relative to the relation. Our result is expected to show a less-biased nature of the early co-evolution of black holes and their host galaxies.

We report the results of a multiyear spectroscopic and photometric monitoring campaign of two luminous quasars, PG 0923+201 and PG 1001+291, both located at the high-luminosity end of the broad-line region (BLR) size-luminosity relation with optical luminosities above 1045 erg s-1. PG 0923+201 is monitored for the first time, while PG 1001+291 was previously monitored but our campaign has a much longer temporal baseline. We detect time lags of variations of the broad Hβ, Hγ, and Fe ii lines with respect to those of the 5100 Å continuum. The velocity-resolved delay map of Hβ in PG 0923+201 indicates a complicated structure with a mix of Keplerian disk-like motion and outflow, and the map of Hβ in PG 1001+291 shows a signature of Keplerian disk-like motion. Assuming a virial factor of f BLR = 1 and FWHM line widths, we measure the black hole mass to be for PG 0923+201 and for PG 1001+291. Their respective accretion rates are estimated to be and, indicating that PG 0923+201 is a sub-Eddington accretor and PG 1001+291 is a super-Eddington accretor. While the Hβ time lag of PG 0923+201 agrees with the size-luminosity relation, the time lag of PG 1001+291 shows a significant deviation, confirming that in high-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the BLR size depends on both luminosity and Eddington ratio. Black hole mass estimates from single-AGN spectra will be overestimated at high luminosities and redshifts if this effect is not taken into account. © 2021. The American Astronomical Society. Izumi, T., et al., We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array [C ii] 158 μm line and far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission observations toward HSC J120505.09-000027.9 (J1205-0000) at z = 6.72 with a beam size of ∼0.″8 × 0.″5 (or 4.1 kpc × 2.6 kpc), the most distant red quasar known to date. Red quasars are modestly reddened by dust and are thought to be in rapid transition from an obscured starburst to an unobscured normal quasar, driven by powerful active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback that blows out a cocoon of interstellar medium. The FIR continuum of J1205-0000 is bright, with an estimated luminosity of L FIR ∼ 3 × 1012 L o˙. The [C ii] line emission is extended on scales of r ∼ 5 kpc, greater than that of the FIR continuum. The line profiles at the extended regions are complex and broad (FWHM ∼ 630-780 km s-1). Although it is not practical to identify the nature of this extended structure, possible explanations include (i) companion/merging galaxies and (ii) massive AGN-driven outflows. For the case of (i), the companions are modestly star-forming (∼10 M o˙ yr-1) but are not detected by our Subaru optical observations (y AB,5σ = 24.4 mag). For the case of (ii), our lower limit to the cold neutral outflow rate is ∼100 M o˙ yr-1. We present the spectroscopic discovery of 69 quasars at 5.8 < z < 7.0, drawn from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) imaging survey data. This is the 16th publication from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, and completes identification of all but the faintest candidates (i.e., i-band dropouts with zAB < 24 and y-band detections, and z-band dropouts with yAB < 24) with Bayesian quasar probability Pq > 0.1 in the HSC-SSP third public data release (PDR3). The sample reported here also includes three quasars with Pq < 0.1 at z ~ 6.6, which we selected in an effort to completely cover the reddest point sources with simple color cuts. The number of high-z quasars discovered in SHELLQs has now grown to 162, including 23 type-II quasar candidates. This paper also presents identification of seven galaxies at 5.6 < z < 6.7, an [O III] emitter at z = 0.954, and 31 Galactic cool stars and brown dwarfs. High-z quasars and galaxies comprise 75 % and 16 % respectively of all the spectroscopic SHELLQs objects that pass our latest selection algorithm with the PDR3 photometry. That is, a total of 91 % of the objects lie at z > 5.6. This demonstrates that the algorithm has very high efficiency, even though we are probing an unprecedentedly low-luminosity population down to M1450 ~ -21 mag., Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

We present a detailed investigation of millimeter-wave line emitters ALMA J010748.3-173028 (ALMA-J0107a) and ALMA J010747.0-173010 (ALMA-J0107b), which were serendipitously uncovered in the background of the nearby galaxy VV114 with spectral scan observations at $\lambda$ = 2 - 3 mm. Via Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) detection of CO(4-3), CO(3-2), and [CI](1-0) lines for both sources, their spectroscopic redshifts are unambiguously determined to be $z= 2.4666\pm0.0002$ and $z=2.3100\pm0.0002$, respectively. We obtain the apparent molecular gas masses $M_{\rm gas}$ of these two line emitters from [CI] line fluxes as $(11.2 \pm 3.1) \times 10^{10} M_\odot$ and $(4.2 \pm 1.2) \times 10^{10} M_\odot$, respectively. The observed CO(4-3) velocity field of ALMA-J0107a exhibits a clear velocity gradient across the CO disk, and we find that ALMA-J0107a is characterized by an inclined rotating disk with a significant turbulence, that is, a deprojected maximum rotation velocity to velocity dispersion ratio $v_{\rm max}/\sigma_{v}$ of $1.3 \pm 0.3$. We find that the dynamical mass of ALMA-J0107a within the CO-emitting disk computed from the derived kinetic parameters, $(1.1 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{10}\ M_\odot$, is an order of magnitude smaller than the molecular gas mass derived from dust continuum emission, $(3.2\pm1.6)\times10^{11}\ M_{\odot}$. We suggest this source is magnified by a gravitational lens with a magnification of $\mu \gtrsim10$, which is consistent with the measured offset from the empirical correlation between CO-line luminosity and width., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Objective of this research is high spatial resolution acquisition of measurement image in telescopic visualization measurement. Telescopic visualization measurements cannot be performed under strong atmospheric disturbances because of the spatial resolution degraded. So that, an adaptive optics system combining a deformable mirror and a wavefront sensor is used to reduce the influence of atmospheric disturbance. The visualization measurement uses a background-oriented schlieren method that has attracted attention for use in open-air. In this paper, the phase plate was used to conduct the experiment indoors. The phase plate was designed and manufactured from the result of measuring the atmospheric disturbance. In addition, the phase plate was combined into the adaptive optics system and experiments were performed.

The University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory Project is to construct a 6.5 m infrared-optimized telescope at the summit of Co. Chajnantor (5640 m altitude) in northern Chile. The telescope optics uses a Ritchey-Chretien type layout, with an under-sized secondary mirror to reduce stray light caused by thermal emission from the telescope structure. The primary mirror is a F/1.25 lightweight borosilicate glass (Ohara E6) mirror with honeycomb structure, which is developed by Steward Observatory Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab. The telescope has two Nasmyth foci and two folded-Cassegrain foci, which can be switched by rotating a tertiary mirror. The final focal ratio is 12.2 with a field of view of 25 arcmin in diameter. The telescope mount is a tripod-disk alt-azimuth mount. Both the azimuth and elevation axes are supported by and run on hydrostatic bearings, and they are driven by friction drives with servo motors, which are controlled by the telescope control system. It also controls the hexapod mount of the secondary mirror and the pneumatic actuators of the primary mirror support to keep good image quality during the observation. An off-axis Shack-Hartmann sensor installed in each focus measures the wavefront aberration of the telescope optics, then the misalignment between the secondary and primary mirrors is corrected by adjusting the hexapod mount while other aberrations are corrected by the deformation of the primary mirror. The force distribution of the actuators for correction will be calculated by fitting the wave-front errors with a series of bending modes of the primary mirror.

There are many astronomical, interferometric and space situational awareness applications for single and multiple 2-meter aperture optical and infrared mobile telescopes that are low cost, can be easily transported and quickly deployed at a variety of sites. A design concept is presented for a trailermounted 2-meter telescope with a novel micro-enclosure that allows the telescope to be moved and deployed quickly for observations. The telescope is protected from adverse weather using a weatherproof telescope tube instead of a conventional dome or enclosure. It has Cassegrain, Nasmyth and coude foci suitable for astronomical, interferometric, space situational awareness, and laser communications applications, and is designed for replication at low cost. An initial implementation is being developed to explore the performance of such a telescope using re-purposed primary and secondary mirrors and other components from the MAGNUM telescope.

The Simultaneous-color Wide-field Infrared Multi-object Spectrograph (SWIMS) is one of the 1st generation facility instruments for the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) 6.5 m telescope currently being constructed at the summit of Cerro Chajnantor (5,640 m altitude) in northern Chile. SWIMS has two optical arms, the blue arm covering 0.9–1.4 µm and the red 1.4–2.5 µm, by inserting a dichroic mirror into the collimated beam, and thus is capable of taking images in two filter-bands simultaneously in imaging mode, or whole nearinfrared (0.9–2.5 µm) low-to-medium resolution multi-object spectra in spectroscopy (MOS) mode, both with a single exposure. SWIMS was carried into Subaru Telescope in 2017 for performance evaluation prior to completion of the construction of the 6.5 m telescope, and successfully saw the imaging first light in May 2018 and MOS first light in Jan 2019. After three engineering runs including the first light observations, SWIMS has been accepted as a new PI instrument for Subaru Telescope from the semester S21A until S22B. In this paper, we report on details of on-sky performance of the instrument evaluated during the engineering observations for a total of 7.5 nights.

Since the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) is located in extremely high altitude (5,640 m.a.s.l.), safety management is one of the most important issues for the project. We have developed safety management program for work at the site in order to prevent medical illness for humans. In this program all staff have to take medical examinations such as Electrocardiogram and Hipobaria before their work starts. The results are reviewed by medical doctor. Only authorized staff can be permitted to work at the site. During stay in site, all staff need to always use oxygen supply because there is only half of the oxygen at the site. It is also important to understand physical workload at the site. Our safety staff reviews it and determines necessary resting time for each worker, e.g. great load works need to work 50 minutes and rest 10 minutes. In addition to low air pressure, very low temperature, extremely high UV radiation, and extremely dry atmosphere should be concerned. Our program requests all staff to use winter clothes, sunblock and UV protection sunglasses and a lot of potable water consumption. Keep communication is also very important to secure the safety. Normal telephone communication is not available as well as internet connectivity. We have established satellite communication as well as UHF internal communication for general works and safety coordination with other observatories in Atacama area.

The telescope of the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory has a primary mirror with a diameter in 6.5m. In order to fabricate the reflecting film initially on the mirror surface and to maintain its optical performance over a long period, a mirror{coating facility will be installed in operation building beside enclosure of the telescope at the summit of Co. Chajnantor (5,640m). The facility consists of mirror coating chamber, cleaning unit for stripping off the old film and clean-up the mirror, and a cart with a lifter for handling the primary mirror cell. Almost all equipment, including the main chamber, was completed by early 2020 and engaged as a mirror coating facility. In order to optimize the coating parameters, comprehensive performance tests were carried out (without primary mirror cell which plays a role of a part of chamber). The evaluation items are how long it takes to reach the target vacuum level and parameters of the current, voltage, and application time during ion bombardment and aluminization. Through iterating test, we were able to obtain each parameter that ultimately met the requirements of the TAO telescope mirror.

One of remarkable features of the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) is an altitude of the site (5,640 m.a.s.l.) While this provides us an excellent condition for astronomical observations, the site development is attended with difficulty due to the hard conditions such as low pressure, low temperature, and limited access. Site preparation for the TAO 6.5 m telescope started in Apr. 2018. Firstly, we have constructed an access road from Pampa la bola plateau (~ 5,000 m.a.s.l) to the summit. It has a width of < 6.5 meter for transportation of telescope parts including the 6.5meter mirror. In order to prevent collapse, angle of side slope is carefully determined based on ground condition and frozen soils. All workers always use oxygen during their work as a measure against hypobaropathy. Since the site temperature in night is lower than 0 degree even in the summer season, it is difficult to ensure quality of foundation concrete if we cast it in-situ. We use pre-cast concrete for the foundation of the telescope, the enclosure, and the support building. The biggest part is the telescope foundation. It has a weight of 600 ton. Considering the transportation to the summit, it is divided into 43 parts and unified at the summit. This is a new trial to make a massive foundation for a large telescope with pre-cast concrete.

The Near-Infrared Cross-dispersed Echelle spectrograph (NICE) is a first light instrument for the TAO 6.5 m telescope. The instrument covers a wavelength range of 0.9 to 2.4 µm and has a resolving power of λ/∆λ ~2,600. NICE was first used on the 1.5 m infrared telescope at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan from 2001 to 2005 and on the 1.6 m Pirka telescope in Japan from 2009 to 2018. We are now upgrading the cryogenics and computer system for the installation of NICE on the TAO telescope. Here we report on the current status and future schedules of instrumentation updates, control system, and modified specifications of NICE for its transfer to the TAO 6.5 m telescope.

The Mid-Infrared Multi-field Imager for gaZing at the UnKnown Universe (MIMIZUKU) is developed as the first-generation mid-infrared instrument for the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) 6.5-m telescope. MIMIZUKU performs medium-band imaging and low-resolution spectroscopy in 2-38 microns and enables highest-spatial-resolution observations in the long-wavelength mid-infrared beyond 25 microns. Ice rich permafrost is observed at Chajnantor volcano (5,640m a.s.l.) on the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) site. Presence or absence of the permafrost is considered to be requested quite different engineering skills for their infrastructures. Lower altitude boundary is reported to be above 5,079m a.s.l. and maximum active (thawing) layer is 14cm. Minimal seasonal temperature variation, small active layer thickness as the consequences of low numbers of thawing and freezing degree days. Diurnal amplitude results in freeze-thaw cycles only near the surface. Severe frost shattering occurs near the ground surface, producing a dusty, fine-material horizon called a hyper-cryogenic layer. The importance of the snow-covered season for providing great protection for surface energy penetration. Many permafrost hazards are expecting in this construction site such as frost heaving, subsiding, mass movements, erosion, chemical weathering, frost shattering, embankment instability, and

Institute of Astronomy, Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo is promoting the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory Project, which is to construct an infrared-optimized 6.5m telescope at the summit of Co. Chajnantor (5640m altitude) in northern Chile. The high altitude and dry climate (PWV-0.5mm) realize transparent atmosphere in the infrared wavelength. The project is now approaching the final phase of the construction. Production of major components are almost completed: Production and preassembly test of a telescope mount and dome enclosure have been completed in Japan, and they are being transported to Chile. Three mirrors, the 6.5m primary, 0.9m secondary, and 1.1m-0.75m tertiary mirrors and their support systems have been all completed and tested in the USA. An aluminizing chamber have been fabricated in China, and its tests have been carried out in Japan. Development of two facility instruments, SWIMS and MIMIZUKU, are also completed. They were transported to the Subaru telescope, successfully saw the first light in 2018, and are confirmed to have the performance as designed. On-site construction work at the summit is now underway. Expansion of a summit access road from the ALMA concession was completed in 2019. Installation of foundation will follow, and then erection of the dome enclosure and a control building. The construction works are delayed by COVID-19, and we expect to complete the dome enclosure by Q3 of 2021. The telescope will be installed inside the dome and see the engineering first light by early 2022.

arXiv:2007.08685v2, We present the first discovery of dust-reddened quasars (red quasars) in the high-z universe (z > 5.6). This is a result from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, which is based on the sensitive multi-band optical imaging data produced by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. We identified four red quasar candidates from the 93 spectroscopically confirmed high-z quasars in the SHELLQs sample, based on detections in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data at 3.4 and 4.6 μm (rest-frame ∼5000–6500 Å). The amount of dust reddening was estimated with spectral energy distribution (SED) fits over optical and mid-infrared wavelengths. Two of the four candidates were found to be red quasars with dust reddening of E(B − V) > 0.1. The remaining SHELLQs quasars without individual WISE detections are significantly fainter in the WISE bands and bluer than the red quasars, although we did detect them in the W1 band in a stacked image. We also conducted the same SED fits for high-z optically-luminous quasars, but no red quasar was found. This demonstrates the power of Subaru HSC to discover high-z red quasars, which are fainter than the limiting magnitudes of past surveys in the rest-frame ultraviolet, due to dust extinction., We are grateful to the referee for his/her useful comments to improve this paper. Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are key for understanding the coevolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes (SMBHs). AGN activity is thought to affect the properties of their host galaxies, via a process called "AGN feedback", which drives the co-evolution. From a parent sample of 1151 z < 1 type-1 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar catalog, we detected host galaxies of 862 of them in the high-quality grizy images of the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. The unprecedented combination of the survey area and depth allows us to perform a statistical analysis of the quasar host galaxies, with small sample variance. We fit the radial image profile of each quasar as a linear combination of the point spread function and the Sersic function, decomposing the images into the quasar nucleus and the host galaxy components. We found that the host galaxies are massive, with stellar mass Mstar > 10^(10) Msun, and are mainly located on the green valley. This trend is consistent with a scenario in which star formation of the host galaxies is suppressed by AGN feedback, that is, AGN activity may be responsible for the transition of these galaxies from the blue cloud to the red sequence. We also investigated the SMBH mass to stellar mass relation of the z < 1 quasars, and found a consistent slope with the local relation, while the SMBHs may be slightly undermassive. The dust reverberation mapping is one of powerful methods to investigate the structure of the dusty tori in AGNs, and it has been performed on more than a hundred type 1 AGNs. However, no clear results have been reported on type 2 AGNs because their strong optical-UV extinction completely hides their accretion disc emission. Here we focus on an X-ray-bright type 2 AGN, NGC 2110, and utilize 2-20 keV X-ray variation monitored by MAXI to trace disc emission, instead of optical-UV variation. Comparing it with light curves in the WISE infrared (IR) W1 band ($\lambda = 3.4$ $\mu$m) and W2 band ($\lambda = 4.6$ $\mu$m) with cross-correlation analyses, we found candidates of the dust reverberation time lag at $\sim60$ days, $\sim130$ days, and $\sim1250$ days between the X-ray flux variation and those of the IR bands. By examining the best-fitting X-ray and IR light curves with the derived time lags, we found that the time lag of $\sim130$ days is most favoured. With this time lag, the relation between the time lag and luminosity of NGC 2110 is consistent with those in type 1 AGNs, suggesting that the dust reverberation in NGC 2110 mainly originates in hot dust in the torus innermost region, the same as in type 1 AGNs. We present ALMA [CII] line and far-infrared (FIR) continuum observations of three $z > 6$ low-luminosity quasars ($M_{\rm 1450} > -25$) discovered by our Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. The [CII] line was detected in all three targets with luminosities of $(2.4 - 9.5) \times 10^8~L_\odot$, about one order of magnitude smaller than optically luminous ($M_{\rm 1450} \lesssim -25$) quasars. The FIR continuum luminosities range from $< 9 \times 10^{10}~L_\odot$ (3$��$ limit) to $\sim 2 \times 10^{12}~L_\odot$, indicating a wide range in star formation rates in these galaxies. Most of the HSC quasars studied thus far show [CII]/FIR luminosity ratios similar to local star-forming galaxies. Using the [CII]-based dynamical mass ($M_{\rm dyn}$) as a surrogate for bulge stellar mass ($M_{\rm bulge}$), we find that a significant fraction of low-luminosity quasars are located on or even below the local $M_{\rm BH} - M_{\rm bulge}$ relation, particularly at the massive end of the galaxy mass distribution. In contrast, previous studies of optically luminous quasars have found that black holes are overmassive relative to the local relation. Given the low luminosities of our targets, we are exploring the nature of the early co-evolution of supermassive black holes and their hosts in a less biased way. Almost all of the quasars presented in this work are growing their black hole mass at much higher pace at $z \sim 6$ than the parallel growth model, in which supermassive black holes and their hosts grow simultaneously to match the local $M_{\rm BH} - M_{\rm bulge}$ relation at all redshifts. As the low-luminosity quasars appear to realize the local co-evolutionary relation even at $z \sim 6$, they should have experienced vigorous starbursts prior to the currently observed quasar phase to catch up with the relation., 19 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. We present an analysis of the ALMA long baseline science verification data of the gravitational lens system SDP.81. We fit the positions of the brightest clumps at redshift z=3.042 and a possible AGN component of the lensing galaxy at redshift z=0.2999 in the band 7 continuum image using a canonical lens model, a singular isothermal ellipsoid plus an external shear. Then, we measure the ratio of fluxes in some apertures at the source plane where the lensed images are inversely mapped. We find that the aperture flux ratios of band 7 continuum image are perturbed by 10-20 percent with a significance at 2 ~ 3 sigma level. Moreover, we measure the astrometric shifts of multiply lensed images near the caustic using the CO(8-7) line. Using a lens model best-fitted to the band 7 continuum image, we reconstruct the source image of the CO(8-7) line by taking linear combination of inverted quadruply lensed images. At the 50th channel (rest-frame velocity 28.6 km/s) of the CO(8-7) line, we find an imprint of astrometric shifts of the order of 0.01 arcsec in the source image. Based on a semi-analytic calculation, we find that the observed anomalous flux ratios and the astrometric shifts can be explained by intergalactic dark structures in the line of sight. A compensated homogeneous spherical clump with a mean surface mass density of the order of 10^8 solar mass h^-1 arcsec^-2 can explain the observed anomaly and astrometric shifts simultaneously., 17 pages, 16 figures, and 6 tables, version accepted in MNRAS; some minor changes have been made

We report our high-resolution (0.03 arcsec to 0.07 arcsec) ALMA imaging of the quadruply lensed radio-loud quasar MG\,J0414+0534 at redshift $z=2.639$ in the continuum and the broad CO(11-10) line at $\sim 340\,$GHz. With the help of strong lensing magnification and ALMA's high-resolution, we succeeded in resolving the jet/dust and CO gas in the quasar host galaxy both extending up to $\sim 1\,$kpc, with a resolution of $\sim 50\,$pc for the first time. Both the continuum emission and the CO(11-10) line have a similar bimodal structure aligned with the quasar jets ($\sim 200\,$pc) observed by Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at $5\,$GHz and $8.4\,$GHz. The CO gas in the vicinity of both the eastern and western jet components at the location of $\sim 80\,$pc from the quasar core are moving at high velocities up to $\pm 600\,$$\textrm{km}\,\textrm{s}^{-1}$ relative to the core. The observed features show clear evidence of strong interaction between the jets and interstellar medium (ISM). High temperature and high density environments in the ISM of the quasar host galaxy, as suggested from CO line ratios, also support this result. The small scale of the jets, the jet-ISM interaction, and the continuum spectral energy distribution of this source indicate that we are watching the infancy stage of quasar radio activity., 7 pages, 4 figures, typos corrected

We present new measurements of the quasar luminosity function (LF) at $z \sim 6$, over an unprecedentedly wide range of the rest-frame ultraviolet luminosity $M_{1450}$ from $-30$ to $-22$ mag. This is the fifth in a series of publications from the Subaru High-$z$ Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, which exploits the deep multi-band imaging data produced by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. The LF was calculated with a complete sample of 110 quasars at $5.7 \le z \le 6.5$, which includes 48 SHELLQs quasars discovered over 650 deg$^2$, and 63 brighter quasars discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Canada-France-Hawaii Quasar Survey (including one overlapping object). This is the largest sample of $z \sim 6$ quasars with a well-defined selection function constructed to date, and has allowed us to detect significant flattening of the LF at its faint end. A double power-law function fit to the sample yields a faint-end slope $\alpha = -1.23^{+0.44}_{-0.34}$, a bright-end slope $\beta = -2.73^{+0.23}_{-0.31}$, a break magnitude $M_{1450}^* = -24.90^{+0.75}_{-0.90}$, and a characteristic space density $\Phi^* = 10.9^{+10.0}_{-6.8}$ Gpc$^{-3}$ mag$^{-1}$. Integrating this best-fit model over the range $-18 < M_{1450} < -30$ mag, quasars emit ionizing photons at the rate of $\dot{n}_{\rm ion} = 10^{48.8 \pm 0.1}$ s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$ at $z = 6.0$. This is less than 10 % of the critical rate necessary to keep the intergalactic medium ionized, which indicates that quasars are not a major contributor to cosmic reionization., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Mid-Infrared Multi-field Imager for gaZing at the UnKnown Universe (MIMIZUKU) is a mid-infrared camera and spectrograph developed as a first-generation instrument on the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) 6.5-m telescope. MIMIZUKU covers a wide wavelength range from 2 to 38 μm and has a unique optical device called Field Stacker which realizes accurate calibration of variable atmospheric transmittance with a few percent accuracy. By utilizing these capabilities, MIMIZUKU realizes mid-infrared long-term monitoring, which has not been challenged well. MIMIZUKU has three optical channels, called NIR, MIR-S, and MIR-L, to realize the wide wavelength coverage. The MIR-S channel, which covers 6.8–26 μm, has been completed by now. We are planning to perform engineering observations with this channel at the Subaru telescope before the completion of the TAO 6.5-m telescope. In this paper, we report the results of the laboratory tests to evaluate the optical and detector performances of the MIR-S channel. As a result, we confirmed a pixel scale of 0.12 arcsec/pix and a vignetting- free field of view of 2./0 1./8. The instrument throughputs for imaging modes are measured to be 20–30%. Those for N - and Q -band spectroscopy modes are 17 and 5%, respectively. As for the detector performance, we derived the quantum efficiency to be 40–50% in the mid-infrared wavelength region and measured the readout noise to be 3000–6000 electrons, which are larger than the spec value. It was found that this large readout noise degrades the sensitivity of MIMIZUKU by a factor of two.

We present our ALMA Cycle 4 measurements of the [CII] emission line and the underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission from four optically low-luminosity ($M_{\rm 1450} > -25$) quasars at $z \gtrsim 6$ discovered by the Subaru Hyper Suprime Cam (HSC) survey. The [CII] line and FIR continuum luminosities lie in the ranges $L_{\rm [CII]} = (3.8-10.2) \times 10^8~L_\odot$ and $L_{\rm FIR} = (1.2-2.0) \times 10^{11}~L_\odot$, which are at least one order of magnitude smaller than those of optically-luminous quasars at $z \gtrsim 6$. We estimate the star formation rates (SFR) of our targets as $\simeq 23-40~M_\odot ~{\rm yr}^{-1}$. Their line and continuum-emitting regions are marginally resolved, and found to be comparable in size to those of optically luminous quasars, indicating that their SFR or likely gas mass surface densities (key controlling parameter of mass accretion) are accordingly different. The $L_{\rm [CII]}/L_{\rm FIR}$ ratios of the hosts, $\simeq (2.2-8.7) \times 10^{-3}$, are fully consistent with local star-forming galaxies. Using the [CII] dynamics, we derived their dynamical masses within a radius of 1.5-2.5 kpc as $\simeq (1.4-8.2) \times 10^{10}~M_\odot$. By interpreting these masses as stellar ones, we suggest that these faint quasar hosts are on or even below the star-forming main sequence at $z \sim 6$, i.e., they appear to be transforming into quiescent galaxies. This is in contrast to the optically luminous quasars at those redshifts, which show starburst-like properties. Finally, we find that the ratios of black hole mass to host galaxy dynamical mass of the most of low-luminosity quasars including the HSC ones are consistent with the local value. The mass ratios of the HSC quasars can be reproduced by a semi-analytical model that assumes merger-induced black hole-host galaxy evolution., 20 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. The formal division of the distance indicators into primary and secondary leads to difficulties in description of methods which can actually be used in two ways: with, and without the support of the other methods for scaling. Thus instead of concentrating on the scaling requirement we concentrate on all methods of distance determination to extragalactic sources which are designated, at least formally, to use for individual sources. Among those, the Supernovae Ia is clearly the leader due to its enormous success in determination of the expansion rate of the Universe. However, new methods are rapidly developing, and there is also a progress in more traditional methods. We give a general overview of the methods but we mostly concentrate on the most recent developments in each field, and future expectations., Space Science Rewiev (in press)

In Yoshii et al. (2014), we described a new method for measuring extragalactic distances based on dust reverberation in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and we validated our new method with Cepheid variable stars. In this paper, we validate our new method with Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) which occurred in two of the AGN host galaxies during our AGN monitoring program: SN 2004bd in NGC 3786 and SN 2008ec in NGC 7469. Their multicolor light curves were observed and analyzed using two widely accepted methods for measuring SN distances, and the distance moduli derived are $\mu=33.47\pm 0.15$ for SN 2004bd and $33.83\pm 0.07$ for SN 2008ec. These results are used to obtain independently the distance measurement calibration factor, $g$. The $g$ value obtained from the SN Ia discussed in this paper is $g_{\rm SN} = 10.61\pm 0.50$ which matches, within the range of 1$\sigma$ uncertainty, $g_{\rm DUST} = 10.60$, previously calculated ab initio in Yoshii et al. (2014). Having validated our new method for measuring extragalactic distances, we use our new method to calibrate reverberation distances derived from variations of H$\beta$ emission in the AGN broad line region (BLR), extending the Hubble diagram to $z\approx 0.3$ where distinguishing between cosmologies is becoming possible., Comment: Astrophysical Journal Letters accepted

We present spectroscopic identification of 32 new quasars and luminous galaxies discovered at 5.7 < z < 6.8. This is the second in a series of papers presenting the results of the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, which exploits the deep multi-band imaging data produced by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. The photometric candidates were selected by a Bayesian probabilistic algorithm, and then observed with spectrographs on the Gran Telescopio Canarias and the Subaru Telescope. Combined with the sample presented in the previous paper, we have now identified 64 HSC sources over about 430 deg2, which include 33 high-z quasars, 14 high-z luminous galaxies, 2 [O III] emitters at z ~ 0.8, and 15 Galactic brown dwarfs. The new quasars have considerably lower luminosity (M1450 ~ -25 to -22 mag) than most of the previously known high-z quasars. Several of these quasars have luminous (> 10^(43) erg/s) and narrow (< 500 km/s) Ly alpha lines, and also a possible mini broad absorption line system of N V 1240 in the composite spectrum, which clearly separate them from typical quasars. On the other hand, the high-z galaxies have extremely high luminosity (M1450 ~ -24 to -22 mag) compared to other galaxies found at similar redshift. With the discovery of these new classes of objects, we are opening up new parameter spaces in the high-z Universe. We report the $4 \, \sigma$ detection of a faint object with a flux of ~ 0.3 mJy, in the vicinity of the quadruply lensed QSO MG0414+0534 using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter array (ALMA) Band 7. The object is most probably a dusty dark dwarf galaxy, which has not been detected in either the optical, near-infrared (NIR) or radio (cm) bands. An anomaly in the flux ratio of the lensed images observed in Band 7 and the mid-infrared (MIR) band and the reddening of the QSO light color can be simultaneously explained if we consider the object as a lensing substructure with an ellipticity ~ 0.7 at a redshift of $0.5 \lesssim z \lesssim 1$. Using the best-fit lens models with three lenses, we find that the dark matter plus baryon mass associated with the object is $\sim 10^9\, M_{\odot}$, the dust mass is $\sim 10^7\,M_{\odot}$ and the linear size is $\gtrsim 5\,$kpc. Thus our findings suggest that the object is a dusty dark dwarf galaxy. We report the discovery of 28 quasars and 7 luminous galaxies at 5.7 $\le$ z $\le$ 7.0. This is the tenth in a series of papers from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, which exploits the deep multi-band imaging data produced by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. The total number of spectroscopically identified objects in SHELLQs has now grown to 93 high-z quasars, 31 high-z luminous galaxies, 16 [O III] emitters at z ~ 0.8, and 65 Galactic cool dwarfs (low-mass stars and brown dwarfs). These objects were found over 900 deg2, surveyed by HSC between 2014 March and 2018 January. The full quasar sample includes 18 objects with very strong and narrow Ly alpha emission, whose stacked spectrum is clearly different from that of other quasars or galaxies. While the stacked spectrum shows N V 1240 emission and resembles that of lower-z narrow-line quasars, the small Ly alpha width may suggest a significant contribution from the host galaxies. We report the discovery of a quasar at z = 7.07, which was selected from the deep multi-band imaging data collected by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. This quasar, HSC J124353.93+010038.5, has an order of magnitude lower luminosity than do the other known quasars at z > 7. The rest-frame ultraviolet absolute magnitude is M1450 = -24.13 +/- 0.08 mag and the bolometric luminosity is Lbol = (1.4 +/- 0.1) x 10^{46} erg/s. Its spectrum in the optical to near-infrared shows strong emission lines, and shows evidence for a fast gas outflow, as the C IV line is blueshifted and there is indication of broad absorption lines. The Mg II-based black hole mass is Mbh = (3.3 +/- 2.0) x 10^8 Msun, thus indicating a moderate mass accretion rate with an Eddington ratio 0.34 +/- 0.20. It is the first z > 7 quasar with sub-Eddington accretion, besides being the third most distant quasar, known to date. The luminosity and black hole mass are comparable to, or even lower than, those measured for the majority of low-z quasars discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and thus this quasar likely represents a z > 7 counterpart to quasars commonly observed in the low-z universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

From 2013 April to 2014 April, we performed an X-ray and optical simultaneous monitoring of the type 1.5 Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516. It employed Suzaku, and 5 Japanese ground-based telescopes, the Pirka, Kiso Schmidt, Nayuta, MITSuME, and the Kanata telescopes. The Suzaku observations were conducted seven times with various intervals ranging from days, weeks, to months, with an exposure of $\sim50$ ksec each. The optical $B$-band observations not only covered those of Suzaku almost simultaneously, but also followed the source as frequently as possible. As a result, NGC 3516 was found in its faint phase with the 2-10 keV flux of $0.21-2.70 \times 10^{-11}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. The 2-45 keV X-ray spectra were composed of a dominant variable hard power-law continuum with a photon index of $\sim1.7$, and a non-relativistic reflection component with a prominent Fe-K$\alpha$ emission line. Producing the $B$-band light curve by differential image photometry, we found that the $B$-band flux changed by $\sim2.7 \times 10^{-11}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, which is comparable to the X-ray variation, and detected a significant flux correlation between the hard power-law component in X-rays and the $B$-band radiation, for the first time in NGC 3516. By examining their correlation, we found that the X-ray flux preceded that of $B$ band by $2.0^{+0.7}_{-0.6}$ days ($1\sigma$ error). Although this result supports the X-ray reprocessing model, the derived lag is too large to be explained by the standard view which assumes a "lamppost"-type X-ray illuminator located near a standard accretion disk. Simultaneous-color Wide-field Infrared Multi-object Spectrograph, SWIMS, is one of the first generation instruments for University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory 6.5m Telescope where almost continuous atmospheric window from 0.9 to 2.5μm appears, thanks to the high altitude and dry climate of the site. To utilize this excellent condition, SWIMS is capable of simultaneous two-color imaging with a field of view of 9’. in diameter and λ/Δλ ~1000 multi-object spectroscopy at 0.9–2.5μm in a single exposure, utilizing a dichroic mirror inserted in the collimated beam. Here, we overview the instrument, report results of its full-assembly tests in the laboratory and present the future plan.

MIMIZUKU is the first-generation mid-infrared instrument for the university of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) 6.5-m telescope. MIMIZUKU provides imaging and spectroscopic monitoring capabilities in a wide wavelength range from 2 to 38 μm, including unique bands like 2.7-μm and 30-μm band. Recently, we decided to add spectroscopic functions, KL-band mode (λ= 2.1-4.0 μm; R =λ/Δλ ~ 210) and 2.7-μm band mode ( λ= 2.4-2.95 μm; R ~ 620), and continuous spectroscopic coverage from 2.1 to 26 μm is realized by this update. Their optical designing is completed, and fabrications of optical elements are ongoing. As recent progress, we also report the completion of the cryogenic system and optics. The cryogenic system has been updated by changing materials and structures of thermal links, and the temperatures of the optical bench and detector mounting stages finally achieved required temperatures. Their stability against instrument attitude is also confirmed through an inclination test. As for the optics, its gold-plated mirrors have been recovered from galvanic corrosion by refabrication and reconstruction. Enough image quality and stability are confirmed by room-temperature tests. MIMIZUKU is intended to be completed in this autumn, and commissioning at the Subaru telescope and scientific operations on the TAO telescope are planned in 2017 and around 2019, respectively. In this paper, these development activities and future prospects of MIMIZUKU are reported.
