The lifelong tooth replacement in elasmobranch fishes (sharks, rays and skates) has led to the assemblage of a great number of teeth from fossil and extant species, rendering tooth morphology an important character for taxonomic descriptions, analysing phylogenetic interrelationships and deciphering their evolutionary history (e.g. origination, divergence, extinction). Heterodonty (exhibition of different tooth morphologies) occurs in most elasmobranch species and has proven to be one of the main challenges for these analyses. Although numerous shark species are discovered and described every year, detailed descriptions of tooth morphologies and heterodonty patterns are lacking or are only insufficiently known for most species. Here, we use landmark-based 2D geometric morphometrics on teeth of the tiger shark Galeocerdo cuvier to analyse and describe dental heterodonties among four different ontogenetic stages ranging from embryo to adult. Our results reveal rather gradual and subtle ontogenetic shape changes, mostly characterized by increasing size and complexity of the teeth. We furthermore provide the first comprehensive description of embryonic dental morphologies in tiger sharks. Also, tooth shapes of tiger sharks in different ontogenetic stages are re-assessed and depicted in detail. Finally, multiple cases of tooth file reversal are described. This study, therefore, contributes to our knowledge of dental traits across ontogeny in the extant tiger shark G. cuvier and provides a baseline for further morphological and genetic studies on the dental variation in sharks. Therefore, it has the potential to assist elucidating the underlying developmental and evolutionary processes behind the vast dental diversity observed in elasmobranch fishes today and in deep time.

Examination of the uterus of a dead female white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), which contained the earliest known white shark embryos, revealed that the uterine wall produces lipid-rich secretion (histotroph or "uterine milk") for embryonic nutrition. Uterine tissue was processed for light and electron microscopy, and immunohistochemical techniques to identify its secretory mechanism. Our results indicate that the white shark uterus secretes lipids via holocrine secretion. This type of secretion is characterized by the release of large lipid droplets accumulated in the epithelial cells into the uterine lumen through cell disintegration. The secretory epithelium of the uterus is stratified, and new surface epithelial cells are continuously supplied from deeper epithelial layers to replace the dead secretory cells at the surface. This vertical replacement possibly facilitates the active renewal of the surface epithelium, which is necessary for maintaining holocrine secretory mechanisms. These secretory mechanisms are different from those of myliobatiform stingrays, another elasmobranch taxon that exhibits lipid histotrophy. This may reflect the different origins of lipid histotrophy between these taxa.

We analyzed the internal structure of the nasal cavities of hawksbill, olive ridley and black sea turtles from computed tomography images. The nasal cavities of all three species consisted of a vestibule, nasopharyngeal duct and cavum nasi proprium that included anterodorsal, posterodorsal and anteroventral diverticula, and a small posteroventral salience formed by a fossa of the wall. These findings were similar to those of green and loggerhead sea turtles (Cheloniidae), but differed from those of leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelyidae). Compared to the Cheloniidae species, the nasal cavity in leatherback sea turtles was relatively shorter, wider and larger in volume. Those structural features of the nasal cavity of leatherback sea turtles might help to suppress heat dissipation and reduce water pressure within the nasal cavity in cold and deep waters.

In viviparous (live-bearing) animals, embryos face an embryo-specific defecation issue: faecal elimination in utero can cause fatal contamination of the embryonic environment. Our data from the viviparous red stingray (Hemitrygon akajei) reveals how viviparous elasmobranchs circumvent this issue. The exit of the embryonic intestine is maintained closed until close to birth, which allows the accumulation of faeces in the embryonic body. Faecal accumulation abilities are increased by (1) the large intestine size (represents about 400–600% of an adult intestine, proportionally), and (2) the modification in the intestinal inner wall structure, specialized to increase water uptake from the faecal matter. According to the literature, faecal accumulation may occur in embryos of the lamniform white shark as well. The reproductive biology of myliobatiform stingrays and lamniform sharks is characterized by the onset of oral feeding before birth (i.e. drinking of uterine milk and eating of sibling eggs, respectively), which is expected to result in the production of large amounts of faeces during gestation. The strong ability of faecal accumulation in these lineages is therefore likely an adaptation to their unique embryonic nutrition mechanism.

In this study, we examined the structure of the heart of the whale shark, Rhincodon typus, using a plastination technique and three-dimensional X-ray computer tomography (3DCT). Inspection of the atrium revealed a symmetric distribution of the pectinate muscles attached to the commissures of the sino-atrial valve, suggesting some functional advantages. The majority of the ventricular wall comprised spongiosa, and compacta accounted for only ~3% of the entire thickness. There were three major fiber orientations in the spongiosa: the fibers on the endocardial side formed trabeculae that were aligned with the blood flow tract, whereas those on the epicardial side formed a circular pattern around the flow tract. Transmural myofibers connected the inner and outer layers in the spongiosa, which may serve as an intraventricular conduction pathway. Plastination and 3DCT is a powerful combination that allowed for multifaceted visualization of the internal structure of rare heart specimens in a nondestructive manner. For benthic fishes, breathing motion (e.g., oral, pharyngeal, and branchial movements) can result in detection by both prey and predators. Here we investigate the respiratory behavior of the angelshark Squatina japonica (Pisces: Squatiniformes: Squatinidae) to reveal how benthic elasmobranchs minimize this risk of detection. Sonographic analyses showed that the angelshark does not utilize water-pumping in the oropharyngeal cavity during respiration. This behavior is in contrast with most benthic fishes, which use the rhythmical expansion/contraction of the oropharyngeal cavity as the main pump to generate the respiratory water current. In the angelshark, breathing motion is restricted to the gill flaps located on the ventral side of the body. We suspect that the gill flaps function as an active pump to eject water through the gill slits. This respiratory mode allows conspicuous breathing motion to be concealed under the body, thereby increasing crypsis capacity.

Ram ventilation, which is characterized by the production of a respiratory water current over the gill by locomotory effort, widely occurs among pelagic sharks. However, the process by which the juvenile starts this respiratory mechanism remains largely unknown. The captive birth of a Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium on 23 March 2017 permitted the examination of the parturition process and behavior of newborn juveniles of this species. Sonographic examination of the pregnant female showed that, unlike adult Tiger Sharks, embryos used buccal pumping, revealing that Tiger Shark shifts its respiratory mechanism from buccal pumping to ram ventilation after birth. Our observation also showed that ram ventilation of the neonate was not continuous, and buccal pumping was also used when the neonate intermittently rested on the bottom of the tank. We speculate that this behavior is the transitional phase in the shift from buccal pumping to ram ventilation in neonates, and continuous ram ventilation may be established after the development of continuous and fast swimming abilities.

The spiracle of elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays) is a gill-slit-derived tube located behind the eye. Its inner structure was well studied in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, but its entire morphology has rarely been characterized and is poorly understood. The present study shows the three-dimensional morphology of the spiracular tube for the first time, using resin injection and CT scanning, in the Japanese bullhead shark. The spiracular tube is characterized by the presence of two caeca (dorsal and ventral spiracular caeca) on the medial wall of the spiracular tube and the presence of a pseudobranch on the anterior wall. The lunate-shaped caudal fin in lamnid sharks is a morphological specialization for their thunniform mode of locomotion, but its developmental process during gestation has been poorly investigated. Observations of 21 embryonic specimens of the white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) revealed that their caudal fin morphology drastically changes from strongly heterocercal to lunate-shaped through ontogeny. This morphological change involves (1) rapid elongation of the ventral lobe, (2) increased upward curvature of the vertebra within the caudal fin, and (3) formation of keels at both lateral sides of the caudal fin base. These morphological changes are probably shared among the members of the family Lamnidae and are in contrast with the developmental process of the heterocercal tail in the lamniform Carcharias taurus, in which the caudal fin morphology is almost unchanged through the late gestation period. The present study provides a noninvasive method to estimate the body volume of sharks (Elasmobranchii, Selachii) using a computational geometric model. This method allows the volume of sharks to be estimated from lateral and ventral photographs assuming an elliptical body cross-sectional geometry. A comparison of the estimated and actual body volumes of several shark species showed that the estimation error was Applying this model to captive whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) that were 8.0 and 8.8 m in total length revealed that their body volumes were 3.5 and 4.5 m3, respectively. These estimates allowed for the quantitative evaluation of our hypothesis, that the whale shark uses suctioned air for buoyancy control during vertical feeding—a behavior unique to this species among elasmobranchs. The volume estimates of the captive whale sharks, together with the density estimates from their liver proportions, revealed that the air occupying a part of oro-pharyngeal and branchial cavities can help the whale sharks to keep their body floating. This hypothesis may explain how the whale shark sometimes stays at the water surface without fin motion during vertical feeding, even though their body density is greater than that of seawater.

Unlike most viviparous vertebrates, lamniform sharks develop functional teeth during early gestation. This feature is considered to be related to their unique reproductive mode where the embryo grows to a large size via feeding on nutritive eggs in utero. However, the developmental process of embryonic teeth is largely uninvestigated. We conducted X-ray microcomputed tomography to observe the dentitions of early-, mid-, and full-term embryos of the white shark Carcharodon carcharias (Lamniformes, Lamnidae). These data reveal the ontogenetic change of embryonic dentition of the species for the first time. Dentition of the early-term embryos (∼45 cm precaudal length, PCL) is distinguished from adult dentition by 1) the presence of microscopic teeth in the distalmost region of the paratoquadrate, 2) a fang-like crown morphology, and 3) a lack of basal concavity of the tooth root. The “intermediate tooth” of early-term embryos is almost the same size as the adjacent teeth, suggesting that lamnoid-type heterodonty (lamnoid tooth pattern) has not yet been established. We also discovered that mid-term embryos (∼80 cm PCL) lack functional dentition. Previous studies have shown that the maternal supply of nutritive eggs in lamnoid sharks ceases during mid- to late-gestation. Thus, discontinuation of functional tooth development is likely associated with the completion of the oophagous (egg-eating) phase. Replacement teeth in mid-term embryos include both embryonic and adult-type teeth, suggesting that the embryo to adult transition in dental morphology occurs during this period. J. Workshops are an important part of the IFPA annual meeting as they allow for discussion of specialized topics. At IFPA meeting 2018 there were nine themed workshops, four of which are summarized in this report. These workshops discussed new knowledge and technological innovations in the following areas of research: 1) viviparity in ocean-living species; 2) placental imaging; 3) epigenetics; and 4) extracellular vesicles in pregnancy.

Underwater ultrasound, a new tool for observing the internal body parts of aquatic animals by scuba divers, allowed us long‐term and frequent observations of the embryos of captive aquatic vertebrates. New ultrasound data of captive tawny nurse sharks (Nebrius ferrugineus) revealed that their embryos frequently migrate between the right and left uteri during gestation. This report is the first reliable evidence of active embryonic locomotion in live‐bearing vertebrates and is contradictory to the concept of “sedentary embryo” which has mainly arisen from studies of mammals. The tawny nurse shark is unique among orectolobiform sharks, in which the embryo develops by feeding on sibling eggs in utero. Thus, we hypothesized that swimming aids in an efficient search and capture of these eggs in the uterine environment.

Unlike many tetrapods and elasmobranchs, eye-closing ability is absent in bony fishes, with the single-known exception of the family Tetraodontidae. We observed the eye-closing response of the tetraodontid fine-patterned puffer, Takifugu flavipterus, which provides the first detailed data on the kinematics and mechanism of this ability in this family. During eye-closing behavior, the skin around the eye converges toward the center of the iris. This is very different to the reversing uni-directional (e.g., upward then downward) movement of the eyelids of other vertebrates. Electrical stimulation of a freshly dead specimen showed that this movement occurs due to the contraction of a sheet of muscle located just beneath the skin around the eye, which is characteristic of Family Tetraodontidae. Eye-closing is accompanied by simultaneous retraction of the eyeball away from the surface, which is initiated just before the skin of the eye begins to move. The eye-closing ability observed in this study appears to have been acquired independently in the Tetraodontidae.

Embryos of live-bearing elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays) must acquire oxygen in the uterus for several months to more than a year, but the mechanisms of delivery and uptake are still largely unknown. Diagnostic sonography performed on a captive Japanese dogfish (Squalus japonicus) showed that a late-stage embryo used buccal movement to pump uterine fluid, suggesting that the embryo acquires oxygen from uterine fluid via gill ventilation. It has been assumed that embryonic respiration in aplacental sharks depends on oxygen supplied by the uterine wall. To test this hypothesis, the rate of oxygen diffusion was estimated by applying a physical model to the uterine wall of two dogfish species (Squalus cf. mitsukurii and Squalus cubensis). The model calculations indicate that the supply of oxygen via diffusion through the uterine villi contributes less than 15-30% of the total oxygen demand of late-stage embryos. Some previous authors have suggested that pregnant dogfish intermittently exchange uterine fluid with external seawater during late gestation. Thus, late-stage embryos may acquire oxygen primarily from uterine seawater introduced from the external environment.

Eye retraction behavior has evolved independently in some vertebrate linages such as mudskippers (fish), frogs and salamanders (amphibians), and cetaceans (mammals). In this paper, we report the eye retraction behavior of the giant guitarfish (Rhynchobatus djiddensis) for the first time, and discuss its mechanism and function. The eye retraction distance was nearly the same as the diameter of the eyeball itself, indicating that eye retraction in the giant guitarfish is probably one of the largest among vertebrates. Eye retraction is achieved by unique arrangement of the eye muscle: one of the anterior eye muscles (the obliquus inferior) is directed ventrally from the eyeball and attaches to the ventral surface of the neurocranium. Due to such muscle arrangement, the obliquus inferior can pull the eyeball ventrally. This mechanism was also confirmed by electrical stimulation of the obliquus inferior. The eye retraction ability of the giant guitarfish likely represents a novel eye protection behavior of elasmobranch fishes.

This report elaborates on adaptations of the eyes of the whale shark Rhincodon typus (Elasmobranchii, Rhincodontidae), including the discovery that they are covered with dermal denticles, which is a novel mechanism of eye protection in vertebrates. The eye denticle differs in morphology from that of the dermal denticles distributed over the rest of the body, consistent with a different function (abrasion resistance). We also demonstrate that the whale shark has a strong ability to retract the eyeball into the eye socket. The retraction distance was calculated to be approximately half the diameter of the eye, which is comparable to those of other vertebrates that are known to have highly retractable eyes. These highly protective features of the whale shark eye seem to emphasize the importance of vision for environmental perception, which contradicts the general, though poorly established, notion of low reliance on vision in this species.

The megamouth shark (Lamniformes, Megachasmidae) is one of four extant planktivorous elasmobranch lineages, but its fossil record is quite limited. In the present study, we report a new discovery of a rare megachasmid shark fossil from the late Miocene—early Pleistocene interval of Okinawa Island, Japan. To date, this specimen represents the only reliable record of a megachasmid fossil from Asia.

One of the mysteries of shark aplacental viviparity is the ability of the embryos to acquire oxygen from their mothers without a placental connection. It has been assumed that embryonic respiration in aplacental viviparous shark depends on oxygen from the uterine wall, although this hypothesis has not been confirmed quantitatively. Morphological observations of the uterine wall of white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) provided the first quantitative evidence to support the ability of the uterus to supply ample oxygen to the embryo of viviparous elasmobranchs. The uterine surface of the white shark is characterized by (1) uterine lamellae that develop perpendicular to the uterine wall, (2) uterine lamellae folded in an accordion-like fashion, and (3) numerous micro-ridges on the lamellar surface. These modifications result in increased uterine surface are to up to 56 folds compared to the uterus with a smooth surface. Histological observations revealed that the diffusion barrier of the uterine wall is approximately 12 µm. By using these values, the oxygen-diffusion capacity of 1 cm2 of the uterine wall of white shark was estimated to be 63.6 nmol·min−1·torr−1. This value is 250–400 times greater than that observed in other aplacental viviparous sharks (Squalus spp.) and is comparable with that of fish gills.

The whale shark Rhincodon typus is the world's largest fish and it occurs in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate waters. Here, the northernmost record of R. typus is reported, when it was found in the Sea of Okhotsk for the first time. This occurrence can be explained by the unusually high sea surface temperature during the summer of 2012.

The northernmost record for Chilean devil ray Mobula tarapacana, a circumglobal species that occurs in tropical, subtropical and limited warm temperate waters, is described. An adult female was caught incidentally in the Sea of Okhotsk on 17 September 2011. This specimen is the first confirmed occurrence of devil rays Mobula spp. in cold temperate waters.

Expansion of the ‘pharynx’ during breathing or capturing prey in fishes generally involves posteroventral retraction of the hyoid arch. However, the hyoid arch structure of batoid fishes (skates, rays, guitarfishes, and sawfishes) is unique, and how they expand the pharyngeal cavity is poorly understood. To investigate the mechanism of pharyngeal expansion during breathing in the yellow-spotted fanray, Platyrhina tangi, we conducted anatomical and kinematic investigations of the pharyngeal region. Our study revealed that the yellow-spotted fanray and sharks have different skeletal linkage systems for pharyngeal expansion. During pharyngeal expansion in the yellow-spotted fanray, the hyoid bar and branchial apparatus rotate ventrally around the hinge joint between the fifth ceratobranchial cartilage and the pectoral girdle. This pharyngeal expansion mechanism appears to be widespread among batoid fishes and is unique among cartilaginous fishes (sharks, batoids, and holocephalans). Batoid fishes possibly developed this pharyngeal expansion mechanism during early batoid evolution.

Hexanchiformes is regarded as a monophyletic taxon, but the morphological and genetic relationships between the five extant species within the order are still uncertain. In this study, we determined the whole mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences of seven sharks including representatives of the five Hexanchiformes, one squaliform, and one carcharhiniform and inferred the phylogenetic relationships among those species and 12 other Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fishes) species for which the complete mitogenome is available. The monophyly of Hexanchiformes and its close relation with all other Squaliformes sharks were strongly supported by likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analysis of 13,749 aligned nucleotides of 13 protein coding genes and two rRNA genes that were derived from the whole mDNA sequences of the 19 species. The phylogeny suggested that Hexanchiformes is in the superorder Squalomorphi,Chlamydoselachus anguineus(frilled shark) is the sister species to all other Hexanchiformes, and the relations within Hexanchiformes are well resolved asChlamydoselachus, (Notorynchus, (Heptranchias, (Hexanchus griseus,H. nakamurai))). Based on our phylogeny, we discussed evolutionary scenarios of the jaw suspension mechanism and gill slit numbers that are significant features in the sharks.

The Lamniformes are a shark clade which occupies the highest trophic-level regimes in extant marine ecosystems, and includes the largest fish-eating shark, Carcharodon carcharias. However, the ancestor of this taxon is thought to be a small shark. In order to evaluate the trophic position of the lamniform shark ancestor, I first developed a new method to estimate the mouth size of fossil lamniform sharks from isolated teeth, and then estimated the mouth size of the oldest recorded lamniform shark genus, Protolamna. This method can predict the mouth size of a fossil lamniform shark if the original tooth position within a jaw or the most closely related extant species is unknown. The result suggests that the mouth size of Protolamna was smaller than most extant Lamniformes. This estimate indicates that they likely fed on small prey, considering that mouth size determines the upper limit of prey size. This finding indicates that extant lamniform sharks evolved from lower trophic-level ancestors.

Remains of 11 species of extinct elasmobranch were obtained from the Oligocene Yamaga Formation on Ainoshima Island in northern Kitakyushu City, Japan. More than 360 gill rakers belonging to a basking shark (Cetorhinus sp.) individual were collected from a stratigraphic horizon in the northern part of the island. This report represents the highest concentration of basking shark gill rakers in the fossil record of Japan. Based on sedimentary facies analysis combined with habitat data of extant sharks, habitats of Oligocene elasmobranchs were reconstructed. The result indicates that Oligocene sharks probably lived in an environment similar to that of extant sharks at the genus level. This does not support the previous hypotheses that some shark taxa (e.g., Hexanchus) existed within shallow environments during the Oligocene, and have since migrated into deeper water habitats. Five striking and prey capture events of two goblin sharks were videotaped at sea for the first time, showing their extraordinary biting process. The goblin sharks swung their lower jaw downward and backward to attain a huge gape and then rapidly protruded the jaws forward a considerable distance. The jaws were projected at a maximum velocity of 3.1 m/s to 8.6–9.4% of the total length of the shark, which is by far the fastest and greatest jaw protrusion among sharks. While the jaws were being retracted, the mouth opened and closed again, which was considered a novel feeding event for sharks. Phylogenetic evidence suggested that their feeding behavior has evolved as an adaptation to food-poor deep-sea environments, possibly as a trade-off for the loss of strong swimming ability.

Respiration in fishes involves buccal pumping, which is characterized by the generation of nearly continuous water flow over the gills because of the rhythmic expansion/compression of the pharyngeal cavity. This mechanism is achieved by the functions of the vascular, skeletal, and muscular systems. However, the process by which the embryo establishes the mechanism remains a mystery. Morphological and kinematical observations on captive cloudy catsharks, Scyliorhinus torazame, have suggested that the embryo starts buccal pumping just before the respiratory slits open on the egg capsule. During the pre-opening period, the embryo acquires oxygen mainly via the external gill filaments. After slit opening, respiration of the embryo involves buccal pumping to pass water over the "internal gills." The onset of buccal pumping accompanies four morphological changes: (1) regression of the external gill filaments, (2) development of blood vessels within the "internal gills," (3) completion of the development of hyoid skeletal and muscular elements, and (4) development of the oral valve. A previous study showed that buccal pumping allows the embryo to actively regulate oxygen intake by changing the pumping frequency. Thus, establishment of buccal pumping in the egg capsule is probably important for embryo survival in the unstable oxygen environment of the egg capsule after slit opening.

This is the first known report on the skeletal and muscular systems, and the skin histology, of the pectoral fin of the rare planktivorous megamouth shark Megachasma pelagios. The pectoral fin is characterized by three features: 1) a large number of segments in the radial cartilages; 2) highly elastic pectoral fin skin; and 3) a vertically-rotated hinge joint at the pectoral fin base. These features suggest that the pectoral fin of the megamouth shark is remarkably flexible and mobile, and that this flexibility and mobility enhance dynamic lift control, thus allowing for stable swimming at slow speeds. The flexibility and mobility of the megamouth shark pectoral fin contrasts with that of fast-swimming sharks, such as Isurus oxyrhinchus and Lamna ditropis, in which the pectoral fin is stiff and relatively immobile.

We conducted an ultrasonographic experiment on a pregnant manta ray, Manta alfredi (Chondrichthyes, Batoidea). This study showed how the embryo of the live-bearing elasmobranchs respires in the body of the female. In the embryonic stage, the manta ray embryo takes in uterine fluid by buccal-pumping. After birth, the manta ray shifts its respiratory mode from buccal-pumping to ram-ventilation. The rapid reduction of the spiracle size in the young manta ray may reflect this shift of respiratory mode. Unlike mammals or some carcharhinid sharks that acquire oxygen through a placenta and umbilical cord, the manta ray embryo does not have a direct connection with the mother. Thus, the manta ray embryo obtains oxygen by buccal-pumping of the uterine fluid, in the same way that the embryos of egg-laying species obtain oxygen from the water in the egg case. This finding extends our understanding of the diversity of embryonic respiratory systems in live-bearing vertebrates.

Mesozoic marine reptiles and modern marine mammals are often considered ecological analogs, but the extent of their similarity is largely unknown. Particularly important is the presence/absence of deep-diving suction feeders among Mesozoic marine reptiles because this would indicate the establishment of mesopelagic cephalopod and fish communities in the Mesozoic. A recent study suggested that diverse suction feeders, resembling the extant beaked whales, evolved among ichthyosaurs in the Triassic. However, this hypothesis has not been tested quantitatively. We examined four osteological features of jawed vertebrates that are closely linked to the mechanism of suction feeding, namely hyoid corpus ossification/calcification, hyobranchial apparatus robustness, mandibular bluntness, and mandibular pressure concentration index. Measurements were taken from 18 species of Triassic and Early Jurassic ichthyosaurs, including the presumed suction feeders. Statistical comparisons with extant sharks and marine mammals of known diets suggest that ichthyosaurian hyobranchial bones are significantly more slender than in suction-feeding sharks or cetaceans but similar to those of ram-feeding sharks. Most importantly, an ossified hyoid corpus to which hyoid retractor muscles attach is unknown in all but one ichthyosaur, whereas a strong integration of the ossified corpus and cornua of the hyobranchial apparatus has been identified in the literature as an important feature of suction feeders. Also, ichthyosaurian mandibles do not narrow rapidly to allow high suction pressure concentration within the oral cavity, unlike in beaked whales or sperm whales. In conclusion, it is most likely that Triassic and Early Jurassic ichthyosaurs were 'ram-feeders', without any beaked-whale-like suction feeder among them. When combined with the inferred inability for dim-light vision in relevant Triassic ichthyosaurs, the fossil record of ichthyosaurs does not suggest the establishment of modern-style mesopelagic animal communities in the Triassic. This new interpretation matches the fossil record of coleoids, which indicates the absence of soft-bodied deepwater species in the Triassic.
