This study aims to assess the incidence and clinical characteristics of DILD among patients with ML and compares the serum level of Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6) with that of circulating thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC)/CC chemokine ligand 17 (CCL17) as a diagnostic biomarker for DILD.Patients and methods: Between July 2011 and August 2016, we enrolled 36 patients with ML who were undergoing systemic chemotherapy at our hospital. Then, we evaluated the serum concentration of KL-6 and TARC/CCL17 by a sandwich-type electrochemiluminescence immunoassay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively.Results: DILD developed in 22.2% of patients with ML. All patients recovered immediately after the discontinuation of causative drug and/or glucocorticoid therapy. Although the sensitivity of both TARC/CCL17 and KL-6 was almost equal, the mean concentration of serum KL-6 after the progression of interstitial lung disease was significantly higher than that before progression.Conclusion: DILD developed in patients who were treated with first-line rituximab combined regimen. Remarkably, TARC/CCL17 and KL-6 seemed approximately equal as a predictive biomarkers for DILD; however, KL-6 was more specific than TARC/CCL17. We hypothesized that TXA could improve macular edema (ME) that is caused by an increase in retinal vascular permeability. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of oral TXA for ME associated with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) or diabetic ME (DME).Patients and methods: Oral TXA (1,500 mg daily for 2 weeks) was administered to patients with persistent ME secondary to RVO (7 eyes) and DME (7 eyes). After 2 weeks (ie, the final day of administration) and 6 weeks (ie, 4 weeks after the final administration), best-corrected visual acuity and central macular thickness (CMT) were measured and compared with baseline. Analyses were performed for RVO and DME cases. No other treatment was performed during the study period.Results: In RVO cases, significant improvement in CMT was found between baseline (467.7±121.4 µm) and 2-week measurements after treatment (428.7±110.5 µm, p=0.024). No significant change was found in CMT between measurements taken at baseline and 6 weeks after treatment. In DME cases, no significant change was found in CMT between measurements taken at baseline and 2 or 6 weeks after treatment. In all analyses of best-corrected visual acuity, no significant change was observed.Conclusion: The results support the hypothesis that plasmin plays a role in the development of ME associated with RVO, and oral TXA administration may be useful as an adjuvant treatment when combined with other agents such as anti-vascular endothelial growth factor. In recent years gas-phase chemical studies assisted by physical pre-separation allowed for the investigation of fragile single molecular species by gas-phase chromatography. The latest success with the heaviest group 6 transactinide seaborgium is highlighted. The formation of a very volatile hexacarbonyl compound Sg(CO)6 was observed similarly to its lighter homologues molybdenum and tungsten. The interactions of these gaseous carbonyl complex compounds with quartz surfaces were investigated by thermochromatography. Second-generation experiments are under way to investigate the intramolecular bond between the central metal atom of the complexes and the ligands addressing the influence of relativistic effects in the heaviest compounds. Our contribution comprises some aspects of the ongoing challenging experiments as well as an outlook towards other interesting compounds related to volatile complex compounds in the gas phase.

The annual 14C data in tree rings is an outstanding proxy for uncovering extreme solar energetic particle (SEP) events in the past. Signatures of extreme SEP events have been reported in 774/775 CE, 992/993 CE, and ~660 BCE. Here, we report another rapid increase of 14C concentration in tree rings from California, Switzerland, and Finland around 5410 BCE. These 14C data series show a significant increase of ~6‰ in 5411-5410 BCE. The signature of 14C variation is very similar to the confirmed three SEP events and points to an extreme short-term flux of cosmic ray radiation into the atmosphere. The rapid 14C increase in 5411/5410 BCE rings occurred during a period of high solar activity and 60 years after a grand 14C excursion during 5481-5471 BCE. The similarity of our 14C data to previous events suggests that the origin of the 5410 BCE event is an extreme SEP event. Plain Language Summary The 14C data of tree rings register extreme storms of solar energetic particles (SEPs), far larger than the largest SEP event ever observed in the Space Era. So far, three extreme SEP events have been reported as a rapid 14C increase in tree rings and 10Be and 36Cl increases in ice cores. In this study, we found a new rapid 14C increase in 5410 BCE using annual 14C content in ring samples from California, Switzerland, and Finland. The 14C signature of 5410 BCE event ties the origin of this 14C excursion to an extreme SEP event similar to three other extreme SEP events (774/775 CE, 992/993 CE, and ~660 BCE) confirmed with radionuclides of ice cores.
