The first enantioselective Pictet-Spengler reaction of acyclic α-ketoesters with tryptamines has been developed. Excellent yields and enantioselectivity were obtained for the reaction using chiral imidazoline-phosphoric acid catalysts. Density functional theory calculations suggested possible transition states that explain the origin of chiral induction. This process provides an efficient route for the synthesis of tetrahydro-β-carboline derivatives.

This paper provides the first report of the intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition of vinylsilane. The [2+2] cycloaddition of allenes is a useful reaction that can synthesize cyclobutanes. However, no previous works have attempted to control the regioselectivity between the two double bonds of allenes only by changing the reaction conditions, although there have been some reports of the regioselective [2+2] cycloaddition of allenes by changing the substrate. In this study, we have succeeded in controlling intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition reactions at the proximal and distal positions of allenes simply by changing the reaction conditions. We found that the atomic radius of silicon is very important for perfect control of the reaction's sites. The structures of all key compounds were determined by the crystal sponge method which could identify the structures of liquid compounds.

The first enantioselective hydrophosphonylation of ketimines with phosphine oxides was developed. The reaction of unprotected ketimines with phosphine oxides using a bis(imidazoline)-phosphoric acid catalyst gave chiral α-quaternary aminophosphorous compounds having a primary amino group in excellent yields and enantioselectivities. Based on experimental results and DFT calculation, transition states were proposed to explain the stereoselectivity of the reaction.

We have developed a one-iridium-catalyst system that transforms N-allyl-N-sulfonyl-2-(silylalkynyl)aniline derivatives, which are 1,7-enynes in which both multiple bonds have a heteroatom, to the corresponding substituted indole derivatives via isomerization/cycloisomerization/aromatization. This strategy provides an atom-economical and straightforward synthetic approach to a series of valuable indoles having vinyl and silylmethyl groups at the 2- and 3-positions.

The first successful example of a catalytic enantioselective intramolecular Tishchenko reaction of a meso-dialdehyde in the presence of a chiral iridium complex is described. Chiral lactones were obtained in good yields with up to 91% ee. The obtained enantioenriched lactones were utilized for the first synthesis of (S)-cedarmycins A and B.

We report N,N-dimethylformamide-stabilised Pd nanoparticle (Pd NP)-catalysed transfer vinylation of alcohols from vinyl ether. Pd NPs combined with bathophenanthroline exhibited high catalytic activity. This reaction proceeded with low catalyst loading and the catalyst remained effective even after many rounds of recycling. The observation of the catalyst using transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering implied no deleterious aggregation of Pd NPs.

We have developed a continuous microwave irradiation-assisted Buchwald–Hartwig amination using our original Pd nanoparticle catalyst with a copper plate as a co-existing metal solid. In this methodology, a microwave-controlled product selectivity was achieved between Buchwald–Hartwig amination and aryne amination performed under strongly basic conditions and at a high reaction temperature, because a polar chemical species such as Ar–Pd–halogen might be activated selectively by microwave radiation. Moreover, our catalyst could be used repeatedly over 10 times, and the amount of Pd leaching could be suppressed to a low level.

Ti-Pd alloy catalysts were developed for the cross β-arylmethylation between arylmethylalcohols and different primary alcohols via a hydrogen autotransfer mechanism. The alloy catalysts could be reused multiple times without the need for pre-activation. Analysis of the reaction solution by inductively coupled plasma atomic absorption spectroscopy indicated that only a minimal amount of Ti and no Pd was leached from the catalyst.

The catalytic enantioselective oxidative hetero-coupling of arenols using a chiral vanadium(V) complex has been developed. The coupling of hydroxycarbazole derivatives with various arenols provided axially chiral biarenols with high chemo-, regio-, and enantioselectivities. The reaction took place under mild conditions and exhibited satisfactory functional group tolerance. Aerobic oxidative hetero-coupling with β-ketoesters also proceeded with high chemo- and stereoselectivities under slightly modified reaction conditions.

Two new macrolides, iriomoteolides-14a (1) and 14b (2) have been isolated from the marine dinoflagellate Amphidinium species (strain KCA09057). Compounds 1 and 2 are 15-membered macrolides, which are structural analogs of amphidinolides O (3) and P (4). The structures of 1 and 2 were assigned on the basis of detailed NMR analyses and chemical conversion studies. Compounds 1 and 2 showed moderate cytotoxic activity against human cervix adenocarcinoma HeLa cells.

α-Amino acid chlorides are reactive coupling agents in amide (peptide) formation. The Vilsmeier reagent ((chloromethylene)dimethylammonium chloride) offers a convenient way to prepare α-amino acid chlorides for peptide synthesis. Its use with N-trifluoracetyl (TFA)-protected isoleucine and allo-isoleucine is described. The 1H-NMR of the α-proton signal offers a convenient way to monitor the chirality retention in the acid chloride forming reaction and subsequent Friedel-Crafts acylation of arenes which result in α-amino acid aryl-ketone with no loss of chirality.

We report on the absorption, fluorescence, and two-photon excitation spectra of a series of 5-phenylisoindolo[2,1-a]quinoline dyes. Depending on the substituents, we observed increasing two-photon absorption cross sections, with values up to 56 GM@973 nm, which are similar to those of the enhanced green fluorescent protein and fluorescein, common fluorescent chromophores.
