This paper describes an attempt to synthesize bismuth-doped diamond by plasma CVD. Solid bismuth was inserted into the reaction plasma of CH4 and H2. Examination by TEM showed that most of the bismuth was included as Bi nanoparticles in the carbon nanospheres, which segregated at the grain boundary of the diamond polycrystals. Diffraction peaks corresponding to the carbon allotrope Chaoite were observed at the grain boundaries. The Raman spectra showed very complex features between 100–1600 cm− 1, suggesting the existance of molecule-like species.

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the water entry phenomenon. A facility was designed to carry out the tests with the entry velocities of around 352 m/s. Visualization, pressure measurement, velocity measurement and underwater impact test were performed to investigate the hydroballistic behavior of the underwater moving body, the underwater flow field, the supercavitation, etc.. This study shows that the motion of a high-speed underwater body is strongly three-dimensional and chaotic. Furthermore, it is found that the distribution of the trajectory deflection of the underwater projectile depends on the depth of water. It is also found by measuring the deformation on a witness plate submerged in water, that the impact energy of an underwater projectile is reduced as it penetrates deeper into water.

When a high-speed projectile penetrates into water, a cavity is formed behind the projectile. The gas enclosed in the cavity experiences a nonequilibrium process, i.e., the gas pressure decreases as the projectile moves more deeply into water. As a result, the cavity is sealed near the free surface (surface closure) and subsequently the cavity breaks up in water (deep closure). Accompanying the break-up of the cavity, secondary shock waves appear. This is the so-called supercavitation in water entry. This paper describes an experimental investigation into the water entry phenomenon. Projectiles of 342 m/s were generated from a small-bore rifle that was fixed vertically in the experimental facility. The projectiles were fired into a windowed water tank. A shadowgraph optical observation was performed to observe the entry process of the projectile and the formation and collapse of the cavity behind the projectile. A number of interesting observations relating to the motion of the free surface, the splash, the underwater bubbly flow and so on were found. [S0098-2202(00)00204-2]
