Abstract

A wideband improvement for hybrid plasmonic fractal patch nanoantenna is presented for use in intra/inter chip optical interconnects. The suggested fractal patch antenna covering a part of U-band (1625-1675), L-band (1565-1625nm), C-band (1530-¬1565nm), S-band (1460-1530nm), E-band (1360-1460nm) and most of O-band (1260-1360nm) optical communication bands. The proposed antenna has a promising future use in inter and intra chip optical communications to eliminate electrical interconnection limitations such as interconnect density, power consumption and also increasing data rate. The performance of this antenna has been evaluated using full wave simulation computer simulation technology (CST) Microwave software. The impedance bandwidth is largely enhanced by applying rectangular fractal cuts to the both sides of patch. The proposed antenna achieves a wider bandwidth from 168 THz to 228 THz (B.W.=60 THz), which is about 8 times greater the bandwidth of reference antenna with a good gain and more than 95% radiation efficiency throughout the operational bandwidth.

Abstract

Purpose This paper aims to examine a research model that links knowledge sharing enablers, processes and outcome dimensions in law enforcement in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It attempts to examine the impact of knowledge self-efficacy and top management support on knowledge donating and collecting. It also attempts to examine the effect of these two aspects of knowledge sharing on firm innovation capability. Design/methodology/approach This study used a quantitative approach, with data collected by questionnaire from 685 police officers in a law enforcement agency in the UAE. Findings Knowledge self-efficacy and top management support have a positive impact on knowledge donating and collecting. Only knowledge collecting, however, had a positive effect on firm innovation capability. Research limitations/implications The study has significant academic and practical implications. It supports a previous research model that links enablers, processes and outcomes of knowledge sharing, and confirms them in the context of law enforcement in the UAE. It could also help law enforcement agencies to promote a knowledge sharing culture to support innovation in the UAE. Originality/value The research model is likely to be particularly valuable in knowledge-intensive organizations such as the law enforcement sector. Knowledge sharing is often overlooked by organizations in the UAE because there has to date been little research in this field.

44. Modeling and Design of Photonic Crystal Quantum-Dot Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers.

Abstract

A novel design of electrically pumped photonic crystal quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifiers (PC-QDSOAs) is presented in this paper. Therefore, we design a single-mode flat-band slow light photonic crystal waveguide (SL-PCW) for an InAs/GaAs QDSOA in which the pumping is done by passing a current through a laterally doped p+–p–n+ structure. In addition, for the first time to our knowledge, we propose a nonlinear state space model (NSSM) for PC-QDSOAs, in which the effects of the SL-PCW dispersion relation as well as the effects of the homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadenings of QDs are considered. To do so, the SL effects on the gain enhancement factor and increase of the optical losses are evaluated by considering the wavelength dependence of the modal confinement factor, the group index dispersion, and the SL-enhanced absorption and scattering losses in the SL-PCWs with QD active region. The gain saturation characteristics and modal gain spectra of the PC-QDSOA are investigated under different conditions including pump current and the amplifier length. Simulation results show that the SL-PCWs can be used to reduce the transparency current of the amplifier by a factor of 20 and even more compared with the conventional QDSOAs based on ridge waveguide structures, and enhance the net modal gain of the QD active region by a factor of two to six over a broad wavelength range of about 62 nm. We found that the power consumption of PC-QDSOAs can be decreased by a factor of about 100, and also the amplifier length can be reduced by a factor of five and beyond, compared with the conventional QDSOAs. Abstract

SUMMARY In this article, quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifiers (QD-SOAs) have been modelled using state space method. To derive this model, we have manipulated the rate equation model of the QD-SOA, where the average values of the occupation probabilities along the QD-SOA cavity are considered as the state variables of the system. Using these variables, the distance dependence of the rate equations is eliminated. The derived state space model gives the optical gain and output signal of the amplifier with a high accuracy. Simulation results show that the derived model is not only much simpler and faster than conventional rate equation models, but also the optical gain and output signal of the investigated QD-SOA are calculated with a higher precision compared to the rate equation model.
