Search

(Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ is a rare system that has been shown to display an interesting interplay between structural quantum criticality and superconductivity. A putative structural quantum critical point, which is hidden beneath a broad superconducting dome, is believed to give rise to optimized superconducting properties in (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$. However, the presence of the superconducting dome itself hinders the examination of the quantum critical point through electrical transport, as the transport coefficients vanish in the superconducting state. Here, we use critical current density to explore within the superconducting dome. Our measurements reveal a large enhancement of the critical current density at the zero-temperature limit when the system is tuned towards the structural quantum critical point., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Using muon spin rotation and infrared spectroscopy we study the relation between magnetism and superconductivity in Ba$ _{1-x} $K$ _{x} $Fe$ _{2} $As$ _{2} $ single crystals from the underdoped to the slightly overdoped regime. We find that the Fe magnetic moment is only moderately suppressed in most of the underdoped region where it decreases more slowly than the N\'{e}el-temperature, $ T^{\mathrm{N}} $. This applies for both the total Fe moment obtained from muon spin rotation and for the itinerant component that is deduced from the spectral weight of the spin-density-wave pair breaking peak in the infrared response. In the moderately underdoped region, superconducting and static magnetic orders co-exist on the nano-scale and compete for the same electronic states. The static magnetic moment disappears rather sharply near optimal doping, however, in the slightly overdoped region there is still an enhancement or slowing down of spin fluctuations in the superconducting state. Similar to the gap magnitude reported from specific heat measurements, the superconducting condensate density is nearly constant in the optimally- and slightly overdoped region, but exhibits a rather pronounced decrease on the underdoped side. Several of these observations are similar to the phenomenology in the electron doped counterpart Ba(Fe$ _{1-y} $Co$ _{y} $)$ _{2} $As$ _{2} $., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

We discuss a recent resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) study of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+\delta}$, which infers a line of phase transitions bounding the pseudogap phase and argue that this scenario is not supported by thermodynamic evidence. We show that the anomalies in RUS, heat capacity and thermal expansion at the superconducting transition temperatures agree well. But there are large discrepancies between RUS and thermodynamic measurements at $T^*$ where the pseudogap phase transitions are purported to occur. Moreover, the frequency and temperature dependence of the RUS data for the crystal with $\delta = 0.98$, interpreted in terms of critical slowing down near an electronic phase transition, is five orders of magnitude smaller than what is expected. For this crystal the RUS data near $T^*$ are more consistent with non-equilibrium effects such as oxygen relaxation., Comment: Published version

We show from a bond valence sum correlation that very high superconducting $ T_{c} $ values should be found in optimally hole-doped infinite-layer ACuO$ _{2} $ cuprates - up to 160~K for A = Ba. The projected increase in $ T_{c} $ across the series arises from "internal pressure" effects as A runs from Mg to Ba. We then use density functional theory to investigate these pressure effects on the band structure in an attempt to understand this progressive increase in $ T_{c} $. Where these materials have been synthesised we find good agreement between our calculated structural parameters and the experimental ones. We find that internal pressure associated with increasing ion size does indeed enhance the superconducting energy gap, as observed, via modifications to the electronic dispersion. Furthermore, in our calculations, pressure alters the dispersion independently of how it is applied (internal or external) so that the superconducting energy gap correlates with the unit-cell volume and a Fermi-surface shape-parameter describing ratio of next-nearest-neighbor to nearest-neighbor hopping integrals. We infer an energy scale for the pairing interaction of the order of 1~eV, well above the magnetic energy scale.

We present the first report on a large low-temperature magnetoresistance (MR) of more than 1600% in a SrFe2As2 single crystal and 1300% in a low-energy Ca ion-implanted SrFe2As2 single crystal that occurs before the emergence of crystallographic strain-induced bulk superconductivity arising from a sample aging effect. In accordance to band structure calculations from literature, which consitently show more than 2 bands are involved in the transport, we have modeled this large MR at high fields using a 3-carrier scenario rather than solely on quantum linear MR model generally used to explain the MR in iron-pnictides. At and below 20 K the large MR may be due to 3-carrier transport in an inhomogeneous state where there are superconducting and metallic regions., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We calculate the diffusion thermoelectric power of high-Tc cuprates using the resonating-valence-bond spin-liquid model developed by Yang, Rice and Zhang (YRZ). In this model, reconstruction of the energy-momentum dispersion results in a pseudogap in the density of states that is heavily asymmetric about the Fermi level. The subsequent asymmetry in the spectral conductivity is found to account for the large magnitude and temperature dependence of the thermopower observed in underdoped cuprates. In addition we find evidence in experimental data for electron pockets in the Fermi surface, arising from a YRZ-like reconstruction, near the onset of the pseudogap in the slightly overdoped regime., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in EPL

We suggest, and demonstrate, a systematic approach to the study of cuprate superconductors, namely, progressive change of ion size in order to systematically alter the interaction strength and other key parameters. R(Ba,Sr)$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (R={La, ... Lu,Y}) is such a system where potentially obscuring structural changes are minimal. We thereby systematically alter both dielectric and magnetic properties. Dielectric fluctuation is characterized by ionic polarizability while magnetic fluctuation is characterized by exchange interactions measurable by Raman scattering. The range of transition temperatures is 70 to 107 K and we find that these correlate only with the dielectric properties, a behavior which persists with external pressure. The ultimate significance may remain to be proven but it highlights the role of dielectric screening in the cuprates and adds support to a previously proposed novel pairing mechanism involving exchange of quantized waves of electronic polarization., Comment: Manuscript: 5 pages, 4 figures. Evidence from NMR of a two-component spin system in cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductors is shown to be paralleled by similar evidence from the electronic entropy so that a two-component quasiparticle fluid is implicated. We propose that this two-component scenario is restricted to the optimal and underdoped regimes and arises from the upper and lower branches of the reconstructed energy-momentum dispersion proposed by Yang, Rice and Zhang (YRZ) to describe the pseudogap. We calculate the spin susceptibility within the YRZ formalism and show that the doping and temperature dependence reproduces the experimental data for the cuprates., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in European Physics Letters

A quarter of a century after their discovery the mechanism that pairs carriers in the cuprate high-Tc superconductors (HTS) still remains uncertain. Despite this the general consensus is that it is probably magnetic in origin [1] so that the energy scale for the pairing boson is governed by J, the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. Recent studies using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering strongly support these ideas [2]. Here as a further test we vary J (as measured by two-magnon Raman scattering) by more than 60% by changing ion sizes in the model HTS system LnA2Cu3O7-{\delta} where A=(Ba,Sr) and Ln=(La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Yb, Lu). Such changes are often referred to as "internal" pressure. Surprisingly, we find Tcmax anticorrelates with J where internal pressure is the implicit variable. This is the opposite to the effect of external pressure and suggests that J is not the dominant energy scale governing Tcmax., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We show that a multilayer analysis of the infrared c-axis response of RBa2Cu3O7-d (R=Y, Gd, Eu) provides important new information about the anomalous normal state properties of underdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors. Besides competing correlations which give rise to a pseudogap that depletes the low-energy electronic states below T*>>Tc, it enables us to identify the onset of a precursor superconducting state below Tons>Tc. We map out the doping phase diagram of Tons which reaches a maximum of ~180 K at strong underdoping and present magnetic field dependent data which confirm our conclusions., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We analyse fluctuations about $T_c$ in the specific heat of (Y,Ca)Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$, YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$. The mean-field transition temperature, $T_c^{mf}$, in the absence of fluctuations lies well above $T_c$ especially at low doping where it reaches as high as 150K. We show that phase and amplitude fluctuations set in simultaneously and $T_c^{mf}$ scales with the gap, $\Delta_0$, such that $2\Delta_0/k_BT_c^{mf}$ is comparable to the BCS weak-coupling value, 4.3, for d-wave superconductivity. A major impediment to solving the problem of high-$T_c$ superconductivity is the ongoing confusion about the magnitude, structure and doping dependence of the superconducting gap, $\Delta_0$, and of the mysterious pseudogap found in underdoped samples\cite{TallonLoram}. The pseudogap opens around the ($\pi$,0) antinodes below a temperature $T^*$ leaving Fermi arcs across the remnant Fermi surface\cite{Kanigel} on which the superconducting gap forms at $T_c$. One thing that seems agreed is that the ratio $2\Delta_0/k_BT_c$ well exceeds the BCS value and grows with underdoping\cite{Miyakawa1,Miyakawa2}, suggesting unconventional, non-BCS superconductivity. Here we re-examine data from many spectroscopies, especially Raman $B_{1g}$ and $B_{2g}$ scattering\cite{Sacuto,Guyard}, and reconcile them all within a two-gap scenario showing that the points of disagreement are an artefact of spectral-weight loss arising from the pseudogap. Crucially, we find that $\Delta_0(p)$, or more generally the order parameter, now scales with the mean-field $T_c$ value, adopting the weak-coupling BCS ratio across the entire phase diagram., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, a key reference is the arXiv paper arXiv:0908.4428

We have calculated the thermopower of the Bi2Sr2CuO6 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 superconductors using an ARPES-derived dispersion, with a model pseudogap, and a marginal-Fermi liquid scattering rate that has a minimum with respect to energy at the van Hove singularity (vHs). Good fits with data are achieved across the entire phase diagram, thus confirming the dispersions, the locations of the vHs and the dominance of the diffusion thermopower over the phonon drag contribution., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physical Review B as a Rapid Communication

By re-examining recently-published data from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we demonstrate that, in the superconducting region of the phase diagram, the pseudogap ground state is an arc metal. This scenario is consistent with results from Raman spectroscopy, specific heat and NMR. We have carried out measurements of the pressure dependence to 1.2 GPa of the oxygen isotope effect on $T_c$ in the high-$T_c$ superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ using a clamp cell in a SQUID magnetometer. This compound lies close to, but just above, the 1/8$^{th}$ doping point where in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ marked anomalies in isotope effects occur. Both isotopes show the same very large pressure dependence of $T_c$ with the result that the isotope exponent remains low ($\sim$0.08) but increases slightly with increasing pressure. We examine the generic phase behavior of high-Tc cuprate superconductors in terms a universal van Hove singularity in the strongly overdoped region. Using a rigid ARPES-derived dispersion we solve the BCS gap equation and show that the pairing interaction or pairing energy cutoff must be a rapidly declining function of doping. This result is prejudicial to a phonon-based pairing interaction and more consistent with a magnetic or magnetically enhanced interaction., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Physical Review B

Using an energy-momentum dispersion for Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 obtained from angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy we show that the shrinking Fermi arc model of the pseudogap is inconsistent with Raman scattering below Tc and specific heat near T*. The composite torsional ultrasonic oscillator, a versatile experimental system, can be used to investigate slip of Newtonian fluid at a smooth surface. A rigorous analysis of slip-dependent damping for the oscillator is presented. Initially, the phenomenon of finite surface slip and the slip length are considered for a half-space of Newtonian fluid in contact with a smooth, oscillating solid surface. Definitions are revisited and clarified in light of inconsistencies in the literature. We point out that, in general oscillating flows, Navier's slip length b is a complex number. An intuitive velocity discontinuity parameter of unrestricted phase is used to describe the effect of slip on measurement of viscous shear damping. The analysis is applied to the composite oscillator and preliminary experimental work for a 40 kHz oscillator is presented. The Non-Slip Boundary Condition (NSBC) has been verified for a hydrophobic surface in water to within ~60 nm of |b|=0 nm. Experiments were carried out at shear rate amplitudes between 230 and 6800 /s, corresponding to linear displacement amplitudes between 3.2 and 96 nm., Comment: Revised with minor edits for review

The electronic dispersion for Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+d) has been determined from angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). From this dispersion we calculate the entropy and superfluid density. Even with no adjustable parameters we obtain an exceptional match with experimental data across the entire phase diagram, thus indirectly confirming both the ARPES and thermodynamic data. The van Hove singularity is crossed in the overdoped region giving a distinctive linear-in-T temperature dependence in the superfluid density there., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

We have carried out extensive low-temperature (1.5 to 10 K) measurements of the critical field, $H_c$, for the element Pb up to a pressure of $P=1.2$ GPa. From this data the electronic entropy, specific heat, thermal expansion coefficient and compressibility is calculated as a function of temperature, pressure and magnetic field. The zero-field data is consistent with direct thermodynamic measurements and the $P$-dependence of $T_c$ and specific heat coefficient, $\gamma(T,P)$ allows the determination of the $P$-dependence of the pairing interaction., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, in press Phys. Neutron diffraction, polarized neutron transmission, and small angle neutron scattering have been used to investigate the crystal structure and nature of the magnetic order in a polycrystalline sample of RuSr2Eu1.2Ce0.8Cu2O10. The sample was made with the Eu-153 (98.8%) isotope to reduce the high neutron absorption for the naturally occurring element. Full refinements of the crystal structure, space group I4/mmm, are reported. At low temperatures only a single magnetic peak is clearly observed in a relatively wide angular range. A sharp spin reorientation transition (SRT) is observed around 35 K, close to the superconducting transition temperature (Tc~40 K). Between the spin reorientation temperature and the Neel temperature of 59 K, additional magnetic reflections are observed. However, none of these can be simply indexed on the chemical unit cell, either as commensurate peaks or simple incommensurate magnetism, and the paucity of reflections at low T compels the conclusion that these magnetic Bragg peaks arise from an impurity phase. X-ray and neutron diffraction on the pressed pellet both show that the sample does not appear to contain substantial impurity phases, but it turns out that the magnetic impurity peaks exhibit strong preferred orientation with respect to the pellet orientation, while the primary phase does not. We have been unable to observe any magnetic order that can be identified with the ruthenate-cuprate system., Comment: 7 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. B

We present inelastic neutron scattering data on highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+\delta} single crystals with superconducting transition temperature T_C=70 K and, for comparison, a nearly optimally doped crystal with T_C=87 K. In both samples, magnetic resonant modes with odd and even symmetry under exchange of the two CuO_2 layers in the unit cell are observed. In the overdoped sample, the linewidth of the odd mode is reduced compared with the optimally doped sample. This finding is discussed in conjunction with recent evidence for intrinsic inhomogeneities in this compound. The data on odd and even resonant excitations are otherwise fully consistent with trends established on the basis of data on YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}. This confirms the universality of these findings and extends them into the highly overdoped regime of the phase diagram., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy studies on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ suggest the presence of electronic inhomogeneity with a large spatial variation in gap size. Andersen {\it et al} have modelled this variation by assuming a spatially-varying pairing interaction. We show that their calculated specific heat is incompatible with the experimental data which exhibit narrow transitions. This calls into question the now-common assumption of gap and pairing inhomogeneity., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. B

Julien et al. have commented on two of our publications claiming that we have made erroneous interpretations of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) data. Specifically, they believe that their model of an extended staggered moment about a Zn impurity is the only interpretation of the data [Julien et al., Phys. Rev Lett. 84, 3422 (2000)]. Not only does their claim ignore models presented by other authors, we show that the model of Julien et al. [Phys. Rev Lett. 84, 3422 (2000)] does not consistently reproduce all of the NMR data., Comment: 16 pages in PDF format

Structural analysis of a layered manganese tungstate diaminoalkane hybrid series suggests that this compound forms a spin-5/2 spin-ladder structure. We use X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy results to infer the structure. DC magnetization of the manganese compound and a possible copper analogue appear to show that the manganese system behaves like 1-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains (i.e. $J_{\parallel} \gg J_{\perp})$ while the copper system is fitted well by a $S = {1/2}$ spin ladder model, giving the parameters $g = 1.920 \pm 0.008$, $J_{\parallel}/k_B = -0.3 \pm 1.4$K; $J_{\perp}/k_B = 213.6 \pm 1.1$K. The ability to tune adjacent inorganic layers of the hybrid materials by altering the length of the organic `spacer' molecules gives enormous promise for the use of these materials, especially when doped, to provide a greater understanding of spin ladder systems., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

An inelastic neutron scattering experiment has been performed in the high-temperature superconductor $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.89}$ to search for an oxygen-isotope shift of the well-known magnetic resonance mode at 41 meV. Contrary to a recent prediction (I. Eremin, {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 69}, 094517 (2004)), a negligible shift (at best $\leq$ +0.2 meV) of the resonance energy is observed upon oxygen isotope substitution ($^{16}$O$\to^{18}$O). This suggests a negligible spin-phonon interaction in the high-$T_c$ cuprates at optimal doping., Comment: 3 figures

Tungsten trioxide adopts a variety of structures which can be intercalated with charged species to alter the electronic properties, thus forming `tungsten bronzes'. Similar optical effects are observed upon removing oxygen from WO_3, although the electronic properties are slightly different. Here we present a computational study of cubic and hexagonal alkali bronzes and examine the effects on cell size and band structure as the size of the intercalated ion is increased. With the exception of hydrogen (which is predicted to be unstable as an intercalate), the behaviour of the bronzes are relatively consistent. NaWO_3 is the most stable of the cubic systems, although in the hexagonal system the larger ions are more stable. The band structures are identical, with the intercalated atom donating its single electron to the tungsten 5d valence band. Next, this was extended to a study of fractional doping in the Na_xWO_3 system (0 < x < 1). A linear variation in cell parameter, and a systematic change in the position of the Fermi level up into the valence band was observed with increasing x. In the underdoped WO_3-x system however, the Fermi level undergoes a sudden jump into the conduction band at around x = 0.2. Lastly, three compounds of a layered WO_4×a,wdiaminoalkane hybrid series were studied and found to be insulating, with features in the band structure similar to those of the parent WO_3 compound which relate well to experimental UV-visible spectroscopy results., Comment: 12 pages, 16 figures

The influence of magnetic Ni and non-magnetic Zn impurities on the normal state pseudogap (PG) in the c-axis optical conductivity of NdBa$_{2}$\{Cu$% _{1-y}$(Ni,Zn)$_{y}\}_{3}$O$_{7-\delta}$ crystals was studied by spectral ellipsometry. We find that these impurities which strongly suppress superconductivity have a profoundly different impact on the PG. Zn gives rise to a gradual and inhomogeneous PG suppression while Ni strongly enhances the PG. Our results challenge theories that relate the PG either to precursor superconductivity or to other phases with exotic order parameters, such as flux phase or d-density wave states, that should be suppressed by potential scattering. The apparent difference between magnetic and non-magnetic impurities instead points towards an important role of magnetic correlations in the PG state., Comment: 11 pages and 2 figures

A universal scaling relation, $\rho_s \propto \sigma(T_c)\times T_c$ has been reported by Homes $et$ $al$. (Nature (London) {\bf 430}, 539 (2004)) where $\rho_s$ is the superfluid density and $\sigma(T)$ is the DC conductivity. The relation was shown to apply to both c-axis and in-plane dynamics for high-$T_c$ superconductors as well as to the more conventional superconductors Nb and Pb, suggesting common physics in these systems. We show quantitatively that the scaling behavior has several possible origins including, marginal Fermi-liquid behavior, Josephson coupling, dirty-limit superconductivity and unitary impurity scattering for a d-wave order parameter. However, the relation breaks down seriously in overdoped cuprates, and possibly even at lower doping., Comment: Paper in press as Rapid Comm in Phys. Rev. The role of substantial in-plane disorder (Zn) on the transport and AC susceptibility of Y1-xCaxBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-delta was investigated over a wide range of planar hole concentration, p. Resistivity, r(T), for a number of overdoped to underdoped samples with y equals/greater than 0.055 showed clear downturns at a characteristic temperature similar to that found at T* in Zn-free underdoped samples because of the presence of the pseudogap. Contrary to the widely observed behavior for underdoped cuprates at lower Zn contents (where the pseudogap energy increases almost linearly with decreasing p in the same way as for the Zn-free compounds), this apparent pseudogap temperature at high Zn content showed very little or no p-dependence. It also increases systematically with increasing Zn concentration in the CuO2 planes. This anomalous behavior appears quite abruptly, e.g., samples with y less than/equals 0.05 exhibit the usual T*(p) behavior. AC susceptibility of these heavily disordered samples showed the superfluid density to be extremely low. Magneto-transport, r(T,H), measurements are provisionally interpreted in terms of high-strength pinning centers for vortices in these samples. We also discuss various possible scenarios that might lead to a Zn induced pseudogap in the cuprates.

Underdoped cuprates exhibit a normal-state pseudogap, and their spins and doped carriers tend to spatially separate into 1- or 2-D stripes. Some view these as central to superconductivity, others as peripheral and merely competing. Using La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu$_{1-y}$Zn$_y$O$_4$ we show that an oxygen isotope effect in $T_c$ and in the superfluid density can be used to distinguish between the roles of stripes and pseudogap and also to detect the presence of impurity scattering. Tungsten oxide-organic layered hybrid materials have been studied by infrared and Raman spectroscopy, and demonstrate a difference in bonding nature as the length of the interlayer organic `spacer' molecule is increased. Ethylenediamine-tungsten oxide clearly displays a lack of terminal -NH3+ ammonium groups which appear in hybrids with longer alkane molecules, thus indicating that the longer chains are bound by electrostatic interactions as well as or in place of the hydrogen bonding that must be present in the shorter chain ethylenediamine hybrids. The presence of organic molecules between the tungsten oxide layers, compared with the layered tungstic acid H2WO4, shows a decrease in the apical W=O bond strength, as might be expected from the aforementioned electrostatic interaction., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The effects of planar hole concentration, p, and magnetic field on the resistivity, rho(T), of high-quality c-axis oriented crystalline thin films and sintered Y1-xCaxBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-delta samples were investigated over a wide range of Ca, Zn, and oxygen contents. Zn was used to suppress superconductivity and this enabled us to extract the characteristic pseudogap temperature, T*(p) below Tc0(p) [ = Tc (x =0, y = 0)]. We have also located the characteristic temperature, Tscf, marking the onset of significant superconducting fluctuations above Tc, from the analysis of rho(T,H,p) and rho(T,p) data. This enabled us to identify T*(p) near the optimum doping level where the values of T*(p) and Tscf(p) are very close and hard to distinguish. We again found that T*(p) depends only on the hole concentration p, and not on the level of disorder associated with Zn or Ca substitutions. We conclude that (i) T*(p) (and therefore, the pseudogap) persists below Tc0(p) on the overdoped side and does not merge with the Tc0(p) line and (ii) T*(p) and the pseudogap energy extrapolate to zero at the doping p = 0.19 +/- 0.01., Comment: submitted to Phys.Rev.B, an updated version of cond-mat/0301375 with new data

We present results of a systematic study of the c axis lattice dynamics in single layer Bi2Sr2CuO6 (Bi2201), bilayer Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) and trilayer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi2223) cuprate superconductors. Our study is based on both experimental data obtained by spectral ellipsometry on single crystals and theoretical calculations. The calculations are carried out within the framework of a classical shell model, which includes long-range Coulomb interactions and short-range interactions of the Buckingham form in a system of polarizable ions. Using the same set of the shell model parameters for Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223, we calculate the frequencies of the Brillouin-zone center phonon modes of A2u symmetry and suggest the phonon mode eigenvector patterns. We achieve good agreement between the calculated A2u eigenfrequencies and the experimental values of the c axis TO phonon frequencies which allows us to make a reliable phonon mode assignment for all three Bi-based cuprate superconductors. We also present the results of our shell model calculations for the Gamma-point A1g symmetry modes in Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223 and suggest an assignment that is based on the published experimental Raman spectra. The superconductivity-induced phonon anomalies recently observed in the c axis infrared and resonant Raman scattering spectra in trilayer Bi2223 are consistently explained with the suggested assignment., Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures

We have studied the spin glass behaviour of non-superconducting La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu$_{0.95}$Zn$_{0.05}$O$_4$ ($x=0.10-0.22$). As in the superconducting analogues of these samples the spin glass transition temperature $T_g$ decreases with increasing $x$, and vanishes at $x=0.19$. A local enhancement in $T_g$ at $x=0.12$ is also observed and attributed to stripe ordering. We observe an anomalous oxygen isotope effect on the a-axis component of the far-infrared electronic response of detwinned YBa2Cu3$^{16,18}$O$_{6.9}$. For $^{18}$O a pronounced low-energy electronic mode (LEM) appears around 240 cm$^{-1}$. This a-axis LEM exhibits a clear aging effect, after one year it is shifted to 190 cm$^{-1}$. For $^{16}$O we cannot resolve a corresponding a-axis LEM above 120 cm$^{-1}$. We interpret the LEM in terms of a collective electronic mode that is pinned by `isotopic defects', i.e. by the residual $^{16}$O in the matrix of $^{18}$O., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

RuSr$_2$GdCu$_2$O$_8$, in which magnetic order and superconductivity coexist with $T_{Magnetic}$$\gg$$T_c$, is a complex material which poses new and important questions to our understanding of the interplay between magnetic and superconducting (SC) order. Resistivity, Hall effect and thermopower measurements on sintered ceramic RuSr$_2$GdCu$_2$O$_8$ are presented, together with results on a broad range of substituted analogues. The Hall effect and thermopower both show anomalous decreases below $T_{Magnetic}$ which may be explained within a simple two-band model by a transition from localized to more itinerant behavior in the RuO$_2$ layer at $T_{Magnetic}$., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Recent scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) studies on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ (Bi-2212) revealed the presence of severe inhomogeneity with length scale $L_0 \approx \xi_0$, the coherence length. Other studies have been interpreted in terms of mesoscale or nanoscale phase segregation. Here we analyze heat capacity and NMR data on Bi-2212 and (Y,Ca)Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ and find no evidence for phase segregation or gross inhomogeneity. For Bi-2212 the coherence scale $L_0$ increases with doping from 5 to 17$\xi_0$ and the hole density inhomogeneity decreases from 0.028 to 0.005 holes/Cu. The doping dependence of the superfluid density, r_s, of high-Tc superconductors is usually considered in the context of the Uemura relation, namely Tc proportional to rs, which is generally assumed to apply in the underdoped regime. We show that a modified plot of Tc/Do versus rs, where Do is the maximum d-wave gap at T=0, exhibits universal features that point to an alternative interpretation of the underlying physics. In the underdoped region this plot exhibits the canonical negative curvature expected when a ground-state correlation competes with superconductivity (SC) by opening up a gap in the normal-state DOS. The low-energy excitation spectrum of HTS cuprates is examined in the light of thermodynamic, transport, quasiparticle and spin properties. Changes in the thermodynamic spectrum associated with the normal-state pseudogap disappear abruptly at a critical doping state, $p_{crit}$ = 0.19 holes per Cu. Moreover, ARPES data at 100K show that heavily damped quasiparticles (QP) near ($\pi$,0) suddenly recover long lifetimes at $p_{crit}$, reflecting an abrupt loss of scattering from AF spin fluctuations. This picture is confirmed by $\mu$SR zero-field relaxation measurements which indicate the presence of a novel quantum glass transition at $p_{crit}$. Consistent with this picture resistivity studies on thin films of Y$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ reveal linear behavior confined to a V-shaped domain focussed on $p_{crit}$ at $T$=0. We study the spin fluctuations of pure and Zn-substituted high temperature superconductors (HTS) using the muon spin relaxation (muSR) technique. Superconductivity is found to coexist with low frequency spin fluctuations over a large region of the superconducting phase diagram. The characteristic temperature of spin fluctuations detected by muSR decreases with increasing doping and vanishes above a critical doping pc=0.19 where the normal state pseudogap vanishes. Furthermore, it is at pc that our penetration depth studies show an abrupt change in the doping dependence of the superfluid density. The effects of planar hole concentration, p, and in-plane disorder, Zn (y), on the DC resistivity, r(T), of sintered samples of Y_{1-x}Ca_xBa_2(Cu_{1-y}Zn_y)_3O_{7-d} were investigated over a wide doping range by changing both the oxygen deficiency (d) and Ca content (x). From the r(T,p) data we extracted characteristic crossover temperatures on the underdoped and overdoped sides, T* and T_m respectively, above which r(T) is linear. We compare our results with a number of other polycrystalline, thin film and single crystal cuprate superconductors and find similar behavior in the p-dependence of T*(p), T_m(p), and the resistivity exponent, m(p), in fits to r(T) = r_0 + aT^m on the overdoped side. We study the low-energy spin fluctuations and superfluid density of a series of pure and Zn-substituted high-$T_c$ superconductors (HTS) using the muon spin relaxation and $ac$-susceptibility techniques. At a critical doping state, $p_c$, we find (i) simultaneous abrupt changes in the magnetic spectrum in the superconducting ground state and (ii) that the slowing down of spin fluctuations becomes singular at T=0. We have measured the electronic specific heat of $Y_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$ using a high-resolution differential technique from liquid helium temperature to room temperature in an applied magnetic field up to 13T. The field dependence of the electronic specific heat at low temperatures in the superconducting state behaves differently in the overdoped and underdoped regimes, varing as $\sqrt{H}$ in the overdoped regime but as $H$ in the underdoped regime. An entropy loss is observed in the normal state in optimal and underdoped samples, which can be attributed to the opening of a normal state psuedogap. From the temperature and field dependences of the free energy, the temperature dependence of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ is determined. For the overdoped sample ($x=0.79$), we find $H_{c2}$ to have a negative curvature., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

The recent obervation of a Kondo-like temperature dependence in the Li NMR Knight shift in Ca- and Li- cosubstituted YBa2Cu3O7-d was attributed by Bobroff et al. to be evidence of Li-induced local moments in overdoped Y123. It is shown from Y-NMR measurements on Y0.8Ca0.2Ba2Cu3O7-d and heat capacity studies on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 that such a Kondo-like temperature dependence is an intrinsic overdoping effect quite generally present in cuprate superconductors which are free of strong scatterers such as Zn and Li. The doping dependence of the superconducting condensate density, n_{s}^{o}, has been studied by muon-spin-rotation for Y_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}Ba_{2}(Cu_{1-z}Zn_{z})_{3}O_{7-\delta} and Tl_{0.5-y}Pb_{0.5+y}Sr_{2}Ca_{1-x}Y_{x}Cu_{2}O_{7}. We find that n_{s}^{o} exhibits a pronounced peak at a unique doping state in the slightly overdoped regime. Its position coincides with the critical doping state where the normal state pseudogap first appears depleting the electronic density of states. A surprising correlation between n_{s}^{o} and the condensation energy U_{o} is observed which suggests unconventional behavior even in the overdoped region., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Underdoped high-Tc superconductors are frequently characterised by a temperature, T*, below which the normal-state pseudogap opens. Two different "phase diagrams" based on the doping (p) dependence of T* are currently considered: one where T* falls to zero at a critical doping state and the other where T* merges with Tc in the overdoped region. By examining the temperature dependence of the NMR Knight shift and relaxation rate, entropy, resistivity, infrared conductivity, Raman scattering, ARPES and tunnelling data it is concluded that the second scenario is not at all supported. Neither can one distinguish a small and a large pseudogap as is often done. Neutron diffraction has been used to study the magnetic order in RuSr{2}GdCu2O8. The Ru moments order antiferromagnetically at T{N}=136(2)K, coincident with the previously reported onset of ferromagnetism. Neighboring spins are antiparallel in all three directions, with a low T moment of 1.18(6) mu {B} along the c-axis. Our measurements put an upper limit of ~0.1 mu{B} to any net zero-field moment, with fields exceeding ~0.4T needed to induce a measurable magnetization. From magnetisation measurements we provide evidence that the ferromagnetic superconductor RuSr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ with \QTR{it}{T}$_{c}$=45 K and \QTR{it}{T}$_{M}$=137 K exhibits a sizeable diamagnetic signal at low temperature (\QTR{it}{T}<\QTR{it}{T}$^{\QTR{it}{ms}}$=30 K) and low magnetic field (\QTR{it}{H}$^{ext}$<30 Oe), corresponding to a bulk Meissner-phase. At intermediate temperatures, \QTR{it}{T}$^{\QTR{it}{ms}}$<\QTR{it}{T}<\QTR{it}{T}$_{c}$, a spontaneous vortex phase forms which is characterized by unique thermal hysteresis effects. We argue that a recent negative report [C.W.
