1. Comparison of local and global gyrokinetic calculations of collisionless zonal flow damping in quasi-symmetric stellarators

Abstract

The linear collisionless damping of zonal flows is calculated for quasi-symmetric stellarator equilibria in flux-tube, flux-surface, and full-volume geometry. Equilibria are studied from the quasi-helical symmetry configuration of the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX), a broken symmetry configuration of HSX, and the quasi-axial symmetry geometry of the National Compact Stellarator eXperiment (NCSX). Zonal flow oscillations and long-time damping affect the zonal flow evolution, and the zonal flow residual goes to zero for small radial wavenumber. The oscillation frequency and damping rate depend on the bounce-averaged radial particle drift in accordance with theory. While each flux tube on a flux surface is unique, several different flux tubes in HSX or NCSX can reproduce the zonal flow damping from a flux-surface calculation given an adequate parallel extent. The flux-surface or flux-tube calculations can accurately reproduce the full-volume long-time residual for moderate $k_x$, but the oscillation and damping time scales are longer in local representations, particularly for small $k_x$ approaching the system size., Comment: The following article has been accepted by Physics of Plasmas. Abstract

This document is the product of a stellarator community workshop, organized by the National Stellarator Coordinating Committee and referred to as Stellcon, that was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts in February 2016, hosted by MIT. The workshop was widely advertised, and was attended by 40 scientists from 12 different institutions including national labs, universities and private industry, as well as a representative from the Department of Energy. The final section of this document describes areas of community wide consensus that were developed as a result of the discussions held at that workshop. Areas where further study would be helpful to generate a consensus path forward for the US stellarator program are also discussed. The program outlined in this document is directly responsive to many of the strategic priorities of FES as articulated in “Fusion Energy Sciences: A Ten-Year Perspective (2015–2025)” [1]. The natural disruption immunity of the stellarator directly addresses “Elimination of transient events that can be deleterious to toroidal fusion plasma confinement devices” an area of critical importance for the US fusion energy sciences enterprise over the next decade. Another critical area of research “Strengthening our partnerships with international research facilities,” is being significantly advanced on the W7-X stellarator in Germany and serves as a test-bed for development of successful international collaboration on ITER. This report also outlines how materials science as it relates to plasma and fusion sciences, another critical research area, can be carried out effectively in a stellarator. Additionally, significant advances along two of the Research Directions outlined in the report; “Burning Plasma Science: Foundations—Next-generation research capabilities”, and “Burning Plasma Science: Long pulse—Sustainment of Long-Pulse Plasma Equilibria” are proposed.

Abstract

While many books and articles are emerging on the new area of game studies and the application of computer games to learning, therapeutic, military and entertainment environments, few have attempted to contextualize the importance of virtual play within a broader social, cultural and political environment that raises the question of the significance of work, play, power and inequalities in the modern world. Many studies tend to concentrate on the content of virtual games, but few have questioned how power is produced or reproduced by publishers, gamers or even social media; how social exclusion (e.g., race, class, gender, etc.) in the virtual environments are reproduced from the real world; and how actors are able to use new media to transcend their fears, anxieties, prejudices and assumptions. The articles presented by the contributors in this volume represent cutting-edge research in the area of critical game play with the hope to draw attention to the need for more studies that are both sociological and critical.

Abstract

Few books have attempted to contextualize the importance of video game play with a critical social, cultural and political perspective that raises the question of the significance of work, pleasure, fantasy and play in the modern world. The study of why video game play is'fun'has often been relegated to psychology, or the disciplines of cultural anthropology, literary and media studies, communications and other assorted humanistic and social science disciplines. In Utopic Dreams and Apocalyptic Fantasies, Talmadge Wright, David Embrick and Andras Lukacs invites us to move further and consider questions on appropriate methods of researching games, understanding the carnival quality of modern life, the role of marketing in altering game narratives, and the role of fantasy and desire in modern video game play. Embracing an approach that combines a cultural and/or critical studies approach with a sociological understanding of this new media moves the debate beyond simple media effects, moral panics, and industry boosterism to one of asking critical questions, what does modern video game play'mean,'what questions should we be asking, and what can sociological research contribute to answering these questions. This collection includes works which use textual analysis, audience based research, symbolic interactionism, as well as political economic and psychoanalytic perspectives to illuminate areas of inquiry that preserves the pleasure of modern play while asking tough questions about what such pleasure means in a world divided by political, economic, cultural and social inequalities.

Abstract

A series of cancer vaccines have been evaluated in clinical trials with encouraging results, but the demonstration of clinical benefit in confirmatory studies has so far proven to be difficult. The development of cancer vaccines is hampered by a range of issues particular to this field of research. On 12th March 2008, the Biotherapy Development Association convened a workshop to discuss issues faced by scientists and clinicians involved in the development of cancer vaccines. This paper is a review of the field, based on discussions held at the BDA workshop, and describes biological barriers encountered in generating effective immune responses to tumours, methodological obstacles encountered in the improvement of immunological monitoring which aims to improve inter-laboratory and inter-trial comparisons, challenges in clinical trial design and problems posed by the lack of specific regulation for cancer vaccines and the impact on their development. Ultimately, a number of general solutions are posed: (1) better patient selection, (2) use of multi-modal treatments that affect several aspects of the immune system at once, (3) a requirement for the development of good biomarkers to stratify patients for selection prior to trial and as surrogates for clinical response and (4) harmonisation of SOPs for immunological monitoring of clinical trials.

Abstract

International collaboration on development of a stellarator confinement database has progressed. More than 3000 data points from nine major stellarator experiments have been compiled. Robust dependences of the energy confinement time on the density and the heating power have been confirmed. Dependences on other operational parameters, i.e. the major and minor radii, magnetic field and the rotational transform , have been evaluated using inter-machine analyses. In order to express the energy confinement in a unified scaling law, systematic differences in each subgroup are quantified. An a posteriori approach using a confinement enhancement factor on ISS95 as a renormalizing configuration- dependent parameter yields a new scaling expression ISS04; . Gyro-Bohm characteristic similar to ISS95 has been confirmed for the extended database with a wider range of plasma parameters and magnetic configurations than in the study of ISS95. It has also been discovered that there is a systematic offset of energy confinement between magnetic configurations, and its measure correlates with the effective helical ripple of the external stellarator field.
