In this Letter, we address the longstanding challenge of how to reconstruct links in directed networks from measurements, and present a general method that makes use of a noise-induced relation between network structure and both the time-lagged covariance of measurements taken at two different times and the covariance of measurements taken at the same time. For coupling functions that have additional properties, we can further reconstruct the weights of the links.

Axions differ from the other cold dark matter candidates in that they form a degenerate Bose gas. It is shown that their huge quantum degeneracy and large correlation length cause cold dark matter axions to thermalize through gravitational self-interactions when the photon temperature reaches approximately 500 eV. When they thermalize, the axions form a Bose-Einstein condensate. Their thermalization occurs in a regime, herein called the `condensed regime', where the Boltzmann equation is not valid because the energy dispersion of the particles is smaller than their interaction rate. We derive analytical expressions for the thermalization rate of particles in the condensed regime, and check the validity of these expressions by numerical simulation of a toy model. We revisit axion cosmology in light of axion Bose-Einstein condensation. It is shown that axions are indistinguishable from ordinary cold dark matter on all scales of observational interest, except when they thermalize or rethermalize. The rethermalization of axions that are about to fall in a galactic potential well causes them to acquire net overall rotation as they go to the lowest energy state consistent with the total angular momentum they acquired by tidal torquing. This phenomenon explains the occurrence of caustic rings of dark matter in galactic halos. Cosmic ray protons propagating in a spatially-homogeneous but time-dependent field of axions or axion-like particles (ALPs) emit photons in a way that is reminiscent of Cherenkov radiation by charged particles in a preferred background. We compute the emission rate and energy spectrum of the photons, and discuss the possibility of their detection using the Square Kilometre Array which is currently under construction. In the case of a non-detection, constraints can be placed on the parameter space of ALPs whose mass lie between $10^{-7}$eV and $10^{-5}$ eV under the assumption that they are the primary constituent of dark matter., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We propose an interferometry experiment for the detection of axion-like particles (ALPs). As in ordinary photon-regeneration (light shining through a wall) experiments, a laser beam traverses a region permeated by a magnetic field, where photons are converted to ALPs via the Primakoff process, resulting in a slight power loss and phase shift. The beam is then combined with a reference beam that originates from the same source. The detection of a change in the output intensity would signal the presence of ALPs (or possibly other particles that couple to the photon in a similar way). Because only one stage of conversion is needed, the signal is of ${\cal O}(g^2_{a\gamma \gamma})$, as opposed to ${\cal O}(g^4_{a\gamma \gamma})$ for photon-regeneration experiments, where $g_{a\gamma \gamma}$ is the coupling between ALPs and photons. This improvement over photon-regeneration is nullified by the presence of shot noise, which however can be reduced by the use of squeezed light, resulting in an improvement in the sensitivity to $g_{a\gamma\gamma}$ over ordinary photon-regeneration experiments by an order of $10^{1/2}$ assuming $10{\rm dB}$ noise suppression. Additionally, our setup can incorporate straightforwardly optical delay lines or Fabry-Perot cavities, boosting the signal by a factor of $n\sim10^3$, where $n$ is the number of times the laser beam is folded. This way, we can constrain $g_{a\gamma\gamma}$ better by yet another factor of $n^{1/2}\sim 10^{1.5}$, as compared to the $n^{1/4}$ boost that would be achieved in photon-regeneration experiments., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure. We observe that photon cooling after big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) but before recombination can remove the conflict between the observed and theoretically predicted value of the primordial abundance of $^7$Li. Such cooling is ordinarily difficult to achieve. However, the recent realization that dark matter axions form a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) provides a possible mechanism, because the much colder axions may reach thermal contact with the photons. We report on the experimental observation of induced solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber ring laser with birefringence cavity. Due to the cross coupling between the two orthogonal polarization components of the laser, it was found that if a soliton was formed along one cavity polarization axis, a weak soliton was also induced along the orthogonal polarization axis, and depending on the net cavity birefringence, the induced soliton could either have the same or different center wavelengths to that of the inducing soliton. Moreover, the induced soliton always had the same group velocity as that of the inducing soliton. They form a vector soliton in the cavity. Numerical simulations confirmed the experimental observations.
