TEMPERATURA ACQUA DI MARE ,EMISSIONI ,CTD - Abstract

- Abstract
The paper aims to describe the setting up of a new sampling method for the collection of condensable PM from small heating appliances fed with wood fuels. The method is based on dilution mechanism, which takes part in a reaction chamber. The paper describes the evolution of the dilution chamber design to join the final aim to collect condensed PM. The modification of the component was decided according to three experimental tests campaigns, which make possible to verify the good operating conditions of the built sampling train prototype and to compare the PM measured with the new method with PM collected by a reference sampling method for primary PM collection. Innovhub and ENEA are working to the new dilution system to measure condensable PM in the framework of IMPRESS II, a project funded by EMPIR initiative.

- Abstract
We report evidences of active seabed doming and gas discharge few kilometers offshore from the Naples harbor (Italy). Pockmarks, mounds, and craters characterize the seabed. These morphologies represent the top of shallow crustal structures including pagodas, faults and folds affecting the present-day seabed. They record upraise, pressurization, and release of He and CO2 from mantle melts and decarbonation reactions of crustal rocks. These gases are likely similar to those that feed the hydrothermal systems of the Ischia, Campi Flegrei and Somma-Vesuvius active volcanoes, suggesting the occurrence of a mantle source variously mixed to crustal fluids beneath the Gulf of Naples. The seafloor swelling and breaching by gas upraising and pressurization processes require overpressures in the order of 2-3 MPa. Seabed doming, faulting, and gas discharge are manifestations of non-volcanic unrests potentially preluding submarine eruptions and/or hydrothermal explosions.

Settore GEO/02 - Geologia Stratigrafica E Sedimentologica ,sea level change, contourites, submarine valley, Egadi islands, Quaternary - Abstract
During the past decades a number of sequence stratigraphy studies illustrated how, during Quaternary, interaction between sea level changes and sediment supply controlled the depositional evolution along continental margins, giving a cyclic signature to the sedimentary infilling. However, as both deposition and erosion are processes ultimately controlled by balance between environmental energy and sedimentary influx, also the oceanographic regime takes part in controlling the sedimentary growth along the continental margin. This is exactly what occurs on physiographic settings as islands offshore areas, where bottom currents can be very energetic. In the western Sicily offshore, southwards of Egadi Islands, the sea floor is characterized by depositional and erosional features formed under a variety of sedimentary processes and offers opportunity to investigate as sea level change and oceanographic regime combine each other to control depositional evolution. In this area, located along the clockwise flow of the Levantine Intermediate Water around the western Sicily margin, the sea floor morphology is very irregular as consequence of isolated reliefs and narrow submarine valleys, such as the Marettimo Valley which separates Favignana and Marettimo islands. We analysed and interpreted a grid of high-resolution (1 kJ Sparker) seismic reflection profiles integrated with multibeam bathy-morphologic data of selected areas; a 270 cm long gravity core has been also collected for sedimentology and biostratigraphy. The sedimentary succession accommodated along the eastern flank of the Marettimo Valley shows two different seismic units: unit A displays reflection-free seismic facies and thin, low- amplitude, inclined reflectors with downlap terminations onto the lower boundary, and erosional truncation at the upper boundary; these seismic facies are referable to oblique-tangential clinoforms and show a wedge-shaped external geometry. Unit B shows continuous, parallel, slightly concave reflectors and, towards the central sector of the Valley, continuous, sub-horizontal reflectors that form a deposit having a very broad low-mounded geometry; lateral transition in between concave and sub-horizontal reflectors is characterized by channelized erosional truncations. The two seismic units can be interpreted as the sedimentary response of different depositional processes: unit A accumulated by progradation of shallow-water deposits during eustatic forced-regression; unit B is referable to contourite drifts deposited by bottom currents through the Marettimo Valley. This unusual interbedding of very shallow water contouritic and shelf margin deposits derives from enhanced sedimentary dynamics during sea-level fall and lowstand stages when, as consequence of decreased water depth of the Marettimo Valley, bottom currents accelerated scouring channelized erosional surfaces; in the same time, deposition of forced regression across the shelf margin buried contourite drifts.

- Abstract
Modern technologies in the field of marine geophysical surveys allow us to obtain accurate and detailed information on the characteristics of the seabed and the marine substrate. In this paper we present a new magnetic high-resolution map of the Somma-Vesuvius offshore (Gulf of Naples, Southern Italy) depicting some main volcanological and tectonic structures of the area. The analysis of a new marine magnetic dataset, acquired during the oceanographic survey “SAFE_2014”, highlighted the presence of a group of NNW-SSE trending anomalies. This magnetic alignment suggests a volcano-structural correlation with the major faults in the area. We was also identified a NE-SW trend of magnetic anomalies, which may be associated with a tectonic structures interpreted as a magma preferential path of Somma-Vesuvius. Furthermore morphological irregularities of the seabed, shown by new morpho-bathymetric data, were found in correspondence with some of the main magnetic anomalies of Vesuvius offshore. This confirms the hypothesis of a possible connection between the Vesuvian volcanic structures and the tectonic regime of the Gulf of Naples, which controls this region since the Neogene-Quaternary.

Thermal storage ,Honeycomb solid matrix ,High temperature - Abstract
An investigation on honeycomb solid matrix systems employed for high temperature thermal storage is provided numerically considering two models in the transient regime. The two models are related to a direct model with multiple channels and a porous medium model. The system with parallel squared section channels is described by a conjugated convective-conductive model by coupling the governing equations for fluid and solid matrix. The porous medium is modeled by assuming a Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy model and the LTNE is assumed. The models for different number of parallel squared channels or pores per unit of length (PPU) are considered. The honeycomb system is considered as an anisotropic porous medium, and assuming that the thermal storage system is adiabatic in order to estimate fluid dynamic and thermal characteristics for different PPU values. The Ansys-Fluent code is used to solve numerically the governing equations for both models. Results in terms of solid and fluid temperature profiles are given for different PPU values and for both models; they show that the two models are in very good agreement. The main consequence is that a honeycomb system can be simulated as a porous medium allowing a simpler numerical simulation also for parallel channel systems with high PPU. It is found that for high PPU systems the charging time decreases and for assigned partial charging time an increase in stored thermal energy is detected increasing the PPU value. © 2015 by Begell House, Inc.

This Report intends to estimate the total number of people still alive in 2010 after cancer diagnosis in Italy, regardless of the time since diagnosis, and to project these estimates to 2015. This study is also aimed to estimate the number of already cured cancer patients, whose mortality rates have become undistinguishable from that of the general population of the same age and sex.The study took advantage of the information from the AIRTUM database, which included 29 Cancer Registries (covering 21 million people, 35% of the Italian population). A total of 1,624,533 cancer cases diagnosed between 1976 and 2009 contributed to the study. For each registry, the observed prevalence was calculated. Prevalence for lengths of time exceeding the maximum duration of the registration and of the complete prevalence were derived by applying an estimated correction factor, the completeness index. This index was estimated by means of statistical regression models using cancer incidence and survival data available in registries with 18 years of observation or more. For 50 types or combinations of neoplasms, complete prevalence was estimated at 1.1.2010 as an absolute number and as a proportion per 100,000 inhabitants by sex, age group, area of residence, and years since diagnosis. Projections of complete prevalence for 1.1.2015 were computed under the assumption of a linear trend of the complete prevalence observed until 2010. Validated mixture cure models were used to estimate: the cure fraction, that is the proportion of patients who, starting from the time of diagnosis, are expected to reach the same mortality rate of the general population; the conditional relative survival (CRS), that is the cumulative probability of surviving some additional years, given that patients already survived a certain number of years; the time to cure, that is the number of years necessary so that conditional survival in the following five years (5-year CRS) exceeds the conventional threshold of 95% (i.e., mortality rates in cancer patients become undistinguishable compared to those of the general population); the proportion of patients already cured, i.e., people alive since a number of years exceeding time to cure.As of 1.1.2010, it was estimated that 2,587,347 people were alive after a cancer diagnosis, corresponding to 4.4% of the Italian population. A relevant geographical heterogeneity emerged, with a prevalence above 5% in northern registries and below 4% in southern areas. Men were 45% of the total (1,154,289) and women 55% (1,433,058). In the population aged 75 years or more, the proportions of prevalent cases were 20% in males and 13% in females, 11% between 60 and 74 years of age in both sexes. Nearly 600,000 Italian women were alive after a breast cancer diagnosis (41% of all women with this neoplasm), followed by women with cancers of the colon rectum (12%), corpus uteri (7%), and thyroid (6%). In men, 26% of prevalent cases (295,624) were patients with prostate cancer, 16% with either bladder or colon rectum cancer. The projections for 1.1.2015 are of three million (3,036,741) people alive after a cancer diagnosis, 4.9% of the Italian population; with a 20% increase for males and 15% for females, compared to 2010. The cure fractions were heterogeneous according to cancer type and age. Estimates obtained as the sum of cure fractions for all cancer types showed that more than 60% of patients diagnosed below the age of 45 years will reach the same mortality rate of the general population. This proportion decreased with increasing age and it was30% for cancer diagnosed after the age of 74 years. It was observed that 60% of all prevalent cases (1,543,531 people or 2.6% of overall Italian population) had been diagnosed5 years earlier (long-term survivors). Time to cure (5-year CRS95%) was reached in10 years by patients with cancers of the stomach, colon rectum, pancreas, corpus and cervix uteri, brain, and Hodgkin lymphoma. Mortality rates similar to the ones reported by the general population were reached after approximately 20 years for breast and prostate cancer patients. Five-year CRS remained95% for25 years after cancer diagnosis in patients with liver and larynx cancers, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma, and leukaemia. Time to cure was reached by 27% (20% in men and 33% in women) of all people living after a cancer diagnosis, defined as already cured. The study showed a steady increase over time (nearly +3% per year) of prevalent cases in Italy. A quarter of Italian cancer patients alive in 2010 can be considered as already cured. The AIRTUM Report 2014 describes characteristics of cancer patients and former-patients for 50 cancer types or combinations by sex and age. This detailed information promotes the conduction of studies aimed at expanding the current knowledge on the quality of life of these patients during and after the active phase of treatments (prevalence according to health status), on the long-term effects of treatments (in particular for paediatric patients), on the cost profile of cancer patients, and on rare tumours. All these observations have a high potential impact on health planning, clinical practice, and, most of all, patients' perspective.

An integrated marine geophysics and satellite remote sensing study of Naples Bay (Italy) has been carried out to evaluate the presence, magnitude, areal extent and activity of the Naples Active Deformation Line (NADEL), a structural bend affecting the post Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) sedimentary sequences. Sparker high-resolution mono-channel profiles and multibeam swath bathymetric data were acquired during the SAFE-2014 research cruise, carried out on board of the Urania R/V of CNR on August 2014. The marine geophysical study was integrated with the ground deformation field of the emerged sectors of the study area (Sorrento Peninsula and Campi Flegrei), derived by Synthetic Aperture Radar interferometry (InSAR) data, referred to the 1993-2000 and 2003-2010 time periods. The InSAR data obtained from the ERS, RADARSAT and ENVISAT images were processed with the method of Permanent Scatterers (PS). Marine geophysical data provide evidence of morphological and stratigraphic features extending for about 18 km along a N130E strike. The NADEL deformation bend divides a NE offshore area, characterized by a flat morphology (slope< 1°, on average) from a SW sector, where the slope at >180 m below the sea level is, on average, 1.5°). In the area located SW of NADEL, the slopes are morphologically characterized by the presence of the uppermost active branches of the Magnaghi canyon, which are bounded upward by the presence of the NADEL pattern. Thus, we suppose that the emplacement of the Magnaghi branches and NADEL are linked. InSAR data show that a similar deformation pattern can be detected also inland, in the distal sectors located NW and SE from the NADEL edges. The NADEL segments also affect the distal SW sector of the Campi Flegrei active caldera and the carbonate units cropping out in the Sorrento Peninsula, thus extending in length for more than 40 km.

Volcanic vents <19ka in Somma-Vesuvius offshore ,High-resolution magnetic and seismic marine data - Abstract
We analyzed new magnetic, bathymetric, and seismic data acquired in the offshore sector of Somma-Vesuvius volcano (Italy). We detected a group of high-intensity, short wavelength magnetic anomalies corresponding to partly buried volcanic dome-like structures located by seismic data. The magnetic anomalies are aligned along a NW-SE strike that is the preferential orientation of an eruptive fracture of the pre-19ka activity of Vesuvius. Three cones emplaced before the Last Glacial Maximum, whereas a fourth one emplaced after 19ka suggesting a rejuvenation of the eruptive system offshore the volcano in historical times. We also identified a NE-SW elongated magnetic anomaly consistent with a dike-like body associated to an on-land tectonic structure that was active in recent times at Vesuvius. A delta-like area with diffuse low-intensity magnetic anomalies reflects the seaward fronts of lava flows that entered the sea mainly during the Middle Ages.

The 5 km wide Banco della Montagna (BdM) morphological high is located on the seafloor of Naples Bay (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) and is characterized by a hummocky surface. Oceanographic surveys revealed active fluid vents at BdM. High-resolution mono-channel seismic and multibeam bathymetry allow us to define the detailed morphology and the inner geometry of BdM, which consists of a complex set of dome-like structures (pagodas) affecting the present-day seabed. We suggest that a gas-water-sand sediment mixture upraises from a gas saturated layer pushing up the overlying marine deposits and forming mounds, folds, and faults. According to a thin-plate elastic model, we estimate the fluid (gas) pressure Pdef required to form BdM and obtain Pdef = 0.3 Pa, a value consistent with that for doming processes in gas-hydrate settings. At BdM, the pressure ?P required to break the seabed is in the order of 2-3 MPa, while the gas column height is about 240 m.

- Abstract
We present morphological and stratigraphic results coming from surveys acquired in a NNW-SSE trending submarine depression (Marettimo Valley) located in the Egadi Islands (western Sicily offshore). In this area the seafloor is characterized by both depositional and erosional features generated under a variety of sedimentary processes. We identified two seismic facies units that are correlatable to: A) the progradation of shallow water (coastal to offshore) deposits during forced-regression sedimentary process, and B) contourite drifts emplaced by geostrophic currents through the Marettimo Valley. This unusual association of very shallow water contourites and shelf margin deposits originates, during middle-late Pleistocene glacio-eustatic cycles, from enhanced sedimentary dynamics establishing mutual interaction between progradational growth of the margin and bottom current deposition

ODP ,Pantelleria Island ,tephrostratigraphy - Abstract
A detailed tephrochronological study was carried out on the deep-sea core collected from Site 963A in the Sicily Channel during ODP Leg 160. The chronology of the succession is provided by an age–depth model based on isotope stratigraphy and quantitative eco-biostratigraphy. Major, trace and rare earth element content was obtained on single glass grains through electron probe micro-analysis and laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry techniques from six well-preserved tephra layers, characterized by a discrete thickness found along the succession. These deposits were correlated with the volcanic activity of Pantelleria and dated at 42.5, 127.5, 128.1, 129.1, 188.7 and 197.7 ka. This detailed chemical characterization of the studied deposits aims to provide a valuable reference database for scientists working on both proximal and distal products erupted at Pantelleria island during the Late Pleistocene. This study, moreover, offers the opportunity to better identify Pantelleria-related marker tephras within the tephrochronological framework of the central and eastern Mediterranean area.

Mondragone ,Thermo-mineral groundwater ,Italy ,geothermal energy ,carbonate rocks - Abstract
This paper deals with thermo-mineral groundwater of the Mondragone plain (Campania, southern Italy) and the possibility of exploitation of this low enthalpy geothermal resource. In the NW sector of this plain, at the bottom of Mt. Pizzuto, near the sea, there are thermo-mineral waters of sodium-chloride type, sulfureous and rich in CO2 whose recharge is from the Mt. Pizzuto groundwater body which somehow floating on seawater. In the SE sector of the plain, close to the calcareous Mt. Petrino, a 80 m deep well has intercepted, in the carbonate basement of the plain, thermo-mineral groundwater, sulfureous and rich in CO2, as in the NW sector, but displaying a calcium-bicarbonate composition. The chemical and the isotopic analyses allowed to verify that these types of groundwater are due both to meteoric waters infiltration and to enrichment of endogenous CO2 and H2S, at fairly high temperature. In the case of Mt. Pizzuto, the upwelling gas intercepts evaporitic formation and, probably, causes saltwater intrusion, with a peak from June to September. In the case of the Petrinum well, the gases involve "saline formation groundwater", affecting upwards the groundwater body of Mt. Petrino. Moreover, the rising of the gases increases the dissolution of the carbonate aquifer, determining very high values of HCO3 ions in the thermo-mineral groundwater. The upwelling of the gases occurs along the major fault that crosses NE-SW the plain of Mondragone at the southern edge of the Mt. Petrino. Finally, the understanding of the mineralization patterns allowed to identify in the plain the best location for a geothermal exploration well.

In this paper a three dimensional conductive field in a semi-infinite solid with finite thickness and width heated by a moving laser source is numerically studied. In the numerical model convective heat losses through the surface are taking into account. Thermal properties are considered temperature dependent and the materials are considered isotropic. The considered laser source is a linear combination of Gaussian and donut distribution and it moves with a constant velocity along motion direction. The simulation model is solved by means of the COMSOL Multiphysics code. Results in terms of temperature profiles as a function of time are given for Peclet equal to 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 and several Biot number values. Three heat source distributions are examined Gaussian, donut and a donut-Gaussian. It is observed that different behaviours are detected between the Gaussian and donut distributions whereas the combined donut-Gaussian and Gaussian distributions present similar qualitative. © 2010 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. Several "target areas" (each one of 20 km2 ) were selected in Southern Italy for geothermal exploration in the frame of Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) and National Research Council (CNR) joint project: Evaluation of Geothermal Potential in Convergence Regions, (VIGOR) founded by POI Programme 2007-2013. In Campania region a selected area is located between the Mondragone town and the southwestern side of Mt Massico, an horst structure constituted by carbonate and terrigenous sediments. In the selected area there are two thermal springs Sinuessae (SN) known since roman time and "S. Maria dell' Incaldana" (SMI). The characteristic of the two springs are for the first one a discharge of 1-2 L/sec and a T of ~ 54°C and for the second one a low discharge increased by wells until 10 L/s, and T of ~ 33 °C The hydrogeochemical analysis of SN and SMI springs show differences in salt concentration, gas and isotope content, which allows to hypothesize different marine influence and hydrographic system. The origin of these two thermal springs is probably related to faults as a preferential pathway for fluid and gas, like in other geothermal areas of southern Italy. The VIGOR geothermal exploration includes detailed geological and geophysical surveys, hydrogeological investigations and explorative wells. Peculiarly, deep hydrogeological investigations (hydrochemical and isotopic characteristics of groundwater plain and its piezometric pattern, permeability features of the springs area and quantification of groundwater resources) have been developed in order to find the most suitable area to drill a geothermal well.
