Introduction: Kinesiophobia and lymphedema appear to be related conditions, and it is important to understand this relationship, as many of the symptoms and comorbidities presented by individuals with lower limb lymphedema are prevented and treated through movement, thus constituting kinesiophobia as a barrier to intervention. The objective of this study is, therefore, to evaluate and analyze the kinesiophobic beliefs reported by individuals with and without lower limb lymphedema, regarding the agreement, severity and differences found, and to establish levels of kinesiophobia. Methods: A case-control study with a total sample of 80 participants (40 with lower limb lymphedema and 40 without) was performed. Both groups (with and without lymphedema) were characterized anthropologically, sociodemographically, and clinically. In the case group, lymphedema was evaluated. Participants in both groups completed the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia - 13 items (TSK-13). Results: Individuals with lower limb lymphedema had higher TSK-13 scores than their matched group without lymphedema. The items belonging to the activity avoidance subscale had the highest agreement and score in both groups. Differences between groups were mainly established for items belonging to the somatic focus subscale, showing that individuals with lower limb lymphedema have kinesiophobic beliefs related to the perceived severity of their lymphedema. The prevalence of kinesiophobia was increased in both groups, but the severity was mild. Conclusions: Considering the apparent tendency of people with lower limb lymphedema to present kinesiophobia and movement-limiting beliefs regarding the condition, greater attention should be paid to its assessment, prevention and treatment from a multidisciplinary and multimodal perspective, which takes into account the multiplicity of factors inherent to kinesiophobia and lymphedema and thus reduce their impact on the management of lymphedema. Purpose: Psychosocial interventions have shown potential in reducing the fear of re-injury after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), but this has not been systematically reviewed. The aim of this study was to assess the available evidence on the effect of psychosocial interventions on kinesiophobia after ACLR. Methods: Two independent researchers conducted a systematic search in the electronic databases including Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science (WOS), SPORTDiscus, PsycINFO, and CINAHL from their inception until May 2022. They included studies that utilised a randomised controlled study design with a control group, and measured kinesiophobia using the Tampa Scale for kinesiophobia in patients who underwent primary ACLR. The outcome of interest was the mean and standard deviation of kinesiophobia. Extracted data were analysed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software, version 3.0 (CMA.V2), employing a random-effects model to calculate the overall effect estimates of psychosocial interventions on Kinesiophobia. The standardised mean difference with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) was computed based on the mean and standard deviation in each group. Results: This systematic review and meta-analysis included 5 randomised controlled trials with a total of 213 patients who underwent ACLR. The results of the meta-analysis showed that psychosocial intervention was more effective than non-psychosocial comparators in reducing kinesiophobia among patients who underwent a primary ACLR (5 trials, MD 0.56, 95% CI 0.28–0.83, p < 0.001). The heterogeneity score was zero (I2 = 0%; n.s. for Cochran's Q test), indicating no significant variation among the studies. Conclusions: Psychosocial interventions can alleviate kinesiophobia in patients with primary ACLR. Although the limited number of reviewed studies and their methodological limitations precludes drawing a definitive conclusion regarding the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions on kinesiophobia, these promising findings can serve as a basis for developing psychological strategies to manage kinesiophobia in patients with primary ACLR and can also guide future research this issue. This study aimed to determine whether fear of movement, evaluated by the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK)-11, and pain catastrophizing, evaluated by the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), were associated with quality of life (QOL) in patients with hip OA. High pain catastrophizing, pain intensity, and high kinesiophobia were independently correlated with the general QOL scale. Conclusions High pain catastrophizing (PCS ≥ 30) was independently associated with disease and general QOL scales. High kinesiophobia (TSK-11 ≥ 25) was independently associated with the general QOL scale in preoperative patients with severe hip OA.

The objective of our study was to simultaneously reduce the French versions of the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) and Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK) questionnaires to enable their use in an ambulatory and clinical settings.Patients and Methods: We conducted a clinical study between May 2014 and August 2020 in our rehabilitation center. 1428 chronic musculoskeletal pain patients (CMSP) were included. The originality of our approach is that the reduction method included qualitative as well as quantitative analyses. The study was divided into two parts: 1) reduction of the questionnaires (n=1363) based on internal consistency (item-to-total correlation), principal component analysis (item loadings), Rasch analysis (infit/outfit), floor and ceiling effect (quantitative analyses) and expert judgment of items (qualitative analysis), and 2) validation of the reduced questionnaires (n=65), including test–retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]), homogeneity (Cronbach α), criterion validity (Pearson correlation [r] with the long-version score), determination of the pathological cutoff and Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID). The two full-length questionnaires include 30 items in total.Results: The reduction resulted in a 5-item PCS (score 0– 20) and 6-item TSK (score 0– 24). Psychometric properties of the reduced questionnaires were all acceptable as compared with other version (α=0.89 and 0.71, ICC=0.75 and 0.60, r=0.86 and 0.70, MCID=2 and 2 for PCS and TSK, respectively) while keeping the structure and coherence of the long versions.Conclusion: The two reduced versions of the PCS and TSK can be used in CMSP patient. Introduction: Some accurate tools exist to assess fear-avoidance behavior, such as the Tampa scale for kinesiophobia (TSK) in individuals with musculoskeletal problems. The current research aims to compare the psychometric characteristics of the original 17-items TSK questionnaire and its 11-item brief version in chronic non-specific low-back pain (CNSLBP). Materials and Methods: In this test development study, 295 patients with CNSLBP referred to the physiotherapy clinic of Milad Hospital in Tehran city, Iran were evaluated. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and α Cronbach was conducted to assess the validity and reliability of the original and brief version of the TSK, respectively. For goodness-of-fit, the Χ²/df, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), goodness-of-fit index (GFI), and comparative fit index (CFI) indices were used. Results: Internal consistency specified by Cronbach's α was 0.949 for the original version of the questionnaire and 0.927 for the brief one. Based on the CFA findings, the goodness-of-fit indices for the brief version were GFI=0.921, RMSEA=0.078 (90% confidence interval (CI), 0.062%-0.094%), comparative fit index (CFI)=0.981, and Χ²/df=2.791. These indices for the original one were 0.882, 0.066 (90% CI, 0.055%-0.076%), 0.983, and 2.270, respectively. A significant correlation was found between these two versions (P<0.001). These findings confirm the adequacy of the brief version of the TSK. Conclusion: The brief version of TSK can be considered a reliable and valid tool to evaluate somatic focus and activity avoidance in patients with CNSLBP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to identify the effectiveness of Mulligan's movement with mobilization and Muscle energy techniques on pain and functional disability in students with Sacro Iliac joint dysfunction. METHODOLOGY: This randomized control trial was conducted on college students with sacroiliac joint dysfunction recruited from KMCH Institute of paramedical sciences, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, from August 2019 to July 2020. Group A included 16 subjects and Group B with 15 subjects. The subjects who fall into the inclusion criteria were included, and subjects who are willing to participate in the study were included in this study. Neurological signs, Radiating pain below the knee, recent surgery & fracture around the hip, and hypermobile joint were excluded. Group A received Mulligan's mobilization and core stability exercise; Group B received muscle energy technique with core stability exercise. Outcome Measures: Pain and functional disability were measured by the modified Oswestry disability index; Kinesiophobia was by the Tampa scale. RESULTS: The level of significance was 0.05. The mean values of the post-test show marked improvement between the groups, with a p-value of 2.69 for functional disability and a p-value of 0.45 for pain. Significant progress was observed in participants who received Mulligan's movement with mobilization. Statistical calculation was done with the help of SPSS version 18. CONCLUSION: Mulligan mobilization is more effective than the muscle energy technique in managing sacroiliac joint dysfunction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Eating disorders (EDs), dysfunctional attitudes (DAs), and limitation of movement due to kinesiophobia, which are more common in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), may contribute to poor metabolic control, weight gain, disregard for treatment, and an increased prevalence of microvascular and macrovascular complications; however, current evidence is limited to small studies and restricted measures. In this study, these characteristics were assessed in patients with T2DM relative to controls, and factors independently associated with ED, DA and kinesiophobia were examined. Material and methods: This case-control study was conducted between July 2018 and December 2018 at the Departments of Endocrinology and Psychiatry of Erzurum Regional Training and Research Hospital, Erzurum, Turkey. A total of 150 patients diagnosed with T2DM and 150 healthy controls were included. The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT), Dysfunctional Attitude Scale (DAS), and Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK) were applied. Results: Median age in the control group was 38 (IQR: 27 - 47) years, and 56 (IQR: 46 - 61) years in the patient group. Women comprised 67.3% of controls and 61.3% of patients. Although all scale scores were higher in the patient group compared to controls, the possible relationships were not confirmed by multiple linear regression analysis. Significant factors independently associated with higher DAS score were high age (p=0.043), high body mass index (p=0.021) and presence of comorbidity (p=0.019). Significant factors associated with higher TSK score were high age (p Conclusion: Our results show that, rather than the presence of T2DM, other patient characteristics were likely to be more influential on ED, DA and kinesiophobia. These show that older patients with T2DM who have comorbidities or DM-related complications are more likely to benefit from management that account for these characteristics.

Context: Psychological readiness is a significant factor in determining successful return to sport (RTS) and physical activities after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Knowing the influence of kinesiophobia on physical tests that are used to guide RTS, such as the single-leg hop for distance (SLHD), would contribute to advancing clinical practice. Objective: To investigate the association between kinesiophobia and SLHD performance in patients after ACL reconstruction. Data Sources: A comprehensive search strategy entailed surveying 6 databases for relevant articles published from January 2009 to March 2021. Study Selection: Articles published in English that were a minimum of level 3 evidence describing kinesiophobia, as measured by the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia, and related to SLHD performance in patients after ACL reconstruction. Study Design: Systematic review. Level of Evidence: Level 3. Data Extraction: Study characteristics, sample population demographics, instrument(s), or approach(s) used to assess kinesiophobia and SLHD performance, and corresponding results. Results: A total of 152 potential studies were identified, 106 studies underwent screening, 40 were reviewed in full, and 7 studies were included. Meta-analysis could not be performed because of differences in experimental design among studies and instances of missing outcome data. Currently, moderate evidence indicates patients with ACL reconstruction that exhibit less kinesiophobia perform better on the SLHD test. Conclusion: The outcomes of this review propose that sports health practitioners consider the influence of kinesiophobia on SLHD performance as a criterion for RTS and physical activities in patients after ACL reconstruction. Objectives: The primary objective was to determine the responsiveness of the Dutch version of the 13-item Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia for cardiac patients (TSK-NL Heart). The secondary objective was to assess changes in kinesiophobia during cardiac rehabilitation. Methods: Kinesiophobia was measured pre- and post-cardiac rehabilitation using the TSK-NL Heart questionnaire in 109 cardiac patients (61 years; 76% men). The effect size of kinesiophobia score changes was calculated for the full population. A measure that is responsive to change should produce higher effects sizes in patients in whom kinesiophobia improves. Therefore, effect sizes were also calculated for patients who did or did not improve on selected external measures. For this step, the Cardiac Anxiety Questionnaire (CAQ) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were completed as external measures in a subsample of 58 patients. Results: The effect size of the TSK-NL Heart for the full study population was small (0.29). In line with the study hypothesis the effect size was higher (moderate) for patients with improved CAQ (0.52) and HADS scores (0.54). Prevalence of high kinesiophobia levels decreased from 40% pre-cardiac rehabilitation to 26% post-cardiac rehabilitation (p = 0.004). Conclusion: The TSK-NL Heart has moderate responsiveness and can be used to measure changes in kinesiophobia. Improvements in kinesiophobia were observed during cardiac rehabilitation. Nevertheless, high levels of kinesiophobia were still highly prevalent post-cardiac rehabilitation. LAY ABSTRACT Fear of movement (kinesiophobia) is common in patients referred for cardiac rehabilitation. Before interventions can be designed to target kinesiophobia, the impact of current cardiac rehabilitation programmes on kinesiophobia should be studied. Kinesiophobia is measured with the Tampa Scale for kinesiophobia (TSK-Heart). In order to measure the effect of cardiac rehabilitation on kinesiophobia, the TSK-Heart should be able to detect changes in the level of kinesiophobia (responsiveness). This study determined the responsiveness of the TSK-Heart and assessed changes in the level of kinesiophobia during cardiac rehabilitation, and shows that the TSK-Heart has moderate responsiveness. In addition, it was found that the prevalence of high levels of kinesiophobia, decreased from 40% before cardiac rehabilitation to 26% after cardiac rehabilitation.

Objectives: To determine the psychometric properties of a questionnaire to assess fear of movement (kinesiophobia): the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK-NL Heart), and to investigate the prevalence of kinesiophobia in patients attending cardiac rehabilitation. Methods: A total of 152 patients were evaluated with the TSK-NL Heart during intake and 7 days later. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability and construct validity were assessed. For construct validity, the Cardiac Anxiety Questionnaire (CAQ) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were used. The factor structure of the TSK-NL Heart was determined by a principal component analysis (PCA). Results: After removal of 4 items due to low internal consistency, the TSK-NL Heart showed substantial reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient; ICC: 0.80). A strong positive correlation was found between the TSK-NL Heart and the CAQ (rs: 0.61). A strong negative correlation was found between the TSK-NL Heart and the HADS (Anxiety) (rs –0.51). The PCA revealed a 3-factor structure as most suitable (fear of injury, avoidance of physical activity, perception of risk). High levels of kinesiophobia were found in 45.4% of patients. Conclusion: The 13-item TSK-NL Heart has good psychometric properties, and we recommend using this version to assess kinesiophobia, which is present in a substantial proportion of patients referred for cardiac rehabilitation.

Purpose: Fear of movement (kinesiophobia) is a major limiting factor in the return to pre-injury sport level after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). The aim of this study was to gain insight into the prevalence of kinesiophobia pre-ACLR, 3 months post-ACLR and 12 months post-ACLR. Furthermore, the preoperative predictability of kinesiophobia at 3 months post-ACLR was addressed.Methods: A retrospective study with data, which were prospectively collected as part of standard care, was conducted to evaluate patients who underwent ACLR between January 2017 and December 2018 in an orthopaedic outpatient clinic. Patient characteristics (age, sex, body mass index), injury-to-surgery time, preoperative pain level (KOOS pain subscale) and preoperative knee function (IKDC-2000) were used as potential predictor variables for kinesiophobia (TSK-17) at 3 months post-ACLR in linear regression analysis.Results: The number of patients with a high level of kinesiophobia (TSK > 37) reduced from 92 patients (69.2%) preoperatively to 44 patients (43.1%) 3 months postoperatively and 36 patients (30.8%) 12 months postoperatively. The prediction model, based on a multivariable regression analysis, showed a positive correlation between four predictor variables (prolonged injury-to-surgery time, high preoperative pain level, male sex and low body mass index) and a high level of kinesiophobia at 3 months postoperatively (R2 = 0.384, p = 0.02).Conclusion: The prevalence of kinesiophobia decreases during postoperative rehabilitation, but high kinesiophobia is still present in a large portion of the patients after ACLR. Timing of reconstruction seems to be the strongest predictor for high kinesiophobia 3 months post-ACLR. This study is the first step in the development of a screening tool to detect patients with kinesiophobia after ACLR. Identifying patients preoperatively opens the possibility to treat patients and thereby potentially increase the return to pre-injury sport level rate after ACLR.Level Of Evidence: III. Study Design: A prospective cohort study.Objective: To examine the relationship of fear-avoidance beliefs and neuromuscular activity during gait in adult degenerative scoliosis (ADS) patients.Summary Of Background Data: Among patients with chronic spine pain, fear-avoidance beliefs are predictive of poor surgical outcomes. Fear-avoi occurs when patients perceive that movement will worsen underlying physical problems. This process leads them to restrict activity, which further heightens emotional distress. Patients with ADS have previously been shown to have an altered gait pattern. Electromyography is evolving into a useful tool to further our understanding of the pathologic manifestations of ADS during gait.Methods: Fifty ADS patients completed the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK) questionnaire and the Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ). Surface electromyography electrodes were bilaterally placed on trunk and lower extremity muscles. Each patient performed a series of over-ground gait trials at a self-selected comfortable speed. Pearson Product Correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between the self-reported fear of movement measures and the neuromuscular gait analysis biomechanical data.Results: The TSK total score and the FABQ physical were correlated with muscle onset of the External Oblique (P = 0.005), Gluteus Maximus (P = 0.018), Multifidi (P = 0.017), Erector Spinae (P = 0.014), Rectus Femoris (i = 0.008), Semitendinosus (P = 0.012), Tibilais Anterior (P = 0.012), and Medial Gastrocnemius (P = 0.010). Furthermore, the TSK total score, FABQ physical portion were correlated with muscle peak activity of Medial Gastrocnemius (P = 0.007), Multifidi (P = 0.014), and Tibilais Anterior (i = 0.050) and time to peak muscle activity of the Medial Gastrocnemius (P = 0.006) and Semitendinosus P = 0.038.Conclusion: This study demonstrates a strong correlation between neuromuscular gait parameters and fear-avoidance of movement which may reflect ADS patient experiences during ambulation. Further, it demonstrates that there are different aspects of fear-avoidance that may influence gait parameters. Background: Individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) demonstrate persistent alterations in walking gait characteristics that contribute to poor long-term outcomes. Higher kinesiophobia, or fear of movement/re-injury, may result in the avoidance of movements that increase loading on the ACLR limb.Research Question: Determine the association between kinesiophobia and walking gait characteristics in physically active individuals with ACLR.Methods: We enrolled thirty participants with a history of unilateral ACLR (49.35 ± 27.29 months following ACLR) into this cross-sectional study. We used the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK-11) to measure kinesiophobia. We collected walking gait characteristics during a 60-s walking trial, which included gait speed, peak vertical ground reaction force (vGRF), instantaneous vGRF loading rate, peak internal knee extension moment (KEM), and knee flexion excursion. We calculated lower extremity kinetic and kinematic measures on the ACLR limb, and limb symmetry indices between ACLR and contralateral limbs (LSI= [ACLR/contralateral]*100). We used linear regression models to determine the association between TSK-11 score and each walking gait characteristic. We determined the change in R2 (ΔR2) when adding TSK-11 scores into the linear regression model after accounting for demographic covariates (sex, Tegner activity score, graft type, time since reconstruction, history of concomitant meniscal procedure).Results: We did not find a significant association between kinesiophobia and self-selected gait speed (ΔR2 0.038, P = 0.319). Kinesiophobia demonstrated weak, non-significant associations with kinetic and kinematic outcomes on the ACLR limb and all LSI outcomes (ΔR2 range = 0.001-0.098).Significance: These data do not support that kinesiophobia is a critical factor contributing to walking gait characteristics in physically active individuals with ACLR. Study Design: A prospective cohort study.Objective: The current study utilized quantitative gait analysis to examine the relationship of fear-avoidance beliefs to gait patterns in patients with adult degenerative scoliosis (ADS).Summary Of Background Data: Among patients with chronic spine pain, fear-avoidance beliefs are predictive of behavioral deficiencies, poor work, and surgery outcomes. The impact of such beliefs on patients with major spinal deformity has yet to be investigated. Patients with ADS have previously been shown to have an altered gait pattern. Utilizing quantified gait analysis, this study aims to examine correlations between fear-avoidance and various aspects of gait in patients with ADS.Methods: Twenty-five ADS patients completed the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK) questionnaire and the Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ). Each patient performed a series of overground gait trials at a self-selected comfortable speed. Pearson product correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between the self-reported fear of movement measures and the objective gait analysis biomechanical data.Results: TSK score correlated strongly with gait speed, stride, step, double support times, and step length, and correlated moderately with cadence, and stride length. The FABQ physical portion strongly correlated with stride length and step length. The FABQ physical portion was moderately correlated with gait speed and single support time. The FABQ work portion was correlated with stride length and step length.Conclusion: This study demonstrates a strong correlation between biomechanical gait parameters, as measured with gait analysis, and fear-avoidance of movement, as measured with the TSK and FABQ. Further, it demonstrates that quantified gait analysis can be a useful tool to evaluate patients with spine deformity and to assess the outcomes of treatments in this group of patients. BACKGROUND: Manual physical therapists (MPTs) working in primary care get limited information about patient's courses of (chronic) low back pain (LBP). Identification of kinesiophobia is mostly based on clinical perception. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the scores with which manual physical therapists in a primary care setting identify kinesiophobia in patients with low back pain, and the patients' self-reported measures of kinesiophobia. METHODS: The cross-sectional study comprised 104 patients with LBP and 17 MPTs. Patients first independently completed the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK-17). The therapists, blinded to the TSK-scores, rated their perception of a patient's kinesiophobia using the Visual Analogue Scale-Estimation (VAS-est) and the accuracy of their ratings using the Visual Analogue Scale-Accuracy (VAS-ac). Kendall's tau b was used to determine the level of correlation between scores on the TSK-17 and the VAS-est. RESULTS: Patients' mean scores on the TSK-17 were 35.6 (SD 7.6). The mean scores on the VAS-est and VAS-ac were 34.2 mm (SD 23.6) and 70.4 mm (SD 7.4) respectively. The TSK-17 scores showed a 'fair' association with the VAS-est scores (Kendall's τ b = 0.38; p ⩽ 0.01) and a 'fair' association with the scores on the VAS-ac (Kendall's τ b = 0.28; p ⩽ 0.05). Background: The Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK), an instrument for measuring fear of movement/(re)injury, has been confirmed as an important predictor for the persistence of pain-related disability. The aims of this study were to evaluate the psychometric properties of a German version of the TSK (TSK-GV), examining aspects of content validity with special focus on fear-avoidance and endurance, and to confirm criterion-related validity in patients with low back pain (LBP). Methods: A total of 191 patients with LBP were included in this study. Several models with different factor structures from published studies were compared in a confirmatory factor analysis. Internal consistencies of the TSK-GV and its subscales were examined, and correlations with related self-report measures were calculated. Results: The internal consistency of the TSK-GV was a = 0.73. A two-factor model with 11 items was found to be the best fit for our data. The two factors were labelled Somatic Focus (SF) and Activity Avoidance (AA). The total score, SF and AA revealed moderate to high correlations with other fear-avoidance variables. Abstract: Background: The impact on kinesiophobia (fear of movement) for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) is not known. The aims were to describe the occurrence of kinesiophobia in patients with CAD, and to investigate the influence on kinesiophobia by clinical variables. Materials and methods: In total, 332 patients, mean age, 65±9.1years diagnosed with CAD at a university hospital were included in the study. The Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia Heart (TSK-SV Heart) was used to assess kinesiophobia. Comparisons between high versus low levels of kinesiophobia were measured for each variable. Binary logistic regression analyses were performed with a high level of kinesiophobia (TSK-SV Heart>37) as dependent variable, and with the observed variables as independent. The study had an exploratory, cross-sectional design. Results: A high level of kinesiophobia was found in 20% of the patients. The following variables decreased the odds ratio (OR) for a high level of kinesiophobia: Attending cardiac rehabilitation (yes vs no: −56.7%), level of physical activity (medium vs high: −80.8%), Short-Form 36: general health (−4.3%), physical functioning (−1.8%). Two variables increased the OR for a high level of kinesiophobia: heart failure as complication at hospital (yes vs no: 418.7%), anxiety (19.2%). Previous heart failure (yes vs no) was unexpectedly found to reduce kinesiophobia (−88.3%) due to suppression. Conclusions: Several important clinical findings with impact on rehabilitation and prognosis for patients with CAD were found to be associated with a high level of kinesiophobia. Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of an abbreviated version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK) in a clinical sample of patients with chronic pain. Chronic pain patients (n = 276) seeking treatment at an interdisciplinary treatment center completed self-report questionnaires including the TSK-13, and 2 tests of physical functioning. Four competing models of the TSK were tested using confirmatory factor analysis. Internal consistency was assessed, as were discriminant evidence of construct validity and concurrent criterion-related validity. Incremental validity was assessed with hierarchical multiple regressions controlling for pain severity. The analyses indicated that an 11-item, 2-factor structure best fit the data. The first factor, somatic focus, consisted of 5 items, while the second factor, activity avoidance, was comprised of 6 items. The TSK-11 scales demonstrated acceptable levels of internal consistency, as well as evidence of discriminant, concurrent criterion-related, and incremental validity. Somatic focus uniquely predicted perceived disability while activity avoidance uniquely predicted actual physical performance, controlling for pain severity. The 2-factor structure of the TSK-11 was found to be a brief, reliable, and valid measure of fear of movement/(re)injury for chronic pain patients. We recommend that the TSK-11 be used in future research and in clinical settings. Perspective: In this study, confirmatory factor analysis identified the 2-factor TSK-11 as the best fitting model of TSK factor structure. Abstract: The present study aimed to develop norms for the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK), a frequently used measure of fear of movement/(re)injury. Norms were assessed for the TSK total score as well as for scores on the previously proposed TSK activity avoidance and TSK somatic focus scales. Data from Dutch, Canadian, and Swedish pain samples were used (N=3082). Norms were established using multiple regression to obtain more valid and reliable norms than can be obtained by subgroup analyses based on age or gender. In the Dutch samples (N=2236), pain diagnosis was predictive of all TSK scales. More specifically, chronic low back pain displayed the highest scores on the TSK scores followed by upper extremity disorder, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis. Gender was predictive of TSK somatic focus scores and age of TSK activity avoidance scores, with male patients having somewhat higher scores than female patients and older patients having higher scores compared with younger patients. In the Canadian (N=510) and Swedish (N=336) samples, gender was predictive of all TSK scales, with male patients having somewhat higher scores than female patients. These norm data may assist the clinician and researcher in the process of decision making and treatment evaluation. Abstract: The Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK) is one of the most frequently employed measures for assessing pain-related fear in pain patients. Although the TSK has been translated into different languages, a Spanish version of the TSK has not been available, up to now. Thus, the aim of this study was to validate the Spanish version of the TSK in 2 different pain samples: A heterogeneous chronic pain sample (n = 125) and a musculoskeletal acute pain sample (n = 86). Factor analysis revealed a 2-factor model of 11 items replicated on both samples, named TSK-11. The instrument obtained shows good reliability (internal consistency and stability) and validity (convergent and predictive), with the advantage of brevity. Evidence is provided on discriminant validity between both TSK factors (called Activity Avoidance and Harm). The Harm factor shows the best predictive validity, as it predicts pain persistence, catastrophizing, depression, and pain intensity scores after 6 months. Changes in the Activity Avoidance factor are positively correlated with changes in catastrophizing and anxiety, and negatively associated with changes in functional status. The results of this study point to the relative contribution of both components of pain-related fear to pain adjustment. Perspective: This article presents the Spanish version of the TSK. Factor analysis revealed a 2-factor model (called Activity Avoidance and Harm). The version obtained shows good reliability and validity. Abstract: The presence of fear of movement is related to higher disability rates in several patient groups. The purpose of this study was first to analyze fear of movement and the relation with pain and disability in pre-operative patients with low back pain and radiculopathy and secondly to analyze the factor structure of the Dutch version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK). The TSK and Pain Disability Index (PDI) were assessed in 128 patients. An explorative factor analysis (EFA) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the TSK were performed using Structural Equation Models (SEMs). Fear of movement was significantly related to leg-pain and pain disability. A four-factor model had an explained variance of 49%. After further analyses a solution with three factors (harm, somatic focus, activity avoidance) and nine items (1, 3, 6, 7, 9, 11, 14, 15, 17) had the best fit. Based on the content of this study clinically a factor structure with three subscales with nine items is favorable for usage in pre-operative patients with low back pain and radiculopathy. The objective of this study was to investigate the test-retest stability of the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK) and their subscales in chronic pain patients over relatively long period of times like those that are most often seen in clinical practice. Fifty non-malignant chronic pain patients filled out the PCS and TSK twice with a mean interval between testing of 52 days. Introduction: Pain related fear and pain intensity have been identified as factors negatively influencing Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) performances in patients with CLBP. Conflicting results have been reported in the literature. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationships between pain intensity and pain-related fear on the one hand, and performances during an FCE on the other hand in two samples of patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Methods: Two cross sectional observation studies were performed with two samples of patients with CLBP (study 1: n = 79; study 2: n = 58). Pain related fears were operationally defined as the score on the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia in study 1, and the Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ) in study 2. Pain intensity was measured with a Numeric Rating Scale in both studies. Avoidance behavior observed during FCE was in both studies operationally defined as the unwillingness to engage in high intensity performance levels of three different functional activities: high intensity lifting, prolonged standing in a forward bend position, and fast repetitive bending at the waist. Results: A total of 25 correlations between pain and pain related fear, and performance variables were calculated, out of which 7 were significant ( p < 0.05). The strength of these significant correlations ranged from r = −0.23 to r = −0.50. Multivariate linear regression analyses revealed non-significant relationships in most instances. Pain and pain related fear contributed little if any to these models. Conclusions: The relation between pain and pain related fear and FCE performance is weak or non-existent in patients with CLBP. Abstract: The Tampa scale for kinesiophobia (TSK) was developed to measure fear of movement/(re)injury in chronic pain patients. Although studies of the Dutch adaptation of the TSK have identified fear of movement/(re)injury as an important predictor of chronic pain, pain-related avoidance behaviour, and disability, surprisingly little data on the psychometric properties of the original English version of the TSK are available. The present study examined the reliability, construct validity and factor structure of the TSK in a sample of chronic pain patients (n =200) presenting for an interdisciplinary functional restoration program. Consistent with prior evaluations of the Dutch version of the TSK, the present findings indicate that the English TSK possesses a high degree of internal consistency and is positively associated with related measures of fear-avoidance beliefs, pain catastrophizing, pain-related disability and general negative affect. The TSK was not related to individual differences in physical performance testing as assessed using standardised treadmill and lifting tasks. Confirmatory factor analyses suggest that the TSK is best characterized by a three-factor traith method model that includes all 17 of the original scale items and takes into account the distinction between positively and negatively keyed items. The results of the present study provide important details regarding the psychometric properties of the original English version of the TSK and suggest that it may be unnecessary to remove the negatively keyed items in an attempt to improve scale validity. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to obtain a cross-cultural adaptation and evaluation of a Simplified Chinese (SC) version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK) for use in patients with low back pain (LBP)., Study Design and Setting: The TSK was translated and adapted cross-culturally following international guidelines. It was administered to 150 patients with LBP along with the Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire, Oswestry Disability Index, Short Form Health Survey, and a pain visual analog scale assessment. Measurement properties, including content validity, construct validity (structural validity and hypotheses testing), internal consistency, and test-retest reliability, were tested., Results: The final analysis included data from 142 patients. Content validity analysis led to the exclusion of four reverse-scored items due to low item-total correlation. Structural validity analysis favored a three-factor structure: somatic focus, activity avoidance, and avoidance belief. Construct validity analysis confirmed 9 of 11 a priori hypotheses. Both the 17-item and 13-item versions of the SC-TSK had excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.74 and 0.82, all values, respectively) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.86, 0.90)., Conclusion: TSK was adapted successfully into an SC version with excellent internal consistency and test-retest reliability and with acceptable construct validity.
