8. Daoism, Novelty, and Usefulness: A Philosophical Exploration of Creativity
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
This paper elucidates a Daoist perspective of creativity by focusing on novelty and usefulness. Drawing on the thought of Zhuangzi, it is noted that he advocates original and unorthodox views by challenging social norms and traditional practices. He also questions the prevailing notions and assumptions concerning the usefulness and uselessness of things and people. To liberate humans from conventional commitment and judgment, Zhuangzi recommends two Daoist concepts. The first is "fasting of the heart-mind" (xin zhai) where a person empties oneself of preconceived ideas and practices. The second Daoist notion is "wandering" (you) where one responds to people, things, and situations in an open-minded, appreciative, playful, and spontaneous manner. There are three major implications arising from a Zhuangzian conception of creativity: it contributes to an existing literature gap on the philosophy of creativity, extends the research on Eastern formulations of creativity that hitherto have centered on Confucianism, and challenges and re-constructs the prevalent understandings and presuppositions concerning creativity and related terms.

10. Transformational School Leadership from a Neo-Daoist Lens
- Author
-
Yenming, Zhang and Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
In this article, we aim to extend the existing literature on the theory of transformational school leadership through a neo-Daoist lens. Focussing on the writings of the third-century Chinese philosopher Wang Bi, we make three arguments. First, his ideas promote a transformational leader who effects change through ziran (spontaneity or natural actions). Second, such leaders inspire all of their staff to work towards a communitarian vision by exercising situational judgement and wuming (namelessness). Third, Wang's philosophy has the potential to address a major criticism concerning the abuse of power in transformational leadership. A neo-Daoist leader does not seek to push for changes in an autocratic, divisive, and hurried manner. Instead, such a leader draws strength from contemplative practice and contextual sensitivity to foster harmonious relationships.

11. Clarifying the Concept of Future-Ready Learning: A Confucian Perspective
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
This article critically discusses the concept of future-ready learning by drawing on the educational thought of Confucius as recorded in the "Analects." Two main arguments are made in this paper. First, Confucius views future-readiness as the preparedness to broaden "dao" (Way), which is a vision of human excellence. Secondly, Confucius does not limit future-ready learning to the acquisition of competencies, nor does he adopt a functionalist assumption of learning. Instead, he emphasizes the learning goal of becoming a "junzi" (exemplary person) who broadens the Way through "ren" (humanity), "yi" (appropriateness), "xiuji" (self-cultivation) and "li" (normative behaviours). Future-ready learning, it is proposed in this essay, is about the cultivation of character and competence to prepare individuals to adapt to and create new realities. A Confucian perspective challenges the skills and competencies agenda that underpins the prevailing notions of future-ready learning, and brings to the fore the habituation of virtues.

12. Confucian Trustworthiness and Communitarian Education
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
Through the conceptual lens of 'education-as-moulding' and 'education-as-drawing-out,' this article expounds the Confucian concept of trustworthiness (xin) and its relation with communitarian education. Informed by the "Analects," it is argued that Confucius envisions a community of trustworthy members who are motivated and characterised by interpersonal trust. From a Confucian viewpoint, both approaches -- education-as-moulding and education-as-drawing-out -- are salient for the development of trustworthiness as a moral virtue in students and relational trust in the school community. The paper also addresses a prominent criticism of communitarian education: the imposition of prescribed values and curriculum on students that suppresses their individual identities, interests and voices. From a Confucian perspective, such an imposition over-emphasises education-as-moulding and neglects education-as-drawing out, making the enforcement ineffective in the cultivation of trustworthiness as a moral virtue. What is recommended instead is the harmonisation of the self and others through both education-as-moulding and education-as-drawing-out.

15. Beyond the Competencies Agenda in Large-Scale International Assessments: A Confucian Alternative
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
This article examines a Confucian conception of competence and its corresponding response to the competencies agenda that underpins international large-scale assessments such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). It is argued that standardised transnational assessments are undergirded by a technical rationality that emphasises proficiency in discrete skills for their instrumental worth at the expense of moral cultivation and personal mastery. Challenging the competencies agenda, this paper draws upon a relational model of competence proposed by Jones and Moore (1995) that views competence as essentially communal, situated within social practices, and manifested through tacit achievement. Building on their work, a Confucian notion of competence is advocated wherein skills are predicated on the virtue of "ren" (humanity) and demonstrated through appropriate judgement in everyday settings. A Confucian perspective offers an alternative to the behaviourist and generic notions of performance in global assessments by highlighting the interpersonal, cultural, and ethical dimensions of competence.

Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
It’s not just the models, techniques, or technologies that improve building performance; the digital skills of built environment professionals also play a significant part. The deluge of data from buildings, intelligent systems, and simulation tools is well-documented, and like other domains, building design, construction, and operations professionals are keen to learn skills like Python scripting that are common to the data science communities. This paper analyzes a massive open online course on the edX platform called Data Science for Construction, Architecture, and Engineering. This course was launched in April 2020, and it combines building science concepts with beginner-level data science skills, such as using Python and the essential libraries of Pandas, Scikit Learn, and Seaborn. This paper presents an analysis of the demographics and geographic data from 18,600 participants and survey results from 126 out of 1,561 verified course users. The survey focused on the experience of course participants and suggestions for improvement. This information can aid other data science educators in developing content to better educate built environment professionals.

32. Rethinking the Notion of the High-Performing Education System: A Daoist Response
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
This article challenges the dominant notion of the 'high-performing education system' and offers an alternative interpretation from a Daoist perspective. The paper highlights two salient characteristics of such a system: its ability to outperform other education systems in international large-scale assessments; and its status as a positive or negative 'reference society'. It is contended that external standards are applied and imposed on educational systems across the globe, judging a system to be high- or low- performing, and consequently worthy of emulation or deserving of criticism. Three cardinal Daoist principles that are drawn from the "Zhuangzi" are expounded: a rejection of an external and oppressive "dao" (way); the emptying of one's heart-mind; and an ethics of difference. A major implication is a celebration of a plurality of high performers and reference societies, each unique in its own "dao" but converging on mutual learning and appreciation.

33. Cultivating Creativity in a High-Performing Education System: The Example of Singapore
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene and Ng, Connie S. L.
- Abstract
Focusing on the cultivation of twenty-first century competencies in a high-performing education system, this article examines the teaching and learning of creativity in Singapore. It is argued that "everyday creativity" and creativity as innovation are privileged by educators in Singapore. Creativity is promoted through a harmonized approach that is manifested in two main ways. First, novelty and usefulness are integrated with the help of design thinking for the sake of social good. Secondly, the advancement of creativity co-exists with and supports the high-stakes examination system by infusing creative thinking into the teaching of school subjects. The example of Singapore adds to the existing research by demonstrating a cultural approach to the teaching and learning of creativity as well as the potential of design thinking to developing creative thinking in students.

34. Mindfulness and Morality: Educational Insights from Confucius
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
Addressing a research gap on the relationship between mindfulness and morality, this paper draws insights from Confucius' notion of "jing." I explain how "jing" essentially refers to maintaining a full, respectful and humanity-centred attention towards others. To illustrate the application of Confucius' conception of mindfulness, I use the current coronavirus pandemic as an example. On the one hand, mindfulness is useful as a coping mechanism to reduce stress for individuals during the crisis. But an amoral and atomistic approach to mindfulness is inadequate in addressing social problems such as selfishness that stems from panic buying and community infection caused by inconsiderate behaviours. In this regard, Confucius' concept of respectful attention has the potential to motivate everyone to go beyond self-interest to demonstrate deference, empathy and love towards others. A Confucian orientation of mindfulness extends the existing literature on the ethical foundations and dimensions of mindfulness for educational institutions.

35. Conceptualising Social Justice in Education: A Daoist Perspective
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
Addressing a research gap concerning the insufficient philosophical discourses on social justice from non-Western traditions, this article conceptualises social justice in education from a Daoist perspective. Drawing upon a Chinese classic "Daodejing," it is argued that Daoism is aligned with relational justice through its emphasis on justice as "dao" (way-making). Relational justice as way-making is comprised of three fundamental characteristics: it eschews all forms of exploitation and subjugation; it relies on deferential leadership; and it balances the needs and interests of the self and those of others through "wuwei" (non-coercive actions), "wuming" (nameless) and "wuyu" (objectless desires). The paper further highlights the key educational implications in light of the neoliberal conditions of schooling. It is contended that a socially just school from a Daoist viewpoint rejects differentiation, measurement, competition and individualism that engender and perpetuate social injustice in favour of critical dialogues, correlation and harmony.

36. Path-Dependency or Path-Shaping? An Analysis of the Policy to Target Exam-Orientation in South Korea
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene and Yang, JeongA
- Abstract
This article draws upon Torfing's dialectics of path-shaping and path-dependency to shed light on the persistent challenge faced by the policymakers to reduce academic burden in Korea. It is argued that the policy agenda to promote a more all-encompassing form of education reflects the path-shaping motivation of the Ministry of Education to modify the existing stable path of exam-orientation. In the course of enacting the policy to target exam-orientation, path-dependency is manifested through a paradoxical increase in exam pressure and perpetuation of the students' dependence on private tutoring. Furthermore, both path-shaping and path-dependency are evident in the strategy of Korean educators to devise teaching approaches that synthesise indigenous and foreign ideals and practices. The example of Korea testifies to the formation of a dominant policy path due to the complex interplay between official rhetoric, local histories, socio-cultural norms on teaching and learning, and major policy actors.

37. Confucius and Langerian Mindfulness
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
In this essay, I draw upon Ellen J. Langer's notions of mindlessness and mindfulness to identify and delineate Confucius' views on mindfulness. Langer's theory exemplifies a social-cognitive approach to mindfulness which is a prominent orientation in the extant research. I argue that Confucius, like Langer, rejects mindlessness that is characterised by an over-reliance on automatic responses based on past knowledge and experiences. Furthermore, Confucius supports Langerian mindfulness by underlining the importance of a flexible mindset that is demonstrated through making novel distinctions, appreciating new perspectives and being sensitive to the context. But Confucius' formulation of mindfulness goes beyond Langer's by advocating the setting of one's heart-mind on learning and the application of virtues. A Confucian interpretation of mindfulness debunks an East-West dichotomy on mindfulness and illustrates the harmonisation of the cognitive, affective, moral and social dimensions of mindfulness.

ELITISM in education , *SCHOOL rules & regulations , *FOREGROUNDING , *POLICY sciences , *STUDENTS , *PERFECTIONISM (Personality trait) - Abstract
This paper extends the scholarship on attainment grouping by focusing on the policy initiatives of streaming and subject‐based banding (SBB) in Singapore. The study is framed by the concept of pragmatic perfectionism, which refers to the continuous and ideals‐oriented drive to improve a system through practical, incremental and paradoxical measures. It is argued that SBB is aligned with setting by giving students the flexibility and choice to study different subjects at varying levels. Mixed‐attainment grouping is also evident, where students are grouped in mixed‐form classes for selected subjects. However, SBB may have inadvertently maintained between‐school segregation for elite and non‐elite schools by supporting the existing policy of school posting based on students' exam scores. This paper contributes to the diverse formulations, adaptations and justifications surrounding attainment grouping. The study also illustrates the usefulness of pragmatic perfectionism in foregrounding the potential and tensions in educational policymaking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

39. Investigator Bias and Theory-Ladenness in Cross-Cultural Research: Insights from Wittgenstein
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
A relatively under-explored topic in the current literature on and methods for research in the field of comparative and international education is the problem of investigator bias in cross-cultural research. This article discusses the nature of and an approach to address investigator bias in research that originates from the theory-ladenness of observation. Theory-ladenness essentially holds that everything one observes or perceives is influenced by and interpreted through one's existing beliefs, values, assumptions and expectations. This article explains how the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein's exposition of belief system--what he calls "world-picture"--illuminates our understanding of investigator bias and theory-ladenness by elucidating the organisation, inculcation and revision of beliefs. It is further proposed that comparativists confront the challenge of investigator bias by critically reflecting on their world-picture, the impact of their world-picture on their theoretical commitment and research process, and the evaluation and revision of their theory through the interaction between theory and data.

42. Social Justice Education with Chinese Characteristics: An Example from Shanghai
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
This article analyses a Chinese approach to social justice in education using the example of Shanghai. In addressing schooling inequalities, Shanghai illustrates "social justice education with Chinese characteristics," which revolves around the ideal of 'educational balance' ("jiaoyu junheng"). The 'balance' in question is about achieving a values-centred and all-round education in and across all schools through the cultivation of a school's 'inner quality' ("neihan"). This Chinese formulation of social justice education is manifested through two representative policy measures: creating and strengthening 'new high-quality schools' and helping weak schools to level up. The Chinese characteristics of these action plans are seen in two ways: a focus on social justice between schools rather than between students; and an emphasis on the moral cultivation of students. It is argued that a Chinese model of social justice education promotes educational equity to some extent through the politics of redistribution, recognition and representation. However, a major critique is its hegemonic and top-down nature, which overlooks alternative and competitive voices--especially those of migrant children--as part of a politics of representation.

43. A Confucian Interpretation of Creativity
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
This article explores a Confucian interpretation of creativity with reference to two classics--"Analects" and "Mencius." A Confucian understanding of creativity centers on "yi" (appropriateness) and is motivated by "shu" (empathy) for the purpose of broadening "dao" (Way). Confucian creativity is manifested in two main ways: novelty through original interpretations of the objective world; and appropriateness through flexible responses to concrete circumstances synchronically and diachronically. Two major implications for research on creativity are highlighted. The first is that a Confucian approach to creativity extends the existing research on personal creativity by foregrounding the moral and interpersonal elements. Secondly, Confucian creativity synthesizes novelty and appropriateness, thereby challenging the essentialization of creativity and creative abilities of East Asians. A Confucian conception of creativity transcends a narrow focus on specific creative acts to a broader consideration of the agents, relationships, socio-cultural contexts and related moral issues.

44. Beyond High-Stakes Exam: A Neo-Confucian Educational Programme and Its Contemporary Implications
- Author

Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
This article seeks to clarify the purpose of high-stakes exam and its relationship with teaching and learning by elucidating the educational thought of the eminent neo-Confucian thinker Zhu Xi. The paper contends that Zhu Xi views standardised testing as an essential means to evaluate the learning outcomes, honour exemplary scholars and select suitable persons for official positions. But he rejects exam-centred teaching and learning that promote rote-memorisation and neglect self-cultivation and self-transformation. The paper further delineates Zhu Xi's broad-based and integrated educational programme that is aimed at learning for the sake of one's self through experiential learning, personal inquiry and mindful reading. The essay concludes by highlighting the contemporary implications of Zhu Xi's ideas: they inform the ongoing debates on the usefulness and impacts of high-stakes exam by situating standardised testing within a larger educational agenda that is geared towards self-improvement and personal transformation.

45. Conceptions and Practices of Critical Thinking in Chinese Schools: An Example from Shanghai
- Author

Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
Drawing on MacIntyre's notion of rationality, this article examines the conceptions and practices of critical thinking in Chinese schools. Focusing on the perceptions of school leaders in Shanghai, this study reports that they interpreted critical thinking primarily as personal inquiry and problem solving. They drew attention to the promotion of critical thinking under the current education reform and highlighted ongoing challenges arising from the high-stakes assessments and prevailing socio-cultural values. This paper shows that definitions and applications of critical thinking in Chinese schools are rooted in and shaped by socially embodied and historically contingent traditions. Cultural influences are manifested in an exam-oriented system, an emphasis on didactic teaching, the centrality of textbooks, a non-confrontational view of critical thinking, and a hierarchical relationship between the teacher and students. The example of Shanghai foregrounds the existence and legitimacy of diverse approaches to and expressions of critical thinking across contexts.

46. The Learning School through a Daoist Lens
- Author
-
Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
The article provides an explicit philosophical basis of a 'learning school' by delineating a Daoist interpretation. A learning school is characterised by a student-centred vision, supportive leadership as well as a culture of collaboration and critical inquiry. With reference to the "Daodejing," this paper expounds on the saliency of the concepts of "dao" (way-making), "wuwei" (non-coercive acting) and "wuzhi" (non-dogmatic knowing) to the learning school. It is argued that a Daoist learning school is one where all the staff, individually and together, engage in continuous learning in a spirit of deference and authenticity. It is further maintained that a Daoist perspective which emphasises harmony, accommodation and self-reflexivity avoids a key critique of a learning school as imposing desired outcomes on its members and pressuring them for conformity. Grounding the notion of a learning school in an ancient Chinese paradigm, this article contributes to the diverse understandings, possibilities and debates surrounding such a school model.

47. An Ethical Foundation for Global Citizenship Education: A Neo-Confucian Perspective

Tan, Charlene
- Abstract
Offering an ethical foundation for global citizenship education, this paper draws upon the ideas of neo-Confucian thinker Wang Yangming. Focussing on UNESCO's goal to help learners acquire a sense of belonging to a broader community and humanity, this paper elucidates Wang's concept of innate knowledge ("liangzhi"). The article explains how Wang posits a shared humanity that is premised on moral knowledge inherent in all human beings. He further argues for the extension of innate knowledge by eliminating our selfish tendencies and manifestations that alienate us from other people. Two major implications for global citizenship arising from Wang's ideas are highlighted. First, Wang's notion of innate knowledge, by affirming human dignity, equality and potential, underpins and constitutes the vision of shared humanity in global citizenship. Secondly, Wang's recommended pedagogical approaches promote global citizenship by foregrounding the moral cultivation of learners.
