Bolting and flowering of vegetables are induced by vernalization in their early growth stage. This phenomenon is called premature bolting, and it has caused massive losses in production of vegetables such as cabbage, celery, carrot, radish, and spinach, etc. This review aimed to summarize studies on bolting and flowering pathways, physiological and biochemical changes, and underlined molecular mechanisms of various vegetable crop bolting involving genome and transcriptome analysis, and its association with vegetable breeding. SUMMARY: Cryptotaenia japonica, a traditional medicinal and edible vegetable crops, is well‐known for its attractive flavors and health care functions. As a member of the Apiaceae family, the evolutionary trajectory and biological properties of C. japonica are not clearly understood. Here, we first reported a high‐quality genome of C. japonica with a total length of 427 Mb and N50 length 50.76 Mb, was anchored into 10 chromosomes, which confirmed by chromosome (cytogenetic) analysis. Comparative genomic analysis revealed C. japonica exhibited low genetic redundancy, contained a higher percentage of single‐cope gene families. The homoeologous blocks, Ks, and collinearity were analyzed among Apiaceae species contributed to the evidence that C. japonica lacked recent species‐specific WGD. Through comparative genomic and transcriptomic analyses of Apiaceae species, we revealed the genetic basis of the production of anthocyanins. Several structural genes encoding enzymes and transcription factor genes of the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway in different species were also identified. The CjANSa, CjDFRb, and CjF3H gene might be the target of Cjaponica_2.2062 (bHLH) and Cjaponica_1.3743 (MYB). Our findings provided a high‐quality reference genome of C. japonica and offered new insights into Apiaceae evolution and biology. Significance Statement: Our results indicated how the genome of C. japonica provided a useful model for studying evolutionary trajectory and biological properties in Apiaceae species. Celery (Apium graveolens L.) is a kind of green leaf vegetable with a large consumption demand in the food industry. It is a commonly used material in quick-frozen food stuffing such as dumplings and steamed stuffed. Fresh celery leaf blades and petioles are rich in photosynthetic pigments including chlorophyll and carotenoid, their contents are closely related to the quality of celery and its products. In order to explore the effects of freezing and thawing temperature and thawing time on the degradation of photosynthetic pigments in celery leaf blades and petioles, the changes in photosynthetic pigments during thawing storage were measured under different freezing and thawing temperatures. The results showed that lower freezing and thawing temperatures were beneficial to the preservation of photosynthetic pigments in celery leaf blades and petioles, and the loss of photosynthetic pigments enhanced with the increase in thawing temperature and thawing time. Under the cold storage condition of −80 °C, the loss rate of pigment substances can be reduced by nearly 20% compared with that of −18 °C, and −80 °C and 4 °C could be the best temperature combination of freezing and thawing. The content and degradation rate of photosynthetic pigments in celery leaf blades were higher than that in petioles during thawing, with a total chlorophyll loss rate reaching 35% during 6 to 12 h after thawing. The increase in temperature difference between freezing and thawing could aggravate the damage to the cell structure and the degradation of the pigment, as chlorophyll is more sensitive to temperature changes, and the degradation rate is significantly higher than that of carotenoids. From the perspective of delaying the degradation of photosynthetic pigments, the results of this study will provide potential references for the reasonable configuration of freezing and thawing temperatures in the process of storage and transportation of celery products. The characteristics of anthocyanin and lignin are important parameters in evaluating the quality of red Toona sinensis buds. Red T. sinensis buds are prone to senescence during postharvest storage, which subsequently affects their quality and sales. However, the mechanism of senescence in red T. sinensis buds under low-temperature conditions remains unclear. In this study, red T. sinensis buds were stored at 4 °C, and their anthocyanin and lignin contents as well as the enzyme activities of PAL (phenylalanine ammonia lyase), 4CL (4-coumarate-CoA ligase), CAD (cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase) and POD (peroxidase) were determined at 0, 1, 2 and 3 d after handing. Meanwhile, the cellular structure of postharvest red T. sinensis buds was observed by microscopy. The relative expression of lignin-related and anthocyanin-related genes was analyzed using qRT-PCR. The results show that the anthocyanin content of the leaves was higher than that of the petioles. After 3 d of storage, the anthocyanin content of the leaves was 4.66 times that of the petioles. Moreover, the lignin content of the red T. sinensis buds gradually increased. Compared with 0 d, the lignin content of the leaves and petioles increased by 331.8 and 94.14 mg·g−1, respectively. The enzyme activities of PAL, 4CL, CAD and POD increased during cold storage. The intercellular space and the arrangement of the palisade tissue and sponge tissue in the mesophyll of red T. sinensis buds became smaller and closer, respectively. The secondary cell wall of xylem cells thickened, the number of xylem cells increased, and the arrangement number of the xylem cells became closed in the leaf vein and petioles during red T. sinensis bud storage. The expression levels of anthocyanin-related (Except for TsCHS and TsANS) and lignin-related genes increased during red T. sinensis bud storage and are highly consistent with the accumulation patterns of anthocyanins and lignin. This study may serve as a reference for exploring the molecular mechanisms of senescence, regulating the quality and cultivating new varieties of red T. sinensis buds that have low lignin content but high anthocyanin content after harvest. Houttuynia cordata Thunb., called Yuxingcao in Chinese, is an important medicinal plant and vegetable consumed in the southern regions of China. This review aims to summarize studies on the phyto-physiological chemistry, cytology, molecular biology, and genomics of H. cordata. Studies on the physiology and biochemistry of H. cordata have grown over the past few decades. Phenotypic and agronomic traits, tissue culture, elemental analysis, photosynthetic studies, bioactive compound identification, and antioxidant research have been reported. Molecular biological studies, such as those of molecular markers, microRNAs, DNA variations, protein variations, and transcriptomes have also advanced. Recent studies have focused on the rDNA and chloroplast genome of this plant. This review could serve as a basis to perform the genetic breeding, genomic advance, and cultivation of this valuable diversified plant resource for medicinal applications and vegetable production. The male-sterile carrot is an effective material for carrot breeding. The atp6 gene is involved in carrot fertility. However, the differences in lengths, copies, and expression profiles of the atp6 gene in fertile and male-sterile lines of carrot are unclear. In this study, one copy atp6 gene was found in the mtDNAs of ‘Kuroda’ (fertility, 954 bp) and ‘Wuye-BY’ (male sterility, 819 bp) carrot lines, while two copies atp6 genes (Wuye-L and Wuye-D, 954 bp and 819 bp, respectively) were found in the mtDNA of ‘Wuye’ (fertility). Two putative conserved domains have been detected in the carrot atp6 protein. Evolutionary analysis showed that the atp6 protein sequences of Wuye-L and Kuroda were clustered in the same branch, while Wuye-D and Wuye-BY were clustered in the same branch. The atp6 gene was higher expressed in the flowers of ‘Kuroda’ and ‘Wuye’ (Wuye-L), while lower expressed in ‘Wuye-BY’ and ‘Wuye’ (Wuye-D). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Celery (Apium graveolensL.), one of the most important vegetables in Apiaceae family, is cultivated worldwide and utilized in food and cosmetic industries because it is an excellent source of vitamins, phenolic compounds, volatile oils and other nutrients. Celery extracts possess various medicinal properties, such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and lowering blood glucose and serum lipid levels. With the rapid advancements in molecular biology and sequencing technology, studies on celery have been performed. Numerous molecular markers and regulatory genes have been discovered and applied to improve celery. Research advances, including genetic breeding, genomics research, function genes and chemical composition, regarding celery are reviewed in this paper. Further exploration and application trends are briefly described. This review provides a reference for basic and applied research on celery, an important Apiaceae vegetable crop. Accurate normalization of gene expression data is an absolute prerequisite to obtain reliable results in qPCR analysis. Oenanthe javanica, an aquatic perennial herb, belongs to the Oenanthe genus in Apiaceae family, with known medicinal properties. In the current study, O. javanica was subjected to hormone stimuli (gibberellin, salicylic acid, methyl jasmonate, and abscisic acid) and abiotic stresses (heat, cold, salt, and drought), and the expression of nine candidate reference genes (eIF-4α, ACT7, TIP41, GAPDH, SAND, EF-1α, PP2A, TBP, and TUB) was evaluated. Stability of the genes was assessed using geNorm, NormFinder and BestKeeper. All the genes presented distinct expression profiles under the experimental conditions analyzed. Under abiotic stress conditions, ACT7 and PP2A genes displayed the maximum stability; PP2A and SAND were the most stable genes under hormone stimuli. Even though PP2A gene was most stable across all the samples, individual analysis revealed changes in expression profile. To further validate the suitability of the reference genes identified in this study, the expression level of M6PR gene under salt treatment was studied. Based on our data, we propose that it is essential to normalize the target gene expression with specific reference genes under different experimental conditions for most accurate results. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic analysis for reference genes under abiotic stress and hormone stimuli conditions in O. javanica. Solar greenhouses are important in the vegetable production and widely used for the counter-season production in the world. However, the CO 2 consumed by crops for photosynthesis after sunrise is not supplemented and becomes chronically deficient due to the airtight structure of solar greenhouses. Vegetable crops cannot effectively utilize light resources under low-CO 2 environment, and this incapability results in reduced photosynthetic efficiency and crop yield. We used cucumber as a model plant and generated several sets of transgenic cucumber plants overexpressing individual genes, including β-carbonic anhydrase 1 ( CsβCA1 ), β-carbonic anhydrase 4 ( CsβCA4 ), and sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphatase ( CsSBP ); fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase ( CsFBA ), and CsβCA1 co-expressing plants; CsβCA4 , CsSBP , and CsFBA co-expressing plants ( 14SF ). The results showed that the overexpression of CsβCA1 , CsβCA4 , and 14SF exhibited higher photosynthetic and biomass yield in transgenic cucumber plants under low-CO 2 environment. Further enhancements in photosynthesis and biomass yield were observed in 14SF transgenic plants under low-CO 2 environment. The net photosynthesis biomass yield and photosynthetic rate increased by 49% and 79% compared with those of the WT. However, the transgenic cucumbers of overexpressing CsFBA and CsSBP showed insignificant differences in photosynthesis and biomass yield compared with the WT under low-CO 2 .environment. Photosynthesis, fluorescence parameters, and enzymatic measurements indicated that CsβCA1 , CsβCA4 , CsSBP , and CsFBA had cumulative effects in photosynthetic carbon assimilation under low-CO 2 environment. Co-expression of this four genes ( CsβCA1 , CsβCA4 , CsSBP , and CsFBA ) can increase the carboxylation activity of RuBisCO and promote the regeneration of RuBP.
