Electric and magnetic modes establish the basis of the localized spoof surface plasmons (LSSPs), both of which are transverse electric (TE) modes. In this paper, the concept of transverse magnetic (TM) modes of LSSPs is proposed, and the double-layer planar-circular-grating resonator is demonstrated to support the TM modes in addition to the TE modes. In numerical simulations, the TE and TM modes were excited by a plane wave and an aperture, respectively, and their resonant frequencies and electromagnetic field distributions were demonstrated to be different. The electric field of the TE mode is parallel to the grating, while the magnetic field of the TM mode is parallel to the grating. In experiments, multiple TE and TM LSSPs modes were excited by a magnetic coupler. The magnetic coupler can be rotated to distinguish the TM modes from the TE ones, which provides conclusive evidence of the existence of the TM modes. Compared with the TE LSSPs modes, the TM LSSPs modes have the advantages of high sensitivity to the distance between layers and high quality factors (Q-factors), which hold promise for providing improvements on compact applications of LSSPs. A novel concept for suppressing the problem of multipath ghosts in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Through-Wall Imaging (TWI) is presented. Ghosts (i.e., false targets) mainly arise from the use of the Born or single-scattering approximations that lead to linearized imaging algorithms; however, these approximations neglect the effect of multiple scattering (or multipath) between the electromagnetic wavefield and the object under investigation. In contrast to existing methods of suppressing multipath ghosts, the proposed method models for the first time the reflectivity of the probed objects as a probability function up to a normalized factor and introduces the concept of random subaperture by randomly picking up measurement locations from the entire aperture. Thus, the final radar image is a joint probability distribution that corresponds to radar images derived from multiple random subapertures. Finally, numerical experiments are used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed methodology in GPR and TWI imaging.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in Foshan City were investigated in December 6 to 30 2008. The concentrations of VOCs in haze days were significantly higher than those in no-haze days. Toluene (68.93 microg x m(-3) +/- 37.78 microg x m(-3)) was the most abundant compound of VOCs in haze days and i-pentane (20.59 microg x m(-3) +/- 14.28 microg x m(-3)) was the most abundant compound in no-haze days, respectively. During haze episodes, the diurnal variations of alkanes and alkynes were not significantly; however, alkenes and aromatic hydrocarbon decreased significantly at noon. During no-haze episodes, the diurnal variations patterns of VOCs were stable. Propylene-equivalent concentrations in haze days were significantly higher than those in no-haze days, toluene was the most abundant compound of Propylene-equivalent concentration in haze days, followed by propene and ethene; propene was the most abundant compound in no-haze days, followed by ethene and 1-butene. High concentration of benzene (18.1 microg x m(-3)) in haze days posed a great health threat to public in Foshan city. Both diurnal variation of VOCs and measured ratios indicated vehicular emissions acted as the main sources of most VOCs and other sources like solvent application also contributed to VOCs (benzene and toluene).
