We study the electronic and magnetic states of as-grown and annealed $M\text{Fe}_2\text{O}_4$(111)/$\text{Al}_2\text{O}_3$(111) ($M=\text{Co, Ni}$) thin films with various thicknesses grown on Si(111) substrates with the $\gamma$-$\text{Al}_2\text{O}_3$(111) buffer layers by using x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), to investigate magnetically dead layers in these films. Although the magnetically dead layers in the as-grown samples are formed near the interface with the $\text{Al}_2\text{O}_3$ buffer layer, we reveal that ferrimagnetic order is partially recovered by post-deposition annealing at 973 K for 48 hours in air. By analyzing the line shapes of the XAS and XMCD spectra, we conclude that, in the dead layers, there are a significant number of vacancies at the $T_d$ sites of the spinel structure, which may be the microscopic origin of the degraded ferrimagnetic order in the $M\text{Fe}_2\text{O}_4$(111) thin films., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

Titanium disulfide TiS$_2$, which is a member of the layered transition-metal dichalcogenides with the 1T-CdI$_2$-type crystal structure, is known to exhibit a wide variety of magnetism through intercalating various kinds of transition-metal atoms of different concentrations. Among them, Fe-intercalated titanium disulfide Fe$_x$TiS$_2$ is known to be ferromagnetic with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and large coercive fields ($H_\text{c}$). In order to study the microscopic origin of the magnetism of this compound, we have performed X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements on single crystals of heavily intercalated Fe$_x$TiS$_2$ ($x\sim0.5$). The grown single crystals showed a strong PMA with a large $H_\text{c}$ of $\mu_0H_\text{c} \simeq 1.0\ \text{T}$. XAS and XMCD spectra showed that Fe is fully in the valence states of 2+ and that Ti is in an itinerant electronic state, indicating electron transfer from the intercalated Fe atoms to the host TiS$_2$ bands. The Fe$^{2+}$ ions were shown to have a large orbital magnetic moment of $\simeq 0.59\ \mu_\text{B}\text{/Fe}$, to which, combined with the spin-orbit interaction and the trigonal crystal field, we attribute the strong magnetic anisotropy of Fe$_x$TiS$_2$., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the new ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is studied by angle-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements. The large magnetic anisotropy with the anisotropy field of 0.85 T is deduced by fitting the Stoner-Wohlfarth model to the magnetic-field-angle dependence of the projected magnetic moment. Transverse XMCD spectra highlights the anisotropic distribution of Mn 3$d$ electrons, where the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals are less populated than the $d_{xy}$ state because of the $D_{2d}$ splitting arising from the elongated MnAs$_{4}$ tetrahedra. It is suggested that the magnetic anisotropy originates from the degeneracy lifting of $p$-$d_{xz}$, $d_{yz}$ hybridized states at the Fermi level and resulting energy gain due to spin-orbit coupling when spins are aligned along the $z$ direction.

SmO thin film is a new Kondo system showing a resistivity upturn around 10 K and was theoretically proposed to have a topologically nontrivial band structure. We have performed hard x-ray and soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy to elucidate the electronic structure of SmO. From the Sm 3$d$ core-level spectra, we have estimated the valence of Sm to be $\sim$2.96, proving that the Sm has a mixed valence. The valence-band photoemission spectra exhibit a clear Fermi edge originating from the Sm 5$d$-derived band. The present finding is consistent with the theory suggesting a possible topological state in SmO and show that rare-earth monoxides or their heterostructures can be a new playground for the interplay of strong electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling.

Room-temperature ferrimagnetism was discovered for the anti-site-disordered perovskite Ca2MnOsO6 with Tc = 305 K. Ca2MnOsO6 crystallizes into an orthorhombic structure with a space group of Pnma, in which Mn and Os share the oxygen-coordinated-octahedral site at an equal ratio without a noticeable ordered arrangement. The material is electrically semiconducting with variable-range-hopping behavior. X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirmed the trivalent state of the Mn and the pentavalent state of the Os. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy reveals that the Mn and Os magnetic moments are aligned antiferromagnetically, thereby classifying the material as a ferrimagnet which is in accordance with band structure calculations. It is intriguing that the magnetic signal of the Os is very weak, and that the observed total magnetic moment is primarily due to the Mn. The Tc = 305 K is the second highest in the material category of so-called disordered ferromagnets such as CaRu1-xMnxO3, SrRu1-xCrxO3, and CaIr1-xMnxO3, and hence, may support the development of spintronic oxides with relaxed requirements concerning the anti-site disorder of the magnetic ions.

In this study the metal-insulator transition in the square-lattice Hubbard model at half-filling is revisited in relation to the DOS and spectral functions by means of the ladder dual fermion approximation (LDFA). For this purpose, a new expression of the two-body Green's function in the form of resolvents is proposed, which provides tractable and efficient means to calculate the local vertex function with the Lanczos exact diagonalization (ED) method. This makes it possible to use the Lanczos ED method as a solver of the effective impurity Anderson model for LDFA, opening up the way to access low temperatures for these perturbative extensions of the dynamical mean field theory and to obtain accurate DOS and spectral functions on the real frequency axis by a new variant of the maximum entropy method. It is found that for $U\le 3.5t$, as temperature decreases, the pseudogap formation due to antiferromagnetic correlations in the quasiparticle peak of the spectral function occurs at the X point $[k=(\pi,0)]$, spreads through the Fermi surface and ends at the M$_2$ point $[k=(\pi/2,\pi/2)]$. The almost simultaneous creation of the pseudogap and the loss of the Fermi liquid feature is consistent with that expected in the Slater regime. Although the pseudogap still appears in the quasi-particle-like single peak for $U\ge 4.0t$, the Fermi-liquid feature is partially lost on the Fermi surface already at higher temperatures as expected in the Mott-Heisenberg regime, in which local spins are preformed at high temperatures. A sharp crossover from a pseudogap phase to a Mott insulator at finite $U^{*} \approx 4.7t$ is found to occur below the temperature of the pseudogap formation similar to a previous study with the non-linear $\sigma$ model approach., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures

We have probed the crystalline electric-field ground states of pure $|J = 7/2, J_z = \pm 5/2\rangle$ as well as the anisotropic $c$-$f$ hybridization in both valence fluctuating systems $\alpha$- and $\beta$-YbAlB$_4$ by linear polarization dependence of angle-resolved core level photoemission spectroscopy. Interestingly, the small but distinct difference between \abyb was found in the polar angle dependence of linear dichroism, indicating the difference in the anisotropy of $c$-$f$ hybridization which may be essential to a heavy Fermi liquid state in $\alpha$-YbAlB$_4$ and a quantum critical state in $\beta$-YbAlB$_4$.

Magnetic anisotropy of epitaxially grown thin films is affected by the strain from the substrates due to a combined effect of distorted electronic structure and spin-orbit interaction (SOI). As an inverse process, one expects an anisotropy of the electronic structure induced by magnetization in the presence of SOI. We have studied the charge-density anisotropy induced by magnetization in thin films of the ferromagnetic metal La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ via x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD). XMLD measurements on thin films with various thicknesses have shown that the XMLD intensity is proportional to the square of the ferromagnetic moment. Using the XMLD sum rule and cluster-model calculation, it has been shown that more Mn 3$d$ electrons are distributed in orbitals elongated along the direction parallel to the spin polarization than in orbitals elongated in the direction perpendicular to it. The cluster-model calculation has shown that the effect of tensile strain from the SrTiO$_3$ substrate on the XMLD spectra is also consistent with the observed XMLD spectral line shapes., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We study the electronic structure and the magnetic properties of epitaxial (Ni1-xCox)Fe2O4(111) layers (x = 0 - 1) with thicknesses d = 1.7 - 5.2 nm grown on Al2O3(111)/Si(111) structures, to achieve a high value of inversion parameter y, which is the inverse-to-normal spinel-structure ratio, and hence to obtain good magnetic properties even when the thickness is thin enough for electron tunneling as a spin filter. We revealed the crystallographic (octahedral Oh or tetrahedral Td) sites and the valences of the Fe, Co, and Ni cations using experimental soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra and configuration-interaction cluster-model calculation. In all the (Ni1-xCox)Fe2O4 layers with d = about 4 nm, all Ni cations occupy the Ni2+ (Oh) site, whereas Co cations occupy the three different Co2+ (Oh), Co2+ (Td), and Co3+ (Oh) sites with constant occupancies. According to these features, the occupancy of the Fe3+ (Oh) cations decreases and that of the Fe3+ (Td) cations increases with decreasing x. Consequently, we obtained a systematic increase of y with decreasing x and achieved the highest y value of 0.91 for the NiFe2O4 layer with d = 3.5 nm. From the d dependences of y and magnetization in the d range of 1.7 - 5.2 nm, a magnetically dead layer is present near the NiFe2O4/Al2O3 interface, but its influence on the magnetization was significantly suppressed compared with the case of CoFe2O4 layers reported previously [Y. K. Wakabayasi et al., Phys. Rev. B 96, 104410 (2017)], due to the high site selectivity of the Ni cations. Since our epitaxial NiFe2O4 layer with d = 3.5 nm has a high y values (0.91) and a reasonably large magnetization (180 emu/cc), it is expected to exhibit a strong spin filter effect, which can be used for efficient spin injection into Si., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1704.01712

We have investigated the orbital states of the orbital-glassy (short-range orbital ordered) spinel vanadate Co$_{1.21}$V$_{1.79}$O$_{4}$ using x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and subsequent configuration-interaction cluster-model calculation. From the sign of the XMCD spectra, it was found that the spin magnetic moment of the Co ion is aligned parallel to the applied magnetic field and that of the V ion anti-parallel to it, consistent with neutron scattering studies. It was revealed that the excess Co ions at the octahedral site take the trivalent low-spin state, and induce a random potential to the V sublattice. The orbital magnetic moment of the V ion is small although finite, suggesting that the ordered orbitals mainly consists of real-number orbitals., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Here we present linear and circular polarized soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data at the Ce $M_{4,5}$ edges of the electron (Ir) and hole-doped (Re) Kondo semiconductor CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$. Both substitutions have a strong impact on the unusual high N$\acute{e}$el temperature, $T_N$=28.5\,K, and also the direction of the ordered moment in case of Ir. The substitution dependence of the linear dichroism is weak thus validating the crystal-field description of CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$ being representative for the Re and Ir substituted compounds. The impact of electron- and hole-doping on the hybridization between conduction and 4$f$ electrons is related to the amount of $f^0$ in the ground state and reduction of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. A relationship of $cf$-hybridization strength and enhanced $T_N$ is discussed. The direction and doping dependence of the circular dichroism is in agreement with strong Kondo screening along the crystallographic $a$ direction., Comment: 6 pagers, 6 figures

We report experimentally observed linear dichroism in angle-resolved core-level photoemission spectra of PrIr2Zn20 and PrB6 in cubic symmetry. The different anisotropic 4f charge distributions between the compounds due to the crystalline-electric-field splitting are responsible for the difference in the linear dichroism, which has been verified by spectral simulations with the full multiplet theory for a single-site Pr3+ ion in cubic symmetry. The observed linear dichroism and polarization-dependent spectra in two different photoelectron directions for PrIr2Zn20 are reproduced by theoretical analysis for the Gamma_3 ground state, whereas those of the Pr 3d and 4d core levels indicate the Gamma_5 ground state for PrB6., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Epitaxial CoFe2O4/Al2O3 bilayers are expected to be highly efficient spin injectors into Si owing to the spin filter effect of CoFe2O4. To exploit the full potential of this system, understanding the microscopic origin of magnetically dead layers at the CoFe2O4/Al2O3 interface is necessary. In this paper, we study the crystallographic and electronic structures and the magnetic properties of CoFe2O4(111) layers with various thicknesses (thickness d = 1.4, 2.3, 4, and 11 nm) in the epitaxial CoFe2O4(111)/Al2O3(111)/Si(111) structures using soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) combined with cluster-model calculation. The magnetization of CoFe2O4 measured by XMCD gradually decreases with decreasing thickness d and finally a magnetically dead layer is clearly detected at d = 1.4 nm. The magnetically dead layer has frustration of magnetic interactions which is revealed from comparison between the magnetizations at 300 and 6 K. From analysis using configuration-interaction cluster-model calculation, the decrease of d leads to a decrease in the inverse-to-normal spinel structure ratio and also a decrease in the average valence of Fe at the octahedral sites. These results strongly indicate that the magnetically dead layer at the CoFe2O4/Al2O3 interface originates from various complex networks of superexchange interactions through the change in the crystallographic and electronic structures. Furthermore, from comparison of the magnetic properties between d = 1.4 and 2.3 nm, it is found that ferrimagnetic order of the magnetically dead layer at d = 1.4 nm is restored by the additional growth of the 0.9-nm-thick CoFe2O4 layer on it.

We revisit the formulations and simulations of angular distributions in polarization-dependent core-level photoemission spectra of strongly correlated electron systems, in order to explain the recently discovered linear dichroism (LD) in the core-level photoemission of 4f-based rare-earth compounds. Owing to the selection rules for the optical process of core-level excitations, the LD originating from the anisotropic outer localized charge distributions determined by the ground-state orbital symmetry can be observed. Our simulations show that core d-level excitations are essential for the LD in localized ions having a cubic symmetry, which is absent in the p-orbital excitations., Comment: 5 pages with 2 figures

We have examined the local 3d electronic structures of Co-Au multinuclear complexes with the medicinal molecules D-penicillaminate (D-pen) [Co{Au(PPh3)(D-pen)}2]ClO4 and [Co3{Au3(tdme)(D-pen)3}2] by Co L_2,3-edge soft X-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopy, where PPh3 denotes triphenylphosphine and tdme stands for 1,1,1-tris[(diphenylphosphino)methyl]ethane. The Co L_2,3-edge XAS spectra indicate the localized ionic 3d electronic states in both materials. The experimental spectra are well explained by spectral simulation for a localized Co ion under ligand fields with the full multiplet theory, which verifies that the ions are in the low-spin Co3+ state in the former compound and in the high-spin Co2+ state in the latter., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. We have successfully observed linear dichroism in angle-resolved Yb3+ 3d5/2 core-level photoemission spectra for YbB12 in cubic symmetry. Its anisotropic 4f charge distribution due to the crystal-field splitting is responsible for the linear dichroism, which has been verified by spectral simulations using ionic calculations with the full multiplet theory for a single-site Yb3+ ion in cubic symmetry. We show that the strongly correlated 4f-orbital symmetry of the ground state is revealed by linear dichroism in core-level photoemission spectra as we have discovered for YbRh2Si2 and YbCu2Si2. Theoretical analysis tells us that the linear dichroism reflects the anisotropic charge distributions resulting from crystalline electric field. We have successfully determined the ground-state 4f symmetry for both compounds from the polarization-dependent angle-resolved core-level spectra at a low temperature well below the first excitation energy. The excited-state symmetry is also probed by temperature dependence of the linear dichroism where the high measuring temperatures are of the order of the crystal-field-splitting energies., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to be published in J. Electronic state and the Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe_3O_4) are studied using a spinless three-band Hubbard model for 3d electrons on the B sites with the Hartree-Fock approximation and the exact diagonalisation method. Complex-orbital, e.g., 1/sqrt(2)[|zx> + i |yz>], ordered (COO) states having noncollinear orbital moments ~ 0.4 mu_B on the B sites are obtained with the cubic lattice structure of the high-temperature phase. The COO state is a novel form of magnetic ordering within the orbital degree of freedom. It arises from the formation of Hund's second rule states of spinless pseudo-d molecular orbitals in the Fe_4 tetrahedral units of the B sites and ferromagnetic alignment of their fictitious orbital moments. A COO state with longer periodicity is obtained with pseudo-orthorhombic Pmca and Pmc2_1 structures for the low-temperature phase. The state spontaneously lowers the crystal symmetry to the monoclinic and explains experimentally observed rhombohedral cell deformation and Jahn-Teller like distortion. From these findings, we consider that at the Verwey transition temperature, the COO state remaining to be short-range order impeded by dynamical lattice distortion in high temperature is developed into that with long-range order coupled with the monoclinic lattice distortion., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in J. The metal-insulator transition in VO2 was investigated using the three-band Hubbard model, in which the degeneracy of the 3d orbitals, the on-site Coulomb and exchange interactions, and the effects of lattice distortion were considered. A new scenario on the phase transition is proposed, where the increase in energy level separation among the t_2g orbitals caused by the lattice distortion triggers an abrupt change in the electronic configuration in doubly occupied sites from an S=1 Hund's coupling state to a spin S=0 state with much larger energy, and this strongly suppresses the charge fluctuation. Although the material is expected to be a Mott-Hubbard insulator in the insulating phase, the metal-to-insulator transition is not caused by an increase in relative strength of the Coulomb interaction against the electron hopping as in the usual Mott transition, but by the level splitting among the t_2g orbitals against the on-site exchange interaction. The metal-insulator transition in Ti2O3 can also be explained by the same scenario. Such a large change in the 3d orbital occupation at the phase transition can be detected by linear dichroic V 2p x-ray absorption measurements., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to be published in J. The 3d electronic structure and phase transition in pure and Cr doped V2O3 are theoretically investigated in relation to the 3d spin-orbit interaction and lattice distortion. A model consisting of the nearest-neighbor V ion pair with full degeneracy of the 3d orbitals is studied within the many-body point of view. It is shown that each V ion with S=1 spin state has a large orbital magnetic moment $\sim 0.7 \mu_{\rm B}$ and no orbital ordering occurs in the antiferromagnetic insulating (AFI) phase. The anomalous resonant Bragg reflection found in the AFI phase is attributed to the magnetic ordering. In the AFI and paramagnetic insulating (PI) phases, Jahn-Teller like lattice instability leads to tilting of the V ion pairs from the corundum c-axis and this causes large difference in the orbital occupation between the paramagnetic metal and the insulating phases, which is consistent with linear dichroic V 2p XAS measurements. To understand the AFI to PI transition, a model spin Hamiltonian is also proposed. The transition is found to be simultaneous order-disorder transition of the magnetic moments and tilting directions of the V ion pairs. Softening of elastic constant C44 and abrupt change in short range spin correlations observed at the transition are also explained., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures

It has been generally accepted that the threshold structure observed in the oxygen K edge X-ray absorption spectrum in 3d transition metal oxides represents the electronic structure of the 3d transition metal. There is, however, no consensus about the correct description. We present an interpretation, which includes both ground state hybridization and electron correlation. It is based on a configuration interaction cluster calculation using a MO6 cluster. The oxygen K edge spectrum is calculated by annihilating a ligand hole in the ground state and is compared to calculations representing inverse photoemission experiments in which a 3d transition metal electron is added. Clear differences are observed related to the amount of ligand hole created in the ground state. Two "rules" connected to this are discussed. Comparison with experimental data of some early transition metal compounds is made and shows that this simple cluster approach explains the experimental features quite well., Comment: 10 pages, submitted to Phys.
