Abstract

The human dosimetry for electromagnetic field exposure is an essential task to develop exposure guidelines/standards for human safety as well as product safety assessment. At frequencies from a few hundred Hz to 10 MHz, the adverse effect to be protected is the stimulation of the peripheral nervous system. The in situ electric field in the skin is used as a surrogate of nerve activation. In the low-frequency dosimetry, a high but inaccurate in situ electric field has been reported at positions where a skin-to-skin contact exists, whose relation to the stimulation is controversial. One of the reasons for high electric fields may be attributable to the current resolution of anatomical models. In this study, we first evaluate the stimulation threshold at postures of skin-to-skin contact experimentally for different hand/finger positions to represent skin touching/non-touching scenarios. We confirm that the skin-to-skin contact does not lower the threshold current of magnetic stimulation devices needed to induce pain. Second, a new method is proposed for hand modeling to configure different finger positions using static hand models with similar postures to the experiments. We compute the in situ electric field at skin-to-skin contact for the different hand posture scenarios that indicate an excessive raise of the electric field in skin-to-skin regions that is not justified by the experiments. The comparison suggests that a high in situ electric field in the skin would be caused by poor modeling of the skin layers, which is not enough to represent in a resolution of the order of a millimeter. Abstract

TERT promoter mutations are commonly associated with 1p/19q codeletion in IDH-mutated gliomas. However, whether these mutations have an impact on patient survival independent of 1p/19q codeletion is unknown. In this study, we investigated the impact of TERT promoter mutations on survival in IDH-mutated glioma cases. Detailed clinical information and molecular status data were collected for a cohort of 560 adult patients with IDH-mutated gliomas. Among these patients, 279 had both TERT promoter mutation and 1p/19q codeletion, while 30 had either TERT promoter mutation (n = 24) or 1p/19q codeletion (n = 6) alone. A univariable Cox proportional hazard analysis for survival using clinical and genetic factors indicated that a Karnofsky performance status score (KPS) of 90 or 100, WHO grade II or III, TERT promoter mutation, 1p/19q codeletion, radiation therapy, and extent of resection (90-100%) were associated with favorable prognosis (p

Abstract

We present the photoreaction of newly prepared bis(6,6'‐dimethyl‐2,2'‐bipyridine)(oxalato)rhodium(III) ([Rh(N N)2(ox)]+) in CD3OD. Photoirradiation of this complex causes the dissociation of ox, followed by the formation of the unprecedented Rh(III) complex with Rh−H and Rh−C σ bonds, [Rh(N N)(C N)(H)(CD3OD)]+ (C N=[6,6'‐dimethyl‐2,2'‐bipyridine]‐3‐yl‐κC3,κN1'). This hydride formation and cyclometallation spontaneously proceed owing to the conflict between the steric hindrance arising from the methyl groups of N N and the driving force for the structural change due to [Rh(N N)2]+ formation. Although [Rh(N N)(C N)(H)(CD3OD)]+ is initially converted to [Rh(N N)2]+ by photoirradiation, it is immediately regenerated by the rollover cyclometallation of the [Rh(N N)2]+ complex. [Rh(N N)(C N)(H)(CD3OD)]+ undergoes H/D exchange for the H atoms in the Rh−H bond and at the 3, 3'‐positions of the N N ligand during the photoirradiation. DFT calculations predict with reasonable certainty the spontaneous structural change of [Rh(N N)2]+ to [Rh(N N)(C N)(H)(CD3OD)]+ and the subsequent photodriven Rh−C bond rupture leading to the formation of [Rh(N N)2]+ accompanied by H/D exchange reactions. Abstract

The linkage between growth rate and feeding success has been shown to strengthen the effects of early growth rate on later growth rate in the early life history of fish. However, the growth–feeding linkage largely remains to be tested at the individual level within the same populations/cohorts. We examined the growth–feeding linkage for multiple populations/cohorts in Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus larvae and Pacific round herring Etrumeus micropus larvae, through otolith microstructure analysis, based on samples collected from the commercial fishery for larval fish in the Kii Channel, Japan. The three growth–feeding mechanisms, which are based on the respective potential advantages of larger somatic size, higher growth rate, and earlier morphological development for achieving feeding success, were tested to understand how growth rate relates to feeding success. The "somatic size" mechanism was supported for all of six samples for anchovy larvae and three of four samples for round herring larvae. The "growth rate" mechanism was supported for two of six samples for anchovy larvae and three of four samples for round herring larvae. The "morphological development" mechanism was supported for three of four samples for anchovy larvae and all of three samples for round herring larvae. Overall, the present analysis supported the growth–feeding linkage but revealed the dynamics of the growth–feeding mechanisms. All the mechanisms were shown to operate at least for certain populations/cohorts, but none of them were universally effective over all populations/cohorts across the two species. Abstract

The α-oxyalkylation of aryl chlorides with ethers and alcohols using a small amount of a peroxide was found to be induced by photoirradiation. The reaction proceeds through a homolytic aromatic substitution (HAS) mechanism consisting of addition of an α-oxyalkyl radical to an aryl chloride and elimination of the chlorine atom to give the α-oxyalkylation product, where photoirradiation is considered to effect not only the initiation step to facilitate homolysis of a peroxide, but also the propagating radical chain.
