Abstract: The PHENIX experiment measured the centrality dependence of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV Au$+$Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are well represented by L\'evy-stable source distributions. The extracted source parameters are the correlation-strength parameter $\lambda$, the L\'evy index of stability $\alpha$, and the L\'evy-scale parameter $R$ as a function of transverse mass $m_T$ and centrality. The $\lambda(m_T)$ parameter is constant at larger values of $m_T$, but decreases as $m_T$ decreases. The L\'evy scale parameter $R(m_T)$ decreases with $m_T$ and exhibits proportionality to the length scale of the nuclear overlap region. The L\'evy exponent $\alpha(m_T)$ is independent of $m_T$ within uncertainties in each investigated centrality bin, but shows a clear centrality dependence. At all centralities, the L\'evy exponent $\alpha$ is significantly different from that of Gaussian ($\alpha=2$) or Cauchy ($\alpha=1$) source distributions. Comparisons to the predictions of Monte-Carlo simulations of resonance-decay chains show that in all but the most peripheral centrality class (50%-60%), the obtained results are inconsistent with the measurements, unless a significant reduction of the in-medium mass of the $\eta'$ meson is included. In each centrality class, the best value of the in-medium $\eta'$ mass is compared to the mass of the $\eta$ meson, as well as to several theoretical predictions that consider restoration of $U_A(1)$ symmetry in hot hadronic matter., Comment: 401 authors from 75 institutions, 20 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. Abstract: High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results better quantify how the yield of low-$p_T$ associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects., Comment: 534 authors from 83 institutions, 12 pages, 7 figures. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. Abstract: We report on the observation of previously-unknown isotope $^{21}$Al, the first unbound aluminum isotope located beyond the proton dripline. The $^{21}$Al nucleus decays by one-proton (1p) emission, and its in-flight decays were detected by tracking trajectories of all decay products with micro-strip silicon detectors. The 1p-emission processes were studied by analyses of the measured angular correlations of decay products $^{20}$Mg+p. The 1p-decay energies of ground and low-lying excited states of $^{21}$Al, its mass excess and proton separation energy value $S_p$=$-1.1(1)$ MeV were determined., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: The PHENIX experiment has performed a systematic study of identified charged-hadron ($\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p$, $\bar{p}$) production at midrapidity in $p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV. Identified charged-hadron invariant transverse-momentum ($p_T$) and transverse-mass ($m_T$) spectra are presented and interpreted in terms of radially expanding thermalized systems. The particle ratios of $K/\pi$ and $p/\pi$ have been measured in different centrality ranges of large (Cu$+$Au, U$+$U) and small ($p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au) collision systems. The values of $K/\pi$ ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. However the values of $p/\pi$ ratios measured in large collision systems reach the values of $\approx0.6$, which is $\approx2$ times larger than in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. These results can be qualitatively understood in terms of the baryon enhancement expected from hadronization by recombination. Identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors ($R_{AB}$) are also presented. Enhancement of proton $R_{AB}$ values over meson $R_{AB}$ values was observed in central $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions. The proton $R_{AB}$ values measured in $p$$+$Al collision system were found to be consistent with $R_{AB}$ values of $\phi$, $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, and $\pi^0$ mesons, which may indicate that the size of the system produced in $p$$+$Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production., Comment: 480 authors from 78 institutions, 18 pages, 6 tables, 16 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. Abstract: At the FRS Ion Catcher (FRS-IC), projectile and fission fragments are produced at relativistic energies, separated in-flight, energy-bunched, slowed down, and thermalized in the ultra-pure helium gas-filled cryogenic stopping cell (CSC). Thermalized nuclei are extracted from the CSC using a combination of DC and RF electric fields and gas flow. This CSC also serves as the prototype CSC for the Super-FRS, where exotic nuclei will be produced at unprecedented rates making it possible to go towards the extremes of the nuclear chart. Therefore, it is essential to efficiently extract thermalized exotic nuclei from the CSC under high beam rate conditions, in order to use the rare exotic nuclei which come as cocktail beams. The extraction efficiency dependence on the intensity of the impinging beam into the CSC was studied with a primary beam of 238U and its fragments. Tests were done with two different versions of the DC electrode structure inside the cryogenic chamber, the standard 1 m long and a short 0.5 m long DC electrode. In contrast to the rate capability of 10^4 ions/s with the long DC electrode, results show no extraction efficiency loss up to the rate of 2x10^5 ions/s with the new short DC electrode. This order of magnitude increase of the rate capability paves the way for new experiments at the FRS-IC, including exotic nuclei studies with in-cell multi-nucleon transfer reactions. The results further validate the design concept of the CSC for the Super-FRS, which was developed to effectively manage beams of even higher intensities.

Abstract: Low-energy investigations on rare ion beams are often limited by the available intensity and purity of the ion species in focus. Here, we present the first application of a technique that combines in-flight production at relativistic energies with subsequent secondary beam storage, accumulation and finally deceleration to the energy of interest. Using the FRS and ESR facilities at GSI, this scheme was pioneered to provide a secondary beam of $^{118}$Te$^{52+}$ for the measurement of nuclear proton-capture at energies of 6 and 7 MeV/u. The technique provided stored beam intensities of about $10^6$ ions at high purity and brilliance, representing a major step towards low-energy nuclear physics studies using rare ion beams.

Abstract: This study developed a novel method for detecting hypernuclear events recorded in nuclear emulsion sheets using machine learning techniques. The artificial neural network-based object detection model was trained on surrogate images created through Monte Carlo simulations and image-style transformations using generative adversarial networks. The performance of the proposed model was evaluated using $\alpha$-decay events obtained from the J-PARC E07 emulsion data. The model achieved approximately twice the detection efficiency of conventional image processing and reduced the time spent on manual visual inspection by approximately 1/17. The established method was successfully applied to the detection of hypernuclear events. The circadian patterns of pain were appraised over a 7-day period by quantifying the intensity of pain at six temporal junctures each day using a 10-cm visual analog scale (VAS). Cluster analysis was performed using six standardized variables derived from the VAS score of each participant at six designated time points to identify cohorts with analogous circadian rhythms of pain. The clusters were discerned for the 7- and 3-day assessments (Tuesday–Thursday, Friday–Sunday, and Sunday–Tuesday), according to the research objectives. Cohen’s kappa coefficient was calculated to gauge the intra-observer variability to assess the consistency between the outcomes of the cluster analysis for the 7-day assessment and each of the 3-day assessments.Results: The highest Cohen’s kappa coefficient was observed for the 3-day evaluation spanning from Friday to Sunday, indicating a substantial concordance with the results of the 7-day assessment.Conclusion: Our results suggest that it may be prudent to consider implementing a condensed 3-day evaluation of the circadian rhythm of pain that is tailored to individual characteristics. This approach will allow a better understanding of the diurnal rhythms of chronic pain in patients and implement more targeted and specific pain management strategies. The primary objective was to compare the accuracy of three formulas (IA; Sanders, Retzlaff, and Kraff/Theoretical (SRK/T); and Barrett Universal II (BUII)), in achieving emmetropia in eyes implanted with TFNT lenses (Alcon).Patients and Methods: A total of 145 eyes of 145 patients were included in the evaluation. Preoperative data were obtained from IOLMaster 700, while intraoperative data were collected from ORA SYSTEMTM. Visual acuity ≥ 0.8 at the 3-month post-surgery mark was confirmed. We assessed refractive prediction error (RPE), which is the difference between predicted refraction (PR) and postoperative subjective refraction. This evaluation aimed to identify the optimal IOL power with the implemented algorithm.Results: Among the 145 eyes evaluated, 55.9%, 78.7%, and 97.2% achieved postoperative subjective refraction within ± 0.13 Diopters (D), ± 0.25 D, and ± 0.50 D, respectively. The percentages of eyes within ± 0.25 D of PR varied by formula type, with values of 57%, 57%, and 54% for IA, BUII, and SRK/T, respectively. For eyes with short to medium axial length (AL< 26.00 mm), the percentages within ± 0.25 D of RPE were 52%, 58%, and 58% for IA, SRK/T, and BUII, respectively. In contrast, for eyes with long axial length (≥ 26.00 mm) the percentages were 68%, 52%, and 45% for IA, BUII, and SRK/T, respectively.Conclusion: The proposed majority decision algorithm incorporating IA and two IOL frequency formulas was effective in reducing postoperative refractive error. IA was particularly beneficial for eyes with long axial length. Abstract: This paper reports the development and detailed properties of about 13 tons of gadolinium sulfate octahydrate, $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$, which has been dissolved into Super-Kamiokande (SK) in the summer of 2020. We evaluate the impact of radioactive impurities in $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ on DSNB searches and solar neutrino observation and confirm the need to reduce radioactive and fluorescent impurities by about three orders of magnitude from commercially available high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$. In order to produce ultra-high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$, we have developed a method to remove impurities from gadolinium oxide, Gd$_2$O$_3$, consisting of acid dissolution, solvent extraction, and pH control processes, followed by a high-purity sulfation process. All of the produced ultra-high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ is assayed by ICP-MS and HPGe detectors to evaluate its quality. Because of the long measurement time of HPGe detectors, we have employed several underground laboratories for making parallel measurements including LSC in Spain, Boulby in the UK, and Kamioka in Japan. In the first half of production, the measured batch purities were found to be consistent with the specifications. However,in the latter half, the $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ contained one order of magnitude more $^{228}$Ra than the budgeted mean contamination. This was correlated with the corresponding characteristics of the raw material Gd$_2$O$_3$, in which an intrinsically large contamination was present. Based on their modest impact on SK physics, they were nevertheless introduced into the detector. Abstract: The PHENIX experiment reports systematic measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of $\phi$-meson production in asymmetric Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV and in U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=193 GeV. Measurements were performed via the $\phi\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ decay channel at midrapidity $|\eta|<0.35$. Features of $\phi$-meson production measured in Cu$+$Cu, Cu$+$Au, Au$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions were found to not depend on the collision geometry, which was expected because the yields are averaged over the azimuthal angle and follow the expected scaling with nuclear-overlap size. The elliptic flow of the $\phi$ meson in Cu$+$Au, Au$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions scales with second-order-participant eccentricity and the length scale of the nuclear-overlap region (estimated with the number of participating nucleons). At moderate $p_T$, $\phi$-meson production measured in Cu$+$Au and U$+$U collisions is consistent with coalescence-model predictions, whereas at high $p_T$ the production is in agreement with expectations for in-medium energy loss of parent partons prior to their fragmentation. Abstract: The recently discovered kagome superconductors $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs) possess a unique band structure with van Hove singularities and Dirac dispersions, in which unusual charge-density-wave (CDW) orders with time-reversal and rotational symmetry breaking have been reported. One of the most crucial unresolved issues is identifying the symmetry of the superconductivity that develops inside the CDW phase. Theory predicts a variety of unconventional superconducting symmetries, including exotic states with chiral and topological properties accompanied by a sign-changing superconducting gap. Experimentally, however, the phase information on the superconducting gap in $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ is still lacking. Here we report the electron irradiation effects in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ using introduced impurities as a phase-sensitive probe of superconductivity. Our magnetic penetration depth measurements reveal that with increasing impurities, a highly anisotropic fully-gapped state changes gradually to an isotropic full-gap state without passing through a nodal state. Furthermore, transport measurements under high pressure show that the double superconducting dome in the pressure-temperature phase diagram survives against sufficient impurities. These results are strong bulk evidence that CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is a non-chiral, anisotropic $s$-wave superconductor with no sign change both at ambient and high pressure, which provides a clue to understanding the relationship between CDW and superconductivity in kagome superconductors., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: Charge-changing cross sections $\sigma_\mathrm{CC}$ for $^{42\textrm{--}51}$Ca on a carbon target at around 280~MeV/nucleon have been measured. The measured $\sigma_\mathrm{CC}$ values differ significantly from the previously developed calculations based on the Glauber model. However, through introduction of the charged-particle evaporation effect induced by the neutron-removal reaction in addition to the Glauber-model calculation, experimental $\sigma_\mathrm{CC}$ values on $^{12}$C at around 300~MeV/nucleon for nuclides from C to Fe isotopes are all reproduced with approximately 1\% accuracy. This proposed model systematically reproduces $\sigma_\mathrm{CC}$ data without phenomenological corrections, and can also explain experimental $\sigma_\mathrm{CC}$ values obtained in other energy regions., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

The short-term safety, efficacy, and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) with filgotinib from Phase 2b/3 clinical trials (DARWIN 1 and 2; FINCH 1, 2, and 3) are described in patients who inadequately responded to methotrexate (MTX) and biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs or who were naïve to MTX. This article reviews the safety and efficacy from the long-term extension (LTE) trials, DARWIN 3 (N=739) and FINCH 4 (N=2731), and PROs across the filgotinib development program in RA. Overall, in the DARWIN clinical trials (conducted from 2013– 2023), patients received their LTE treatment for ≤ 8 years, while in the FINCH trials (ongoing from 2016– 2025), patients received filgotinib treatment for ≤ 6 years in the LTE. The longer-term safety profile and consistent, sustained efficacy (American College of Rheumatology 20/50/70, Clinical Disease Activity Index, and Disease Activity Scale in 28 joints with C-reactive protein response rates) of filgotinib were largely similar to those observed in the shorter-term parent trials ≤ 52 weeks. PRO results from the parent trials showed improvements in patients’ quality of life with filgotinib treatment, which compared to or exceeded improvements seen with placebo and active comparators (adalimumab, MTX). Filgotinib has a higher specificity for JAK1 compared with other therapeutic treatments, leading to reduced inhibition of JAK2/3–dependent pathways, potentially providing a distinct safety profile. Despite this, very few studies examine the critical changes in gene expression and DNA repair activity following recommended topical solar protection and repair strategies to ameliorate the harmful effects of ultraviolet, visible light and near-infrared radiation.Purpose: To investigate alterations in gene expression following topical solar protection and solar repair strategies.Methods: Using epidermal keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts derived from a 3-dimensional reconstructed human skin model, gene expression was assessed via the Genemarkers Standard Skin Panel using 112 genes deploying two analytical techniques: DNA microarray and quantitative real-time PCR exploration. Tissues were inoculated with products then collected after 24 hours following application of solar protection formulations and 16 hours following solar repair formulations (The Essential Six, RATIONALE, Victoria, Australia).Results: A DNA microarray revealed 67 genes that were significantly up-regulated or down-regulated following the treatment. The quantitative real-time PCR revealed that, in comparison to the control, the genes encoding Intercellular Adhesion Molecule 1 (ICAM1), Metallothionein 1A (MT1A), Prostaglandin-Endoperoxide Synthase 1 (PTGS2), Late Cornified Envelope 3D (LCE3D), Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor (PPARD), and Granulocyte/Macrophage Colony Stimulating Factor 2 (GM-CSF2) have been up-regulated following usage of the solar protection regime, 1.87, 861.16, 4.34, 1.91, 1.06, and 3.6, respectively. Abstract: The fragment separator FRS has been for the first time used to measure the (n,p) and (p,n)-type isobaric charge-exchange cross sections of stable 112,124Sn isotopes accelerated at 1A GeV with an uncertainty of 3% and to separate quasi-elastic and inelastic components in the missing-energy spectra of the ejectiles. The inelastic contribution can be associated to the excitation of isobar {\Delta}(1232) resonances and to the pion emission in s-wave, both in the target and projectile nuclei, while the quasi-elastic contribution is associated to the nuclear spin-isospin response of nucleon-hole excitations. The data lead to interesting results where we observe a clear quenching of the quasi-elastic component and their comparisons to theoretical calculations demonstrate that the baryonic resonances can be excited in the target and projectile nuclei. To go further in this investigation, we propose to study the excitation of baryonic resonances taking advantage of the combination of high-resolving power magnetic spectrometers with the WASA calorimeter. These new measurements will allow us to determine the momenta of the ejectiles and pions emitted in coincidence after the single isobaric charge-exchange collisions, providing us unique opportunities to study the evolution of the baryonic resonance dynamics with the neutron-proton asymmetry through the use of exotic radioactive ion beams., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2004.06404

Abstract: The PHENIX collaboration presents a systematic study of $\pi^0$ production from $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0%--100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0%--100% collisions, the nuclear modification factors, $R_{xA}$, are consistent with unity for $p_T$ above 8 GeV/$c$, but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high-$p_T$-$\pi^0$ production, the nucleons in the $d$ and $^3$He interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counter intuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower $p_T$ resemble the Cronin effect -- an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as $p$$+$Au $>$ $d$$+$Au $>$ $^{3}$He$+$Au $>$ $p$$+$Al. For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower $p_T$., Comment: 554 authors from 81 institutions, 21 pages, 13 figures, and 3 tables. Abstract: Interaction cross sections for $^{42\textrm{-}51}$Ca on a carbon target at 280 MeV/nucleon have been measured for the first time. The neutron number dependence of derived root-mean-square matter radii shows a significant increase beyond the neutron magic number $N=28$. Furthermore, this enhancement of matter radii is much larger than that of the previously measured charge radii, indicating a novel growth in neutron skin thickness. A simple examination based on the Fermi-type distribution, and the Mean-Field calculations point out that this anomalous enhancement of the nuclear size beyond $N=28$ results from an enlargement of the core by a sudden increase in the surface diffuseness of the neutron density distribution, which implies the swelling of the bare $^{48}$Ca core in Ca isotopes beyond $N=28$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: We report the analysis of planetary microlensing event OGLE-2018-BLG-1185, which was observed by a large number of ground-based telescopes and by the $Spitzer$ Space Telescope. The ground-based light curve indicates a low planet-host star mass ratio of $q = (6.9 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-5}$, which is near the peak of the wide-orbit exoplanet mass-ratio distribution. We estimate the host star and planet masses with a Bayesian analysis using the measured angular Einstein radius under the assumption that stars of all masses have an equal probability to host this planet. The flux variation observed by $Spitzer$ was marginal, but still places a constraint on the microlens parallax. Imposing a conservative constraint that this flux variation should be $\Delta f_{\rm Spz} < 4$ instrumental flux units indicates a host mass of $M_{\rm host} = 0.37^{+0.35}_{-0.21}\ M_\odot$ and a planet mass of $m_{\rm p} = 8.4^{+7.9}_{-4.7}\ M_\oplus$. A Bayesian analysis including the full parallax constraint from $Spitzer$ suggests smaller host star and planet masses of $M_{\rm host} = 0.091^{+0.064}_{-0.018}\ M_\odot$ and $m_{\rm p} = 2.1^{+1.5}_{-0.4}\ M_\oplus$, respectively. Abstract: When a crystal becomes thinner and thinner to the atomic level, peculiar phenomena discretely depending on its layer-numbers (n) start to appear. The symmetry and wave functions strongly reflect the layer-numbers and stacking order, which brings us a potential of realizing new properties and functions that are unexpected in either bulk or simple monolayer. Multilayer WTe2 is one such example exhibiting unique ferroelectricity and non-linear transport properties related to the antiphase stacking and Berry-curvature dipole. Here we investigate the electronic band dispersions of multilayer WTe2 (2-5 layers), by performing laser-based micro-focused angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy on exfoliated-flakes that are strictly sorted by n and encapsulated by graphene. We clearly observed the insulator-semimetal transition occurring between 2- and 3-layers, as well as the 30-70 meV spin-splitting of valence bands manifesting in even n as a signature of stronger structural asymmetry. Abstract: The upgrade of the ALICE TPC will allow the experiment to cope with the high interaction rates foreseen for the forthcoming Run 3 and Run 4 at the CERN LHC. In this article, we describe the design of new readout chambers and front-end electronics, which are driven by the goals of the experiment. Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors arranged in stacks containing four GEMs each, and continuous readout electronics based on the SAMPA chip, an ALICE development, are replacing the previous elements. The construction of these new elements, together with their associated quality control procedures, is explained in detail. Finally, the readout chamber and front-end electronics cards replacement, together with the commissioning of the detector prior to installation in the experimental cavern, are presented. Abstract: Mass measurements of the $^{69}$As, $^{70,71}$Se and $^{71}$Br isotopes, produced via fragmentation of a $^{124}$Xe primary beam at the FRS at GSI, have been performed with the multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) of the FRS Ion Catcher with an unprecedented mass resolving power of almost 1,000,000. For the $^{69}$As isotope, this is the first direct mass measurement. A mass uncertainty of 22 keV was achieved with only 10 events. For the $^{70}$Se isotope, a mass uncertainty of 2.6 keV was obtained, corresponding to a relative accuracy of $\delta$m/m = 4.0$\times 10^{-8}$, with less than 500 events. The masses of the $^{71}$Se and $^{71}$Br isotopes were measured with an uncertainty of 23 and 16 keV, respectively. Our results for the $^{70,71}$Se and $^{71}$Br isotopes agree with the 2016 Atomic Mass Evaluation, and our result for the $^{69}$As isotope resolves the discrepancy between previous indirect measurements. We measured also the mass of $^{14}$N$^{15}$N$^{40}$Ar (A=69) with a relative accuracy of $\delta$m/m = 1.7$\times 10^{-8}$, the highest yet achieved with a MR-TOF-MS. Our results show that the measured restrengthening of the proton-neutron interaction ($\delta$V$_{pn}$) for odd-odd nuclei at the N=Z line above Z=29 (recently extended to Z=37) is hardly evident at N-Z=2, and not evident at N-Z=4. Nevertheless, detailed structure of $\delta$V$_{pn}$ along the N-Z=2 and N-Z=4 lines, confirmed by our mass measurements, may provide a hint regarding the ongoing $\approx$500 keV discrepancy in the mass value of the $^{70}$Br isotope, which prevents including it in the world average of ${Ft}$-value for superallowed 0$^+\rightarrow$ 0$^+$ $\beta$ decays. The aims of this study, in a sample of outpatients with COPD, were to (i) assess the prevalence of physical frailty using the Japanese version of the Cardiovascular Health Study (J-CHS) criteria and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and the degree of agreement between the findings of the two assessments and (ii) identify factors associated with the disparity in the results obtained with these instruments.Patients and Methods: This was a multicenter cross-sectional study of individuals with stable COPD enrolled in four institutions. Frailty was assessed using the J-CHS criteria and the SPPB. Weighted Cohen’s kappa (k) statistic was performed to investigate the magnitude of agreement between the instruments. We divided participants into two groups depending on whether there was agreement or non-agreement between the results of the two frailty assessments. The two groups were then compared with respect to their clinical data.Results: A total of 103 participants (81 male) were included in the analysis. The median age and FEV1 (%predicted) were 77 years and 62%, respectively. The prevalence of frailty and pre-frail was 21% and 56% with the J-CHS criteria and 10% and 17% with the SPPB. The degree of agreement was fair (k = 0.36 [95% CI: 0.22– 0.50], P< 0.001). There were no significant differences in the clinical characteristics between the agreement group (n = 44) and the non-agreement group (n = 59).Conclusion: We showed that the degree of agreement was fair with the J-CHS criteria detecting a higher prevalence than the SPPB. Our findings suggest that the J-CHS criteria may be useful in people with COPD with the aim of providing interventions to reverse frailty in the early stages.Keywords: cardiovascular health study, Short Physical Performance Battery, chronic lung disease, physical function

Abstract: Isobaric charge-exchange reactions induced by beams of 112Sn have been investigated at the GSI facilities using the fragment separator FRS. The high-resolving power of this spectrometer makes it possible to obtain the isobaric charge-exchange cross sections with an accuracy of 3% and to separate quasi-elastic and inelastic contributions in the missing-energy spectra, in which the inelastic component is associated to the in-medium excitation of baryonic resonances such as the $\Delta$ resonance. Abstract: The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ mesons at midrapidity in U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192$ GeV in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the $\pi^0(\eta)\rightarrow\gamma\gamma$ decay modes. A strong suppression of $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central U$+$U collisions relative to binary scaled $p$$+$$p$ results. Yields of $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ mesons measured in U$+$U collisions show similar suppression pattern to the ones measured in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The $\eta$/$\pi^0$ ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum, and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and $e^+e^-$ collisions., Comment: 403 authors from 72 institutions, 13 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables, 2012 data. v2 is version accepted by Physical Review C. Abstract: We present direct photon-hadron correlations in 200 GeV/A Au$+$Au, $d$$+$Au and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, for direct photon $p_T$ from 5--12 GeV/$c$, collected by the PHENIX Collaboration in the years from 2006 to 2011. We observe no significant modification of jet fragmentation in $d$$+$Au collisions, indicating that cold nuclear matter effects are small or absent. Hadrons carrying a large fraction of the quark's momentum are suppressed in Au$+$Au compared to $p$$+$$p$ and $d$$+$Au. As the momentum fraction decreases, the yield of hadrons in Au$+$Au increases to an excess over the yield in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. The excess is at large angles and at low hadron $p_T$ and is most pronounced for hadrons associated with lower momentum direct photons. Abstract: We report the measurement of reaction cross sections ($\sigma_R^{\rm ex}$) of $^{27,29}$F with a carbon target at RIKEN. The unexpectedly large $\sigma_R^{\rm ex}$ and derived matter radius identify $^{29}$F as the heaviest two-neutron Borromean halo to date. The halo is attributed to neutrons occupying the $2p_{3/2}$ orbital, thereby vanishing the shell closure associated with the neutron number $N = 20$. The results are explained by state-of-the-art shell model calculations. Abstract: Isobaric single charge-exchange reactions, changing nuclear charges by one unit but leaving the mass partitions unaffected, have been for the first time investigated by peripheral collisions of $^{112}$Sn ions accelerated up to 1\textit{A} GeV at the GSI facilities. The high-resolving power of the FRS spectrometer allows us to obtain $(p, n)$-type isobaric charge-exchange cross sections with an uncertainty of $3.5\%$ and to separate quasi-elastic and inelastic components in the missing-energy spectra of the ejectiles. The inelastic component is associated to the excitation of the $\Delta$(1232) isobar resonance and the emission of pions in s-wave both in the target and projectile nucleus, while the quasi-elastic contribution is associated to the nuclear spin-isospin response of nucleon-hole excitations. An apparent shift of the $\Delta$-resonance peak of $\sim$63 MeV is observed when comparing the missing-energy spectra obtained from the measurements with proton and carbon targets. A detailed analysis, performed with a theoretical model for the reactions, indicates that this observation can be simply interpreted as a change in the relative magnitude between the contribution of the excitation of the resonance in the target and in the projectile.

Abstract: Although ultrafast manipulation of magnetism holds great promise for new physical phenomena and applications, targeting specific states is held back by our limited understanding of how magnetic correlations evolve on ultrafast timescales. Using ultrafast resonant inelastic x-ray scattering we demonstrate that femtosecond laser pulses can excite transient magnons at large wavevectors in gapped antiferromagnets, and that they persist for several picoseconds which is opposite to what is observed in nearly gapless magnets. 40. Identification of Spin-Triplet Superconductivity through a Helical-Chiral Phase Transition in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ Thin-Films

Abstract: Despite much effort for over the two decades, the paring symmetry of a Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ superconductor has been still unclear. In this Rapid Communication, motivated by the recent rapid progress in fabrication techniques for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ thin-films, we propose a promising strategy for identifying the spin-triplet superconductivity in the thin-film geometry by employing an antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling potential and a Zeeman potential due to an external magnetic field. We demonstrate that a spin-triplet superconducting thin-film undergoes a phase transition from a helical state to a chiral state by increasing the applied magnetic field. This phase transition is accompanied by a drastic change in the property of surface Andreev bound states. As a consequence, the helical-chiral phase transition, which is unique to the spin-triplet superconductors, can be detected through a sudden change in a tunneling conductance spectrum of a normal-metal/superconductor junction.
