Abstract

The synthesis, structural, photophysical and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a novel lanthanide terpyridyl-like complex family LLn[(N[O.sub.3]).sub.3] (Ln = La, Gd, Dy, Yb and Y) are described. The quadratic hyperpolarizability coefficient beta, measured by the harmonic light scattering (HLS) method, is found to be dependent on the nature of the metal and the examination of yttrium unambiguously has confirmed the contribution of metal f electrons to the NLO activity.

Abstract

The first dipolar lanthanide terpyridyl complex family exhibiting high hyperpolarizability coefficient beta evidenced a so-called metal-induced second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) activity enhancement along the lanthanide series is reported. The metal-induced NLO activity enhancement as a general property of f block elements and strongly suggests the direct contribution of f electrons to the hyperpolarizability.
