The Galton board is a desktop probability machine traditionally used to visualize the principles of statistical physics with classical particles. Here, we demonstrate a photonic Galton board that enables on-chip observation of single-photon interference. The photonic Galton board, which can be considered as a simplified Boson sampler, consists of a directional coupler matrix terminated by an array of superconducting nanowire detectors to provide spatiotemporal resolution. This design also allows for photon-number-resolving capability, making it suitable for high-speed photon counting. Our results demonstrate the compatibility between single-photon detector array and photonic integrated circuits, paving the way for implementing on-chip large-scale quantum optics experiments and photonic quantum computing., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Second harmonic generation (SHG) extensively employs periodically poled nonlinear crystals through forward quasi-phase-matching to achieve efficient frequency conversion. As poling periods approach sub-micrometers, backward quasi-phase-matching has also been demonstrated, albeit by utilizing pulsed laser drives. The realization of symmetric second harmonic generation, characterized by counterpropagating pumps, however, has remained elusive despite theoretical predictions. The main challenge lies in achieving strong nonlinear coupling with poling period below half the wavelength of the second-harmonic light. The recent emergence of high-quality ferroelectric lithium niobate thin films provides an opportunity for achieving precise domain control at submicron dimensions. In this article, we demonstrate reliable control of ferroelectric domains in thin film lithium niobate waveguide with a poling period down to 370nm, thereby realizing highly efficient continuous-wave pumped symmetric SHG. This demonstration not only validates the feasibility of achieving subwavelength periodic poling on waveguides but also opens new avenues for leveraging submicron ferroelectric domain structures in integrated photonics and nonlinear optics research.

The demand for high-performance electromechanical resonators is ever-growing across diverse applications, ranging from sensing and time-keeping to advanced communication devices. Among the electromechanical materials being explored, thin-film lithium niobate stands out for its strong piezoelectric properties and low acoustic loss. However, in nearly all existing lithium niobate electromechanical devices, the configuration is such that the electrodes are in direct contact with the mechanical resonator. This configuration introduces an undesirable mass-loading effect, giving rise to spurious modes and additional damping. Here, we present an electromechanical platform that mitigates this challenge by leveraging a flip-chip bonding technique to separate the electrodes from the mechanical resonator. By offloading the electrodes from the resonator, our approach yields a substantial increase in the quality factor of these resonators, paving the way for enhanced performance and reliability for their device applications., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The layered transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-TiSe$_2$ is of great research interest, having intriguing properties of charge density waves (CDW) and superconductivity under doping or pressurizing. The monolayer form of 1T-TiSe$_2$ also shows a CDW with a higher transition temperature T_c than the bulk, indicating a stronger CDW interaction. By using the meta-generalized gradient approximation (metaGGA)-based model Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE) and many-body perturbation GW+BSE methods, we calculate the exciton binding energies and electron energy loss spectrum (EELS) for the 1T-TiSe$_2$ monolayer under different in-plane biaxial strains. We find that even without strain the 1T-TiSe$_2$ monolayer can have negative exciton energies at the Brillouin zone boundary point M, with a binding energy larger than the gap. The calculated EELS reinforces this picture, indicating EI (exciton insulator) states in 1T-TiSe$_2$ monolayer even without strain. The Wannier-Mott formula calculations of exciton binding energy corroborate results from GW+BSE. Small compressive strains enhance the EI state, and for tensile strains slightly less than 3%, the EI state in this monolayer persists. At large tensile strains, the material makes a transition to a normal semiconductor. Our results provide important information for understanding the quantum nature of this two-dimensional (2D) material. Our results from the standard G0W0@PBE+SOC+U+BSE approach are not qualitatively different from those of a more computationally efficient metaGGA-based SCAN+SOC+U+mBSE+$f_{xc}^{loc}$ approach that employs a model BSE.

Quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators have attracted intensive experimental and theoretical studies due to their beneficial applications in spintronic devices. Density functional theory (DFT) meets challenges when describing the electronic structure of QSH materials. Only the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE06) with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is effective in revealing the band opening in the typical QSH 1T`-WTe2, but with increased computational demands. Here, using DFT, Wannier function simulations, the screened hybrid HSE06 functional, and first-principles-based many body perturbation theory GW, we investigate the sensitive electronic structure in monolayer 1T`-WTe2, with advanced meta-generalized gradient (meta-GGA) density functional approximations. The success of the recent SCAN and r2SCAN meta-GGAs left their predecessor meta-GGA made very simple (MVS) ignored by the scientific community. Largely unnoticed were the increased band gaps of MVS compared to any semilocal approximation including SCAN. We find that the non-empirical MVS approximation yields a positive fundamental band gap, without any help from exact exchange, Hubbard U, or SOC correction. We explain the success of the meta-GGA MVS for the band gap in 1T`-WTe2 by presenting two working mechanisms in meta-GGA approximations. Besides, we point out the difficulty of using G0W0 for 1T`-WTe2. Although the single shot GW correction with an MVS reference yields a smaller band gap than GW with PBE, the G0W0@MVS is still not suitable for simulating 1T`-WTe2, due to its negative band gap. These DFT and beyond DFT results highlight the importance of meta-GGAs and novel construction schemes with enhanced kinetic energy density dependence. Monolayer $\mathrm{MoS_2}$ under strain has many interesting properties and possible applications in technology. A recent experimental study examined the effect of strain on the bandgap of monolayer $\mathrm{MoS_2}$ on a mildly curved graphite surface, reporting that under biaxial strain with a Poisson's ratio of 0.44, the bandgap decreases at a rate of 400 meV/% strain. In this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations for a free-standing $\mathrm{MoS_2}$ monolayer, using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) PBE, the hybrid functional HSE06, and many-body perturbation theory with the GW approximation using PBE wavefunctions (G0W0@PBE). We found that under biaxial strain with the experimental Poisson's ratio, the bandgap decreases at rates of 63 meV/% strain (PBE), 73 meV/% strain (HSE06), and 43 meV/% strain (G0W0@PBE), which are significantly smaller than the experimental rate. We also found that PBE predicts a similarly smaller rate (90 meV/% strain) for a different Poisson's ratio of 0.25. Spin-orbit correction (SOC) has little effect on the gap or its strain dependence. Additionally, we observed a semiconductor-to-metal transition under an equal tensile biaxial strain of 10% and a transition from a direct to an indirect bandgap, consistent with previous theoretical work.

Nitride ferroelectrics have recently emerged as promising alternatives to oxide ferroelectrics due to their compatibility with mainstream semiconductor processing. ScAlN, in particular, has exhibited remarkable piezoelectric coupling strength ($K^2$) comparable to that of lithium niobate (LN), making it a valuable choice for RF filters in wireless communications. Recently, ScAlN has sparked interest in its use for nanophotonic devices, chiefly due to its large bandgap facilitating operation in blue wavelengths coupled with promises of enhanced nonlinear optical properties such as a large second-order susceptibility ($\chi^{(2)}$). It is still an open question whether ScAlN can outperform oxide ferroelectrics concerning the Pockels effect -- an electro-optic coupling extensively utilized in optical communications devices. In this paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration of ScAlN's Pockels effect. Our findings reveal that the electro-optic coupling of ScAlN, despite being weak at low Sc concentration, may be significantly enhanced at high levels of Sc doping, which points the direction of continued research efforts to unlock the full potential of ScAlN.

Sapphire is a promising wideband substrate material for visible photonics. It is a common growth substrate for III-nitride light-emitting diodes and laser structures. Doped sapphires are important gain media foundational to the development of titanium-sapphire and ruby lasers. For lasers operating at visible and near-infrared wavelengths, a photonic platform that minimizes loss while maximizing gain material overlap is crucial. Here, we introduce a novel low-loss waveguiding strategy that establishes high-performance integrated photonics on sapphire substrates. This platform achieves a high intrinsic quality factor of 5.6 million near 780 nm and features direct compatibility with a range of solid-state laser gain media.

We demonstrate optomechanics in the sub-terahertz regime. An optical racetrack resonator, patterned from thin-film lithium niobate, is suspended to support mechanical structures oscillating at these extremely high frequencies, which are read out through cavity optomechanical coupling. Our hybrid platform paves the way for advancing mechanical systems in the quantum regime at elevated temperatures.

Charge density waves (CDWs) in transition metal dichalcogenides are the subject of growing scientific interest due to their rich interplay with exotic phases of matter and their potential technological applications. Here, using density functional theory with advanced meta-generalized gradient approximations (meta-GGAs) and linear response time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) with state-of-the-art exchange-correlation kernels, we investigate the electronic, vibrational, and optical properties in 1T-TiSe2 with and without CDW. In both bulk and monolayer TiSe2, the electronic bands and phonon dispersions in either normal (semi-metallic) or CDW (semiconducting) phase are described well via meta-GGAs, which separate the valence and conduction bands just as HSE06 does but with significantly more computational feasibility. Instead of the underestimated gap with standard exchange-correlation approximations and the overestimated gap with screened hybrid functional HSE06, the band gap of the monolayer TiSe2 CDW phase calculated by the meta-GGA MVS (151 meV) is consistent with the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) gap of 153 meV measured at 10 K. In addition, the gap of bulk TiSe2 CDW phase reaches 67 meV within the TASK approximation, close to the ARPES gap of 82 meV. Regarding excitations of many-body nature, for bulk TiSe2 in normal and CDW phases, the experimentally observed humps of electron energy loss spectroscopy and plasmon peak are successfully reproduced in TDDFT, without an obvious kernel dependence. To unleash the full scientific and technological potential of CDWs in transition metal dichalcogenides, the chemical doping, heterostructure engineering, and pump-probe techniques are needed. Microwave-to-optical transducers are integral to the future of superconducting quantum computing, as they would enable scaling and long-distance communication of superconducting quantum processors through optical fiber links. However, optically-induced microwave noise poses a significant challenge in achieving quantum transduction between microwave and optical frequencies. In this work, we study light-induced microwave noise in an integrated electro-optical transducer harnessing Pockels effect of thin film lithium niobate. We reveal three sources of added noise with distinctive time constants ranging from sub-100 nanoseconds to milliseconds. Our results gain insights into the mechanisms and corresponding mitigation strategies for light-induced microwave noise in superconducting microwave-optical transducers, and pave the way towards realizing the ultimate goal of quantum transduction.

Learning representations from videos requires understanding continuous motion and visual correspondences between frames. In this paper, we introduce the Concatenated Masked Autoencoders (CatMAE) as a spatial-temporal learner for self-supervised video representation learning. For the input sequence of video frames, CatMAE keeps the initial frame unchanged while applying substantial masking (95%) to subsequent frames. The encoder in CatMAE is responsible for encoding visible patches for each frame individually; subsequently, for each masked frame, the decoder leverages visible patches from both previous and current frames to reconstruct the original image. Our proposed method enables the model to estimate the motion information between visible patches, match the correspondences between preceding and succeeding frames, and ultimately learn the evolution of scenes. Furthermore, we propose a new data augmentation strategy, Video-Reverse (ViRe), which uses reversed video frames as the model's reconstruction targets. This further encourages the model to utilize continuous motion details and correspondences to complete the reconstruction, thereby enhancing the model's capabilities. Many countries and commercial organizations have shown great interest in constructing Martian base. In-situ resource utilization (ISRU) provides a cost-effective way to achieve this ambitious goal. In this paper, we proposed to use Martian soil simulant to produce fiber to satisfy material requirement for the construction of Martian base. The composition, melting behavior and fiber forming process of soil simulant was studied, and continuous fiber with a maximum strength of 1320 MPa was obtained on a spinning facility. The findings of this study demonstrate the feasibility of ISRU to prepare Martian fiber from the soil on the Mars, offering a new way to get key materials for the construction of Martian base.

Broadband, energy-efficient signal transfer between cryogenic and room-temperature environment has been a major bottleneck for superconducting quantum and classical logic circuits. Photonic links promise to overcome this challenge by offering simultaneous high bandwidth and low thermal load. However, the development of cryogenic electro-optic modulators -- a key component for photonic readout of electrical signals -- has been stifled by the stringent requirements of superconducting circuits. Rapid single flux quantum circuits (RSFQ), for example, operate with a tiny signal amplitude of only a few millivolts (mV), far below the volt-level signal used in conventional circuits. Here, we demonstrate the first direct optical readout of an RSFQ circuit without additional electrical amplification enabled by a novel superconducting electro-optic modulator (SEOM) featuring a record-low half-wave voltage V{\pi} of 42 mV on a 1 m-long SEOM. Leveraging the low ohmic loss of superconductors, we break the fundamental V{\pi}-bandwidth trade-off and demonstrate electro-optic bandwidth up to 17 GHz on a 0.2 m-long SEOM at cryogenic temperatures. Our work presents a viable solution toward high-bandwidth signal transfer between future large-scale superconducting circuits and room-temperature electronics.

Parametric down-conversion is a widely exploited technique in optics to produce entangled states of photons for quantum information processing and quantum sensing. In the microwave domain, devices based on Josephson junctions, such as Josephson parametric amplifiers (JPAs) and voltage-biased Josephson junctions, have been successfully utilized to generate such states. However, their high susceptibility to magnetic fields has posed challenges in many applications. Here we demonstrate the generation of two-mode squeezed states via four-wave-mixing in a superconducting nanowire resonator patterned from NbN. The NbN nanowire exhibits a strong Kerr nonlinearity, resulting in the emission of a signal-idler pair with a cross-correlation of $g^{(2)}(0) = 11.9$. Owing to the magnetic resilience and high critical temperature ($T_c$) of NbN, our microwave parametric sources based on kinetic inductance promise an expanded range of potential applications.

Superconducting microwave amplifiers are essential for sensitive signal readout in superconducting quantum processors. Typically based on Josephson Junctions, these amplifiers require operation at milli-Kelvin temperatures to achieve quantum-limited performance. Here we demonstrate a quantum microwave amplifier that employs radiative cooling to operate at elevated temperatures. This kinetic-inductance-based parametric amplifier, patterned from a single layer of high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ NbN thin film\cmt{in the form of a nanobridge}, maintains a high gain and meanwhile enables low added noise of 1.3 quanta when operated at 1.5 Kelvin. Remarkably, this represents only a 0.2 quanta increase compared to the performance at a base temperature of 0.1 Kelvin. By uplifting the parametric amplifiers from the mixing chamber without compromising readout efficiency, this work represents an important step for realizing scalable microwave quantum technologies.

Meta-optics are attracting intensive interest as alternatives to traditional optical systems comprising multiple lenses and diffractive elements. Among applications, single metalens imaging is highly attractive due to the potential for achieving significant size reduction and simplified design. However, single metalenses exhibit severe chromatic aberration arising from material dispersion and the nature of singlet optics, making them unsuitable for full-color imaging requiring achromatic performance. In this work, we propose and validate a deep learning-based single metalens imaging system to overcome chromatic aberration in varied scenarios. The developed deep learning networks computationally reconstruct raw imaging captures through reliably refocusing red, green and blue channels to eliminate chromatic aberration and enhance resolution without altering the metalens hardware. The networks demonstrate consistent enhancement across different aperture sizes and focusing distances. Images outside the training set and real-world photos were also successfully reconstructed. Our approach provides a new means to achieve achromatic metalenses without complex engineering, enabling practical and simplified implementation to overcome inherent limitations of meta-optics.

UV and visible photonics enable applications ranging from spectroscopic sensing to communication and quantum information processing. Photonics structures in these wavelength regimes, however, tend to experience higher loss than their IR counterpart. Particularly in the near-UV band, on-chip optical microresonators have not yet achieved a quality factor beyond 1 million. Here we report ultra-low-loss photonic waveguides and resonators patterned from alumina thin films prepared by a highly scalable atomic layer deposition process. We demonstrate ultra high Q factor of 1.5$\,\times\,$10$^6$ at 390nm, a record value at UV bands, and 1.9$\,\times\,$10$^6$ at 488.5nm.

ScAlN is an emerging ferroelectric material that possesses large band gap, strong piezoelectricity, and holds great promises for enhanced \chi^{(2)} nonliearity. In this study, we demonstrate high-fidelity ferroelectric domain switching and periodic poling of Al-polar ScAlN thin film epitaxially grown on on c-axis sapphire substrate using gallium nitride as a buffer layer. Uniform poling of ScAlN with periods ranging from 2 um to 0.4 um is realized. The ability to lithographically control the polarization of epitaxial ScAlN presents a critical advance for its further exploitation in ferroelectric storage and nonlinear optics applications., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures

Space-based stellar coronagraph instruments aim to directly image exoplanets that are a fraction of an arcsecond separation and ten billion times fainter than their host star. To achieve this, one or more deformable mirrors (DMs) are used in concert with coronagraph masks to control the wavefront and minimize diffracted starlight in a region of the image known as the ``dark zone" or ``dark hole." The DMs must have a high number of actuators (50 to 96 across) to allow dark holes that are large enough to image a range of desired exoplanet separations. In addition, the surfaces of the DMs must be controlled at the picometer level to enable the required contrast. Any defect in the mechanical structure of the DMs or electronic system could significantly impact the scientific potential of the mission. Thus, NASA's Exoplanet Exploration Program (ExEP) procured two 50$\times$50 microelectromechanical (MEMS) DMs manufactured by Boston Micromachines Corporation (BMC) to test their robustness to the vibrational environment that the DMs will be exposed to during launch. The DMs were subjected to a battery of functional and high-contrast imaging tests before and after exposure to flight-like random vibrations. Frequency conversion of dissipative solitons associated with the generation of broadband optical frequency combs having a tooth spacing of hundreds of giga-hertz is a topical challenge holding the key to practical applications in precision spectroscopy and data processing. The work in this direction is underpinned by fundamental problems in nonlinear and quantum optics. Here, we present the dissipative two-colour bright-bright and dark-dark solitons in a quasi-phase-matched microresonator pumped for the second-harmonic generation in the near-infrared spectral range. We also found the breather states associated with the pulse front motion and collisions. The soliton regime is found to be typical in slightly phase-mismatched resonators, while the phase-matched ones reveal broader but incoherent spectra and higher-order harmonic generation. Soliton and breather effects reported here exist for the negative tilt of the resonance line, which is possible only via the dominant contribution of second-order nonlinearity., Comment: 6 figures

Flexible hybrid electronics (FHE) is an emerging technology enabled through the integration of advanced semiconductor devices and 3D printing technology. It unlocks tremendous market potential by realizing low-cost flexible circuits and systems that can be conformally integrated into various applications. However, the operating frequencies of most reported FHE systems are relatively low. It is also worth to note that reported FHE systems have been limited to relatively simple design concept (since complex systems will impose challenges in aspects such as multilayer interconnections, printing materials, and bonding layers). Here, we report a fully 3D-printed flexible four-layer millimeter-wave Doppler radar (i.e., a millimeter-wave FHE system). The sensing performance and flexibility of the 3D-printed radar are characterized and validated by general field tests and bending tests, respectively. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of developing fully 3D-printed high-frequency multilayer FHE, which can be conformally integrated into irregular surfaces (e.g., vehicle bumpers) for applications such as vehicle radars and wearable electronics.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials have versatile electronic and optical properties. TMD nanoribbons show interesting properties due to reduced dimensionality, quantum confinement, and edge states. Tang et al. showed that the edge bands evolved with bending can tune the optical properties for various widths of TMD nanoribbons. Defects are commonly present in 2D TMD materials, and can dramatically change the material properties. In this following work, we investigate the interaction between the edge and the defect states in WS2 nanoribbons with line defects under different bending conditions, using density functional theory (DFT). We reveal interesting semiconducting-to-metallic phase transitions, suggesting potential applications in nano-electronics or molecular electronics. We also calculate the optical absorption of the nanoribbons with different defect positions with the many-body GW-BSE (Bethe-Salpeter equation) approach, revealing a tunable optical spectrum and diverse exciton states in the defected TMD nanoribbons.
