Abstract

In this work, the tungsten‐copper composites were fabricated by binder jet 3D printing technology. The effects of different printing layer thicknesses (50 μm to 100 μm) on the green density and green strength were investigated. Then, under the optimal layer thickness, the effects of different sintering temperatures (1300 °C to 1600 °C) on the microstructure and densification of tungsten‐40 wt.–% copper composites were studied. The experimental results showed that when the printing layer thickness was set as a lower value (50 μm), the tungsten‐40 wt.–% copper green part had the best strength and its density reached a maximum value of 60.73 %. After sintering for green parts printed with 50 μm layer thickness, the relative density, thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity of sintered parts first increased and then decreased with increasing sintering temperature. In our experiments, the tungsten‐40 wt.–% copper sample fabricated by binder jet 3D printing with a printing layer thickness of 50 μm under a sintering temperature of 1500 °C displayed the best properties, in which the relative density, thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity were 97.04 %, 228 W⋅m−1⋅K−1 and 46.5 % IACS, respectively. Abstract

Multiple Coulomb Scattering (MCS) is a well known phenomenon occurring when charged particles traverse materials. Measurements of muons traversing low $Z$ materials made in the MuScat experiment showed that theoretical models and simulation codes, such as GEANT4 (v7.0), over-estimated the scattering. The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) measured the cooling of a muon beam traversing a liquid hydrogen or lithium hydride (LiH) energy absorber as part of a programme to develop muon accelerator facilities, such as a Neutrino Factory or a Muon Collider. The energy loss and MCS that occur in the absorber material are competing effects that alter the performance of the cooling channel. Therefore measurements of MCS are required in order to validate the simulations used to predict the cooling performance in future accelerator facilities. We report measurements made in the MICE apparatus of MCS using a LiH absorber and muons within the momentum range 160 to 245 MeV/c. The measured RMS scattering width is about 9% smaller than that predicted by the approximate formula proposed by the Particle Data Group. Data at 172, 200 and 240 MeV/c are compared to the GEANT4 (v9.6) default scattering model. Abstract

The use of accelerated beams of electrons, protons or ions has furthered the development of nearly every scientific discipline. However, high-energy muon beams of equivalent quality have not yet been delivered. Muon beams can be created through the decay of pions produced by the interaction of a proton beam with a target. Such ‘tertiary’ beams have much lower brightness than those created by accelerating electrons, protons or ions. High-brightness muon beams comparable to those produced by state-of-the-art electron, proton and ion accelerators could facilitate the study of lepton–antilepton collisions at extremely high energies and provide well characterized neutrino beams1–6. Such muon beams could be realized using ionization cooling, which has been proposed to increase muon-beam brightness7,8. Here we report the realization of ionization cooling, which was confirmed by the observation of an increased number of low-amplitude muons after passage of the muon beam through an absorber, as well as an increase in the corresponding phase-space density. The simulated performance of the ionization cooling system is consistent with the measured data, validating designs of the ionization cooling channel in which the cooling process is repeated to produce a substantial cooling effect9–11. The results presented here are an important step towards achieving the muon-beam quality required to search for phenomena at energy scales beyond the reach of the Large Hadron Collider at a facility of equivalent or reduced footprint6., Ionization cooling, a technique that delivers high-brightness muon beams for the study of phenomena at energy scales beyond those of the Large Hadron Collider, is demonstrated by the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment.
