Blend films of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and a graft copolymer (GL) of acrylic acid (AA) with eucalypt lignosulfonate calcium (HLS) were prepared by using a solution casting method. The structure of GL/PVA blend films was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which indicate that GL/PVA is a homogeneous system due to the strong interactions between PVA and GL. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results indicate that only one glass transition temperature (Tg) can be seen over the entire blending ratio. Meanwhile, the Tg was enhanced and the melting point (Tm) was depressed when GL was added to PVA. With the addition of 3 wt% GL, the onset decomposition temperature (To) was increased by 102 °C compared to that of PVA. Compared with pure PVA, the GL/PVA exhibited a remarkable improvement in mechanical properties: the tensile strength and Young’s modulus of GL/PVA with 5 wt% GL were 39% and 285% higher than that of pure PVA, respectively. These results show that a new melt-processing method of PVA may be developed by the addition of GL in PVA.

Objective: Cold intolerance is a common complication after the reverse digital artery flap procedure. However, we observed that the incidence of cold intolerance of different fingers was different. Therefore, we investigated the differences in the incidence of cold intolerance in different fingers and attempted to elucidate the causes of this phenomenon. Method: We recruited 37 patients and divided them into 3 groups based on injured finger, namely, 13, 13, and 11 patients for the index, middle, and ring finger groups in our study, respectively. Cold intolerance was subjectively reported by patients themselves. Our surgical procedure was designed in such a way that the reverse digital artery flap (RDAF) was located at the lateral area on the proximal phalange of the injured finger (on the ulnar side of the index, middle, and ring fingers) in consideration of patient aesthetics. Results: At final follow-up, 17 of 37 patients reported cold intolerance (index: 8; middle: 8; and ring: 1). Among the symptoms of discomfort, 9 patients mainly complained about the lower temperature of the flap upon exposure to cold weather compared with that of the uninjured area. Meanwhile, 3 patients complained of pain, and 5 patients reported numbness of the flap. The rate of cold intolerance in index, middle, and ring finger were 62%, 62%, and 9%, respectively. The patients’ age and sex did not significantly differ among the 3 groups. Significant differences were observed when we compared the incidence of cold intolerance of the index and ring fingers or the middle and ring fingers. Conclusion: Cold intolerance on the ring finger was obviously lower than intolerance in the index and middle fingers. Cold intolerance had a tendency to occur on fingers that sacrificed the dominant artery. And blood supply is an important predisposing factor for cold intolerance.

Landslide dams, distributed in debris flow channel, may amplify the scale of debris flow in magnitude because of their block-failure process. Besides, the loose materials of landslide dams are important material source of debris flows. Therefore, research on the mechanism of failure and sediment delivery of landslide dams in debris flow channel has great significance in debris flow prevention and mitigation. In this paper, we designed large-scale flume experiments to explore the failure patterns and the mechanism of sediment transport of landslide dams in debris flow channel. The failure of incomplete -block landslide dams had two patterns: overtopping and downward erosion of spillway. Refer to the associated sediment delivery theory, we presented the formula of scour rate of dam materials and peak flow; the calculated results are found to be in good agreement with model test data.

Understanding the meanings and identifying the controls for the stormflow generation with complex and nonlinear behaviors is essential for the development of threshold-based hydrological theory, as well as accurate assessment and prediction for flash flood risks. However, the study of catchment emergent patterns with three-linear threshold behaviors associated with hydrological connectivity has received little attention. Therefore, utilizing soil water storage, rainfall, and streamflow data spanning 3 years in a humid forest experimental watershed, Dujiangyan city, China, we elucidated how and where stormflow was generated with nonlinear behaviors, which were affected by antecedent wetness and rainfall amounts. Stormflow threshold behavior was taken as a function of combined gross precipitation and antecedent soil water storage, which was isolated using piecewise regression analysis with the identification of two breakpoints (i.e., generation threshold, Tg and rising threshold, Tr). It was found that the initial emergent behavior of rainfall-runoff was generally activated at the Tg, and then an abrupt shift from slow to fast flood response was possibly triggered at the Tr. These processes are important to understand the formation and development of flash floods at the watershed scale. It was noted that, above the Tr, considerably higher stormflow amounts generally occurred due to the lateral-connectivity extension of runoff contributing area from stream to neighboring hillslopes. Meanwhile, gravity-driven water movements in soil and better hydrological connectivity during the above-Tr phase readily triggered the huge flash flood disasters. The above-Tr flash floods with abrupt shifts were predominantly controlled by rainfall amounts, while initial below-Tg stormflow generation was mainly controlled by unsaturated soil water storage. More noteworthy, under heavy rainstorm conditions, the above-Tr stormflow was dominantly generated by subsurface flow, as was demonstrated at hillslope and watershed scales. These findings contribute to increasing our understanding of the controls on three-linear threshold-based hydrological behaviors, as well as of subsurface stormflow generation mechanism associated with hydrological connectivity in humid forest watersheds.
