Abstract Anticancer peptides (ACPs) perform a promising role in discovering anti-cancer drugs. The growing research on ACPs as therapeutic agent is increasing due to its minimal side effects. However, identifying novel ACPs using wet-lab experiments are generally time-consuming, labor-intensive, and expensive. Leveraging computational methods for fast and accurate prediction of ACPs would harness the drug discovery process. Herein, a machine learning-based predictor, called PLMACPred, is developed for identifying ACPs from peptide sequence only. PLMACPred adopted a set of encoding schemes representing evolutionary-property, composition-property, and protein language model (PLM), i.e., evolutionary scale modeling (ESM-2)- and ProtT5-based embedding to encode peptides. Then, two-dimensional (2D) wavelet denoising (WD) was employed to remove the noise from extracted features. Finally, ensemble-based cascade deep forest (CDF) model was developed to identify ACP. PLMACPred model attained superior performance on all three benchmark datasets, namely, ACPmain, ACPAlter, and ACP740 over tenfold cross validation and independent dataset. PLMACPred outperformed the existing models and improved the prediction accuracy by 18.53%, 2.4%, 7.59% on ACPmain, ACPalter, ACP740 dataset, respectively. We showed that embedding from ProtT5 and ESM-2 was capable of capturing better contextual information from the entire sequence than the other encoding schemes for ACP prediction. For the explainability of proposed model, SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) method was used to analyze the feature effect on the ACP prediction. A list of novel sequence motifs was proposed from the ACP sequence using MEME suites. We believe, PLMACPred will support in accelerating the discovery of novel ACPs as well as other activities of microbial peptides.

Proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) offer a long-term, carbon-emission free solution to the energy needs of the transportation sector. However, high cost continues to limit PEMFC commercialization. Replacing expensive platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts with PGM-free catalysts could reduce cost, but the low active site density of PGM-free catalysts necessitates the use of thick electrodes that suffer from substantial mass transport losses. In these thick PGM-free electrodes, effective water management and oxygen transport are crucial to achieve high performance. In this work, we investigate the role of anode and cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL) configurations in controlling water management. Asymmetric GDL configurations, in which the anode GDL exhibits higher permeability than the cathode GDL, showed higher performance compared to conventional symmetric configurations. Computational modeling showed that the improved performance is mainly due to improved water management, resulting in lower liquid water saturation and faster oxygen transport in the cathode.

Abstract Background Diabetes is a chronic condition that can result in many long-term physiological, metabolic, and neurological complications. Therefore, early detection of diabetes would help to determine a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Methods In this study, we employed machine learning (ML) based case-control study on a diabetic cohort size of 1000 participants form Qatar Biobank to predict diabetes using clinical and bone health indicators from Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) machines. ML models were utilized to distinguish diabetes groups from non-diabetes controls. Recursive feature elimination (RFE) was leveraged to identify a subset of features to improve the performance of model. SHAP based analysis was used for the importance of features and support the explainability of the proposed model. Results Ensemble based models XGboost and RF achieved over 84% accuracy for detecting diabetes. After applying RFE, we selected only 20 features which improved the model accuracy to 87.2%. From a clinical standpoint, higher HDL-Cholesterol and Neutrophil levels were observed in the diabetic group, along with lower vitamin B12 and testosterone levels. Lower sodium levels were found in diabetics, potentially stemming from clinical factors including specific medications, hormonal imbalances, unmanaged diabetes. We believe Dapagliflozin prescriptions in Qatar were associated with decreased Gamma Glutamyltransferase and Aspartate Aminotransferase enzyme levels, confirming prior research. We observed that bone area, bone mineral content, and bone mineral density were slightly lower in the Diabetes group across almost all body parts, but the difference against the control group was not statistically significant except in T12, troch and trunk area. No significant negative impact of diabetes progression on bone health was observed over a period of 5-15 yrs in the cohort. Conclusion This study recommends the inclusion of ML model which combines both DXA and clinical data for the early diagnosis of diabetes.

Abstract Background Drug targets in living beings perform pivotal roles in the discovery of potential drugs. Conventional wet-lab characterization of drug targets is although accurate but generally expensive, slow, and resource intensive. Therefore, computational methods are highly desirable as an alternative to expedite the large-scale identification of druggable proteins (DPs); however, the existing in silico predictor’s performance is still not satisfactory. Methods In this study, we developed a novel deep learning-based model DPI_CDF for predicting DPs based on protein sequence only. DPI_CDF utilizes evolutionary-based (i.e., histograms of oriented gradients for position-specific scoring matrix), physiochemical-based (i.e., component protein sequence representation), and compositional-based (i.e., normalized qualitative characteristic) properties of protein sequence to generate features. Then a hierarchical deep forest model fuses these three encoding schemes to build the proposed model DPI_CDF. Results The empirical outcomes on 10-fold cross-validation demonstrate that the proposed model achieved 99.13 % accuracy and 0.982 of Matthew’s-correlation-coefficient (MCC) on the training dataset. The generalization power of the trained model is further examined on an independent dataset and achieved 95.01% of maximum accuracy and 0.900 MCC. When compared to current state-of-the-art methods, DPI_CDF improves in terms of accuracy by 4.27% and 4.31% on training and testing datasets, respectively. We believe, DPI_CDF will support the research community to identify druggable proteins and escalate the drug discovery process. The global impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has been unprecedented, posing a significant public health challenge. Chronological age has been identified as a key determinant for severe outcomes associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Epigenetic age acceleration has previously been observed in various diseases including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Cytomegalovirus (CMV), cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. However, a comprehensive review of this topic is still missing in the field. In this review, we explore and summarize the research work focusing on biological aging markers, i.e., epigenetic age and telomere attrition in COVID-19 patients. From the reviewed articles, we identified a consistent pattern of epigenetic age dysregulation and shortened telomere length, revealing the impact of COVID-19 on epigenetic aging and telomere attrition.

Abstract Background The mRNA subcellular localization bears substantial impact in the regulation of gene expression, cellular migration, and adaptation. However, the methods employed for experimental determination of this localization are arduous, time-intensive, and come with a high cost. Methods In this research article, we tackle the essential challenge of predicting the subcellular location of messenger RNAs (mRNAs) through Unified mRNA Subcellular Localization Predictor (UMSLP), a machine learning (ML) based approach. We embrace an in silico strategy that incorporate four distinct feature sets: kmer, pseudo k-tuple nucleotide composition, nucleotide physicochemical attributes, and the 3D sequence depiction achieved via Z-curve transformation for predicting subcellular localization in benchmark dataset across five distinct subcellular locales, encompassing nucleus, cytoplasm, extracellular region (ExR), mitochondria, and endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Results The proposed ML model UMSLP attains cutting-edge outcomes in predicting mRNA subcellular localization. On independent testing dataset, UMSLP ahcieved over 87% precision, 94% specificity, and 94% accuracy. Compared to other existing tools, UMSLP outperformed mRNALocator, mRNALoc, and SubLocEP by 11%, 21%, and 32%, respectively on average prediction accuracy for all five locales. SHapley Additive exPlanations analysis highlights the dominance of k-mer features in predicting cytoplasm, nucleus, ER, and ExR localizations, while Z-curve based features play pivotal roles in mitochondria subcellular localization detection. In the context of Enhanced Remote Area Communications (ERAC), Radio over Fiber (RoF) technology plays a crucial role in extending reliable connectivity to underserved and remote areas. This paper explores the significance of fifth-generation (5G) Digital Predistortion (DPD) role in mitigating non-linearities in Radio over Fiber (RoF) systems for enhancing communication capabilities in remote regions. The seamless integration of RoF and 5G technologies requires robust linearization techniques to ensure high-quality signal transmission. In this paper, we propose and exhibit the effectiveness of a machine learning (ML)-based DPD method for linearizing next-generation Analog Radio over Fiber (A-RoF) links within the 5G landscape. The study investigates the use of an optimized recurrent neural network (ORNN) based DPD experimentally on a multiband 5G new radio (NR) A-RoF system while maintaining low complexity. The ORNN model is evaluated using flexible-waveform signals at 2.14 GHz and 5G NR signals at 10 GHz transmitted over a 10 km fiber length. The proposed ORNN-based machine learning approach is optimized and is compared with conventional generalized memory polynomial (GMP) model and canonical piecewise linearization (CPWL) methods in terms of Adjacent Channel Power Ratio (ACPR), Error Vector Magnitude (EVM), and in terms of computation complexity including, storage, time and memory consumption. The findings demonstrate that the proposed ORNN model reduces EVM to below 2% as compared to 12% for non-compensated cases while ACPR is reduced by 18 dBc, meeting 3GPP limits.

Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a prevalent chronic metabolic disorder linked to increased morbidity and mortality. With a significant portion of cases remaining undiagnosed, particularly in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region, more accurate and accessible diagnostic methods are essential. Current diagnostic tests like fasting plasma glucose (FPG), oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT), random plasma glucose (RPG), and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) have limitations, leading to misclassifications and discomfort for patients. The aim of this study is to enhance diabetes diagnosis accuracy by developing an improved predictive model using retinal images from the Qatari population, addressing the limitations of current diagnostic methods. This study explores an alternative approach involving retinal images, building upon the DiaNet model, the first deep learning model for diabetes detection based solely on retinal images. The newly proposed DiaNet v2 model is developed using a large dataset from Qatar Biobank (QBB) and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) covering wide range of pathologies in the the retinal images. Utilizing the most extensive collection of retinal images from the 5545 participants (2540 diabetic patients and 3005 control), DiaNet v2 is developed for diabetes diagnosis. DiaNet v2 achieves an impressive accuracy of over 92%, 93% sensitivity, and 91% specificity in distinguishing diabetic patients from the control group. Given the high prevalence of diabetes and the limitations of existing diagnostic methods in clinical setup, this study proposes an innovative solution. By leveraging a comprehensive retinal image dataset and applying advanced deep learning techniques, DiaNet v2 demonstrates a remarkable accuracy in diabetes diagnosis. This approach has the potential to revolutionize diabetes detection, providing a more accessible, non-invasive and accurate method for early intervention and treatment planning, particularly in regions with high diabetes rates like MENA.

The human genome is pervasively transcribed and produces a wide variety of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), constituting the majority of transcripts across human cell types. Some specific nuclear lncRNAs have been shown to be important regulatory components acting locally. As RNA-chromatin interaction and Hi-C chromatin conformation data showed that chromatin interactions of nuclear lncRNAs are determined by the local chromatin 3D conformation, we used Hi-C data to identify potential target genes of lncRNAs. RNA-protein interaction data suggested that nuclear lncRNAs act as scaffolds to recruit regulatory proteins to target promoters and enhancers. Nuclear lncRNAs may therefore play a role in directing regulatory factors to locations spatially close to the lncRNA gene. Speech impairments, resulting from brain injuries, mental disorders, or vocal abuse, substantially affect an individual’s quality of life and can lead to social isolation. Brain–Computer Interfaces (BCIs), particularly those based on EEG, offer a promising support mechanism by harnessing brain signals. Owing to their clinical efficacy, cost-effective EEG devices, and expanding applications in the medical and social spheres, their usage has surged. This study introduces an ensemble-based feature engineering mechanism to pinpoint the optimal brain rhythm, channel subset, and feature set for accurately predicting imagined words from EEG signals via machine learning models. Leveraging the 2020 International BCI competition dataset, we employed bandpass filtering, channel wrapping, and ranking methods were applied to discern suitable brain rhythms and features associated with imagined speech. Subsequent application of kernel-based principal component analysis enabled us to compress the feature space dimensionality. We then trained various machine learning models, among which the kNN model excelled, achieving an average accuracy of 73% in a 10-fold cross-validation scheme ,surpassing 18% higher than the existing literature. The Gamma rhythm was identified as the most predictive of imagined speech from EEG brain signals. These advancements herald a new era of more precise and effective BCIs, poised to significantly improve the lives of those with speech impairments.

The human ribosomal DNA (rDNA) copy number (CN) has been challenging to analyse, and its sequence has been excluded from reference genomes due to its highly repetitive nature. The 45S rDNA locus encodes essential components of the cell, nevertheless rDNA displays high inter-individual CN variation that could influence human health and disease. CN alterations in rDNA have been hypothesized as a possible factor in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and were shown to be altered in Schizophrenia patients. We tested whether whole-genome bisulphite sequencing can be used to simultaneously quantify rDNA CN and measure DNA methylation at the 45S rDNA locus. Using this approach, we observed high inter-individual variation in rDNA CN, and limited intra-individual copy differences in several post-mortem tissues. Furthermore, we did not observe any significant alterations in rDNA CN or DNA methylation in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) brains in 16 ASD vs 11 control samples. Similarly, no difference was detected when comparing neurons form 28 Schizophrenia (Scz) patients vs 25 controls or oligodendrocytes from 22 Scz samples vs 20 controls. However, our analysis revealed a strong positive correlation between CN and DNA methylation at the 45S rDNA locus in multiple tissues. This was observed in brain and confirmed in small intestine, adipose tissue, and gastric tissue. This should shed light on a possible dosage compensation mechanism that silences additional rDNA copies to ensure homoeostatic regulation of ribosome biogenesis.

Abstract Background Subcellular localization of messenger RNA (mRNAs) plays a pivotal role in the regulation of gene expression, cell migration as well as in cellular adaptation. Experiment techniques for pinpointing the subcellular localization of mRNAs are laborious, time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, in silico approaches for this purpose are attaining great attention in the RNA community. Methods In this article, we propose MSLP, a machine learning-based method to predict the subcellular localization of mRNA. We propose a novel combination of four types of features representing k-mer, pseudo k-tuple nucleotide composition (PseKNC), physicochemical properties of nucleotides, and 3D representation of sequences based on Z-curve transformation to feed into machine learning algorithm to predict the subcellular localization of mRNAs. Results Considering the combination of the above-mentioned features, ennsemble-based models achieved state-of-the-art results in mRNA subcellular localization prediction tasks for multiple benchmark datasets. We evaluated the performance of our method in ten subcellular locations, covering cytoplasm, nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), extracellular region (ExR), mitochondria, cytosol, pseudopodium, posterior, exosome, and the ribosome. Ablation study highlighted k-mer and PseKNC to be more dominant than other features for predicting cytoplasm, nucleus, and ER localizations. On the other hand, physicochemical properties and Z-curve based features contributed the most to ExR and mitochondria detection. SHAP-based analysis revealed the relative importance of features to provide better insights into the proposed approach. The use of technology, especially mobile phones, has significantly increased over the past few decades and has become an essential element in our daily lives. Mobile and desktop applications based on Augmented Reality (AR) proved to be a revolutionary step in different areas, especially in the educational sector. AR provides an improved and extended version of reality with the superimposition of a virtual object in the real-world environment. These objects can be interacted with and visualized in many ways to provide full AR experiences. By interacting with augmented virtual objects, students can visualize and completely understand various difficult concepts during their studies rather than traditional learning, allowing collaborative learning and hence improving learnability, motivation, and focus. This survey paper discusses the concept of AR and its types, the need for AR applications in education, analysis of various state-of-the-art AR applications in terms of platform, augmented virtual content, interactions, usability, usefulness, performance, effectiveness, and ease-of-use under a single taxonomy. Although applications of AR in education for learning, teaching, and simulating have proven quite effective in delivering the concepts via interactive study, there are also several limitations in terms of complexity and availability of hardware, platforms, internet connections, portability, computational, and rendering speed. This study offers insights into potential trends and directions that AR technology might take in education, furnishing readers with a glimpse of forthcoming developments. This comprehensive perspective equips educators, researchers, and practitioners with valuable insights into the pedagogical implications, technological aspects, and practical considerations related to AR.

Data generated from sources such as wearable sensors, medical imaging, personal health records, and public health organizations have resulted in a massive information increase in the medical sciences over the last decade. Advances in computational hardware, such as cloud computing, graphical processing units (GPUs), Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and tensor processing units (TPUs), provide the means to utilize these data. Consequently, an array of sophisticated Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques have been devised to extract valuable insights from the extensive datasets in the healthcare industry. Here, we present an overview of recent progress in AI and biosensors in medical and life sciences. We discuss the role of machine learning in medical imaging, precision medicine, and biosensors for the Internet of Things (IoT). We review the latest advancements in wearable biosensing technologies. These innovative solutions employ AI to assist in monitoring of bodily electro-physiological and electro-chemical signals, as well as in disease diagnosis. These advancements exemplify the trend towards personalized medicine, delivering highly effective, cost-efficient, and precise point-of-care treatment.Furthermore, an overview of the advances in computing technologies, such as accelerated AI, edge computing, and federated learning for medical data, are also documented. Finally, we investigate challenges in data-driven AI approaches, the potential issues generated by biosensors and IoT-based healthcare, and the distribution shifts that occur among different data modalities, concluding with an overview of future prospects.

Abstract Lung cancers with a mutated epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) are a major contributor to cancer fatalities globally. Targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have been developed against EGFR and show encouraging results for survival rate and quality of life. However, drug resistance may affect treatment plans and treatment efficacy may be lost after about a year. Predicting the response to EGFR-TKIs for EGFR-mutated lung cancer patients is a key research area. In this study, we propose a personalized drug response prediction model (PDRP), based on molecular dynamics simulations and machine learning, to predict the response of first generation FDA-approved small molecule EGFR-TKIs, Gefitinib/Erlotinib, in lung cancer patients. The patient’s mutation status is taken into consideration in molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Each patient’s unique mutation status was modeled considering MD simulation to extract molecular-level geometric features. Moreover, additional clinical features were incorporated into machine learning model for drug response prediction. The complete feature set includes demographic and clinical information (DCI), geometrical properties of the drug-target binding site, and the binding free energy of the drug-target complex from the MD simulation. PDRP incorporates an XGBoost classifier, which achieves state-of-the-art performance with 97.5% accuracy, 93% recall, 96.5% precision, and 94% F1-score, for a 4-class drug response prediction task. We found that modeling the geometry of the binding pocket combined with binding free energy is a good predictor for drug response. However, we observed that clinical information had a little impact on the performance of the model. The proposed model could be tested on other types of cancers. We believe PDRP will support the planning of effective treatment regimes based on clinical-genomic information. The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the need for novel drug discovery process. However, the journey from conceptualizing a drug to its eventual implementation in clinical settings is a long, complex, and expensive process, with many potential points of failure. Over the past decade, a vast growth in medical information has coincided with advances in computational hardware (cloud computing, GPUs, and TPUs) and the rise of deep learning. Medical data generated from large molecular screening profiles, personal health or pathology records, and public health organizations could benefit from analysis by Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches to speed up and prevent failures in the drug discovery pipeline. We present applications of AI at various stages of drug discovery pipelines, including the inherently computational approaches of de novo design and prediction of a drug's likely properties. Open-source databases and AI-based software tools that facilitate drug design are discussed along with their associated problems of molecule representation, data collection, complexity, labeling, and disparities among labels. How contemporary AI methods, such as graph neural networks, reinforcement learning, and generated models, along with structure-based methods, (i.e., molecular dynamics simulations and molecular docking) can contribute to drug discovery applications and analysis of drug responses is also explored. Finally, recent developments and investments in AI-based start-up companies for biotechnology, drug design and their current progress, hopes and promotions are discussed in this article.

COVID-19 has taken a huge toll on our lives over the last 3 years. Global initiatives put forward by all stakeholders are still in place to combat this pandemic and help us learn lessons for future ones. While the vaccine rollout was not able to curb the spread of the disease for all strains, the research community is still trying to develop effective therapeutics for COVID-19. Although Paxlovid and remdesivir have been approved by the FDA against COVID-19, they are not free of side effects. Therefore, the search for a therapeutic solution with high efficacy continues in the research community. To support this effort, in this latest version (v3) of COVID-19Base, we have summarized the biomedical entities linked to COVID-19 that have been highlighted in the scientific literature after the vaccine rollout. Eight different topic-specific dictionaries, i.e., gene, miRNA, lncRNA, PDB entries, disease, alternative medicines registered under clinical trials, drugs, and the side effects of drugs, were used to build this knowledgebase. We have introduced a BLSTM-based deep-learning model to predict the drug-disease associations that outperforms the existing model for the same purpose proposed in the earlier version of COVID-19Base. For the very first time, we have incorporated disease-gene, disease-miRNA, disease-lncRNA, and drug-PDB associations covering the largest number of biomedical entities related to COVID-19. We have provided examples of and insights into different biomedical entities covered in COVID-19Base to support the research community by incorporating all of these entities under a single platform to provide evidence-based support from the literature. The primary goal of this study is to develop a deep neural network for action recognition that enhances accuracy and minimizes computational costs. In this regard, we propose a modified EMO-MoviNet-A2* architecture that integrates Evolving Normalization (EvoNorm), Mish activation, and optimal frame selection to improve the accuracy and efficiency of action recognition tasks in videos. The asterisk notation indicates that this model also incorporates the stream buffer concept. The Mobile Video Network (MoviNet) is a member of the memory-efficient architectures discovered through Neural Architecture Search (NAS), which balances accuracy and efficiency by integrating spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal operations. Our research implements the MoviNet model on the UCF101 and HMDB51 datasets, pre-trained on the kinetics dataset. Upon implementation on the UCF101 dataset, a generalization gap was observed, with the model performing better on the training set than on the testing set. To address this issue, we replaced batch normalization with EvoNorm, which unifies normalization and activation functions. Another area that required improvement was key-frame selection. We also developed a novel technique called Optimal Frame Selection (OFS) to identify key-frames within videos more effectively than random or densely frame selection methods. Combining OFS with Mish nonlinearity resulted in a 0.8–1% improvement in accuracy in our UCF101 20-classes experiment. The EMO-MoviNet-A2* model consumes 86% fewer FLOPs and approximately 90% fewer parameters on the UCF101 dataset, with a trade-off of 1–2% accuracy. Additionally, it achieves 5–7% higher accuracy on the HMDB51 dataset while requiring seven times fewer FLOPs and ten times fewer parameters compared to the reference model, Motion-Augmented RGB Stream (MARS).

COVID-19 caused by the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 virus taking a huge toll on global health and caused life-threatening medical complications and elevated mortality rates, especially among older adults and people with existing morbidity. Current evidence suggests that the virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets emitted by infected persons when breathing, coughing, sneezing, or speaking. These droplets can reach another person through their mouth, nose, or eyes, resulting in infection. The “gold standard” for clinical diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 is the laboratory-based nucleic acid amplification test, which includes the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test on nasopharyngeal swab samples. The main concerns with this type of test are the relatively high cost, long processing time, and considerable false-positive or false-negative results. Alternative approaches have been suggested to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus so that those infected and the people they have been in contact with can be quickly isolated to break the transmission chains and hopefully, control the pandemic. These alternative approaches include electrochemical biosensing and deep learning. In this review, we discuss the current state-of-the-art technology used in both fields for public health surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 and present a comparison of both methods in terms of cost, sampling, timing, accuracy, instrument complexity, global accessibility, feasibility, and adaptability to mutations. Finally, we discuss the issues and potential future research approaches for detecting the SARS-CoV-2 virus utilizing electrochemical biosensing and deep learning.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is reported to be the leading cause of mortality in the middle eastern countries, including Qatar. But no comprehensive study has been conducted on the Qatar specific CVD risk factors identification. The objective of this case-control study was to develop machine learning (ML) model distinguishing healthy individuals from people having CVD, which could ultimately reveal the list of potential risk factors associated to CVD in Qatar. To the best of our knowledge, this study considered the largest collection of biomedical measurements representing the anthropometric measurements, clinical biomarkers, bioimpedance, spirometry, VICORDER readings, and behavioral factors of the CVD group from Qatar Biobank (QBB). CatBoost model achieved 93% accuracy, thereby outperforming the existing model for the same purpose. Interestingly, combining multimodal datasets into the proposed ML model outperformed the ML model built upon currently known risk factors for CVD, emphasizing the importance of incorporating other clinical biomarkers into consideration for CVD diagnosis plan. The ablation study on the multimodal dataset from QBB revealed that physio-clinical and bioimpedance measurements have the most distinguishing power to classify these two groups irrespective of gender and age of the participants. Multiple feature subset selection techniques confirmed known CVD risk factors (blood pressure, lipid profile, smoking, sedentary life, and diabetes), and identified potential novel risk factors linked to CVD-related comorbidities such as renal disorder (e.g., creatinine, uric acid, homocysteine, albumin), atherosclerosis (intima media thickness), hypercoagulable state (fibrinogen), and liver function (e.g., alkaline phosphate, gamma-glutamyl transferase). Moreover, the inclusion of the proposed novel factors into the ML model provides better performance than the model with traditional known risk factors for CVD. The association of the proposed risk factors and comorbidities are required to be investigated in clinical setup to understand their role in CVD better.

Multiple sensor data fusion is necessary for effective condition monitoring as the electric machines operate in a wide range of diverse operations. This study investigates sensor acquired vibration and current signals to establish a reliable multi-fault diagnosis framework of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor. Faults in stator and rotor were created deliberately by shorting two adjacent windings and creating a hole on the surface, respectively. The threshold for different health states was obtained by the third harmonic analysis of motor current. Later, the key features from sensor acquired current and vibration signals are selected based on monotonicity and reduced using the principal component analysis (PCA). For future predictions, an artificial neural network (ANN) is used to classify different fault features and its performance is evaluated using several metrics. Analysis of motor current harmonics and impulsive vibration response at the same time provides a thorough health estimation of BLDC motor in the presence of both electrical and mechanical faults. Multiple sensor information is fused to obtain a better understanding of the fault characteristics and mitigate the randomness of fault diagnosis. The proposed model was able to detect and classify multiple fault features with higher accuracy compared to other similar methods.

The pervasive nature of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcription in the mammalian genomes has changed our protein-centric view of genomes. But the identification of lncRNAs is an important task to discover their functional role in species. The rapid development of next-generation sequencing technology leveraged the opportunity to discover many lncRNA transcripts. However, the cost and time-consuming nature of transcriptomics verification techniques barred the research community from focusing on lncRNA identification. To overcome these challenges we developed LNCRI (Long Non-Coding RNA Identifier), a novel machine learning (ML)-based tool for the identification of lncRNA transcripts. We leveraged weighted k-mer, pseudo nucleotide composition, hexamer usage bias, Fickett score, information of open reading frame, UTR regions, and HMMER score as a feature set to develop LNCRI. LNCRI outperformed other existing models in the task of distinguishing lncRNA transcripts from protein-coding mRNA transcripts with high accuracy in human and mouse. LNCRI also outperformed the existing tools for cross-species prediction on chimpanzee, monkey, gorilla, orangutan, cow, pig, frog and zebrafish. We applied the SHAP algorithm to demonstrate the importance of most dominating features that were leveraged in the model. We believe our tool will support the research community to identify the lncRNA transcripts in a highly accurate manner. Diabetes is one of the leading fatal diseases globally, putting a huge burden on the global healthcare system. Early diagnosis of diabetes is hence, of utmost importance and could save many lives. However, current techniques to determine whether a person has diabetes or has the risk of developing diabetes are primarily reliant upon clinical biomarkers. In this article, we propose a novel deep learning architecture to predict if a person has diabetes or not from a photograph of his/her retina. Using a relatively small-sized dataset, we develop a multi-stage convolutional neural network (CNN)-based model DiaNet that can reach an accuracy level of over 84% on this task, and in doing so, successfully identifies the regions on the retina images that contribute to its decision-making process, as corroborated by the medical experts in the field. This is the first study that highlights the distinguishing capability of the retinal images for diabetes patients in the Qatari population to the best of our knowledge. Comparing the performance of DiaNet against the existing clinical data-based machine learning models, we conclude that the retinal images contain sufficient information to distinguish the Qatari diabetes cohort from the control group. In addition, our study reveals that retinal images may contain prognosis markers for diabetes and other comorbidities like hypertension and ischemic heart disease. The results led us to believe that the inclusion of retinal images into the clinical setup for the diagnosis of diabetes is warranted in the near future.

Islamic Finance has always been well known for its unique characteristics to deal with finance. However, few countries pay heed on Islamic rules and regulations and fewer actually prefer to run based on it, the reason is obvious the oppositional standpoint with capitalism. Nevertheless, as the world is facing serious public health crisis like COVID-19, and all normal economic activities cease to function properly, conventional finance is facing serious challenges handling this situation. Though COVID-19 has already been called as great equalizer, not discriminating based on any social, economic, or political strata, Under-developing countries are having quite a hard time surviving this crisis, and Bangladesh is not an exception, especially the vulnerable community of Bangladesh. The objective of this study is to find out the practical implication of Zakat as short-term emergency support system for vulnerable community of Dhaka north City Corporation. To conduct the study, primary source of data was used, following a semi-structure questionnaire using quantitative method of data collection, and convenience sampling style was used for limited mobility induced by COVID-19 lockdown. The study finds out that the practical implications of Zakat are quite useful especially as a short term emergency support system during the COVID-19 crisis, this study also finds out that Zakat can be used as a tool for building resilience also only if smaller number of Zakat recipients are selected.

Proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) offer a long-term, carbon-emission free solution to the energy needs of the transportation sector. However, high cost continues to limit PEMFC commercialization. Replacing expensive platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts with PGM-free catalysts could reduce cost, but the low active site density of PGM-free catalysts necessitates the use of thick electrodes that suffer from substantial mass transport losses. In these thick PGM-free electrodes, effective water management and oxygen transport are crucial to achieve high performance. In this work, we investigate the role of anode and cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL) configurations in controlling water management. Asymmetric GDL configurations, in which the anode GDL exhibits higher permeability than the cathode GDL, showed higher performance compared to conventional symmetric configurations. Computational modeling showed that the improved performance is mainly due to improved water management, resulting in lower liquid water saturation and faster oxygen transport in the cathode.

CSR is an obligation of corporate entity towards society for social development. The term was coined during 1950s and mostly practiced by developed countries so far. For least developed countries like Bangladesh, the practice of CSR wasn’t so popular before 1980s, in the years of 2016, Bangladesh ranked 31st largest economy, and in 2019 it ranked as 5th fastest growing economy around the world. With such exponential growth of Bangladesh economy, the private sector is currently booming with enormous potentiality, especially the banking industry. Following the drastic change of economy, Bangladesh government has declared 10% tax rebate on CSR activities to promote social development. The banking industry of Bangladesh is mainly dominated by two types of private commercial banks (PCBs), Conventional and Islami Shariah Based banks. The objective of this study is to find out the trends and preferences for CSR investment area of each bank type. The study was conducted by using secondary source of data, which was collected over the duration of 4 years (2015-2018). Online version of annual reports, CSR reports and journal were used in this study. Quantitative analysis method was used to find out the heavily and narrowly invested CSR areas. The study reveals that the both Islami Shariah Based PCBs and conventional PCBs invest heavily on 3 common areas (Disaster management, Education and Health) and narrowly invest on areas Sports, Arts-literature & culture and Environment, this study also indicates that Islami Shariah Based PCBs have significant higher CSR expenditure than conventional PCBs on prescribed CSR areas.

Electric motor is a prominent rotary machinery in many engineering applications due to its excellent electrical energy utilization. With the increased demand in production and complex operating conditions, motors often run in a severe loading condition. Overload, overheating and many other intricate operating conditions account for the stator related faults in motors. Motor current signature analysis (MCSA) and vibration analysis have been popular techniques to diagnose different stator and rotor related faults in motors. But it is difficult to find the fault magnitude or fault threshold by using only one approach due to nonstationary motor operations. This paper presents a comprehensive review of a permanent magnet brushless DC motor's (BLDC motor) fault diagnosis combining vibration and current signals collected from sensors. Since the insulation break in the stator winding is the most commonly occurring fault in the stator, a short-circuit was artificially created between two windings. Based on the motor operating conditions, three health states are chosen from the experimental sensor data with different fault magnitudes. Health states are labeled as healthy state, incipient failure state, and severe failure state. Two effective fault diagnosis indices named kurtosis and third harmonic of motor current are selected for analyzing the vibration signals and current signals, respectively. Proposed diagnostics framework is validated using experimental data and proven to detect the stator fault at the early stage as well as distinguish between different fault states. Monitoring both mechanical and electrical characteristics of BLDC motor provides a thorough understanding of fault magnitude and threshold in different health states.

Authorship discrimination is the task of detecting whether two writings are authored by the same person. From literature study to forensic analysis, the authorship discrimination makes a significant contribution in differentiating authorship. In this work, we propose Agree-to-Disagree (A2D), a novel framework for the authorship discrimination task. It is a two-stage deep learning-based framework consisting of an `Agree' and a `Disagree' network. At the first stage, it learns the authorship attributes with its Agree network. Subsequently, through its Disagree network, the framework attempts to differentiate the authorship of a new dataset (completely unrelated to the training dataset), a novel use case that has not been systematically considered hitherto in the literature. We show that A2D is not dependent on the dataset-specific prior knowledge and it can learn only from authorship attributes of the dataset to detect whether two different writings are from the same author. We prove that the A2D framework can successfully reveal the authorship with pseudonyms through tasking it with unfolding the pseudonyms of a famous American short story writer Washington Irving. We also apply our framework on a historical topic of ascertaining whether the authorship of the most respected book in Islam (the Holy Quran) can be attributed to the Prophet of Islam. Through the experimental analysis, A2D reveals that the Prophet of Islam is not the author of the Holy Quran, and this result is in perfect alignment with the belief of 1.8 billion Muslims around the globe regarding the authorship of this holy book.

Brushless DC motor, also referred to as BLDC motor, has been a widely used electric machine due to its excellent performance over conventional DC motors. Due to complex operating conditions and overloading, several irregularities can take place in a motor. Stator related faults are among the most commonly occurring faults in BLDC motor. With an initial raise in local heating, a fault in the stator can largely reduce motor efficiency and account for the entire system breakdown. In this study, we present a deep learning-based approach to estimate the remaining useful life (RUL) of BLDC motor affected by different stator related faults. To analyze the motor health degradation, we have investigated two types of stator faults namely inter-turn fault (ITF) and winding short-circuit fault (WSC). A generator was coupled with the motor and using an average value rectifier (AVR), generator's output voltage was monitored for the entire lifecycle. A proven neural network for effective sequence modeling, recurrent neural network (RNN) is selected to train the voltage degradation data. For a better estimation of nonlinear trends, long-short term memory (LSTM) with attention mechanism is chosen to make predictions of the motor RUL for both types of faults. The main concern that encourages authors of this paper is the proposed method can be used for the real-time condition monitoring and health state estimation of BLDC motors. Also, the proposed AVR-LSTM method is not affected by environmental influences, making it suitable for diverse operating conditions.

As football (soccer) is one of the most popular sports worldwide, winning football matches is becoming an essential aspect of football clubs. In this study, we analyzed football players' performance in a total of 864 football matches of the Qatar Stars League (QSL) between the years 2012 and 2019. For each match, the collective performance of the players in key playing positions was analyzed to understand their effectiveness in winning games. We formulated this study as a classification framework in the machine learning (ML) context to distinguish the winning team from the losing team in a match. This allowed us to check the effectiveness of different performance metrics considered a feature vector for ML models. Different ML models were considered for this classification task, and the logistic regression-based model was considered the best performing model, with more than 80% accuracy. Multiple feature selection methods were leveraged to identify players' performance metrics that could be considered as contributing factors to determine the match result. The proposed ML model identified several features, including (a) shots on target by forwarders (b) distance covered by forwarders and midfielders at very high speed (c) successful passes, that can be considered as effective performance metrics for winning a football match in QSL. Interestingly, we revealed that the defenders' role could not be ignored for match results, and playing fair games improves the chance of winning matches in QSL. We also showed that players' performance metrics from the last five seasons would provide sufficient discriminative power to the proposed ML model to predict the match-winner in the upcoming season. The proposed ML model will support the players, coaching staff, and team management to focus on specific performance metrics that may lead to winning a match in QSL.

A 35-year-old male of Asian ethnicity presented with complaints of high-grade fever, severe headache, vomiting, generalized seizures, deteriorated conscious level and neck stiffness. After all baseline workup Computed Tomography (CT) scan of the brain was done, which turned out to be unremarkable. CT scan was then followed by lumbar puncture (LP) and Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) detailed report was sent, which was highly suggestive of bacterial meningitis with the predominance of polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Later on, CSF culture and sensitivity report showed growth of Escherichia coli, which is one of the rare causes of meningitis in immunocompetent adults without any history of craniocerebral trauma, neurosurgical intervention, urinary or gastrointestinal tract infections, and an immunocompromised state. Diabetes mellitus (DM) and osteoporosis/osteopenia affect millions of people globally and are major health conditions in several countries including Qatar. Bone mineral density (BMD) is a widely accepted indicator for diagnosing osteoporosis (OP) and osteopenia (OPN). The best method for determining bone mineral density and OP/OPN risk is via dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) technology. The risk of osteoporosis-related fracture may increase for people with diabetes. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a system that can support the early detection of OP/OPN in diabetic patients. In this study, we analyzed Qatar diabetic cohorts including 500 subjects, among which 68 were OP/OPN (target) subjects and 432 were without osteoporosis/osteopenia (control) subjects. The objective of this study is to develop an ML model to distinguish diabetic OP/OPN patients from diabetic non-OP/non-OPN subjects based on their bone health indicators from full body DXA scan measurements. Based on our experiments, AdaBoost model performed the best for classifying the target group from the control group. 10-fold cross validation-based results indicate that the proposed ML model was able to distinguish the target group from the control group at 80% sensitivity, 96% specificity. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first ML-based approach to detect the early onset of OP/OPN in diabetic cohort from Qatar. Our analyses revealed the higher level of lean mass, fat mass and bone mass for the control group compared to the target group. Higher levels of BMC, BMD from different body parts in the control group compared to the osteoporosis/osteopenia group indicate the protective effects of obesity on bone health in the Qatari diabetic cohort. Moreover, higher value of anthropometric measurements in troch, lumbar spine (L1, L2, L3, L4), pelvis and other body parts in the control group indicates that the WHO guideline can be applied to the Qatari diabetic cohort for the early detection of OP/OPN based on the proposed ML model. Further research on OP/OPN in diabetic patients is warranted in future to confirm the role of DM on bone health.

BackgroundBipolar disorder (BD) is the 10th most common cause of frailty in young individuals and has triggered morbidity and mortality worldwide. Patients with BD have a life expectancy 9 to 17 years lower than that of normal people. BD is a predominant mental disorder, but it can be misdiagnosed as depressive disorder, which leads to difficulties in treating affected patients. Approximately 60% of patients with BD are treated for depression. However, machine learning provides advanced skills and techniques for better diagnosis of BD. ObjectiveThis review aims to explore the machine learning algorithms used for the detection and diagnosis of bipolar disorder and its subtypes. MethodsThe study protocol adopted the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews) guidelines. We explored 3 databases, namely Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and PubMed. To enhance the search, we performed backward screening of all the references of the included studies. Based on the predefined selection criteria, 2 levels of screening were performed: title and abstract review, and full review of the articles that met the inclusion criteria. Data extraction was performed independently by all investigators. To synthesize the extracted data, a narrative synthesis approach was followed. ResultsWe retrieved 573 potential articles were from the 3 databases. After preprocessing and screening, only 33 articles that met our inclusion criteria were identified. The most commonly used data belonged to the clinical category (19, 58%). We identified different machine learning models used in the selected studies, including classification models (18, 55%), regression models (5, 16%), model-based clustering methods (2, 6%), natural language processing (1, 3%), clustering algorithms (1, 3%), and deep learning–based models (3, 9%). Magnetic resonance imaging data were most commonly used for classifying bipolar patients compared to other groups (11, 34%), whereas microarray expression data sets and genomic data were the least commonly used. The maximum ratio of accuracy was 98%, whereas the minimum accuracy range was 64%. ConclusionsThis scoping review provides an overview of recent studies based on machine learning models used to diagnose patients with BD regardless of their demographics or if they were compared to patients with psychiatric diagnoses. Further research can be conducted to provide clinical decision support in the health industry.

Background: Brain traumas, mental disorders, and vocal abuse can result in permanent or temporary speech impairment, significantly impairing one’s quality of life and occasionally resulting in social isolation. Brain–computer interfaces (BCI) can support people who have issues with their speech or who have been paralyzed to communicate with their surroundings via brain signals. Therefore, EEG signal-based BCI has received significant attention in the last two decades for multiple reasons: (i) clinical research has capitulated detailed knowledge of EEG signals, (ii) inexpensive EEG devices, and (iii) its application in medical and social fields. Objective: This study explores the existing literature and summarizes EEG data acquisition, feature extraction, and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for decoding speech from brain signals. Method: We followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines to conduct this scoping review. We searched six electronic databases: PubMed, IEEE Xplore, the ACM Digital Library, Scopus, arXiv, and Google Scholar. We carefully selected search terms based on target intervention (i.e., imagined speech and AI) and target data (EEG signals), and some of the search terms were derived from previous reviews. The study selection process was carried out in three phases: study identification, study selection, and data extraction. Two reviewers independently carried out study selection and data extraction. A narrative approach was adopted to synthesize the extracted data. Results: A total of 263 studies were evaluated; however, 34 met the eligibility criteria for inclusion in this review. We found 64-electrode EEG signal devices to be the most widely used in the included studies. The most common signal normalization and feature extractions in the included studies were the bandpass filter and wavelet-based feature extraction. We categorized the studies based on AI techniques, such as machine learning and deep learning. The most prominent ML algorithm was a support vector machine, and the DL algorithm was a convolutional neural network. Conclusions: EEG signal-based BCI is a viable technology that can enable people with severe or temporal voice impairment to communicate to the world directly from their brain. However, the development of BCI technology is still in its infancy.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide. People affected by CVDs may go undiagnosed until the occurrence of a serious heart failure event such as stroke, heart attack, and myocardial infraction. In Qatar, there is a lack of studies focusing on CVD diagnosis based on non-invasive methods such as retinal image or dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). In this study, we aimed at diagnosing CVD using a novel approach integrating information from retinal images and DXA data. We considered an adult Qatari cohort of 500 participants from Qatar Biobank (QBB) with an equal number of participants from the CVD and the control groups. We designed a case-control study with a novel multi-modal (combining data from multiple modalities—DXA and retinal images)—to propose a deep learning (DL)-based technique to distinguish the CVD group from the control group. Uni-modal models based on retinal images and DXA data achieved 75.6% and 77.4% accuracy, respectively. The multi-modal model showed an improved accuracy of 78.3% in classifying CVD group and the control group. We used gradient class activation map (GradCAM) to highlight the areas of interest in the retinal images that influenced the decisions of the proposed DL model most. It was observed that the model focused mostly on the centre of the retinal images where signs of CVD such as hemorrhages were present. This indicates that our model can identify and make use of certain prognosis markers for hypertension and ischemic heart disease. From DXA data, we found higher values for bone mineral density, fat content, muscle mass and bone area across majority of the body parts in CVD group compared to the control group indicating better bone health in the Qatari CVD cohort. This seminal method based on DXA scans and retinal images demonstrate major potentials for the early detection of CVD in a fast and relatively non-invasive manner.

Currently, hydrogen energy is the most promising energy vector, while gasification is one of the major routes for its production. However, gasification suffers from various issues, including slower carbon conversion, poor syngas quality, lower heating value and higher emissions. Multiple factors affect gasification performance, such as the selection of gasifiers, feedstock’s physicochemical properties and operating conditions. In this review, the status of gasification, key gasifier technologies and the effect of solid-fuel (i.e., coal, biomass and MSW) properties on gasification performance are reviewed critically. Based on the current review, the co-gasification of coal, biomass and solid waste, along with a partial utilisation of CO2 as a reactant, are suggested. Furthermore, a technological breakthrough in carbon capture and sequestration is needed to make it industrially viable.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) can lead to plantar ulcers, amputation and death. Plantar foot thermogram images acquired using an infrared camera have been shown to detect changes in temperature distribution associated with a higher risk of foot ulceration. Machine learning approaches applied to such infrared images may have utility in the early diagnosis of diabetic foot complications. In this work, a publicly available dataset was categorized into different classes, which were corroborated by domain experts, based on a temperature distribution parameter—the thermal change index (TCI). We then explored different machine-learning approaches for classifying thermograms of the TCI-labeled dataset. Classical machine learning algorithms with feature engineering and the convolutional neural network (CNN) with image enhancement techniques were extensively investigated to identify the best performing network for classifying thermograms. The multilayer perceptron (MLP) classifier along with the features extracted from thermogram images showed an accuracy of 90.1% in multi-class classification, which outperformed the literature-reported performance metrics on this dataset.

Abstract Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection reveals complex and dynamic host-pathogen interactions, leading to host protection or pathogenesis. Using a unique transcriptome technology (CAGE), we investigated the promoter-based transcriptional landscape of IFNγ (M1) or IL-4/IL-13 (M2) stimulated macrophages during Mtb infection in a time-kinetic manner. Mtb infection widely and drastically altered macrophage-specific gene expression, which is far larger than that of M1 or M2 activations. Gene Ontology enrichment analysis for Mtb-induced differentially expressed genes revealed various terms, related to host-protection and inflammation, enriched in up-regulated genes. On the other hand, terms related to dis-regulation of cellular functions were enriched in down-regulated genes. Differential expression analysis revealed known as well as novel transcription factor genes in Mtb infection, many of them significantly down-regulated. IFNγ or IL-4/IL-13 pre-stimulation induce additional differentially expressed genes in Mtb-infected macrophages. Cluster analysis uncovered significant numbers, prolonging their expressional changes. Furthermore, Mtb infection augmented cytokine-mediated M1 and M2 pre-activations. In addition, we identified unique transcriptional features of Mtb-mediated differentially expressed lncRNAs. In summary we provide a comprehensive in depth gene expression/regulation profile in Mtb-infected macrophages, an important step forward for a better understanding of host-pathogen interaction dynamics in Mtb infection.

An effective remaining useful life (RUL) estimation method is of great concern in industrial machinery to ensure system reliability and reduce the risk of unexpected failures. Anticipation of an electric motor’s future state can improve the yield of a system and warrant the reuse of the industrial asset. In this paper, we present an effective RUL estimation framework of brushless DC (BLDC) motor using third harmonic analysis and output apparent power monitoring. In this work, the mechanical output of the BLDC motor is monitored through a coupled generator. To emphasize the total power generation, we have analyzed the trend of apparent power, which preserves the characteristics of real power and reactive power in an AC power system. A normalized modal current (NMC) is used to extract the current features from the BLDC motor. Fault characteristics of motor current and generator power are fused using a Kalman filter to estimate the RUL. Degradation patterns for the BLDC motor have been monitored for three different scenarios and for future predictions, an attention layer optimized bidirectional long short-term memory (ABLSTM) neural network model is trained. ABLSTM model’s performance is evaluated based on several metrics and compared with other state-of-the-art deep learning models.

Sense-antisense interactions of long and short RNAs in human cells are integral to post-transcriptional gene regulation, in particular that of mRNAs by microRNAs. Many viruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 SARS-CoV-2 (the causative agent of coronavirus disease 2019, COVID-19), have RNA genomes, and interactions between host and viral RNAs, while known to be functional in other viral diseases, have not yet been investigated in COVID-19. To remedy this gap in knowledge, we present miRCOVID-19, a computational meta-analysis framework identifying the predicted binding sites of human microRNAs along the SARS-CoV-2 RNA genome. To highlight the potential relevance of SARS-CoV-2-genome-complementary miRNAs to COVID-19 pathogenesis, we assessed their expression in COVID-19-relevant tissues using public transcriptome data. miRCOVID-19 identified 14 high-confidence mature miRNAs that are highly likely to interact with the SARS-CoV-2 genome and are expressed in diverse respiratory epithelial and immune cell types that are relevant to COVID-19 pathogenesis. As a proof of principle, we have shown that human miR-122, a previously known co-factor of another RNA virus, the hepatitis C virus (HCV) whose genome it binds as a prerequisite for pathogenesis, was predicted to also bind the SARS-CoV-2 RNA genome with high affinity, suggesting the perspective of repurposing anti-HCV RNA-based drugs, such as Miravirsen, to treat COVID-19. Our study is the first to identify all high-confidence binding sites of human miRNAs in the SARS-CoV-2 genome using multiple tools. Our work directly facilitates experimental validation of the reported targets, which would accelerate RNA-based drug discovery for COVID-19 and has the potential to provide new avenues for treating symptomatic COVID-19, and block SARS-CoV-2 replication, in humans.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNA), the pervasively transcribed part of the mammalian genome, have played a significant role in changing our protein-centric view of genomes. The abundance of lncRNAs and their diverse roles across cell types have opened numerous avenues for the research community regarding lncRNAome. To discover and understand lncRNAome, many sophisticated computational techniques have been leveraged. Recently, deep learning (DL)-based modeling techniques have been successfully used in genomics due to their capacity to handle large amounts of data and produce relatively better results than traditional machine learning (ML) models. DL-based modeling techniques have now become a choice for many modeling tasks in the field of lncRNAome as well. In this review article, we summarized the contribution of DL-based methods in nine different lncRNAome research areas. We also outlined DL-based techniques leveraged in lncRNAome, highlighting the challenges computational scientists face while developing DL-based models for lncRNAome. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review article that summarizes the role of DL-based techniques in multiple areas of lncRNAome.

Obesity is an emerging public health problem in the Western world as well as in the Gulf region. Qatar, a tiny wealthy county, is among the top-ranked obese countries with a high obesity rate among its population. Compared to Qatar’s severity of this health crisis, only a limited number of studies focused on the systematic identification of potential risk factors using multimodal datasets. This study aims to develop machine learning (ML) models to distinguish healthy from obese individuals and reveal potential risk factors associated with obesity in Qatar. We designed a case-control study focused on 500 Qatari subjects, comprising 250 obese and 250 healthy individuals- the later forming the control group. We obtained the most extensive collection of clinical measurements for the Qatari population from the Qatar Biobank (QBB) repertoire, including (i) Physio-clinical Biomarkers, (ii) Spirometry, (iii) VICORDER, (iv) DXA scan composition, and (v) DXA scan densitometry readings. We developed several machine learning (ML) models to distinguish healthy from obese individuals and applied multiple feature selection techniques to identify potential risk factors associated with obesity. The proposed ML model achieved over 90% accuracy, thereby outperforming the existing state of the art models. The outcome from the ablation study on multimodal clinical datasets revealed physio-clinical measurements as the most influential risk factors in distinguishing healthy versus obese subjects. Furthermore, multiple feature ranking techniques confirmed known obesity risk factors (c-peptide, insulin, albumin, uric acid) and identified potential risk factors linked to obesity-related comorbidities such as diabetes (e.g., HbA1c, glucose), liver function (e.g., alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transferase), lipid profile (e.g., triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol), etc. Most of the DXA measurements (e.g., bone area, bone mineral composition, bone mineral density, etc.) were significantly (p-value < 0.05) higher in the obese group. Overall, the net effect of hypothesized protective factors of obesity on bone mass seems to have surpassed the hypothesized harmful factors. All the identified factors warrant further investigation in a clinical setup to understand their role in obesity.

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are leading candidates to decarbonize the transport sector, but widespread deployment will require improvements in lifetime, fuel economy and cost. Here we present the grooved electrode, an alternative electrode structure that enhances PEMFC performance and durability by coupling high ionomer (ion-conducting binder) content for improved H+ transport with grooves for rapid O2 transport. Grooved electrodes provide up to 50% higher performance than state-of-the-art conventional electrodes under standard operating conditions. Fuel cell diagnostics combined with multiphysics modelling demonstrate that grooved electrodes provide facile O2 transport despite their high ionomer content, enabling improved reaction rate uniformity. Grooved electrodes also provide improved durability, with less performance loss after carbon corrosion compared with baseline electrodes. Machine learning analysis demonstrates the potential to further optimize grooved structures for next-generation PEMFCs with enhanced performance and durability, enabling smaller and cheaper fuel cell stacks with higher fuel efficiency.
