Abstract The pathogen Verticillium dahliae secreted effector V. dahliae Aspf2-like protein (VDAL) has been found to cause leaf wilting in cotton, but the ectopic expression of VDAL-encoding gene enhances the resistance to V. dahliae in cotton and Arabidopsis. The application of the VDAL protein powder with optimal dosage promotes the growth and yield in multiple crop species, such as rice and wheat. However, the promotive effects of VDAL on these aspects are sporadically reported in asexually propagated species, including potato, while the molecular regulatory network involved in the process remains unclear. In this study, we observed that VDAL promotes sprouting of the potato pre-basic seed (PBS) tubers and enhances the development of both above-ground and below-ground tissues. Strikingly, VDAL increases the tuber yield in both greenhouse and field trials by up to 18.97%. The time-course transcriptomic analysis and the endogenous phytohormone detection revealed that cytokinin may play an important role in response to VDAL-promoted growth. Interestingly, VDAL-treated PBS tubers show higher resistance to cold temperature (late-spring cold), a phenomenon that is diminished when the lovastatin, a cytokinin inhibitor is applied, indicating that the VDAL-promoted potato growth, particularly under low temperature, is associated with cytokinin.

Abstract Background Research has identified a link between the triglyceride-glucose index (TyG-i) and the risk of mortality in severely ill patients. However, it remains uncertain if the TyG-i affects mortality by influencing heart rate (HR). Methods This study enrolled 3,509 severely ill participants from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV) database who had triglyceride, glucose, and HR data upon entering the ICU. Cox regression models were applied to estimate the effect of the TyG-i and HR on 28-day all-cause mortality (ACM) and 28-day in-hospital mortality (IHM). Additionally, Kaplan-Meier (K-M) survival analysis was employed to explore outcome variations among different patient groups. The association of the TyG-i with HR, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, and Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS) II was explored through linear regression analysis. Subgroup analysis explored potential interactions among patient characteristics, while sensitivity analysis gauged the robustness of the findings. Additionally, mediation analysis was conducted to assess whether elevated HR acts as an intermediary factor linking the TyG-i to both 28-day ACM and 28-day IHM. Results During the 28-day follow-up, 586 cases (16.7%) died from all causes, and 439 cases (12.5%) died during hospitalisation. Cox results showed that individuals with a heightened TyG-i and elevated HR had the highest 28-day ACM (Hazard Ratio 1.70, P-value below 0.001) and 28-day IHM (Hazard Ratio 1.72, P-value below 0.001) compared to those with a reduced TyG-i and HR. The K-M curves showed that individuals with low TyG-i and low HR had the lowest incidence of 28-day ACM and 28-day IHM. The linear analysis results evidenced that the TyG-i was independently connected to HR (beta = 3.05, P-value below 0.001), and the TyG-i was also independently associated with SOFA score (beta = 0.39, P-value below 0.001) and SAPS II (beta = 1.79, P-value below 0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed a significant association in participants without hypertension, the interaction of an elevated TyG-i and HR strongly correlated with a higher 28-day death risk (interaction P-value below 0.05). Furthermore, HR mediated 29.5% of the connection between the TyG-i and 28-day ACM (P-value = 0.002), as well as 20.4% of the connection between the TyG-i and 28-day IHM (P-value = 0.002). Conclusion For severely ill patients, the TyG-i is distinctly correlated with HR, and elevated levels of both are strongly connected to greater 28-day ACM and 28-day IHM risks, especially in patients without hypertension. Furthermore, elevated HR mediates the connection between the TyG-i and 28-day mortality.

Abstract Objective An alternative metric for evaluating insulin resistance (IR) is the triglyceride glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI). However, it is yet unclear how TyG-BMI and suicide attempts (SA) are related. The objective of this research was to explore the correlation between the TyG-BMI index and SA in individuals with untreated first-episode (UFE) major depressive disorder (MDD) in Shanxi Province. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2016 to December 2018 in the psychiatric outpatient clinic of Taiyuan General Hospital and included 1718 patients with UFE MDD, with a mean age of 34.9 ± 12.4 years. The relationship between TyG-BMI and SA was assessed using logistic regression modeling. We investigated threshold effects using a two-piecewise linear regression model. Results Taking into consideration the potential influence of confounding variables, a comprehensive multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted, which demonstrated the absence of a statistically significant association between the TyG-BMI index and the occurrence of SA, as evidenced by P-values that were all greater than 0.05. On the other hand, the visual analysis of the smoothed plots revealed a U-shaped relationship between the TyG-BMI index and the incidence of SA, with a notable inflection occurring at a TyG-BMI value of around 210. It was observed that the effect sizes flanking the inflection point, accompanied by their 95% confidence intervals, were 0.985 (95% CI: 0.972 to 0.999, P = 0.031) and 1.012 (95% CI: 1.003 to 1.047, P = 0.005), respectively. Conclusions In UFE MDD patients, a U-shaped link was observed between TyG-BMI and SA, with the minimal SA incidence noted at a TyG-BMI level of 210, signifying that an augmented risk for SA might be connected to both diminished and augmented TyG-BMI levels.

Abstract Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint condition characterised by cartilage deterioration and changes in bone morphology, resulting in pain and impaired joint mobility. Investigation into the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying OA has highlighted the significance of mitochondrial dysfunction in its progression. Mitochondria, which are cellular organelles, play a crucial role in regulating energy metabolism, generating reactive oxygen species, and facilitating essential biological processes including apoptosis. In recent years, the utilisation of exogenous drugs and MT to improve mitochondrial function in chondrocytes has shown great promise in OA treatment. Numerous studies have investigated the potential of stem cells and extracellular vesicles in mitochondrial transfer. This review aims to explore the underlying mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction in OA and assess the progress in utilising mitochondrial transfer as a therapeutic approach for this disease.

Abstract In an era characterized by the rapid proliferation of distributed flexible resources (DFRs), the development of customized energy management and regulation strategies has attracted significant interest from the field. The inherent geographical dispersion and unpredictability of these resources, however, pose substantial barriers to their effective and computationally tractable regulation. To address these impediments, this paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning‐based distributed resource energy management strategy, taking into account the inherent physical and structural constraints of the distribution network. This proposed strategy is modelled as a sequential decision‐making framework with a Markov decision process, informed by physical states and external information. In particular, targeting the community energy management system for critical public infrastructure and community holistic benefits maximization, the proposed approach proficiently adapts to fluctuations in resource variability and fluctuating market prices, ensuring intelligent regulation of distributed flexible resources. Simulation and empirical analysis demonstrate that the proposed deep reinforcement learning‐based strategy can improve the economic benefits and decision‐making efficiency of distributed flexible resource regulation while ensuring the security of distribution network power flow.

Abstract The air gap magnetic field of a magnetic coupling plays a crucial role in the examination of its static torque and eddy current losses. Precise characterization of the air gap magnetic field is essential for ensuring the accuracy of performance assessments of the magnetic coupling. This study focuses on the cylindrical magnetic coupling as the subject of investigation, employing mathematical analysis and finite element methods to evaluate and quantify the magnetic field properties. The study establishes a mathematical model of the magnetic field of a magnetic coupling based on electromagnetic field principles and the superposition theorem. An analytical formula for the magnetic flux density distribution of the air-gap magnetic field is derived. Subsequently, a three-dimensional magnetic field finite element model is created using the finite element method to numerically calculate the air gap magnetic field and validate the analytical formula. The research also explores the periodic distribution characteristics of the magnetic field in the air gap, analyzing axial differences in magnetic flux density value and direction distribution influenced by end effects.

Abstract Aiming at the problem that the edge artifacts of Si3N4 ceramic bearing rolling element microcracks have low contrast, contain noise, and easily merge with the background, making it difficult to segment. A method based on 2D discrete wavelet transform and Otsu threshold segmentation is designed to achieve the extraction of microcrack edge artifact features. Wavelet decomposition is used to remove noise, while wavelet reconstruction features are used to restore lost details. Creation of 2D discrete wavelet transform functional equations combining wavelet reconstruction and wavelet decomposition to improve contrast and eliminate noise in images featuring edge artifacts. For the problem of feature edge artifacts that are difficult to remove, the threshold segmentation function equation is designed to maximize the interclass variance, and the optimal threshold value is selected to remove the edge artifacts. The experimental results show that the average PSNR of the Si3N4 ceramic bearing rolling body point, line, and surface microcrack edge artifact feature images enhanced by the method in this paper is close to 62.69 dB, and the average SSIM is about 0.77. The method in this paper improves the contrast of microcrack edge artifact features of Si3N4 ceramic bearing rolling bodies and makes the feature extraction effect of point, line, and surface microcrack edge artifacts more complete.

Abstract Phytopathogens often secrete effectors to enhance their infection of plants. In the case of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, a necrotrophic phytopathogen, a secreted protein named SsPEIE1 (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum Plant Early Immunosuppressive Effector 1) plays a crucial role in its virulence. During the early stages of infection, SsPEIE1 is significantly up-regulated. Additionally, transgenic plants expressing SsPEIE1 exhibit increased susceptibility to different phytopathogens. Further investigations revealed that SsPEIE1 interacts with a plasma membrane protein known as hypersensitive induced reaction (HIR) that dampens immune responses. SsPEIE1 is required for S. sclerotiorum virulence on wild-type Arabidopsis but not on Arabidopsis hir4 mutants. Moreover, Arabidopsis hir2 and hir4 mutants exhibit suppressed pathogen-associated molecular pattern-triggered reactive oxygen species (ROS) bursts and salicylic acid (SA)-associated immune gene induction, all of which are phenocopied by the SsPEIE1 transgenic plants. We find that the oligomerization of AtHIR4 is essential for its role in mediating immunity, and that SsPEIE1 inhibits its oligomerization through competitively binding to AtHIR4. Remarkably, both Arabidopsis and rapeseed plants overexpress AtHIR4 display significantly increased resistance to S. sclerotiorum. In summary, these results demonstrate that SsPEIE1 inhibits AtHIR4 oligomerization-mediated immune responses by interacting with the key immune factor AtHIR4, thereby promoting S. sclerotiorum infection.

Abstract The full life-cycle state monitoring of bridge structures is an effective way to ensure traffic safety and is also an important trend in the development of modern transportation. The accuracy, traceability, and reliability of sensor data are the foundation for the Bridge Health Monitoring (BHM) system to achieve its various functions. However, commonly seen uncertainties in measurement results of the monitoring system such as error, linearity, and repeatability often need to be calibrated to ensure accuracy and reliability of the data. Therefore, the calibration of these basic uncertain elements has been brought to our research focus. In this study, we first comb the monitoring parameters and characteristics of different sensor systems to help select suitable bridge structure monitoring sensors and adopt appropriate calibration and traceability strategies. Then, in combination with the research on traditional sensor calibration techniques and new sensor calibration technology, we present the key factors to be considered in the sensor calibration process and the challenges faced by the current technologies. Finally, suggestions are made for the research trend on the calibration of bridge monitoring sensors, aiming to provide reference for both theoretical and practical studies on bridge sensor calibration in the future.

In order to prevent the occurrence of coal mine roof accidents more scientifically, it is crucial to identify the causal factors of coal mine roof accidents and their association rules. First, 56 causal factors affecting the occurrence of roof accidents were identified through text mining and combined with the SIF accident causal model. Second, we constructed a roof accident database and utilized the Apriori algorithm to mine the association rules of roof accidents. Finally, the complex network diagram of the causal factors of roof accidents was drawn, and the core causal factors of roof accidents and the correlation rules between the causal factors were comprehensively analyzed. The results show that there is a high degree of correlation and enhancement between safety training and education, safety supervision and management, low safety awareness and violation of work procedures by operators, inadequate management of the on-duty management and other causes of accidents, and these factors are the core factors causing roof accidents in coal mines.

Abstract Background Endonucleases play a crucial role in plant growth and stress response by breaking down nuclear DNA. However, the specific members and biological functions of the endonuclease encoding genes in wheat remain to be determined. Results In this study, we identified a total of 26 TaENDO family genes at the wheat genome-wide level. These genes were located on chromosomes 2 A, 2B, 2D, 3 A, 3B, and 3D and classified into four groups, each sharing similar gene structures and conserved motifs. Furthermore, we identified diverse stress-response and growth-related cis-elements in the promoter of TaENDO genes, which were broadly expressed in different organs, and several TaENDO genes were significantly induced under drought and salt stresses. We further examined the biological function of TaENDO23 gene since it was rapidly induced under drought stress and exhibited high expression in spikes and grains. Subcellular localization analysis revealed that TaENDO23 was localized in the cytoplasm of wheat protoplasts. qRT-PCR results indicated that the expression of TaENDO23 increased under PEG6000 and abscisic acid treatments, but decreased under NaCl treatment. TaENDO23 mainly expressed in leaves and spikes. A kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) marker was developed to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms in TaENDO23 gene in 256 wheat accessions. The alleles with TaENDO23-HapI haplotypes had higher grain weight and size compared to TaENDO23-HapII. The geographical and annual frequency distributions of the two TaENDO23 haplotypes revealed that the elite haplotype TaENDO23-HapI was positively selected in the wheat breeding process. Conclusion We systematically analyzed the evolutionary relationships, gene structure characteristics, and expression patterns of TaENDO genes in wheat. The expression of TaENDO23, in particular, was induced under drought stress, mainly expressed in the leaves and grains. The KASP marker of TaENDO23 gene successfully distinguished between the wheat accessions, revealing TaENDO23-HapI as the elite haplotype associated with improved grain weight and size. These findings provide insights into the evolution and characteristics of TaENDO genes at the genome-wide level in wheat, laying the foundation for further biological analysis of TaENDO23 gene, especially in response to drought stress and grain development.

Abstract Indoor photovoltaics (IPVs) have attracted increasing attention for sustainably powering Internet of Things (IoT) electronics. Sb2S3 is a promising IPV candidate material with a bandgap of ~1.75 eV, which is near the optimal value for indoor energy harvesting. However, the performance of Sb2S3 solar cells is limited by nonradiative recombination, which is dependent on the quality of the absorber films. Additive engineering is an effective strategy to fine tune the properties of solution-processed films. This work shows that the addition of monoethanolamine (MEA) into the precursor solution allows the nucleation and growth of Sb2S3 films to be controlled, enabling the deposition of high-quality Sb2S3 absorbers with reduced grain boundary density, optimized band positions, and increased carrier concentration. Complemented with computations, it is revealed that the incorporation of MEA leads to a more efficient and energetically favorable deposition for enhanced heterogeneous nucleation on the substrate, which increases the grain size and accelerates the deposition rate of Sb2S3 films. Due to suppressed carrier recombination and improved charge-carrier transport in Sb2S3 absorber films, the MEA-modulated Sb2S3 solar cell yields a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.22% under AM1.5 G illumination, and an IPV PCE of 17.55% under 1000 lux white light emitting diode (WLED) illumination, which is the highest yet reported for Sb2S3 IPVs. Furthermore, we construct high performance large-area Sb2S3 IPV minimodules to power IoT wireless sensors, and realize the long-term continuous recording of environmental parameters under WLED illumination in an office. This work highlights the great prospect of Sb2S3 photovoltaics for indoor energy harvesting.

Abstract Drought and salt stress are two important environmental factors that significantly restrict plant growth and reproduction. Malate dehydrogenase is essential to life as it is engaged in numerous physiological processes in cells, particularly those related to abiotic stress reactions. However, a complete understanding of MDH family members in kenaf is not clear yet. In this study, subcellular localization analysis and a yeast transcriptional activation assay revealed that HcMDH1 was localized in chloroplasts but had no transcriptional activation activity. When exposed to salt or drought stress, yeast cells expressing the HcMDH1 gene exhibit an increased survival rate. Overexpression of HcMDH1 in Arabidopsis increased seed germination rate and root growth when transgenic lines were exposed to varying concentrations of mannitol and NaCl. Subsequent physiological studies revealed that transgenic lines had higher concentrations of soluble carbohydrates, proline, and chlorophyll and lower concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Furthermore, inhibiting HcMDH1 in kenaf using virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) decreased salt and drought tolerance due to elevated ROS and MDA levels. In these silenced lines, the expression of six essential genes engaged in stress-resistance and photosynthesis, namely HcGAPDH, HcGLYK, HcFBA, HcFBPase, HcPGA, and HcLSD, is significantly altered under salt and drought stress. In summary, HcMDH1 is a complex and positive regulatory gene that plays a key role in regulating chlorophyll content, antioxidant enzyme activity and osmotic regulation under salt and drought stress, which may have implications for kenaf transgenic breeding. Abstract This study pooled data from SPRINT (Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial) and ACCORD-BP (Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes Blood Pressure) trial to estimate the treatment effect of intensive BP on stroke prevention, and investigate whether stroke risk score impacted treatment effect. Of all the potential manifestations of the hypertension, the most severe outcomes were stroke or death. A composite endpoint of time to death or stroke (stroke-free survival [SFS]), whichever occurred first, was defined as the outcome of interest. Participants without prevalent stroke were stratified into stroke risk tertiles based on the predicted revised Framingham Stroke Risk Score. The stratified Cox model was used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) for the intensive BP treatment. 834 (5.92%) patients had SFS events over a median follow-up of 3.68 years. A reduction in the risk for SFS was observed among the intensive BP group as compared with the standard BP group (HR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.65, 0.89; risk difference: 0.98([0.20, 1.76]). Further analyses demonstrated the significant benefit of intensive BP treatment on SFS only among participants having a high stroke risk (risk tertile 1: 0.76 [0.52, 1.11], number needed to treat [NNT] = 861; risk tertile 2: 0.87[0.65, 1.16], NNT = 91; risk tertile 3: 0.69[0.56, 0.86], NNT = 50). Intensive BP treatment lowered the risk of SFS, particularly for those at high risk of stroke.

Abstract Background Populations of Olea europaea subsp. europaea var. sylvestris, the ancestor of cultivated olives, are scattered across the Mediterranean Basin. However, after millennia of possible hybridization with cultivated varieties, the genetic identity of many of these populations remain questionable. In the southern Levant, the plausible primary domestication center of olives, many of the naturally growing olive (NGOs) are considered feral, having developed from nearby olive groves. Here, we investigated the genetic identity of NGOs population in the Carmel region, hypothesizing that their specific location, which limit anemophily, provided an opportunity for the persistence of genuine var. sylvestris. Results We mapped more than 1,000 NGOs on the Kurkar ridge along the Carmel coast, within and outside the residential area of Atlit and used simple sequence repeats of 14 loci to assess the spatial genetic structure of 129 NGOs. Genetic diversity parameters and genetic distances between NGO and cultivated olives, as well as phenotypic and morphometric analyses of their oil content and pits, respectively, indicated the presence of a genuine var. sylvestris population. However, NGOs within the residential area of Atlit and old settlements showed an intermediate admix genetic structure, indicating on hybridization with local varieties, a consequence of their proximity to cultivated trees. Conclusions Integrating the results of genetic and phenotypic analyses we provide crucial evidence of the presence of a genuine var. sylvestris population in the southern Levant, in close geographical proximity to archaeological sites with the earliest evidence of olive exploitation in the ancient world. We supplement the results with recommendations for a conservation program that combines municipal requirements and the urgent need to preserve the largest population of var. sylvestris in the southern Levant.

Abstract Background Cognitive impairment presents in both adolescent-onset(ado-OP) and adult-onset psychosis(adu-OP). Age and neurodevelopmental factors likely contribute to cognitive differences. This study aimed to characterize cognitive functions in ado-OP compared to adu-OP in a clinical population with drug-naive first-episode psychosis(FEP). Methods A total of 788 drug-naive patients with FEP and 774 sex- and age-matched healthy controls(HCs) were included. Participants were divided into four groups by whether they were under or over 21 years of age: adolescent-onset FEP(ado-FEP, n = 380), adult-onset FEP(adu-FEP, n = 408), adolescent HC(ado-HC, n = 334), and adult HC(adu-HC, n = 440). Comprehensive cognitive assessments were performed using the MATRICS Cognitive Consensus Battery(MCCB), covers six cognitive domains: speed of processing, attention/vigilance, working memory, verbal learning, visual learning, reasoning, and problem-solving. Data analyses were conducted using correlation analyses and binary logistic regression. Results The patterns of cognitive domain differences between ado-FEP and adu-FEP were found to be similar to those between ado-HC and adu-HC, whereas cognitive impairments appeared to be more pronounced in patients with adu-OP than ado-OP. The mazes subtest had the maximum effect size(ES) in the FEP(ES = 0.37) and HC(ES = 0.30) groups when comparing the adolescent and adult groups. Cognitive subtests were mostly significantly correlated with negative symptoms, especially for adolescents with FEP, in which all the subtests were significantly correlated with negative symptoms in the ado-FEP group. Better performance in the domains of spatial cognition and problem-solving abilities was more likely in the ado-FEP group than in the adu-FEP group. Conclusions These findings suggest cognitive differences between adolescents and adults but similar patterns of affected domains in HCs and patients with FEP. Therefore, the development of targeted cognitive interventions tailored to the specific needs of different age groups appears warranted.

Nonstationary time series are ubiquitous in almost all natural and engineering systems. Capturing the time-varying signatures from nonstationary time series is still a challenging problem for data mining. Quadratic Time-Frequency Distribution (TFD) provides a powerful tool to analyze these data. However, they suffer from Cross-Term (CT) issues that impair the readability of TFDs. Therefore, to achieve high-resolution and CT-free TFDs, an end-to-end architecture termed Quadratic TF-Net (QTFN) is proposed in this paper. Guided by classic TFD theory, the design of this deep learning architecture is heuristic, which firstly generates various basis functions through data-driven. Thus, more comprehensive TF features can be extracted by these basis functions. Then, to balance the results of various basis functions adaptively, the Efficient Channel Attention (ECA) block is also embedded into QTFN. Moreover, a new structure called Muti-scale Residual Encoder-Decoder (MRED) is also proposed to improve the learning ability of the model by highly integrating the multi-scale learning and encoder-decoder architecture. Finally, although the model is only trained by synthetic signals, both synthetic and real-world signals are tested to validate the generalization capability and superiority of the proposed QTFN.

Abstract There is still a paucity of research on the relationship between triglyceride-glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI) and long-term all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between the TyG-BMI index and mortality rate and to determine valuable predictive factors for the survival status of this population. Data were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2001–2018) and the National Death Index (NDI). We used multivariate Cox regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) to analyze the link between the TyG-BMI index and all-cause and CVD mortality. Subgroup analysis was conducted according to age, gender, race, education and poverty. In addition, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were utilized to assess the differentiation of the TyG-BMI index in predicting mortality. A total of 3089 individuals were enrolled. Over a median follow-up period of 81 months, 1097 individuals passed away. The RCS analysis revealed a U-shaped link between the TyG-BMI index and all-cause and CVD mortality. The ROC curve indicated that the TyG-BMI index has a stronger diagnostic effect than the TyG index. Subgroup analysis results demonstrated that the TyG-BMI index was more significantly correlated with all-cause and CVD mortality rates in elderly patients. In the American population, a U-shaped association was discovered between the baseline TyG-BMI index and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality rates in CKD patients. The thresholds for all-cause and CVD mortality were found to be 299.31 and 294.85, respectively.

Abstract Background Both body mass index (BMI) and genetic factors independently contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, it is unclear whether genetic risk modifies the association between BMI and the risk of incident CVD. This study aimed to investigate whether BMI categories and genetic risk jointly and interactively contribute to incident CVD events, including hypertension (HTN), atrial fibrillation (AF), coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and heart failure (HF). Recently, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), due to their superior performance, have been vastly applied in electronic, auto, and other industries, resulting in the generation of an increasing amount of spent LIBs. What's worse, LIBs contained potentially toxic substances, including heavy metals, toxic and flammable electrolyte containing LiBF4, LiClO4, and LiPF6. Conventional disposal of spent LIBs via landfill or incineration exerts tremendous pressure on the environment. It was necessary to adopt efficient, low-cost, and environmentally friendly approaches to valorizing spent LIBs, which could not only alleviate the shortage of rare resources by recycling valuable elements such as Cu, Li, Mn, Ni, Co, and Al, but also eliminate the pollution of harmful components in batteries and realize the recycling and sustainable industry related to consumer electronics and electric vehicles (EVs). Given this, this paper summarized the recycling technologies of spent LIBs, including pyrometallurgy (melting reduction and roasting methods) and hydrometallurgy (leaching, precipitation, extraction, ion-exchange, electrochemical, sol-gel methods), and electrolyte recycling (organic solvent extraction and supercritical extraction methods). Pyrometallurgy technologies had relatively decent metal recovery rates but were associated with high energy consumption and atmospheric emission issues. Hydrometallurgical technologies were more environmentally friendly and efficient in recovering spent LIBs, although disposing of the wastewater generated from the process remained a challenge. In addition, the different industrial processes and various countries’ related policies of recycling spent LIBs were investigated. In the end, the outlooks and future directions of recycling spent LIBs were proposed.

3-Hydroxypropionic Acid (3-HP) is recognized as a high value-added chemical with a broad range of applications. Among the various biosynthetic pathways for 3-HP production, the β-alanine pathway is particularly noteworthy due to its capacity to generate 3-HP from glucose at a high theoretical titer. In this study, the β-alanine biosynthesis pathway was introduced and optimized in Corynebacterium glutamicum. By strategically regulating the supply of precursors, we successfully engineered a strain capable of efficiently synthesizing 3-HP through the β-alanine pathway, utilizing glucose as the substrate. The engineered strain CgP36 produced 47.54 g/L 3-HP at a yield of 0.295 g/g glucose during the fed-batch fermentation in a 5 L fermenter, thereby attaining the highest 3-HP titer obtained from glucose via the β-alanine pathway.

With the rapid development of nuclear energy, uranium as the main element of nuclear energy production, its source has been widely explored. At present, uranium resources mainly come from uranium mining, and a lot of radioactive uranium containing wastewater is produced in the process of uranium mining. Until now, the treatment technology of uranium mine wastewater is still in the research and development stage in China, which leads to the storage of a large amount of uranium mine wastewater and the discharge of nuclear waste liquid, which poses a threat to human health and the environment due to the comprehensive effect of chemical toxicity and radiation toxicity. On the other hand, other metal cations in uranium wastewater, such as Ca2+ and Mg2+, compete with U(Ⅵ) for active sites, making it difficult for most treatment methods to effectively recover uranium resources from uranium wastewater. Therefore, how to effectively treat radioactive uranium mine wastewater is full of challenges. Photocatalysis is a kind of green environmental protection technology with natural selectivity to non-variable valence ions, which can precipitate the soluble U(Ⅵ) in wastewater. The photocatalysis technology is expected to overcome the competition between metal cations and uranium for active sites, and realize the efficient extraction of U(Ⅵ) in uranium mine wastewater. In this study, ZIF-8-derived Zinc@iron oxide(D-ZnO@FexOy) heterostructures were prepared by impregnation of metal salt solution and high-temperature pyrolysis using ZIF-8 as a precursor for photoassisted reduction of U(Ⅵ) in uranium ore wastewater. The electron transport mode of D-ZnO@FexOy in S-scheme heterojunction is deduced by calculating the work function and band structure. Under photoexcitation, the direction of electron flow changes, the useless electrons and holes recombine at the interface, and the electrons and holes with strong redox ability are retained and participate in the photocatalytic reaction. Compared with D-ZnO and FexOy, this kind of spatially separated photogenerated electrons and holes have stronger redox ability and longer electron lifetime. Meanwhile, the internal electric field formed at the heterojunction interface can effectively enhance the directional electron migration, providing a strong power for promoting the photoassisted reduction of uranium. Therefore, compared with iron oxide(FexOy) and ZIF-8-derived ZnO(D-ZnO), the S-type heterostructure D-ZnO@FexOy exhibits stronger photoassisted uranium reduction ability(>95%) in the presence of multiple competing ions, and the material has good anti-interference and stability. High U(Ⅵ) removal performance(above 86%) is maintained after 5 cycles. The mechanism study shows that hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical are the main active species of photocatalytic reduction of U(Ⅵ). U(Ⅵ) is deposited on the surface of the material in the form of (UO2)O2•2H2O crystals. This study provides a valuable way to explore the photocatalyst with high efficiency photoelectron separation to reduce U(Ⅵ).

Uranium, as the most important fuel for nuclear power operation, is crucial to ensure the sustainable development of nuclear power. However, the supply-demand contradiction of uranium resources in China has become increasingly prominent, and the gap needs to be filled by overseas development and international market procurement. The photoreduction and electroreduction of uranium under complex conditions are mainly targeted at uranium containing radioactive wastewater, real seawater, and other systems. Uranium containing radioactive wastewater comes from the processes of uranium mining, uranium enrichment, uranium conversion, and manufacture of nuclear fuel elements, with the characteristics of complex interfering ions. Although the total amount of uranium in seawater is very large, the concentration of uranium in seawater is low, making the extraction of uranium from seawater extremely challenging. On the one hand, the reserves of uranium in seawater are nearly a thousand times higher than those on land; on the other hand, the entire application process of the nuclear industry produces a large amount of uranium containing radioactive wastewater. If efficient separation of uranium from seawater and uranium containing radioactive wastewater can be achieved, it can promote the secondary supply of uranium resources and alleviate the supply-demand contradiction of uranium resources in China. Therefore, the development of uranium recovery and extraction technology from seawater and uranium containing radioactive wastewater is important for the sustainable development of the nuclear industry. This paper reviews the recent research progress in separating uranium in complex environments such as seawater and uranium containing radioactive wastewater. In terms of uranium speciation analysis, it describes the coordination environment of complex environmental uranyl and summarizes the advantages of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in the fields of uranium extraction from uranium containing radioactive wastewater and seawater. In terms of designing photocatalysts, strategies such as element doping, metal loading, defect engineering, and introducing heterojunctions have been summarized for the preparation of photocatalytic semiconductor materials. The modification of functional groups on heterojunctions to regulate their energy band structure had introduced, which improved the overall performance of the material. The integration of selective adsorption and catalytic reduction, electrochemical methods can reduce soluble uranyl ions to neutral and insoluble products for separation, with advantages such as fast kinetics, wide extraction concentration range, and large separation capacity. However, there are also many key technical challenges in the practical application process, such as the competition between multiple cations and uranyl ions in complex systems, and the problem of excessive energy consumption caused by the competing reaction of water splitting during the cathodic uranium extraction process. In terms of electrocatalysis, various aspects such as electrode carrier selection, electrochemical device design, defect engineering, surface engineering, interface engineering, and microbial electrochemistry have been summarized to design electrocatalytic materials. In terms of key technical bottlenecks, combining photocatalysis and electrocatalysis technology with challenges in complex scenarios such as uranium speciation analysis, material functionalization design, intermediate reaction species analysis, uranium extraction mechanism analysis, cost control, and real-world application outcomes, relevant research have focused on challenges such as efficient photocatalytic reduction of uranium under natural light, identification of intermediate uranium species, uranium extraction from uranium containing radioactive wastewater, and seawater extraction from real ocean environments.

Abstract Background Leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B4 (LILRB4) plays a significant role in regulating immune responses. LILRB4 in microglia might influence the infiltration of peripheral T cells. However, whether and how LILRB4 expression aggravates brain damage after acute ischemic stroke remains unclear. This study investigates the role of LILRB4 in modulating the immune response and its potential protective effects against ischemic brain injury in mice. Methods and results Microglia-specific LILRB4 conditional knockout (LILRB4-KO) and overexpression transgenic (LILRB4-TG) mice were constructed by a Cre-loxP system. Then, they were used to investigate the role of LILRB4 after ischemic stroke using a transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) mouse model. Spatial transcriptomics analysis revealed increased LILRB4 expression in the ischemic hemisphere. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) identified microglia-cluster3, an ischemia-associated microglia subcluster with elevated LILRB4 expression in the ischemic brain. Flow cytometry and immunofluorescence staining showed increased CD8+ T cell infiltration into the brain in LILRB4-KO-tMCAO mice. Behavioral tests, cortical perfusion maps, and infarct size measurements indicated that LILRB4-KO-tMCAO mice had more severe functional deficits and larger infarct sizes compared to Control-tMCAO and LILRB4-TG-tMCAO mice. T cell migration assays demonstrated that LILRB4-KD microglia promoted CD8+ T cell recruitment and activation in vitro, which was mitigated by CCL2 inhibition and recombinant arginase-1 addition. The scRNA-seq and spatial transcriptomics identified CCL2 was predominantly secreted from activated microglia/macrophage and increased CCL2 expression in LILRB4-KD microglia, suggesting a chemokine-mediated mechanism of LILRB4. Conclusion LILRB4 in microglia plays a crucial role in modulating the post-stroke immune response by regulating CD8+ T cell infiltration and activation. Knockout of LILRB4 exacerbates ischemic brain injury by promoting CD8+ T cell recruitment. Overexpression of LILRB4, conversely, offers neuroprotection. These findings highlight the therapeutic potential of targeting LILRB4 and its downstream pathways to mitigate immune-mediated damage in ischemic stroke.

Abstract Background Phytosulfokine (PSK) functions as a plant peptide growth factor that plays important and diverse roles in plant development and stress responses. Nevertheless, PSKs have not been systematically analyzed in wheat. Results A genome-wide comparative analysis of PSK genes in wheat was conducted and 15 TaPSKs were identified and divided into four subgroups in the wheat genome based on sequence similarity. The examination of motif compositions of TaPSK genes revealed the presence of the YIYTQ signature motif in the C-terminus of all TaPSK polypeptide precursors, with a highly conserved feature across different species. Exogenous application of TaPSK peptide promoted root growth in wheat. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis revealed that the TaPSKs exhibited preferential or tissue-specific expression patterns in wheat. In particular, three homologs of the TaPSK1 genes were specifically expressed in grains, with the strongest expression observed in the developing grains at 15 days after anthesis. Compared with wild type, transgenic rice lines overexpressing TaPSK1-A exhibited larger grain size and higher thousand-grain weight. The promoter region and genomic sequence of the wheat TaPSK1-A gene were cloned. Sequence polymorphism showed that five single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified in the promoter region of TaPSK1-A. A Kompetitive Allele-Specific PCR (KASP) marker was developed for TaPSK1-A based on –806 bp SNP (C/T transition), and two haplotypes, TaPSK1-A-HapI and TaPSK1-A-HapII were detected in 260 wheat accessions collected from different regions. The expression of TaPSK1-A, promoter activity, and thousand-grain weight (TGW) in the TaPSK1-A-HapII haplotype were higher than those in the TaPSK1-A-HapI haplotype. Furthermore, yeast one-hybrid assays revealed the binding of TaNF-YB1 and TaERF39 to the promoter regions of the TaPSK1-A gene, and TaMADS29 could bind to the promoters of TaPSK1-B and TaPSK1-D genes. Conclusions Comparative genome-wide analysis of TaPSK peptide family revealed that the TaPSK1 gene is involved in wheat grain development, and the developed TaPSK1-A-KASP marker could be utilized for marker-assisted selection breeding of wheat. Abstract Observational studies have suggested the potential benefits of several medications for Parkinson’s disease (PD) and their potential for repurposing. However, the conclusions drawn from these studies are not entirely consistent. To address this inconsistency, we used the two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) method to explore the putative causal relationships between 23 medications and the risk and progression of PD. We applied inverse-variance weighted meta-analysis (IVW) to combine MR estimates. Additionally, sensitivity analyses were conducted to evaluate the robustness of the results. Our genetic evidence suggests that thyroid preparations and calcium channel blockers reduce the risk of PD, and salicylic acid and derivatives slow the progression of PD motor symptoms. Additionally, genetic evidence also suggests that four medications were associated with PD risk or progression, but the sensitivity analysis revealed that three of the medications may have interference caused by reverse causality. Our findings suggest that there are weak causal relationships between several medications and the risk or progression of PD. Though further replication studies are needed to verify these findings, these new insights may help in understanding the etiology of the disease, generate new clues related to drug discovery, and quantify the risk of future drug intake.

Nowadays, talc-type and other refractory molybdenum ores have gradually become the focus of research. The separation of talc and molybdenite is a difficult point in the separation of talc-type molybdenum ores. The two has similar surface structures and natural floatability, and the separation is very difficult. This article summarizes the current research progress of talc-type molybdenum ore beneficiation technology and reagents, and proposes to strengthen the research and development of selective grinding of talc-type molybdenum ores and organic macromolecular reagents, and deepen the mechanism and effect of reagents and mineral surfaces. The study of the raw ore technological mineralogy is an important direction for sorting the talc-type molybdenum ore in the future.

Abstract Large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, have demonstrated impressive capabilities in various tasks and attracted increasing interest as a natural language interface across many domains. Recently, large vision-language models (VLMs) that learn rich vision–language correlation from image–text pairs, like BLIP-2 and GPT-4, have been intensively investigated. However, despite these developments, the application of LLMs and VLMs in image quality assessment (IQA), particularly in medical imaging, remains unexplored. This is valuable for objective performance evaluation and potential supplement or even replacement of radiologists’ opinions. To this end, this study introduces IQAGPT, an innovative computed tomography (CT) IQA system that integrates image-quality captioning VLM with ChatGPT to generate quality scores and textual reports. First, a CT-IQA dataset comprising 1,000 CT slices with diverse quality levels is professionally annotated and compiled for training and evaluation. To better leverage the capabilities of LLMs, the annotated quality scores are converted into semantically rich text descriptions using a prompt template. Second, the image-quality captioning VLM is fine-tuned on the CT-IQA dataset to generate quality descriptions. The captioning model fuses image and text features through cross-modal attention. Third, based on the quality descriptions, users verbally request ChatGPT to rate image-quality scores or produce radiological quality reports. Results demonstrate the feasibility of assessing image quality using LLMs. The proposed IQAGPT outperformed GPT-4 and CLIP-IQA, as well as multitask classification and regression models that solely rely on images.

Abstract Klotho, an anti-aging protein, is believed to participate in metabolic diseases and play a potential protective role by regulating insulin sensitivity. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index (a simple marker of insulin resistance) and serum soluble Klotho (S-Klotho) levels. The cross-sectional study comprised 5237 adults aged 40–79 years who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2007–2016. The TyG index was calculated as ln [fasting triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL)/2]. The serum levels of S-Klotho were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The association between the TyG index and S-Klotho levels was investigated by multiple linear regression models, smoothed curve fitting, segmented linear regression models, subgroup analyses, and interaction tests. The TyG index was inversely associated with serum S-Klotho level after full adjustment (β = − 45.11, 95% CI (− 79.53, − 10.69), P = 0.011). Furthermore, we also found a non-linear correlation and saturation phenomenon between the TyG index and serum S-Klotho levels, with a turning point of 9.56. Abstract Previous studies in small samples have identified inconsistent cortical abnormalities in major depressive disorder (MDD). Despite genetic influences on MDD and the brain, it is unclear how genetic risk for MDD is translated into spatially patterned cortical vulnerability. Here, we initially examined voxel-wise differences in cortical function and structure using the largest multi-modal MRI data from 1660 MDD patients and 1341 controls. Combined with the Allen Human Brain Atlas, we then adopted transcription-neuroimaging spatial correlation and the newly developed ensemble-based gene category enrichment analysis to identify gene categories with expression related to cortical changes in MDD. Results showed that patients had relatively circumscribed impairments in local functional properties and broadly distributed disruptions in global functional connectivity, consistently characterized by hyper-function in associative areas and hypo-function in primary regions. Moreover, the local functional alterations were correlated with genes enriched for biological functions related to MDD in general (e.g., endoplasmic reticulum stress, mitogen-activated protein kinase, histone acetylation, and DNA methylation); and the global functional connectivity changes were associated with not only MDD-general, but also brain-relevant genes (e.g., neuron, synapse, axon, glial cell, and neurotransmitters). Our findings may provide important insights into the transcriptomic signatures of regional cortical vulnerability to MDD.

To investigate the effects of patellar denervation (PD) and non‐patellar denervation (NPD) after primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) without patellar resurfacing, this study conducted systematic electronic searches in November 2023 using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus, adhering to Cochrane Collaboration recommendations. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. Additionally, a manual search was performed to identify potentially eligible studies from the reference lists of review articles. Two researchers independently conducted literature reviews, data extraction, and risk of bias assessments. The outcome analysis encompassed the incidence of anterior knee pain (AKP), visual analogue scale (VAS), range of motion (ROM), American Knee Society Score (KSS), Oxford Knee Score (OKS), patellar score (PS), complications, and reoperations. Meta‐analysis was executed using RevMan 5.3 software. To enhance the credibility of the study, TSA v0.9 software was utilized to perform power analysis on the overall efficacy of primary and secondary outcomes. Twelve studies involving 1745 patients (1587 knees) were included, with 852 undergoing PD and 893 undergoing NPD. Results indicated a superior reduction in AKP incidence in the PD group compared to the NPD group. Statistically significant differences were observed between PD and NPD in KSS, OKS, and PS. However, the upper limit of the 95% confidence interval for each outcome fell below the minimal clinically important difference (MCID). No significant differences were found in VAS and ROM between PD and NPD. Additionally, PD was not associated with an increased incidence of complications or reoperations. Within 12 months and beyond, PD was proven to be a beneficial intervention in reducing AKP following TKA without patellar resurfacing, achieved without an increase in complications or reoperations. Regarding KSS, OKS, and PS, the minimal advantage achievable through PD may not be clinically significant.

Abstract The purpose of present study was to examine the current prevalence and recent trends of overactive bladder (OAB) among US adult men and examine the correlations between OAB and several potential risk factors. The study used the nationally representative data between 2005 and 2020 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in the US. A total of 18,386 participants aged ≥ 20 years were included in the study. We divided the data into three groups: 2005–2008, 2009–2014 and 2015–2020 to investigate the trends in OAB prevalence. The weighted prevalence and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) of OAB were calculated. The differences (95% CI) in prevalence between the surveys were calculated and multivariate-adjusted weighted logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the correlates of OAB. Among all US adult men, the overall prevalence of OAB increased slightly from 11.3% in 2005–2008 to 11.7% in 2009–2014 and significantly increased to 14.5% in 2015–2020 (difference, 3.2% [95% CI (1.9–4.4%)]; P

Abstract The aim of this study was to develop a three-dimensional (3D) cell model in order to evaluate the effectiveness of a traditional Chinese medicine decoction in the treatment of arthritis. Chondrocytes (ATDC5) and osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1) were 3D printed separately using methacryloyl gelatin (GelMA) hydrogel bioinks to mimic the natural 3D cell environment. Both cell types showed good biocompatibility in GelMA. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was added to the cell models to create inflammation models, which resulted in increased expression of inflammatory factors IL-1β, TNF-α, iNOS, and IL-6, and decreased expression of cell functional genes such as Collagen II (COLII), transcription factor SOX-9 (Sox9), Aggrecan, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), RUNX family transcription factor 2 (Runx2), Collagen I (COLI), Osteopontin (OPN), and bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2). The created inflammation model was then used to evaluate the effectiveness of Dangguiniantongtang (DGNT) decoctions. The results showed that DGNT reduced the expression of inflammatory factors and increased the expression of functional genes in the cell model. In summary, this study established a 3D cell model to assess the effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) decoctions, characterized the gene expression profile of the inflammatory state model, and provided a practical reference for future research on TCM efficacy evaluation for arthritis treatment.

Abstract Background As an innovative lipid parameter, NHHR (the ratio of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) can serve as a valuable tool for assessing cardiovascular disease risk. Nevertheless, the relationship between NHHR and the risk of kidney stones remains unexplored. Methods A cross-sectional survey utilized data from the National Health and Population Survey (NHANES) database in the United States spanning from 2007 to 2018. Distinct statistical analyses were applied, including weighted logistic regression, stratified and interaction analysis and restricted cubic spline curve (RCS) models, to examine the correlation between NHHR and the incidence of kidney stones. Abstract Introduction Most patients undergoing the Nuss procedure reported moderate to severe pain after surgery. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided serratus anterior plane block (SAPB) combined with transversus thoracic muscle plane (TTMP) block for relieving acute pain in patients undergoing the Nuss procedure. Methods The enrolled patients in our study were allocated to either receive combined nerve blocks with ropivacaine (NB group) or saline (CON group). The primary outcome of this study was postoperative pain at 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, 36, and 48 h during rest and movement (coughing). Secondary outcomes included intraoperative dosage of remifentanil, the time to extubation and the length of stay in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), the total acetaminophen and codeine tablet consumption, time to first bowel movement, time to first flatus, opioid-related adverse events, and the length of hospital stay. Results Patients in the NB group had significantly lower Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) pain scores compared with the CON group. The NB group required significantly less postoperative acetaminophen consumption and lower dosages of perioperative sufentanyl and remifentanil compared with the CON group. The length of stay in the PACU and time to extubation were significantly increased in the CON group compared with the NE group. Time to first bowel movement and time to first flatus were earlier in the NB group. But there were no significant differences between the groups in terms of the length of hospital stay and codeine tablet consumption. Conclusion Ultrasound-guided SAPB and TTMP blocks in patients undergoing the Nuss procedure could provide effective analgesia. The Qingkou landslide in Wulong, Chongqing, has developed on an inclined thick abrupt cliff, with a large area of goaf formed due to hundreds of years of coal mining below. Based on the analysis of the geological conditions, current goaf situation, and deformation characteristics of the mountain, it is identified that the landslide exhibits both bending-tension and sideslip deformations, suggesting a bending-sideslip failure mode. The deformation history of the mountain is examined, and the deformation characteristics of the landslide are analyzed in two stages: bending deformation and sideslipping deformation. Change in the rock surface occurrence are studied accordingly. Considering the combination relationship between bedding and the free face, the mountain failure is divided into bending-tension failure, wedge failure and plane-sliding failure. Criteria for each failure stage are established, revealing the evolution rules and formation mechanism of the bending-sideslip landslide. This study provides a scientific basis for the disaster prevention and mitigation of such landslides.

Abstract Background Human parasitic infections caused by Adenophorean nematodes encompass a range of diseases, including dioctophymiasis, trichuriasis, capillariasis, trichinellosis, and myositis. These infection can result in adverse impacts on human health and cause societal and economic concerns in tropical and subtropical regions. Methods This review conducted searches in PubMed, Embase and Google Scholar for relevant studies that published in established databases up to April 26, 2024. Studies that focused on the common morphology, life cycle, disease distribution, clinical manifestations, and prevention and control strategies for Adenophorean parasitic diseases in humans were included. Results Adenophorean nematodes exhibit shared morphological characteristics with a four-layered cuticle; uninucleate epidermal cells; pseudocoelom with six or more coelomocytes; generally three caudal glands; five esophageal glands; two testes in males with median-ventral supplementary glands in a single row; tail in males rarely possessing caudal alae; amphids always postlabial; presence of cephalic sensory organs; absence of phasmids; and a secretory-excretory system consisting of a single ventral gland cell, usually with a non-cuticularized terminal duct. Humans play two important roles in the life cycle of the nematode class, Adenophorea: 1) as a definitive host infected by ingesting undercooked paratenic hosts, embryonated eggs, infective larvae in fish tissue and meat contaminated with encysted or non-encysted larvae, and 2) as an accidental host infected by ingesting parasitic eggs in undercooked meat. Many organs are targeted by the Adenophorean nematode in humans such as the intestines, lungs, liver, kidneys, lymphatic circulation and blood vessels, resulting in gastrointestinal problems, excessive immunological responses, cell disruption, and even death. Most of these infections have significant incidence rates in the developing countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America; however, some parasitic diseases have restricted dissemination in outbreaks. To prevent these diseases, interventions together with education, sanitation, hygiene and animal control measures have been introduced in order to reduce and control parasite populations. Conclusions The common morphology, life cycle, global epidemiology and pathology of human Adenophorean nematode-borne parasitic diseases were highlighted, as well as their prevention and control. The findings of this review will contribute to improvement of monitoring and predicting human-parasitic infections, understanding the relationship between animals, humans and parasites, and preventing and controlling parasitic diseases. Abstract Background Obesity is an important risk factor for kidney stones(KS). Chinese Visceral Adiposity Index (CVAI), as a specific indicator for visceral obesity in the Chinese population, can more accurately assess the visceral fat content in Chinese individuals compared to Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI). However, the association between CVAI and risk for KS has not been studied. Methods A total of 97,645 participants from a health screening cohort underwent ultrasound examinations for the diagnosis of kidney stones, along with measurements of their CVAI. Logistic regressions were utilized to determine the relationship between different quartiles of CVAI and the incidence of kidney stones. Simultaneously, subgroup analysis and the computation of dose-response curves were employed to pinpoint susceptible populations. Results Among the participants, 2,888 individuals (3.0%) were diagnosed with kidney stones. The mean CVAI values ± standard deviation for the four groups were: Q1 (18.42 ± 19.64), Q2 (65.24 ± 10.39), Q3 (98.20 ± 9.11), and Q4 (140.40 ± 21.73). In the fully adjusted multivariable model, CVAI was positively correlated with urolithiasis (OR = 1.001; 95% CI = 1.000, 1.002). Compared with the first quartile of CVAI, the population in the fourth quartile of CVAI had a higher prevalence of kidney stones (OR = 1.231; 95% CI = 1.066, 1.415). Through subgroup analysis, a positive correlation between CVAI and the risk of kidney stones was found in non-smokers (OR = 1.001, 95%CI:1.000, 1.002), non-drinkers (OR = 1.001, 95%CI:1.000, 1.002), non-hypertensive subgroups (OR = 1.003, 95%CI:1.002, 1.003), and non-diabetes subgroups (OR = 1.001, 95%CI:1.000, 1.002). Conclusion The findings suggest that CVAI could be a reliable and effective biomarker for assessing the potential risk of kidney stone prevalence, with significant implications for the primary prevention of kidney stones and public health.

Abstract Background Kawasaki disease (KD) is an immune vasculitis of unknown origin, characterized by transient inflammation. The activation of the cGAS-STING pathway, triggered by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) release, has been implicated in the onset of KD. However, its specific role in the progression of inflammation during KD's acute phase remains unclear. Methods We measured mtDNA and 2’3’-cGAMP expression in KD patient serum using RT-qPCR and ELISA. A murine model of KD was induced by injecting Lactobacillus casei cell wall extract (LCWE), after which cGAS-STING pathway activation and inflammatory markers were assessed via immunohistochemistry, western blot, and RT-qPCR. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were treated with KD serum and modulators of the cGAS-STING pathway for comparative analysis. Mitochondrial function was evaluated using Mitosox staining, mPTP opening was quantified by fluorescence microscopy, and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) was determined with JC-1 staining. Results KD patient serum exhibited increased mtDNA and 2’3’-cGAMP expression, with elevated levels of pathway-related proteins and inflammatory markers observed in both in vivo and in vitro models. TEM confirmed mitochondrial damage, and further studies demonstrated that inhibition of mPTP opening reduced mtDNA release, abrogated cGAS-STING pathway activation, and mitigated inflammation. Conclusion These findings indicate that mtDNA released through the mPTP is a critical activator of the cGAS-STING pathway, contributing significantly to KD-associated inflammation. Targeting mtDNA release or the cGAS-STING pathway may offer novel therapeutic approaches for KD management.

Abstract Background Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is closely associated with the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and its related indicators, particularly its combination with obesity indices. However, there is limited research on the relationship between changes in TyG-related indices and CVD, as most studies have focused on baseline TyG-related indices. Methods The data for this prospective cohort study were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The exposures were changes in TyG-related indices and cumulative TyG-related indices from 2012 to 2015. The K-means algorithm was used to classify changes in each TyG-related index into four classes (Class 1 to Class 4). Multivariate logistic regressions were used to evaluate the associations between the changes in TyG-related indices and the incidence of CVD. Results In total, 3243 participants were included in this study, of whom 1761 (54.4%) were female, with a mean age of 57.62 years at baseline. Over a 5-year follow-up, 637 (19.6%) participants developed CVD. Fully adjusted logistic regression analyses revealed significant positive associations between changes in TyG-related indices, cumulative TyG-related indices and the incidence of CVD. Among these changes in TyG-related indices, changes in TyG-waist circumference (WC) showed the strongest association with incident CVD. Compared to the participants in Class 1 of changes in TyG-WC, the odds ratio (OR) for participants in Class 2 was 1.41 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.08–1.84), the OR for participants in Class 3 was 1.54 (95% CI 1.15–2.07), and the OR for participants in Class 4 was 1.94 (95% CI 1.34–2.80). Moreover, cumulative TyG-WC exhibited the strongest association with incident CVD among cumulative TyG-related indices. Compared to the participants in Quartile 1 of cumulative TyG-WC, the OR for participants in Quartile 2 was 1.33 (95% CI 1.00–1.76), the OR for participants in Quartile 3 was 1.46 (95% CI 1.09–1.96), and the OR for participants in Quartile 4 was 1.79 (95% CI 1.30–2.47). Conclusions Changes in TyG-related indices are independently associated with the risk of CVD. Changes in TyG-WC are expected to become more effective indicators for identifying individuals at a heightened risk of CVD.

Abstract Background Mind wandering is a common phenomenon in daily life. However, the manifestations and cognitive correlates of mind wandering in different subclinical populations remain unclear. In this study, these aspects were examined in individuals with schizotypal traits and individuals with depressive symptoms, i.e., subclinical populations of patients with schizophrenia and depression. Methods Forty-two individuals with schizotypal traits, 42 individuals with subclinical depression, and 42 controls were recruited to complete a mind wandering thought sampling task (state level) and a mind wandering questionnaire (trait level). Measures of rumination and cognitive functions (attention, inhibition, and working memory) were also completed by participants. Results Both subclinical groups exhibited more state and trait mind wandering than did the control group. Furthermore, individuals with schizotypal traits demonstrated more trait mind wandering than individuals with subclinical depression. Rumination, sustained attention, and working memory were associated with mind wandering. In addition, mind wandering in individuals with subclinical depression can be accounted for by rumination or attention, while mind wandering in individuals with high schizotypal traits cannot be accounted for by rumination, attention, or working memory. Conclusions The results suggest that individuals with high schizotypal traits and subclinical depression have different patterns of mind wandering and mechanisms. These findings have implications for understanding the unique profile of mind wandering in subclinical individuals.

Abstract Non-self recognition is a fundamental aspect of life, serving as a crucial mechanism for mitigating proliferation of molecular parasites within fungal populations. However, studies investigating the potential interference of plants with fungal non-self recognition mechanisms are limited. Here, we demonstrate a pronounced increase in the efficiency of horizontal mycovirus transmission between vegetatively incompatible Sclerotinia sclerotiorum strains in planta as compared to in vitro. This increased efficiency is associated with elevated proline concentration in plants following S. sclerotiorum infection. This surge in proline levels attenuates the non-self recognition reaction among fungi by inhibition of cell death, thereby facilitating mycovirus transmission. Furthermore, our field experiments reveal that the combined deployment of hypovirulent S. sclerotiorum strains harboring hypovirulence-associated mycoviruses (HAVs) together with exogenous proline confers substantial protection to oilseed rape plants against virulent S. sclerotiorum. This unprecedented discovery illuminates a novel pathway by which plants can counteract S. sclerotiorum infection, leveraging the weakening of fungal non-self recognition and promotion of HAVs spread. These promising insights provide an avenue to explore for developing innovative biological control strategies aimed at mitigating fungal diseases in plants by enhancing the efficacy of horizontal HAV transmission.

Abstract Background Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a common childhood health complaint, whose etiology is multifactorial. The incidence of DDH is variable and higher in Tibet plateau. Here, we collected plasma samples and studied the metabolomics signatures of DDH. Methods Fifty babies were enrolled: 25 with DDH and 25 age-matched non-DDH healthy controls (HC group). We collected plasma samples, laboratory parameters and conducted untargeted metabolomics profiling. Results There are many differential metabolites among patients with DDH, including 4-β-hydroxymethyl-4-α-methyl-5-α-cholest-7-en-3-beta-ol, β-cryptoxanthin, α-tocopherol, taurocholic acid, glycocholic acid, 2-(3,4-dihydroxybenzoyloxy)-4,6-dihydroxybenzoate, arabinosylhypoxanthine, leucyl-hydroxyproline, hypoxanthine. The main differential metabolic pathways focused on primary bile acid biosynthesis, arginine and proline metabolism, phenylalanine metabolism, histidine metabolism, purine metabolism. Conclusions To our knowledge, this is the first report of metabolomics profile in babies with DHH. By combining the α-tocopherol and taurocholic acid, we could achieve the differential diagnosis of DDH.

Agricultural greenhouse production has to require a stable and acceptable environment, it is therefore essential for future greenhouse production to obtain full and precisely internal dynamic environment parameters. Dynamic modeling based on machine learning methods, e.g., intelligent time series prediction modeling, is a popular and suitable way to solve the above issue. In this article, a systematic literature review on applying advanced time series models has been systematically conducted via a detailed analysis and evaluation of 61 pieces selected from 221 articles. The historical process of time series model application from the use of data and information strategies was first discussed. Subsequently, the accuracy and generalization of the model from the selection of model parameters and time steps, providing a new perspective for model development in this field, were compared and analyzed. Finally, the systematic review results demonstrate that, compared with traditional models, deep neural networks could increase data structure mining capabilities and overall information simulation capabilities through innovative and effective structures, thereby it could also broaden the selection range of environmental parameters for agricultural facilities and achieve environmental prediction end-to-end optimization via intelligent time series model based on deep neural networks.

Heme, an iron-containing porphyrin derivative, holds great promise in fields like medicine, food production and chemicals. Here, we developed an engineered Corynebacterium glutamicum strain for efficient heme production by combining modular engineering and RBS engineering. The whole heme biosynthetic pathway was methodically divided into 5-ALA synthetic module, uroporphyrinogen III (UPG III) synthetic module and heme synthetic module for further construction and optimization. Three heme synthetic modules were compared and the siroheme-dependent (SHD) pathway was identified to be optimal in C. glutamicum for the first time. To further improve heme production, the expression of genes in UPG III synthetic module and heme synthetic module was coordinated optimized through RBS engineering, respectively. Subsequently, heme oxygenase was knocked out to reduce heme degradation. The engineered strain HS12 showed a maximum iron-containing porphyrin derivatives titer of 1592 mg/L with the extracellular secretion rate of 45.5% in fed-batch fermentation. Our study constructed a C. glutamicum chassis strain for efficient heme accumulation, which was beneficial for the advancement of efficient heme and other porphyrins production.

The location of offshore and coastal marine engineering projects often shows considerable overlap with the foraging and breeding grounds of marine mammals. Lingding Bay, located in the Chinese Pearl River Delta, is home to the world’s largest known population of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis). The bay is also the site of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge mega-engineering project. This study assessed the responses of the dolphins to the bridge construction. Data were collected on dolphin sightings by survey vessels following standard line-transect tracks, with surveys conducted during the pre-construction (2005–2006), construction (2015–2016), and post-construction (2020–2021) phases. The dolphin distribution patterns, density, group sizes, and presence of calves were compared across these three periods. Additionally, the range patterns of the dolphins were analyzed following the identification of individuals during the post-construction phase. The average distance at which humpback dolphins were sighted from the bridge was significantly shorter after the completion of the bridge than during the pre-construction and construction phases. Furthermore, the density of humpback dolphins in the southern region of the bay—where the bridge is located—was significantly higher post-construction compared with that recorded during the pre-construction and construction phases. A noticeable increase in dolphin group sizes post-construction may indicate a shift in foraging strategy. The post-construction phase coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown period, and the resultant reduced human activity in Lingding Bay may have influenced the distribution of dolphins and other animals to some extent. Individual identification results demonstrated that the waters near the bridge remained an integral habitat for the dolphins post-construction, as they freely traversed underneath the bridge. The results of this study hold considerable importance within the realm of marine engineering, offering valuable guidance and references for informed decision-making and operational practices in associated domains.

In recent years, the role of gut microbiota (GM) in bladder cancer has attracted significant attention. Research indicates that GM not only contributes to bladder carcinogenesis but also influences the efficacy of adjuvant therapies for bladder cancer. Despite this, interventions targeting GM have not been widely employed in the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer, mainly due to the incomplete understanding of the complex interactions between the host and gut flora. Simultaneously, aberrantly expressed non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have been frequently associated with bladder cancer, playing crucial roles in processes such as cell proliferation, invasion, and drug resistance. It is widely known that the regulation of GM-mediated host pathophysiological processes is partly regulated through epigenetic pathways. At the same time, ncRNAs are increasingly regarded as GM signaling molecules involved in GM-mediated epigenetic regulation. Accordingly, this review analyzes the ncRNAs that are closely related to the GM in the context of bladder cancer occurrence and treatment, and summarizes the role of their interaction with the GM in bladder cancer-related phenotypes. The aim is to delineate a regulatory network between GM and ncRNAs and provide a new perspective for the study and prevention of bladder cancer.

As global climate change intensifies, understanding the response mechanisms and adaptive capacities of ecosystems to climate change has become a core focus in environmental science. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), a region highly sensitive to global climate change, shows vegetation phenological shifts that reflect the ecosystem’s response to climate fluctuations. However, how phenological metrics extracted from different vegetation indices affect our understanding of these shifts in the region remains unclear. This study analyzes the start (SOS) and end (EOS) of the growing season on the QTP from 1982 to 2015 using GIMMS NDVI3g data. These metrics were compared with phenological data derived from GIMMS LAI3g and MODIS EVI2 data. The results indicate that phenological metrics derived from different vegetation indices (NDVI, LAI, and EVI2) are generally consistent in their spatiotemporal distribution and show significant correlations. However, regional differences and temporal inconsistencies were observed. This comparative analysis reveals the strengths and limitations of various vegetation indices in phenological metric extraction. The results offer crucial insights for enhancing the precision of phenological modeling and highlight the significance of choosing suitable vegetation indices in future studies on phenology.

Ankle cartilage injuries are a common sports-related condition that significantly impairs patients’ daily activities and imposes substantial economic burdens on both families and society. Effective cartilage repair strategies are crucial to addressing this pathological condition. Current conservative treatments include muscle strengthening, use of ankle braces, physical therapy, and the administration of NSAIDs. In cases of severe injury, surgical interventions such as osteophyte resection and cartilage transplantation may be necessary. However, the inherent regenerative capacity of articular cartilage is limited, and conventional treatments are insufficient to promote cartilage regeneration and repair. Consequently, innovative therapies such as stem cell therapy, exosome therapy, and cartilage regeneration scaffolds are prioritized for future development. In recent years, significant progress has been made in ankle cartilage repair. While bibliometric studies on cartilage repair exist, specific analyses focused on ankle cartilage repair are lacking. This study aims to address this gap by conducting a bibliometric analysis of 131 articles published over the past two decades, highlighting development trajectories, research hotspots, and evolutionary trends through knowledge mapping. Our findings indicate growing global interest, with the United States leading in international collaboration, funding, publication output, and citation frequency. Foot & Ankle International emerges as the leading journal for publication and dissemination in this field, with Kerkhoffs GMMJ identified as the most influential author. Notable hotspot keywords include “osteochondral lesions” and “platelet-rich plasma.” By highlighting critical research hotspots and collaboration patterns, this study not only enriches the existing literature on ankle cartilage repair but also serves as a foundational resource for clinicians and researchers aiming to develop innovative strategies for improving patient outcomes. Furthermore, our findings underscore the necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing the understanding and treatment of ankle cartilage injuries. Ultimately, the visual characterization of these trends provides valuable insights into the field’s evolutionary trajectory, offering guidelines for future research directions and encouraging further exploration of this promising area.
