The fossil record spanning the latest Ediacaran and earliest Cambrian is characterized by the proliferation of small, mineralized organisms that comprise the well-known and abundant deposits of small shelly fauna. Many of these fossils are tubular or conical forms with simple morphologies, and thus present difficulties in both taxonomic and phylogenetic interpretation. This study investigates a community of poorly preserved shelly tubicolous organisms in two fossiliferous slabs from the Soltanieh Formation, northern Iran. Analysis of the taphonomy of this fossil assemblage using thin-section petrography, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, suggests a two-part preservational pathway involving phosphatic replacement of the shell wall and separate, diagenetically later infillings of void space with either phosphatic or calcium carbonate cements. In parallel with the taphonomic study and given the difficulty in assigning the observed fossils taxonomically, morphometrics of the shelly organisms were also explored. Biometric measurements were collected from high-resolution photomosaic images of the slab-surface fossils, as well as from a three-dimensional volume of the interior of one of the slabs generated via X-ray tomographic microscopy. Statistical analysis of these measurements revealed a separation of the fossils into two morphologically distinct groups of conical and tubular forms, which we characterize respectively as ‘conomorphs' and ‘tubomorphs'. Based on previous studies of fossils from the Soltanieh Fm., we can offer tentative generic-level assignment to Anabarites and Cambrotubulus to at least some of the fossils present, though these are dependent on views in thin section rather than morphometric distinction. Cumulatively, we provide a conservative, taxonomy-free approach for detailing the morphology and preservation of poorly preserved fossils from the Ediacaran–Cambrian transition.

Laboratory-based decay experiments have become commonly used to supplement our understanding of how organisms enter the fossil record. Differences in how these experiments are designed and evaluated, however, including dissimilarities in qualitative decay-scoring indices superimposed on variability in model organisms, renders any semblance of comparison between studies unreliable. Here, we introduce the utility of X-ray tomographic microscopy (μCT) as a means for reliable and repeatable analysis of soft-tissue decay experiment products. As proof-of-concept, we used a relatively simple experimental design with classic studies as comparators, and present our analytical protocol using μCT for capturing the entire volume of the decay subject. Segmentation software then allows for 3D volume analysis and high-resolution internal and external character identification. We describe the workflow from sample preparation, contrast-staining, and data collection to processing and analysis of the resulting data, using peppermint shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni) as model organisms, and compare our results to previous taphonomic studies. These methods allow for improved visualization and quantification of decay and internal volume analysis with minimal handling as compared to traditional qualitative scoring methods. Using the same scoring criteria as previous studies, this study revealed similar decay results for certain features, while we were additionally able to detect other feature loss or alteration earlier—importantly without need for potentially distortive sample handling. We conclude that μCT is a more effective, straightforward, and exact means for extracting quantitative data on the progression of decay and should be adopted in future studies, where available, to streamline and standardize comparisons.

High SiMo cast iron components in automotive exhaust systems are exposed to high-temperature oxidation over time. Quantitative analysis of formed oxide scale is therefore important for the assessment of a component durability. The brittle nature of multilayered scale and thermal stress limits capture of a true topology using traditional 2D destructive cut and polish methods. In this study, nondestructive high spatial-resolution 3D µCT analysis was performed on 2.90-mm-diameter oxidized specimens which permitted direct observation with 3.5 µm pixel resolution. The specimens were oxidized in three sequential time steps for a total 100 h at 700 °C and 800 °C in air and combustion gas atmospheres. A MATLAB-coded algorithm was used to quantify the topology, thickness variation in internal and external scale layers, and scale/metal interface unevenness. Scale topology was linked to oxidation temperature and gas atmosphere. A water vapor environment increases scale/metal interface unevenness and scale layer thickness irregularity which were related to an accelerated oxidation rate.

The fossil record of the terminal Ediacaran Period is typified by the iconic index fossil Cloudina and its relatives. These tube-dwellers are presumed to be primitive metazoans, but resolving their phylogenetic identity has remained a point of contention. The root of the problem is a lack of diagnostic features; that is, phylogenetic interpretations have largely centered on the only available source of information—their external tubes. Here, using tomographic analyses of fossils from the Wood Canyon Formation (Nevada, USA), we report evidence of recognizable soft tissues within their external tubes. Although alternative interpretations are plausible, these internal cylindrical structures may be most appropriately interpreted as digestive tracts, which would be, to date, the earliest-known occurrence of such features in the fossil record. If this interpretation is correct, their nature as one-way through-guts not only provides evidence for establishing these fossils as definitive bilaterians but also has implications for the long-debated phylogenetic position of the broader cloudinomorphs., Cloudinomorphs were one of the few groups to survive from the Ediacaran into the Cambrian, but they are known only from their external tubes. Here, Schiffbauer et al. report soft-tissue preservation of cloudinomorphs; the internal structures are interpreted as guts characteristic of bilaterians.

Taphonomic processes, especially post-mortem biological decomposition, act as crucial controls on the microbial fossil record. Information loss during the fossilization process obscures interpretation of ancient microbial ecology and limits our view of preserved ecosystems. Conversely, taphonomic information can itself provide insight into fossilization pathways and processes. This information-gain approach requires specific attention to taphonomic patterns in ancient assemblages and robust modern analogue data to serve as points of reference. In this study, we combine experimental taphonomy with decomposition models in order to constrain taphonomic hypotheses regarding Proterozoic microfossil assemblages. Several filamentous and coccoidal prokaryotic and eukaryotic phototrophs were evaluated for taphonomic pattern over the course of a short (~100 days) decomposition experiment. In parallel, simple numerical models were constructed to explain potential taphonomic pathways. These analogue data were then compared to two Mesoproterozoic fossil assemblages, the ~1.5 Ga Kotuikan Formation, Siberia, and the ~1 Ga Angmaat Formation, Canada. Concordant with previous experiments and observations, our results suggest that sheath morphology is more persistent than cell/trichome morphology during early stages of decomposition. These experiments also suggest that taphonomic change in cell morphology may follow one of several trajectories, resulting in distinct taphonomic endpoints. Model output suggests two categories of underlying mechanism and resultant taphonomic trajectory: (1) uniform decomposition, resulting in a low overall taphonomic grade and poor preservation, and (2) faster decomposition of structurally compromised individuals, producing a final population with better overall preservation of very few individuals. In this experiment, cells of coccoidal organisms exhibit the first pattern and trichomes of filamentous organisms and some sheaths exhibit the second. Comparison with preserved microfossil assemblages suggests that differences in taphonomic pattern between parts of an assemblage could be useful in assessing taphonomic processes or degree of taphonomic loss in an entire assemblage.

The quality of spheroidal graphite cast iron (SGI) castings is directly related to the morphology of graphite nodules. Therefore, accurate and comprehensive quantitative evaluation of microstructure is critical for industrial practices. The most influential morphological characteristics of the graphite phase in SGI can be divided into three categories: (1) shape and size of individual graphite nodules, (2) total volume of graphite phase and nodule number, and (3) spatial distribution. During the last decades, SGI structure analysis has progressed from visual observation of polished cross section and quantitative 2D techniques (metallography and automated SEM/EDX) to observation of the real 3D structure using micro-computed tomography (µCT) scanning. In this article, 2D and 3D morphological characteristics of graphite nodules were determined by µCT scanning and compared. 3D µCT provides accurate characterization of the real shape factor and diameter of graphite nodules. It was shown that large and small graphite nodules in inoculated SGI have the different modes of space distribution which could be linked to casting solidification.

Some of the most varied colors in the natural world are created by iridescent nanostructures in bird feathers, formed by layers of melanin-containing melanosomes. The morphology of melanosomes in iridescent feathers is known to vary, but the extent of this diversity, and when it evolved, is unknown. We use scanning electron microscopy to quantify the diversity of melanosome morphology in iridescent feathers from 97 extant bird species, covering 11 orders. In addition, we assess melanosome morphology in two Eocene birds, which are the stem lineages of groups that respectively exhibit hollow and flat melanosomes today. We find that iridescent feathers contain the most varied melanosome morphologies of all types of bird coloration sampled to date. Using our extended dataset, we predict iridescence in an early Eocene trogon (cf. Primotrogon) but not in the early Eocene swift Scaniacypselus, and neither exhibit the derived melanosome morphologies seen in their modern relatives. Our findings confirm that iridescence is a labile trait that has evolved convergently in several lineages extending down to paravian theropods. The dataset provides a framework to detect iridescence with more confidence in fossil taxa based on melanosome morphology.

The ecosystem at Pigeon Creek in San Salvador, the Bahamas, provides a unique opportunity for the analysis of complex modern biological processes and how they operate within spatial and chemical gradients in order to assess the stratigraphic scale of the incipient fossil record. This study considers the influence of environmental factors upon molluscan diversity, body size, and predator-prey interactions in order to assess the role that gradients may play at a single horizon. Samples were collected from 26 different localities within a carbonate intertidal creek, Pigeon Creek. Molluscan samples were identified to species level, measured for specimen length and width, presence of a drill hole, and drill diameter, and ordinated using canonical correspondence analyses (CCA). The CCA ordination determined salinity to be the strongest influence of environmental gradients measured for both gastropod and bivalve distributions. Our results show that both molluscan diversity and median body size decrease as salinity concentrations move from marine to elevated salinity conditions. Predatory drilling frequency is not significantly influenced by salinity; however, there is a strong correspondence between predator and prey body size at marine to intermediate salinities, a relationship which dissipates at elevated salinities. This study reinforces the idea that small scale local environmental gradients can strongly influence biotic communities and that spatial and environmental variation must be considered in order to properly interpret temporal trends in the fossil record, even at sub-parasequence scales.

Evidence of predatory activity can be observed in the fossil record in the form of drill holes, repair scars, bite marks, and recognizable skeletal fragments in coprolites and preserved gut tracts. It is less common, however, to find fossil snapshots of predators caught in the act of feeding on their prey. Such interactions are preserved in recurring associations of the ichnogenera Rusophycus and Cruziana, most commonly attributed to trilobites, with burrows of likely vermiform (worm-like) organisms. In this study, we examine the Cambrian (Furongian Epoch, Steptoean Stage) Davis Formation, near Leadwood, southeastern Missouri, USA. In the lower to middle Davis Fm., several silty shale beds are extensively burrowed, from which we report a new occurrence and large number of Rusophycus traces associated with burrows of vermiform organisms. Within these beds, Rusophycus traces intersect vermiform burrows more often than expected by random chance and display a positive correlation in size between paired tracemakers. The median diameter of Rusophycus-associated vermiform burrows is significantly smaller than that of the non-intersected burrows. These results suggest that the paired traces record size selective predatory behavior. Moreover, low angle predator–prey trace intersections, though few in number, occurred more frequently than expected by random chance, supporting previous hypotheses that low angle attacks are preferred as they may improve prey handling success rates.

Formation of low density graphite phase during solidification increases the volume of semi-solid cast iron with spheroidal graphite (SGI) and resulted pressure could help eliminate shrinkage micro-porosity in casting. Therefore, micro-porosity in casting can be linked to 3D graphite nodule structure. Two experimental SGI's with different levels of shrinkage micro-porosity in castings were intentionally produced by variation in inoculation parameters which influenced graphite nodule structure. 3D-morphological characteristics of graphite nodules and micro-porosity level were determined by μCT scanning. The obtained statistical data was discussed with respect to graphite nodule solidification mode and casting soundness. The capabilities of μCT scanning in predicting micro-shrinkage in SGI casting were compared to the other traditionally used techniques.
