The cold response of the digital arteries in a cohort of vibration-exposed workers was related to measures of daily vibration exposure expressed in terms of r.m.s. acceleration magnitude normalised to an 8-hour day, and frequency was weighted according to either the frequency weighting Wh defined in ISO 5349-1:2001 (Ah(8) in ms-2 r.m.s) or the hand--arm vascular frequency weighting Wp proposed in the ISO Technical Report 18570:2017 (Ap(8) in ms-2 r.m.s.). The metric Ap(8), which assigns more weight to intermediate- and high-frequency vibrations (31.5-250 Hz), performed better for the prediction of cold-induced digital arterial hyperresponsiveness in the vibration-exposed workers than the measure Ah(8) derived from the conventional ISO frequency weighting, which gives more importance to lower-frequency vibrations (≤16 Hz). Cyclists are exposed to hand--arm vibration (HAV) for prolonged periods of time during training sessions and competitions. The vibration can reduce perceived comfort, thus limiting the ability of the cyclist to control the bike in endurance sessions. The study of HAV in cyclists in a controlled environment allows for comparisons between the effects of different postures, materials and technical solutions on perceived discomfort and on the vibration transmitted to specific body segments. This paper describes the experimental setup, the measurement chain and the data processing for the evaluation of bike comfort in the laboratory. The setup is based on single-axis or multiaxial shakers; the time history of the input vibration can be derived from on-field measurements for comparative analyses or can be selected from among classical stimuli for frequency response function evaluation (sine sweep or white noise). Comfort can be quantified via questionnaires; objective measurements can be derived from vibrations measured at different body locations using wearable accelerometers or laser doppler vibrometers. Abstract This paper describes a system for the measurement of the internal and external temperature profiles of PET preforms used in the Injection Stretch Blow Moulding (ISBM) process. Many works in literature highlighted the importance of these quantities to improve the production quality of PET bottles, but none addressed the development of a measuring system suitable for this scope. A measuring system based on two thermopiles for the identification of the internal temperature profile and a thermal camera for the measurement of the external one has been designed. The adopted sensors were individually calibrated and the uncertainty budget, accounting for both instrumental uncertainties and the effect of multiple reflections, was derived. A prototype of the measuring system was tested on an industrial ISBM machine. The dependence of the preforms temperature profile on the settings of the ISBM machine was investigated. Results evidenced that the minimum variations of the machine settings induced temperature differences significantly larger than the measurement uncertainty, thus proving the effectiveness of the proposed system. This paper describes a method for the uncertainty-based combination of signal processing techniques for the identification of rotor imbalance. The main idea of the proposed method is to compute the imbalance with different algorithms and to average the different algorithms’ results. The method is based on the data fusion at feature level and uses the measurement uncertainty of the imbalance as a figure of merit for the weight computation. A static, a dynamic, and a hybrid implementation are presented. In the static one, the weights are computed in a dedicated training phase, in which four algorithms (Fourier transform and quasi-harmonic fitting of signal denoised with Hilbert-Huang Transform, Hilbert Vibration decomposition, and Wavelet Packet decomposition) have been used to estimate the known imbalance of car wheels. In the dynamic one, the weights are computed at runtime by estimating the difference between each predictor and the actual signal. The hybrid approach is the combination of the two algorithms. Results of simulations and experiments evidenced the validity of the data fusion, with uncertainty reductions between 10 and 40%, with larger benefits in presence of non-stationary disturbances. This paper describes a system for the measurement of the apparent mass (AM) matrix of standing subjects. The system uses two electrodynamic shakers to generate vibrations along two mutually perpendicular axes (vertical and horizontal) and allows the identification of the full AM matrix with two tests, in which the standing subject is exposed to vertical excitation combined in turn with fore-and-aft and lateral vibration. A 3-D force platform measures the forces and the torques transmitted from the vibrating platform to the feet. The force platform, set up with piezoelectric load cells, has been designed in order to obtain a measurement bandwidth of 20 Hz. The supports of different load cells are meant to minimize bending moments on the sensors and to minimize the axes crosstalk. The force platform has been calibrated with a least-squares approach, using reference masses and a dynamometric hammer. The AM uncertainty, evaluated through the experiments’ repeatability and reproducibility, is lower than 3.4% along the three axes (confidence level 68%). This paper describes a method for the comparison of the cooling capability of over-the-counter devices for skin tags removal. The comparison is performed by measuring the heat flux produced by the gas identified assessing the temperature difference across an element with a known thermal resistance; the temperature reached at the interface between the device and the heat-flux meter is also analyzed, although it is different from that of the skin during the treatment. The measurement accuracy has been experimentally evaluated and, with a confidence interval of 95%, is better than 6% for heat-flux measurements and lower than 0.3 °C for temperature measurements. The instrument allowed comparing the thermal efficiency of 19 dimethyl ether and propane devices of different types (dispenser, spray, and foam). Results are by far more reliable than those obtained with tests performed on subjects, where the intrinsic skin thermal properties variability prevents from assessing differences smaller than 30%. Models of hand--arm systems (HAS) are purely mechanical. These models do not include the biological active behaviour of the system, even though it has been known since 1997 that there is a tonic vibration reflex. Since then, several authors have investigated this reflex and related it to grip force, posture and some others features of mechanical vibration power absorption. Other scholars proposed models of HAS that do not include the tonic vibration reflex and its consequences. These models, even partial models, are nonetheless effective in describing many aspects of vibration exposure. Abstract: This paper describes a method for the automatic identification of acoustic events using a weighted average of sound pressure and sound intensity measured at the vicinity of airports. The classification is based on the combination of different parameters using a technique conceptually similar to the sensor fusion: the indications of different classifiers are merged using the classification uncertainty as a figure of merit. The method uses the results of a training phase for the observation of statistical distributions of sound pressure and sound intensity related parameters. The different parameters’ weights are computed analyzing the overlap of probability distributions of takeoffs and landings, so that more relevance is given to the quantities presenting a low risk of misclassification. The proposed method does not require any arbitrary assumption about the parameter effectiveness, given that the indications of multiple (potentially infinite) classifiers can be merged together with weights that minimize the chance of misclassification. The method has been validated with measurements performed at the Milan Malpensa airport (Italy). The skin–contact thermal resistance is a parameter that allows evaluating, in steady condition, the heat flow at the interface between the skin and a rigid surface at a known temperature. At the current state of the art, it is evaluated with empirical equations and is known to be dependent on the contact pressure, on the surface characteristics, and on the skin conductivity. The need to measure skin and contact thermal resistance with low uncertainty led to the realization of the device described in this paper. The instrument—based on the principle of the thermoflowmeter—has been designed with the goal of minimizing the measurement uncertainty with contact temperatures ranging between 12 ^\circ\C and 27 ^\circ\C and contact areas from 50 to 314 \mm^2. The device allows varying and controlling the interface pressure and temperature that, according to existing literature studies, are likely to influence the skin thermal properties. The different temperatures needed for the evaluation of the thermal resistance are measured with individually calibrated thermocouples. The metrological characterization of the flowmeter was performed under vacuum, and the effect of convective heat exchanges in normal operation was modeled and compensated. Measurement repeatability and reproducibility were assessed by measuring the thermal resistance of plastic materials in operational conditions. Preliminary tests showed that the skin–contact thermal resistances measured in different conditions are compatible with the theoretically evaluated ones, with improvement in uncertainty due to direct measurement. Abstract: This paper evaluates the advantages and the drawbacks deriving from the use of MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) accelerometers for hand-arm and whole-body vibration measurements. Metrological performances of different transducers were assessed through the identification of their frequency response function, linearity, floor noise and sensitivity to thermal and electromagnetic disturbances. Experimental results highlighted a standard instrumental uncertainty (including the nonlinearity) lower than 5% with the single frequency calibration procedure, such a value was reduced to 2%. The temperature effect was negligible and the electromagnetic disturbances sensitivity was comparable to that of the piezoelectric accelerometers. The compatibility of measurements obtained with MEMS accelerometers with those of piezoelectric-based measurement chains was verified for two specific applications. An example of direct transducer fixation on the skin for vibration transmissibility measurements is also presented. Thanks to the MEMS peculiarities – mainly small sizes and low cost – since novel approaches in the vibration monitoring could be pursued. For instance, it is possible to include by design MEMS accelerometers in any hand-held tool at the operator interface, or inside the seats structures of cars, tractors and trucks. This paper describes a local active noise control system that virtually increases the sound isolation of a dividing wall by means of a secondary source array. With the proposed method, sound pressure on the source side of the partition is reduced using an array of loudspeakers that generates destructive interference on the wall surface, where an array of error microphones is placed. The reduction of sound pressure on the incident side of the wall is expected to decrease the sound radiated into the contiguous room. The method efficiency was experimentally verified by checking the insertion loss of the active noise control system; in order to investigate the possibility of using a large number of actuators, a decentralized FXLMS control algorithm was used. Active control performances and stability were tested with different array configurations, loudspeaker directivities and enclosure characteristics (sound source position and absorption coefficient). The influence of all these parameters was investigated with the factorial design of experiments. The main outcome of the experimental campaign was that the insertion loss produced by the secondary source array, in the 50–300Hz frequency range, was close to 10dB. In addition, the analysis of variance showed that the active noise control performance can be optimized with a proper choice of the directional characteristics of the secondary source and the distance between loudspeakers and error microphones. This paper investigates, by means of a numerical model, the possibility of using an active noise barrier to virtually reduce the acoustic transparency of a partition wall inside an enclosure. The room is modeled with the image method as a rectangular enclosure with a stationary point source; the active barrier is set up by an array of loudspeakers and error microphones and is meant to minimize the squared sound pressure on a wall with the use of a decentralized control. Simulations investigate the effects of the enclosure characteristics and of the barrier geometric parameters on the sound pressure attenuation on the controlled partition, on the whole enclosure potential energy and on the diagonal control stability. Performances are analyzed in a frequency range of 25–300Hz at discrete 25Hz steps. Influencing parameters and their effects on the system performances are identified with a statistical inference procedure. Simulation results have shown that it is possible to averagely reduce the sound pressure on the controlled partition. In the investigated configuration, the surface attenuation and the diagonal control stability are mainly driven by the distance between the loudspeakers and the error microphones and by the loudspeakers directivity; minor effects are due to the distance between the error microphones and the wall, by the wall reflectivity and by the active barrier grid meshing. Room dimensions and source position have negligible effects. A promising but still scarcely explored strategy for the estimation of gait parameters based on inertial sensors involves the adoption of machine learning techniques. However, existing approaches are reliable only for specific conditions, inertial measurements unit (IMU) placement on the body, protocols, or when combined with additional devices. In this paper, we tested an alternative gait-events estimation approach which is fully data-driven and does not rely on a priori models or assumptions. High-frequency (512 Hz) data from a commercial inertial unit were recorded during 500 steps performed by 40 healthy participants. Sensors' readings were synchronized with a reference ground reaction force system to determine initial/terminal contacts. Then, we extracted a set of features from windowed data labeled according to the reference. Two gray-box approaches were evaluated: (1) classifiers (decision trees) returning the presence of a gait event in each time window and (2) a classifier discriminating between stance and swing phases. Both outputs were submitted to a deterministic algorithm correcting spurious clusters of predictions. The stance vs. swing approach estimated the stride time duration with an average error lower than 20 ms and confidence bounds between ±50 ms. Purpose: Alpine ski racing is a complex sport where no single factor can exclusively account for performance. We assessed body composition, using bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA), and our purpose was to study its influence on the strength and power profile of young alpine skiers. Methods: Anthropometric measurements and advanced BIVA parameters were recorded on eighteen alpine ski racers (6 females/12 males; 17.0 ± 1.3 years; 172.2 ± 9.3 cm; 68.5 ± 9.8 kg). Dynamic force and power were assessed using countermovement jumps (CMJ), while maximal isometric strength was evaluated for hip flexion-extension and abduction-adduction movements. Stepwise regression models examined the relationship between BIVA-derived parameters and strength/power variables. Results: Body cellular mass (BCM) positively related to jump height (p = .021, R2 = 74%), jump momentum (p < .001, R2 = 89%), reactive strength index modified (p = .026, R2 = 75%) and peak concentric power (p < .001, R2 = 82%), while intracellular water (ICW) related to peak eccentric (p < .001, R2 = 76%) and concentric force (p < .001, R2 = 77%) as well as to concentric rate of force development together with the phase angle (PhA) (p = .008, R2 = 79% and R2 = 0.015). Regarding isometric assessment, ICW was a significant predictor for all four movement directions, and PhA contributed to hip adduction strength. During the secondary production of aluminum, upon melting the scrap in a furnace, there is the possibility of developing an aluminothermic reaction, which produces oxides in the molten metal bath. Aluminum oxides must be identified and removed from the bath, as they modify the chemical composition and reduce the purity of the product. Furthermore, accurate measurement of molten aluminum level in a casting furnace is crucial to obtain an optimal liquid metal flow rate which influences the final product quality and process efficiency. This paper proposes methods for the identification of aluminothermic reactions and molten aluminum levels in aluminum furnaces. An RGB Camera was used to acquire video from the furnace interior, and computer vision algorithms were developed to identify the aluminothermic reaction and melt level. The algorithms were developed to process the image frames of video acquired from the furnace. Results showed that the proposed system allowed the online identification of the aluminothermic reaction and the molten aluminum level present inside the furnace at a computation time of 0.7 s and 0.4 s per frame, respectively. Workers can be exposed daily to foot-transmitted vibration (FTV) from standing on mobile equipment or vibrating platforms and surfaces. This results in a consistent risk of developing neurological, vascular, and musculoskeletal problems. To date, there are no international standards describing procedures with which to evaluate the health risks deriving from long-term exposure to FTV. To study the applicability of hand--arm vibration (HAV) standards to the foot, the biomechanical responses of the hand and foot in terms of the frequency response function upon varying contact conditions were compared. Results evidenced similarities between the responses of the wrist and ankle, with differences in resonance for the fingers and toes. Quality inspection in the industrial production field is experiencing a strong technological development that benefits from the combination of vision-based techniques with artificial intelligence algorithms. This paper initially addresses the problem of defect identification for circularly symmetric mechanical components, characterized by the presence of periodic elements. In the specific case of knurled washers, we compare the performances of a standard algorithm for the analysis of grey-scale image with a Deep Learning (DL) approach. The standard algorithm is based on the extraction of pseudo-signals derived from the conversion of the grey scale image of concentric annuli. In the DL approach, the component inspection is shifted from the entire sample to specific areas repeated along the object profile where the defect may occur. The standard algorithm provides better results in terms of accuracy and computational time with respect to the DL approach. Nevertheless, DL reaches accuracy higher than 99% when performance is evaluated targeting the identification of damaged teeth. This work focuses on the thermo-mechanical design of the microbalance used for the VISTA (Volatile In Situ Thermogravimetry Analyzer) sensor. VISTA has been designed to operate in situ in different space environments (asteroids, Mars, icy satellites). In this paper we focus on its application on Mars, where the expected environmental conditions are the most challenging for the thermo-mechanical design. The microbalance holding system has been designed to ensure piezoelectric crystal integrity against the high vibration levels during launch and landing and to cope with the unavoidable thermo-elastic differential displacements due to CTE and temperature differences between the microbalance elements. The crystal holding system, based on three symmetrical titanium supports, provides also the electrical connections needed for crystal actuation, microbalance heating and temperature measurement on the electrode area. On the microbalance crystal surfaces the electrodes, a micro film heater (optimized to perform thermo-gravimetric analysis up to 400 °C) and a resistive thermometer are deposited through a vacuum sputtering process. A mockup of the system has been manufactured and tested at the expected vibration levels and the thermal control effectiveness has been verified in thermo-vacuum environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Patch near-field acoustic holography (NAH) coupled with an array of sound intensity probes allows separating the sound field incident on a surface from the one radiated by the surface itself. Although the measurement principle has been successfully used to separate the noise source contribution from disturbing sources and/or noise reflections, the method accuracy has not been investigated in the literature. We describe the results of experiments meant to evaluate the uncertainty in the identification of noise radiated by vibrating panels with different absorption characteristics in presence of an incident acoustic radiation using the statistically optimized near-field acoustic holography. Measurement errors were evaluated through tests performed in controlled acoustic conditions. Results evidenced that the measurement uncertainty depends on the accuracy of the microphone array positioning and on the incident sound field. This paper describes the experimental characterization of the thermal insulation proper-ties of a multilayer insulator (ML1) and of an aerogel. Materials characterization was performed to optimize the thermal control design of a small interferometer devoted to planetary observation. In order to simulate the Martian environment, tests were per-formed in a carbon dioxide atmosphere, with pressures between 10 and 104 Pa and temperatures from 193 to 353 K. MLI was tested at different levels of layers compression to investigate thermal insulation changes deriving from the constraining of the mechanical structure. The thermal conductivity was measured with a purposely designed guarded hot plate apparatus. Results showed that the aerogel exhibits a lower thermal conductivity for gas pressures larger than 100 Pa and that the layer compression of the MLI s does not affect the heat conduction for gas pressures above 10³ Pa. Nowadays, the use of wearable inertial-based systems together with machine learning methods opens new pathways to assess athletes' performance. In this paper, we developed a neural network-based approach for the estimation of the Ground Reaction Forces (GRFs) and the three-dimensional knee joint moments during the first landing phase of the Vertical Drop Jump. Data were simultaneously recorded from three commercial inertial units and an optoelectronic system during the execution of 112 jumps performed by 11 healthy participants. Data were processed and sorted to obtain a time-matched dataset, and a non-linear autoregressive with external input neural network was implemented in Matlab. The network was trained through a train-test split technique, and performance was evaluated in terms of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The network was able to estimate the time course of GRFs and joint moments with a mean RMSE of 0.02 N/kg and 0.04 N·m/kg, respectively. Despite the comparatively restricted data set and slight boundary errors, the results supported the use of the developed method to estimate joint kinetics, opening a new perspective for the development of an in-field analysis method. Plantar pressure measurements provide useful information to diagnose a diverse range of foot disorders; unfortunately, the commercially available measurement systems are undesirably sensitive to several disturbances, but this aspect is mostly neglected in the literature. This paper describes the results of an experimental campaign aiming at the identification of pressure measuring system metrological performances, at system modeling, and at the implementation of correction procedures. The sensor model was implemented using the results of static and dynamic tests performed on a pedar-X plantar pressure measurement system. The static calibration was performed by analyzing the effect of temperature, single sensor coverage area, local curvature, tangential forces, long-term stability (creep), and sensor crosstalk on the system performances. The dynamic calibration was performed on an electrodynamic shaker, identifying the single sensor frequency response function and the hysteresis under different average loads. The dynamic sensor model is based on the Kelvin–Voigt model, which is representative of the viscoelastic behavior of the material. The model allowed us to compensate both the creep (i.e., the behavior under static loads) and the nonunitary frequency response function. A deconvolution-based algorithm has been proposed to compensate the sensor crosstalk effects, although its implementation requires additional investigations. Experimental results of bobbing and gait tests showed that, with the adoption of the proposed compensation algorithms, the force and center of pressure errors could be reduced by more than 50\% of their initial values. Abstract: This paper describes a systematic approach for optimizing suspension systems to reduce the vibrations transmitted to workers by hand-held power tools. The optimization is based on modeling tool-operator interactions using a mobility scheme. The tool is modeled as a vibration generator, and its internal impedance is included. A hand–arm impedance matrix is used to model the operator upper limbs. The mobility model is used to identify the optimal suspension characteristics, which in our study were the set of parameters that minimizes the frequency-weighted acceleration at the hand–tool interface. Different handling conditions (one and two hands) and different working cycles with the same tools can be included in the optimization process. The constraints derived from the limitation on the increase in the tool mass and the static deflection of the mounting system under the working loads are also considered. The proposed method has been applied to the reduction of the vibrations transmitted to the operator by a small pneumatic hammer. The designed system reduced the worker’s exposure so that it is within the limits of the EU directive. This paper describes a method that allows accuracy and bandwidth enhancements in 3-D sound intensity measurements. Commercial 3-D probes are usually set up with three mutually perpendicular 1-D p-p probes and, thus, arranged with six microphones; although sound intensity can be calculated with 15 independent pairs of transducers, only the three "primary" pairs that are aligned with the coordinate system axes. The other 12 "secondary" pairs consist of mutually perpendicular microphones, which are placed at a distance that is √2 times shorter than the primary one. The main idea of the proposed method is to average the intensity that is measured on primary and secondary pairs. This leads to a larger bandwidth, thanks to the shorter separating distance between secondary pairs. The intrinsic p-p method high- frequency sensitivity loss is partially recovered, starting from the theoretical plane wave expression. Measurements of different axes are weighted with coefficients that are computed by optimizing the measurement uncertainty. Errors that are due to the metrological characteristics of the transducers and the effects of environmental conditions are compensated. Experimental results showed that a p-p probe arranged with half-inch microphones that are placed at a distance of 50 mm allows reliable measurements up to 2.5 kHz, whereas a commercial probe bandwidth with the same configuration is usually 1250 Hz. Very often in environmental and industrial acoustics, it is necessary to identify the contribution of single sources to global sound levels. Under this perspective, interests arise from the necessity of controlling noise or verifying whether a single source exceeds legal limits while there are other active sources around. Currently available methods are typically based on coherence or expert system techniques. Both approaches have relevant limitations, but for current purposes, coherence methods are usually more robust, particularly if carried out using vibration sensors in vibroacoustic interactions. Nevertheless, when a measurement system has to be based only on microphone measurements, those methods also have too little reliability and unsatisfying accuracy. In fact, it is quite impossible to eliminate in the input signals the effects of other sources, which usually also have some coherence with the output signal. In this paper, a relevant enhancement to coherence-based methods is described and discussed. The proposed approach leverages on the use of an acoustic intensity measurement approach instead of the sound pressure one. Background: Vertical whole-body vibration (vWBV) during work, recreation, and transportation can have detrimental effects on physical and mental health. Studies have shown that lateral vibration at low frequencies (<3 Hz) can result in changes to spatiotemporal gait parameters. There are few studies which explore spatiotemporal gait changes due to vertical vibration at higher frequencies (> 3 Hz). This study seeks to assess the effect of vWBV on spatiotemporal gait parameters at a greater range of frequencies (≤ 30 Hz).Methods: Stride Frequency (SF), Stride Length (SL), and Center of Pressure velocity (CoPv) was measured in seven male subjects (23 ± 4 years, 1.79 ± 0.05 m, 73.9 ± 9.7 kg) during In-Place Walking and nine male subjects (29 ± 7 years, 1.78 ± 0.07 m, 77.8 ± 9.9 kg; mean ± SD) during Treadmill Walking while exposed to vWBV. Load cells measured ground reaction forces during In-Place Walking and sensorized insoles acquired under-foot pressure during Treadmill Walking. Statistical tests included a one-way repeated-measures ANOVA, post-hoc two way paired T-tests, statistical power (1-β), correlation (R2), and effect size (Cohen's d).Results: While statistical significance was not found for changes in SF, SL, or Mean CoPv, small to large effects were found in all measured spatiotemporal parameters of both setups. During Treadmill Walking, vWBV was correlated with a decrease in SF (R2 = 0.925), an increase in SL (R2 = 0.908), and an increase in Mean CoPv (R2 = 0.921) and Max CoPv (R2 = 0.952) with a significant increase (p < 0.0083) in Max CoPv at frequencies of 8 Hz and higher.Significance: Study results demonstrated that vWBV influences spatiotemporal gait parameters at frequencies greater than previously studied. Objective: (i) to determine the outcomes of whole-body vibration training (WBVT) on obese individuals, and the intervention settings producing such effects; (ii) identify potential improper or harmful use of WBVT. Design: Systematic review. Data sources: Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, PEDro and Scielo until July 2018. Eligibility criteria: Full papers evaluating the effect of WBVT on body composition, cardiovascular status and functional performance in obese adults. Papers with PEDro score<4 were excluded. Study appraisal and synthesis: Risk of bias and quality of WBVT reporting were assessed with PEDro scale (randomized controlled trials) or TREND checklist (non-randomized studies) and a 14-items checklist, respectively. Weighted acceleration, daily exposure and Hedges’ adjusted g were computed. Results: We included 18 papers published 2010–2017. Typical interventions consisted in three sessions/week of exercises (squats, calf-raises) performed on platforms vibrating at 25–40 Hz (amplitude: 1–2 mm); according to ISO 2631–1:1997, daily exposure was “unsafe” in 7/18 studies. Interventions lasting ≥6 weeks improved cardiac autonomic function and reduced central/peripheral arterial stiffness in obese women; 10 weeks of WBVT produced significant weight/fat mass reduction, leg strength improvements as resistance training, and enhanced glucose regulation when added to hypocaloric diet. No paper evidenced losses of lean mass. Isolated cases of adverse effects were reported. Summary: To date, WBVT is a promising adjuvant intervention therapy for obese women; long-term studies involving larger cohorts and male participants are required to demonstrate the associated safety and health benefits. The therapeutic use of WBVT in the management of obese patients is still not standardised and should be supported by an extensive knowledge on the causality between vibration parameters and outcomes. Airborne dust monitoring is crucial to characterize Martian atmosphere’ thermal structure, balance and dynamics. In order to achieve this objective, the MicroMED instrument has been selected to join the Dust Suite payload within the ExoMars 2020 mission. The particle analyzer is mainly developed to characterize the dust on Mars but, the instrument is suitable to be mounted on different landers or rovers thanks to the limited mass and size. This work describes the design of two contactless thermometers based respectively on a total radiance and two-color pyrometry scheme, developed to measure the temperature of a small brass coated steel wire during wire drawing. In this critical condition, wire oscillation and relevant insertion errors do not allow using commercial contact or contactless sensors. Thus, ad hoc pyrometers optical layouts have been designed in order to minimize sensitivity to the wire oscillations and emissivity changes. Moreover, performances associated to different infrared detectors have been compared using as figure of merit the achieved measurement uncertainty simulating typical disturbances, i.e. the background temperature variation, the slope of the wire’s emissivity and the effect of the atmosphere transmittance. Finally, the uncertainty budgets were drawn, evidencing the limitations of the proposed methods and identifying the best configuration for both developed instruments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Whole-Body Vibration (WBV) is an occupational hazard affecting employees working with transportation, construction or heavy machinery. To minimize vibration-induced pathologies, ISO identified WBV exposure limits based on vibration transmissibility and apparent mass studies. The ISO guidelines do not account for variations in posture or movement. In our study, we measured the transmissibility and apparent mass at the mouth, lower back, and leg of participants during stationary and propelled walking. Stationary walking transmissibility was significantly higher at the lumbar spine and bite bar at 5 and 10 Hz compared to all higher frequencies while the distal tibia was lower at 5 Hz compared to 10 and 15 Hz. Propelled walking transmissibility was significantly higher at the bite bar and knee at 2 Hz than all higher frequencies. These results vary from previously published transmissibility values for static participants, showing that ISO standards should be adjusted for active workers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantifying the response of postural control in developmental athletes makes it possible to understand critical coordination and learning phases and to improve technical-physical interventions. However, the influence of maturation on postural control amongst young soccer players has neither been tested using quantitative methods, nor over a wide age range. In this study, we examined stabilometric parameters of 238 young male soccer players from 9 to 17 years old relative to maturity offset. Two 30-s tests (eyes open and eyes closed) were recorded on a baropodometric platform at 50 Hz. Participants were split into six groups according to their maturity offset, expressed as years from individual's peak height velocity. Dependent variables were: Sway Area, Center-of-Pressure velocity, standard deviation of the antero-posterior and medio-lateral Center-of-Pressure trajectory, Romberg Quotient. Sway Area was significantly higher in players with maturity offset <−1.5 than in groups with maturity offset > 0.5 years (p < 0.001, large effect). Center-of-Pressure velocity markedly dropped in players with maturity offset >−0.5 years (p < 0.001, very large effect). Antero-posterior standard deviation was higher before than after peak height velocity (p < 0.05, large effect) and significantly higher with closed eyes at some points. Medio-lateral standard deviation was higher in the youngest group of players (maturity offset <−2.5 years, large effect) than in those with maturity offset >−0.5 years. In sum, stabilometric parameters improved with age until zero maturity offset was achieved. Thereafter, variables describing postural control in developing soccer players were almost stable. Changes of directions and cutting maneuvers, including 180-degree turns, are common locomotor actions in team sports, implying high mechanical load. While the mechanics and neurophysiology of turns have been extensively studied in laboratory conditions, modern inertial measurement units allow us to monitor athletes directly on the field. In this study, we applied four supervised machine learning techniques (linear regression, support vector regression/machine, boosted decision trees and artificial neural networks) to predict turn direction, speed (before/after turn) and the related positive/negative mechanical work. Reference values were computed using an optical motion capture system. We collected data from 13 elite female soccer players performing a shuttle run test, wearing a six-axes inertial sensor at the pelvis level. A set of 18 features (predictors) were obtained from accelerometers, gyroscopes and barometer readings. Turn direction classification returned good results (accuracy > 98.4%) with all methods. Support vector regression and neural networks obtained the best performance in the estimation of positive/negative mechanical work (coefficient of determination R2 = 0.42–0.43, mean absolute error = 1.14–1.41 J) and running speed before/after the turns (R2 = 0.66–0.69, mean absolute error = 0.15–018 m/s). Although models can be extended to different angles, we showed that meaningful information on turn kinematics and energetics can be obtained from inertial units with a data-driven approach.
