Search

We report on the first measurement of $J/\psi$ photoproduction from nuclei in the photon energy range of $7$ to $10.8$ GeV, extending above and below the photoproduction threshold in the free proton of $\sim8.2$ GeV. The experiment used a tagged photon beam incident on deuterium, helium, and carbon, and the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab to measure the semi-inclusive $A(\gamma,e^+e^-p)$ reaction with a dilepton invariant mass $M(e^+e^-)\sim m_{J/\psi}=3.1$ GeV. The incoherent $J/\psi$ photoproduction cross sections in the measured nuclei are extracted as a function of the incident photon energy, momentum transfer, and proton reconstructed missing light-cone momentum fraction. Comparisons with theoretical predictions suggest an excess of the measured cross section for sub-threshold production and for interactions with high missing light-cone momentum fraction protons. The measured enhancement can be explained by modified gluon structure for high-virtuality bound-protons.

We suggest a novel scheme for generating multimode squeezed states for the boson sampling implementation. The idea is to replace a commonly used linear interferometer by a multimode resonator containing a passive optical element consisting of two-level atoms dispersively interacting with photons and self-generating a squeezed compound state of both bosons -- photons and atoms. The suggested scheme does not need (a) on-demand external sources of photons in squeezed or Fock quantum states and (b) numerous interchannel couplers which introduce phase noise and losses that prevent scaling up the system and achieving quantum advantage. The idea is illustrated by a setup based on a Bose-Einstein-condensed gas confined in a multimode resonator, one of whose optical modes is in the classical coherent regime. The joint probability distribution of photon and/or noncondensed atom numbers is calculated via a matrix hafnian that, for certain parameters of the system, is hardly to be effectively calculated by classical computers. Such experiments are at reach via existing cavity-QED and cold-gas technology.

The spin-exotic hybrid meson $\pi_{1}(1600)$ is predicted to have a large decay rate to the $\omega\pi\pi$ final state. Using 76.6~pb$^{-1}$ of data collected with the GlueX detector, we measure the cross sections for the reactions $\gamma p \to \omega \pi^+ \pi^- p$, $\gamma p \to \omega \pi^0 \pi^0 p$, and $\gamma p\to\omega\pi^-\pi^0\Delta^{++}$ in the range $E_\gamma =$ 8-10 GeV. Using isospin conservation, we set the first upper limits on the photoproduction cross sections of the $\pi^{0}_{1}(1600)$ and $\pi^{-}_{1}(1600)$. We combine these limits with lattice calculations of decay widths and find that photoproduction of $\eta'\pi$ is the most sensitive two-body system to search for the $\pi_1(1600)$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures plus supplemental materials

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT), an experimental and theoretical study of changes in the electronic structure (dispersion dependencies) and corresponding modification of the energy band gap at the Dirac point (DP) for topological insulator (TI) $\mathrm{Mn}_{1-x} \mathrm{Ge}_x \mathrm{Bi}_2 \mathrm{Te}_4$ have been carried out with gradual replacement of magnetic Mn atoms by non-magnetic Ge atoms when concentration of the latter was varied from 10$\%$ to 75$\%$. It was shown that when Ge concentration increases then the bulk band gap decreases and reaches zero plateau in the concentration range of 45$\%$-60$\%$ while non-topological surface states (TSS) are present and exhibit an energy splitting of 100 and 70 meV in different types of measurements. It was also shown that TSS disappear from the measured band dispersions at a Ge concentration of about 40$\%$. DFT calculations of $\mathrm{Mn}_{1-x} \mathrm{Ge}_x \mathrm{Bi}_2 \mathrm{Te}_4$ band structure were carried out to identify the nature of observed band dispersion features and to analyze a possibility of magnetic Weyl semimetal state formation in this system. These calculations were performed for both antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) ordering types while the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength was varied or a strain (compression or tension) along the $c$-axis was applied. Calculations show that two different series of topological phase transitions (TPTs) may be implemented in this system depending on the magnetic ordering. At AFM ordering transition between TI and trivial insulator phase goes through the Dirac semimetal state, whereas for FM phase such route admits three intermediate states instead of one (TI - Dirac semimetal - Weyl semimetal - Dirac semimetal - trivial insulator).

We measure the spin-density matrix elements (SDMEs) of the $\Delta^{++}(1232)$ in the photoproduction reaction $\gamma p \to \pi^-\Delta^{++}(1232)$ with the GlueX experiment in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. The measurement uses a linearly--polarized photon beam with energies from $8.2$ to $8.8$~GeV and the statistical precision of the SDMEs exceeds the previous measurement by three orders of magnitude for the momentum transfer squared region below $1.4$ GeV$^2$. The data are sensitive to the previously undetermined relative sign between couplings in existing Regge-exchange models. Linear combinations of the extracted SDMEs allow for a decomposition into natural and unnatural--exchange amplitudes. We find that the unnatural exchange plays an important role in the low momentum transfer region.

The mechanism of the peculiar transport properties around the magnetic ordering temperature of semiconducting antiferromagnetic EuCd$_2$P$_2$ is not yet understood. With a huge peak in the resistivity observed above the N\'eel temperature, $T_{\rm N}=10.6\,\rm K$, it exhibits a colossal magnetoresistance effect. Recent reports on observations of ferromagnetic contributions above $T_{\rm N}$ as well as metallic behavior below this temperature have motivated us to perform a comprehensive characterization of this material, including its resistivity, heat capacity, magnetic properties and electronic structure. Our transport measurements revealed quite different temperature dependence of resistivity with the maximum at $14\,\rm K$ instead of previously reported $18\,\rm K$. Low-field susceptibility data support the presence of static ferromagnetism above $T_{\rm N}$ and show a complex behavior of the material at small applied magnetic fields. Namely, signatures of reorientation of magnetic domains are observed up to $T=16\,\rm K$. Our magnetization measurements indicate a magnetocrystalline anisotropy which also leads to a preferred alignment of the magnetic clusters above $T_{\rm N}$. The momentum-resolved photoemission experiments at temperatures from $24\,\rm K$ down to $2.5\,\rm K$ indicate the permanent presence of a fundamental band gap without change of the electronic structure when going through $T_N$ that is in contradiction with previous results. We performed \textit{ab initio} band structure calculations which are in good agreement with the measured photoemission data when assuming an antiferromagnetic ground state. Calculations for the ferromagnetic phase show a much smaller bandgap, indicating the importance of possible ferromagnetic contributions for the explanation of the colossal magnetoresistance effect in the related EuZn$_2$P$_2$., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

The practical applications of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) require the deep understanding of the impact of electrical characteristics variability and geometrical irregularity of the metal-dielectric interface. Traditional methods in the theory of wave scattering at rough interfaces fail to treat simultaneously the interference (Anderson) localization of the SPP, which may arise due to its multiple back-scattering by random distortions of surface relief, and the leakage into the uniform dielectric half-space. In our previous works [Low Temp. Phys. \textbf{42}, 685 (2016); Ann.~Phys.~\textbf{455}, 169378 (2023)], by representing the perturbation of surface impedance as an effective potential in the Schr\"odinger-like equation, we suggested the way to describe the interplay between Anderson localization and the leakage of the SPP. In the present study we show that the problem of SPP scattering from finite geometrically rough region of the interface can be reduced to the problem of its scattering from the same region but with effective random impedance. We calculate the radiation pattern and demonstrate its pronounced anisotropy that arises due to the interplay between different geometrical parameters of the interface roughness.

For quantum electronics, the possibility to finely tune the properties of magnetic topological insulators (TIs) is a key issue. We studied solid solutions between two isostructural Z$_2$ TIs, magnetic MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and nonmagnetic GeBi$_2$Te$_4$, with Z$_2$ invariants of 1;000 and 1;001, respectively. For high-quality, large mixed crystals of Ge$_x$Mn$_{1-x}$Bi$_2$Te$_4$, we observed linear x-dependent magnetic properties, composition-independent pairwise exchange interactions along with an easy magnetization axis. The bulk band gap gradually decreases to zero for $x$ from 0 to 0.4, before reopening for $x>0.6$, evidencing topological phase transitions (TPTs) between topologically nontrivial phases and the semimetal state. The TPTs are driven purely by the variation of orbital contributions. By tracing the x-dependent $6p$ contribution to the states near the fundamental gap, the effective spin-orbit coupling variation is extracted. As $x$ varies, the maximum of this contribution switches from the valence to the conduction band, thereby driving two TPTs. The gapless state observed at $x=0.42$ closely resembles a Dirac semimetal above the Neel temperature and shows a magnetic gap below, which is clearly visible in raw photoemission data. The observed behavior of the Ge$_x$Mn$_{1-x}$Bi$_2$Te$_4$ system thereby demonstrates an ability to precisely control topological and magnetic properties of TIs.

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. The discovery of a square magnetic-skyrmion lattice in GdRu$_2$Si$_2$, with the smallest so far found skyrmion diameter and without a geometrically frustrated lattice, has attracted significant attention, particularly for potential applications in memory devices and quantum computing. In this work, we present a comprehensive study of surface and bulk electronic structures of GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ by utilizing momentum-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements and first-principles calculations. We show how the electronic structure evolves during the antiferromagnetic transition when a peculiar helical order of 4$f$ magnetic moments within the Gd layers sets in. A nice agreement of the ARPES-derived electronic structure with the calculated one has allowed us to characterize the features of the Fermi surface (FS), unveil the nested region along the $k_z$ at the corner of the 3D FS, and reveal their orbital compositions. Our findings suggest that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction plays a decisive role in stabilizing the spiral-like order of Gd 4$f$ moments responsible for the skyrmion physics in GdRu$_2$Si$_2$. The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab studies photoproduction of mesons using linearly polarized $8.5\,\text{GeV}$ photons impinging on a hydrogen target which is contained within a detector with near-complete coverage for charged and neutral particles. We present measurements of spin-density matrix elements for the photoproduction of the vector meson $\rho$(770). The statistical precision achieved exceeds that of previous experiments for polarized photoproduction in this energy range by orders of magnitude. We confirm a high degree of $s$-channel helicity conservation at small squared four-momentum transfer $t$ and are able to extract the $t$-dependence of natural and unnatural-parity exchange contributions to the production process in detail. We confirm the dominance of natural-parity exchange over the full $t$ range. We also find that helicity amplitudes in which the helicity of the incident photon and the photoproduced $\rho(770)$ differ by two units are negligible for $-t<0.5\,\text{GeV}^{2}/c^{2}$., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

We describe boson sampling of interacting atoms from the noncondensed fraction of Bose-Einstein-condensed (BEC) gas confined in a box trap as a new platform for studying computational #P-hardness and quantum supremacy of many-body systems. We calculate the characteristic function and statistics of atom numbers via newly found hafnian master theorem. Using Bloch-Messiah reduction, we find that interatomic interactions give rise to two equally important entities - eigen-squeeze modes and eigen-energy quasiparticles - whose interplay with sampling atom states determines behavior of the BEC gas. We infer that two necessary ingredients of #P-hardness, squeezing and interference, are self-generated in the gas and, contrary to Gaussian boson sampling in linear interferometers, external sources of squeezed bosons are not required., Comment: 22 pages

We report the total and differential cross sections for $J/\psi$ photoproduction with the large acceptance GlueX spectrometer for photon beam energies from the threshold at 8.2~GeV up to 11.44~GeV and over the full kinematic range of momentum transfer squared, $t$. Such coverage facilitates the extrapolation of the differential cross sections to the forward ($t = 0$) point beyond the physical region. The forward cross section is used by many theoretical models and plays an important role in understanding $J/\psi$ photoproduction and its relation to the $J/\psi-$proton interaction. These measurements of $J/\psi$ photoproduction near threshold are also crucial inputs to theoretical models that are used to study important aspects of the gluon structure of the proton, such as the gluon Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) of the proton, the mass radius of the proton, and the trace anomaly contribution to the proton mass. We observe possible structures in the total cross section energy dependence and find evidence for contributions beyond gluon exchange in the differential cross section close to threshold, both of which are consistent with contributions from open-charm intermediate states., Comment: 15 pages 18 figures

We investigate single crystals of the trigonal antiferromagnet EuZn$_2$P$_2$ ($P\overline{3}m1$) by means of electrical transport, magnetization measurements, X-ray magnetic scattering, optical reflectivity, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and ab-initio band structure calculations (DFT+U). We find that the electrical resistivity of EuZn$_2$P$_2$ increases strongly upon cooling and can be suppressed in magnetic fields by several orders of magnitude (CMR effect). Resonant magnetic scattering reveals a magnetic ordering vector of $q = (0\, 0\, \frac{1}{2})$, corresponding to an $A$-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order, below $T_{\rm N} = 23.7\,\rm K$. We find that the moments are canted out of the $a-a$ plane by an angle of about $40^{\circ}\pm 10^{\circ}$ degrees and aligned along the [100] in the $a-a$ plane. We observe nearly isotropic magnetization behavior for low fields and low temperatures which is consistent with the magnetic scattering results. The magnetization measurements show a deviation from the Curie-Weiss behavior below $\approx 150\,\rm K$, the temperature below which also the field dependence of the material's resistivity starts to increase. An analysis of the infrared reflectivity spectrum at $T=295\,\rm K$ allows us to resolve the main phonon bands and intra-/interband transitions, and estimate indirect and direct band gaps of $E_i^{\mathrm{opt}}=0.09\,\rm{eV}$ and $E_d^{\mathrm{opt}}=0.33\,\rm{eV}$, respectively, which are in good agreement with the theoretically predicted ones. The experimental band structure obtained by ARPES is nearly $T$-independent above and below $T_{\rm N}$. The comparison of the theoretical and experimental data shows a weak intermixing of the Eu 4$f$ states close to the $\Gamma$ point with the bands formed by the phosphorous 3$p$ orbitals leading to an induction of a small magnetic moment at the P sites.

The method for functional reduction of Feynman integrals, proposed by the author, is used to calculate one-loop integrals corresponding to diagrams with four external lines. The integrals that emerge from amplitudes for the scattering of light by light, the photon splitting in an external field and Delbr\"{u}ck scattering are considered. For master integrals in $d$ - dimensions, new analytic results are presented. For $d=4$, these integrals are given by compact expressions in terms of logarithms and dilogarithms., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

The experimentally measured angle-resolved photoemission dispersion maps for MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ samples, which show different energy gaps at the Dirac point (DP), are compared with the results of theoretical calculations to find the conditions for the best agreement between theory and experiment. We have analyzed different factors which influence the Dirac gap width: (i) the surface van der Waals (SvdW) distance between the first and second septuple layers (SLs), (ii) the magnetic moment on Mn atoms, (iii) the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength for the surface Te and Bi atoms and related changes in the localization of the topological surface states (TSSs). It was shown that all these factors may change the gap width at the DP in a wide range from 5 to $\sim$90~meV. We show that the Dirac gap variation is mainly determined by the corresponding changes in the TSSs spatial distribution. The best agreement between the presented experimental data (with the Dirac gaps between $\sim$15 and 55~meV) and the calculations takes place for a slightly compressed SvdW interval (of about -3.5~\% compared to the bulk value) with modified SOC for surface atoms (that can occur in the presence of various defects in the near-surface region). We show that upon changing the values of the SvdW interval and surface SOC strength the TSSs spatial distribution shifts between the SLs with opposite magnetizations, which leads to a non-monotonic change in the Dirac gap size.

A method of functional reduction for the dimensionally regularized one-loop Feynman integrals with massive propagators is described in detail. The method is based on a repeated application of the functional relations proposed by the author. Explicit formulae are given for reducing one-loop scalar integrals to a simpler ones, the arguments of which are the ratios of polynomials in the masses and kinematic invariants. We show that a general scalar $n$-point integral, depending on $n(n+1)/2$ generic masses and kinematic variables, can be expressed as a linear combination of integrals depending only on $n$ variables. The latter integrals are given explicitly in terms of hypergeometric functions of $(n-1)$ dimensionless variables. Analytic expressions for the 2-, 3- and 4-point integrals, that depend on the minimal number of variables, were also obtained by solving the dimensional recurrence relations. The resulting expressions for these integrals are given in terms of Gauss' hypergeometric function $_2F_1$, the Appell function $F_1$ and the hypergeometric Lauricella - Saran function $F_S$. We find a universal analytic formula for a characteristic function (Fourier transform) of a joint probability distribution for the particle occupation numbers in a BEC gas and the Hafnian Master Theorem generalizing the famous Permanent Master Theorem of MacMahon. We suggest an appealing model, a multi-qubit BEC trap formed by a set of qubit potential wells, and discuss specifics of such an atomic boson-sampling system vs a photonic one. Finally, the process of many-body fluctuations in a BEC trap is #P-hard for computing. It could serve as a basis for demonstrating quantum supremacy of the many-body interacting systems over classical simulators., Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure

We study the scattering of surface TM-polarized plasmon-polariton waves (PPWs) by the finite red region of plane metal-vacuum boundary with randomly inhomogeneous impedance. We analyze the solution of the integral equation connecting the scattered field with the field of the oncoming PPWs, that is valid for any strength of the scattering and dissipative properties of the conducting half-space. As a measure of scattering strength, the Hilbert norm of the intermode scattering operator is used. It is shown that the intensity of the scattering is not only determined by the parameters of the random impedance (the variance, correlation radius, the length of the heterogenious region), but it also crucially depends on the metal substrate conductivity. For a small norm of the integral operator, the incident surface plasmon polariton (SPP) radiates effectively into vacuum, loosing the part of its energy for excitation of quasi-isotropic Norton-type waves above the conducting surface. The intensity of the leaking field is expressed in terms of the pair correlation function of the impedance, the dependence of which on wave numbers of incident and scattered waves demonstrates the possibility to observe a phenomenon similar to Wood's anomalies of wave scattering by periodic lattices. With strong scattering, when the norm of the scattering operator becomes large as compared to unity, the radiation into the volume is highly suppressed and the PPW is basically mirrored from the heterogeneous surface area in backward direction. In the model of dissipationless conducting halfspace, the surface plasmon-polariton becomes unstable for arbitrarily small fluctuations of the conductor polarizability. The mirroring also takes place at small norm of the scattering operator, yet in this case it is related to Anderson's localization of the SPP within the disordered region.

We present a search for axion-like particles, $a$, produced in photon-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of approximately 4 GeV, focusing on the scenario where the $a$-gluon coupling is dominant. The search uses $a\to\gamma\gamma$ and $a\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ decays, and a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 168 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the GlueX detector. The search for $a\to\gamma\gamma$ decays is performed in the mass range of $180 < m_a < 480$ MeV, while the search for $a\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ decays explores the $600 < m_a < 720$ MeV region. No evidence for a signal is found, and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the $a$-gluon coupling strength. We present a finite-order system of recurrence relations for a permanent of circulant matrices containing a band of k any-value diagonals on top of a uniform matrix (for k = 1, 2, and 3) as well as the method for deriving such recurrence relations which is based on the permanents of the matrices with defects. The proposed system of linear recurrence equations with variable coefficients provides a powerful tool for the analysis of the circulant permanents, their fast, linear time computing and finding their asymptotics in a large-matrix-size limit. The latter problem is an open fundamental problem. Its solution would be tremendously important for a unified analysis of a wide range of the nature's #P-hard problems, including problems in the physics of many-body systems, critical phenomena, quantum computing, quantum field theory, theory of chaos, fractals, theory of graphs, number theory, combinatorics, cryptography, etc., Comment: 20 pages

We report on the measurement of spin density matrix elements of the $\Lambda(1520)$ in the photoproduction reaction $\gamma p\rightarrow \Lambda(1520)K^+$, via its subsequent decay to $K^{-}p$. The measurement was performed as part of the GlueX experimental program in Hall D at Jefferson Lab using a linearly polarized photon beam with $E_\gamma =$ 8.2-8.8 GeV. These are the first such measurements in this photon energy range. Results are presented in bins of momentum transfer squared, $-(t-t_\text{0})$. We compare the results with a Reggeon exchange model and determine that natural exchange amplitudes are dominant in $\Lambda(1520)$ photoproduction., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted version

We report a measurement of the $\pi^-$ photoproduction beam asymmetry for the reaction $\vec{\gamma} p \rightarrow \pi^- \Delta^{++}$ using data from the GlueX experiment in the photon beam energy range 8.2--8.8 GeV. The asymmetry $\Sigma$ is measured as a function of four-momentum transfer $t$ to the $\Delta^{++}$ and compared to phenomenological models. We find that $\Sigma$ varies as a function of $t$: negative at smaller values and positive at higher values of $|t|$. The reaction can be described theoretically by $t$-channel particle exchange requiring pseudoscalar, vector, and tensor intermediaries. In particular, this reaction requires charge exchange, allowing us to probe pion exchange and the significance of higher-order corrections to one-pion exchange at low momentum transfer. Constraining production mechanisms of conventional mesons may aid in the search for and study of unconventional mesons. We calculate the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) occupation statistics vs. the interparticle interaction in a dilute gas with a nonuniform condensate in a box trap within the Bogoliubov approach. The results are compared against the previously found BEC-occupation statistics in (i) an ideal gas and (ii) a weakly interacting gas with a uniform condensate. In particular, we reveal and explicitly describe an appearance of a nontrivial transition from the ideal gas to the Thomas-Fermi regime. The results include finding the main regimes of the BEC statistics - the anomalous non-Gaussian thermally-dominated fluctuations and the Gaussian quantum-dominated fluctuations - as well as a crossover between them and their manifestations in a mesoscopic system. Remarkably, we show that the effect of the boundary conditions, imposed at the box trap, on the BEC fluctuations does not vanish in the thermodynamic limit of a macroscopic system even in the presence of the interparticle interactions. The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been designed to study photoproduction reactions with a 9-GeV linearly polarized photon beam. The energy and arrival time of beam photons are tagged using a scintillator hodoscope and a scintillating fiber array. The photon flux is determined using a pair spectrometer, while the linear polarization of the photon beam is determined using a polarimeter based on triplet photoproduction. Charged-particle tracks from interactions in the central target are analyzed in a solenoidal field using a central straw-tube drift chamber and six packages of planar chambers with cathode strips and drift wires. Electromagnetic showers are reconstructed in a cylindrical scintillating fiber calorimeter inside the magnet and a lead-glass array downstream. Charged particle identification is achieved by measuring energy loss in the wire chambers and using the flight time of particles between the target and detectors outside the magnet. The signals from all detectors are recorded with flash ADCs and/or pipeline TDCs into memories allowing trigger decisions with a latency of 3.3 $\mu$s. The detector operates routinely at trigger rates of 40 kHz and data rates of 600 megabytes per second. A novel method for the calculation of eigenfrequencies of non-uniformly filled spherical cavity resonators is developed. The impact of the system symmetry on the electromagnetic field distribution as well as on its degrees of freedom (the set of resonant modes) is examined. It is shown that in the case of angularly symmetric cavity, regardless of its radial non-uniformity, the set of resonator modes is, as anticipated, a superposition of TE and TM oscillations which can be described in terms of a single scalar function independently of each other. The spectrum is basically determined through the introduction of effective ``dynamic'' potentials which encode the infill inhomogeneity. The violation of polar symmetry in the infill dielectric properties, the azimuthal symmetry being simultaneously preserved, suppresses all azimuthally non-uniform modes of electric-type (TM) oscillations. In the absence of angular symmetry of both electric and magnetic properties of the resonator infill, only azimuthally uniform distribution of both TM and TE fields is expected to occur in the resonator. The comparison is made of the results obtained through the proposed method and of the test problem solution obtained with use of commercial solvers. The method appears to be efficient for computational complex algorithms for solving spectral problems, including those for studying the chaotic properties of electrodynamic systems' spectra.

We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ for the reaction $\vec{\gamma} p\to K^+\Sigma^0$(1193) using the GlueX spectrometer in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. Data were collected using a linearly polarized photon beam in the energy range of 8.2-8.8 GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target. The beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ was measured as a function of the Mandelstam variable $t$, and a single value of $\Sigma$ was extracted for events produced in the $u$-channel. These are the first exclusive measurements of the photon beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ for the reaction in this energy range. For the $t$-channel, the measured beam asymmetry is close to unity over the $t$-range studied, $-t=(0.1-1.4)~$(GeV/$c$)$^{2}$, with an average value of $\Sigma = 1.00\pm 0.05$. This agrees with theoretical models that describe the reaction via the natural-parity exchange of the $K^{*}$(892) Regge trajectory. A value of $\Sigma = 0.41 \pm 0.09$ is obtained for the $u$-channel integrated up to $-u=2.0$~(GeV/$c$)$^{2}$.
