No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-02-01 The family Tarsonemidae (Acari: Prostigmata) exhibits a high diversity of feeding habits and morphological structures, which allow them to be successful in many habitats. In Costa Rica, the Mesoamerican forest is a biome that includes all tropical and subtropical natural plant formations with high biodiversity. In Brazil, Theobroma cacao L. (Malvaceae) is cultivated under the canopies of larger trees, in a shaded plantation system called cabruca. Two new Metatarsonemus species are described from Brazilian cabruca agroforest. New records for the genus from Mesoamerica, Atlantic Forest and cabruca agroforest are presented. A key to the species of Metatarsonemus of the world is included. Two new species of Eutarsopolipus (Acariformes: Tarsonemoidea: Podapolipidae) are described from Australian species of Clivina (Coleoptera: Carabidae): Eutarsopolipus divisussp. nov. from Clivina procera Putzeys and Eutarsopolipus olszanowskiisp. nov. from Clivina quadratifrons Sloane. Both new species do not fit into any of the current species groups of Eutarsopolipus, although may be members of the ochoai group that have secondarily lost their claws. A further autapomorphy for the male (known for C. divisus only) is its unusual divided plate CD, which is unique in the Tarsonemoidea.

They also have a considerable diversity of morphological structures, including the shape and structure of the mouthparts and specialized tactile organs, particularly the setae on the body and legs. The Atlantic Forest remnant is considered to be a very diverse tropical biota. Samples were collected on Theobroma cacao and Artocarpus heterophyllus trees in cabruca agroforest systems located in Ilhéus, Bahia State, Brazil. A new species, Excelsotarsonemus cabrucae Sousa, Lofego & Ochoa, sp. n. is described and illustrated. Six Daidalotarsonemus and three Excelsotarsonemus species were identified in the same area. A key to the species of Daidalotarsonemus of Brazil and a key to the species of Excelsotarsonemus of the world are presented. A new genus and species, Lobotarsonemus betulae n. gen., n. sp. (Acari: Tarsonemidae), is described based on phoretic females collected under the hemielytra of the aradid bug Aradus betulae (Linnaeus, 1758) (Heteroptera: Aradidae) in European Russia.

Kaliszewskia ochoai gen. nov., sp. nov. (Tarsonemidae: Tarsoneminae: Tarsonemini) is described from adult females, collected on Blepharocalix salicifolius (Kunth) O.Berg and Plinia sp. (Myrtaceae), from the Atlantic Forest in Brazil.

Two of three new species of Podapolipidae (Acari: Tarsonemoidea) discovered under the elytra of Diplocheila zeelandica (Coleoptera: Carabidae) are described under the names Dorsipes diplocheilae sp. nov. and D. zeelandicae sp. nov. This is the first record of species in the dorsipes group of the genus Dorsipes from the genus Diplocheila. Adult females of species in the dorsipes group share the plesiomorphic character of two pairs of setae on plate EF. The vagina is not broad and the opening is terminal. The male genital capsule is not broader at its base than at its apex. Putative apomorphies for adult females of the dorsipes group are: coxal setae 3a not present, setae v1 reduced, ambulacra I claws small and tarsi II solenidia omega absent. Dorsipes diplocheilae and D. zeelandicae are compared with five species from Europe, Asia and western North America in the dorsipes group, parasites of carabid beetles in the genus Carabus. Revised keys to species of the group dorsipes are provided.

Two male and 2 female forms of a new, dimorphic species of Pyemotes from the scolytid Phleosinus canadensis Swaine are described and life history notes are presented. Only one type of female was found to be phoretic. Normal and phoretomorphic females can produce both normal and phoretomorphic daughters. Two species groups in Pyemotes , the scolyti group and the ventricosus group, are recognized and comparisons of morphological and behavioral adaptations for phoresy are made. Crossing experiments involving several forms indicate the probable existence of several closely related species in the ventricosus group, these often overlapping in their choice of hosts. A key to males of the genus and to females of the scolyti group is presented.

The phoretomorph, representing a new type of phoresy for the Acarina, is a female specialized for riding insects. Certain pyemotid species possess both phoretomorphic and non-phoretomorphic females, but others are monomorphic and have one or the other.
