2. Sex Pheromone Mediates Resource Partitioning Between Drosophila melanogaster and D. suzukii

The spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii and the cosmopolitan vinegar fly D. melanogaster feed on soft fruit and berries and widely overlap in geographic range. The presence of D. melanogaster reduces egg-laying in D. suzukii, possibly because D. melanogaster outcompetes D. suzukii larvae feeding in the same fruit substrate. Flies use pheromones to communicate for mating, but pheromones also serve a role in reproductive isolation between related species. We asked whether a D. melanogaster pheromone also modulates oviposition behaviour in D. suzukii. A dual-choice oviposition assay confirms that D. suzukii lays fewer eggs on blueberries exposed to D. melanogaster flies and further shows that female flies have a stronger effect than male flies. This was corroborated by treating berries with synthetic pheromones. Avoidance of D. suzukii oviposition is mediated by the female D. melanogaster pheromone (Z)-4-undecenal (Z4-11Al). Significantly fewer eggs were laid on berries treated with synthetic Z4-11Al. In comparison, the male pheromone (Z)-11-octadecenyl acetate (cVA) had no effect on D. suzukii oviposition. Z4-11Al is a highly volatile compound that is perceived via olfaction and it is accordingly behaviourally active at a distance from the source. D. suzukii is known to engage in mutual niche construction with the yeast Hanseniaspora uvarum, which strongly attracts flies. Adding Z4-11Al to fermenting H. uvarum significantly decreased D. suzukii flight attraction in a laboratory wind tunnel and a field trapping assay. That a D. melanogaster pheromone regulates oviposition in D. suzukii demonstrates that heterospecific pheromone communication contributes to reproductive isolation and resource partitioning in cognate species. Stimulo-deterrent diversion or push-pull methods, building on combined use of attractant and deterrent compounds, have shown promise for control of D. suzukii. Astrophysics - Abstract
In this work, we present the first AMBER observations, of the Wolf-Rayet and O (WR+O) star binary system y2 Velorum. The AMBER instrument was used with the telescopes UT2, UT3, and UT4 on baselines ranging from 46m to 85m. It delivered spectrally dispersed visibilities, as well as differential and closure phases, with a resolution R = 1500 in the spectral band 1.95-2.17 micron. We interpret these data in the context of a binary system with unresolved components, neglecting in a first approximation the wind-wind collision zone flux contribution. We show that the AMBER observables result primarily from the contribution of the individual components of the WR+O binary system. We discuss several interpretations of the residuals, and speculate on the detection of an additional continuum component, originating from the free-free emission associated with the wind-wind collision zone (WWCZ), and contributing at most to the observed K-band flux at the 5% level. The expected absolute separation and position angle at the time of observations were 5.1±0.9mas and 66±15° respectively. However, we infer a separation of 3.62+0.11-0.30 mas and a position angle of 73+9-11°. Our analysis thus implies that the binary system lies at a distance of 368+38-13 pc, in agreement with recent spectrophotometric estimates, but significantly larger than the Hipparcos value of 258+41-31 pc.

Non vi è vera autonomia senza adeguate competenze sociali. L’indipendenza al di fuori del contesto sociale non è autonomia, bensì emarginazione. E quale ambiente è meglio della scuola per imparare a costruire relazioni sociali ? In classe non si apprendono solo le materie, ma anche il modo di interagire con gli altri: rispetto, condivisione, collaborazione sono alcuni dei principi che dovrebbero ispirare lo stare in mezzo agli altri, in quella palestra di vita che è la scuola. Questo è vero ovviamente anche per quegli alunni che a causa di disabilità intellettive e/o relazionali si trovano in una condizione di difficoltà nel rapporto con i coetanei. Questo volume ha come scopo fornire ai docenti spunti utili per organizzare il lavoro quotidiano con gli allievi che si trovano in questa condizione di difficoltà. Così come per i precedenti volumi di questa collana, è auspicio degli autori ricevere dai docenti un feed-back riguardo alle proposte didattiche offerte.

Educazione speciale 4: motricità è stato realizzato da un gruppo di lavoro di Associazione élève onlus, con la collaborazione di un esperto in neuroscienze. Il lavoro, rivolto inizialmente ai soli studenti con disabilità intellettiva, ha mostrato “sul campo” di essere utile a molti altri studenti con Bisogni Educativi speciali di diverso tipo. Il volume segue i tre precedenti, dedicati a Percezione, attenzione e memoria, Comunicazione e linguaggio, Abilità cognitive e competenze linguistiche; proseguendo l’impegno dell’associazione di volontariato di “esplorare” progressivamente i temi educativi proposti dagli “assi” del MIUR. La “motricità”, che è l’insieme di funzioni del sistema nervoso centrale e delle strutture corporee del movimento, è una delle nostre facoltà fondamentali, e si sviluppa dalla nascita contemporaneamente alle capacità cognitive e relazionali. Ogni “carenza”, “difficoltà”, o “ritardo” nell’acquisizione delle abilità motorie ha ripercussioni in un’ampia gamma di aspetti del nostro funzionamento complessivo. Di conseguenza deve avere lo spazio e l’attenzione doverosi in ogni progetto di abilitazione, rispondente alle specifiche esigenze della persona inserita in una struttura educativa. Il volume Educazione speciale 4: motricità, che è disponibile a colori e in toni di grigio nella versione on-line, ha richiesto particolare attenzione all’aspetto grafico e alle immagini, elaborate con competenza dal medesimo studio editoriale che ha curato i tre volumi precedenti. Il lavoro sulla motricità è diviso in due grandi aree: la motricità grossolana (movimenti di testa, busto e arti) e motricità fine (movimenti di mano, polso, braccio). Le attività da realizzare in queste due aree non richiedono particolari attrezzature, né intendono sovrapporsi a eventuali analoghi interventi di ambiti disciplinari del curricolo scolastico. C’è stato invece un impegno a progettare azioni, originali e efficaci, che coinvolgano sia le capacità motorie che cognitive, calibrate su specifiche difficoltà o disarmonie, presentandole in un’ampia gamma di situazioni. Oltre all’apparato introduttivo e giustificativo del lavoro e delle metodologie adottate, il volume offre numerosi materiali e supporti per la diagnosi iniziale e per la valutazione dei progressi. Come è ormai per noi consueto, le “proposte” sono volutamente degli “spunti” da applicare criticamente. A questo scopo gli autori sollecitano vivamente da parte degli insegnanti che utilizzeranno questi materiali la condivisione di esperienze, critiche e suggerimenti.

In questo terzo volume della collana Educazione speciale, gli autori, membri di una associazione di volontariato, con il contributo di un esperto di neuroscienze, dirigono la loro attenzione sulla costruzione delle abilità cognitive indispensabili per ogni successivo sviluppo culturale. Associare, discriminare, seriare, raggruppare… sono le capacità che ci permettono di acquisire utili strumenti per l’orientamento e l’integrazione nel nostro mondo complesso (parti prima e quarta del volume: Gli oggetti che ci circondano e Classificare, mettere in ordine). Tutte potenzialità che, per chi manifesta qualche grado di disabilità intellettiva, è tanto più necessario edificare con un percorso strutturato, con attività e materiali appositamente progettati e sperimentati sul campo. Una parte del lavoro, la seconda e la quinta, è dedicata allo sviluppo delle abilità linguistiche (parlare, leggere, scrivere), completando quanto proposto in Educazione speciale 2, comunicazione e linguaggio. Ampio spazio infine è riservato ai concetti e alle strutture del “tempo” (terza parte). Dall’alternarsi del giorno e della notte, al flusso del tempo scandito da giorni, settimane, mesi, anni…fino all’uso degli strumenti di misura e referenza, come orologi, calendari, diari... Con una attenzione particolare rivolta alle esperienze personali e alle esigenze della vita quotidiana di bambini e ragazzi. Il volume, che è anche disponibile nella versione on-line (integrata da numerosi materiali aggiuntivi), ha richiesto particolare attenzione all’aspetto grafico e alle immagini, elaborate con competenza dallo stesso studio editoriale che ha curato i due volumi precedenti. Rivolto ai docenti, nelle sezioni introduttive e regolative, con un linguaggio e contenuti adeguati, presenta invece i materiali di lavoro in modo da renderli facilmente comprensibili e stimolanti per gli studenti a cui è rivolto. Molte delle attività prima della pubblicazione sono state sperimentate “volontariamente” sul campo dai docenti di un gruppo a suo tempo formato a questo scopo (Sperimentare insieme 13). Grazie alle loro preziose osservazioni e suggerimenti è stato possibile rivedere e meglio adattare numerose proposte di lavoro. A corredo delle attività, sono presenti Schede di verifica del percorso educativo.

Comunicare è spesso la barriera più difficile da superare per bambini e ragazzi con disabilità intellettiva. Insegnare a comunicare rimane uno dei compiti più impegnativi per docenti curricolari, insegnanti di sostegno e educatori che operano con allievi con una limitazione nella comunicazione non verbale o verbale, nonostante le numerose tecniche elaborate nel corso degli anni e i più recenti strumenti tecnologici presenti sul mercato. Il volume presenta una proposta didattica articolata nelle aree: • Comunicazione non verbale; • Comunicazione verbale: - Parlare; - Leggere; - Scrivere. Il livello di partenza delle singole proposte è quello minimo: l’allievo mostra le potenzialità per apprendere quella abilità, ma ancora non ha compiuto i primi passi. O magari ha alle spalle una storia di tentativi improvvisati, disarticolati e infruttuosi. Il volume è organizzato come una guida per piccoli passi: ogni attività può durare anche pochi minuti e l’apprendimento va costruito con continuità nel tempo. Le diverse situazioni didattiche sono presentate in modo concreto, per stimolare l’attenzione e l’interesse dell’allievo. Per ogni attività sono proposte anche schede di verifica e suggerimenti per la valutazione dell’apprendimento. L’aspetto grafico, i caratteri, le immagini, i colori sono pensati per aderire alle speciali esigenze degli allievi e facilitare il compito del docente. Gran parte dei materiali presenti nell’opera sono stati sperimentati nella concreta realtà scolastica da docenti curricolari, insegnanti di sostegno o educatori. L’impostazione concettuale dell’intero lavoro ha avuto il riscontro di esperti in neuroscienze.

International audience; Aims. We study the geometry and kinematics of the circumstellar environment of the Be star Kappa CMa in the Br gamma emission line and its nearby continuum. Methods. We use the VLTI/AMBER instrument operating in the K band which provides a spatial resolution of about 6 mas with a spectral resolution of 1500 to study the kinematics within the disk and to infer its rotation law. In order to obtain more kinematical constraints we also use an high spectral resolution Pa beta line profile obtain in December 2005 at the Observatorio do Pico do Dios, Brazil and we compile V/R line profile variations and spectral energy distribution data points from the literature. Results. Using differential visibilities and differential phases across the Br gamma line we detect an asymmetry in the disk. Moreover, we found that kappa CMa seems difficult to fit within the classical scenario for Be stars, illustrated recently by alpha Arae observations, i.e. a fast rotating B star close to its breakup velocity surrounded by a Keplerian circumstellar disk with an enhanced polar wind. Finally we discuss the possibility for kappa CMa to be a critical rotator with a Keplerian rotating disk and try to see if the detected asymmetry can be interpreted within the "one-armed" viscous disk framework.

The young stellar object MWC 297 has been observed with the VLT interferometer equipped with the AMBER instrument. MWC 297 has been spatially resolved in the continuum with a visibility of 0.50 as well as in the Br gamma emission line where the visibility decrease to a lower value of 0.33. This change in the visibility with the wavelength can be interpreted by the presence of an optically thick disk responsible for the visibility in the continuum and of a stellar wind traced by Br gamma and whose apparent size is 40% larger. We validate this interpretation by building a model of the stellar environment that combines a geometrically thin, optically thick accretion disk model consisting of gas and dust, and a latitude-dependent stellar wind outflowing above the disk surface. The continuum emission and visibilities obtained from this model are fully consistent with the interferometric AMBER data. They agree also with existing optical, near-infrared spectra and other broad-band near-infrared interferometric visibilities. A picture emerges in which MWC 297 is surrounded by an equatorial flat disk that is possibly still accreting and an outflowing wind which has a much higher velocity in the polar region than at the equator. - Abstract
The young stellar object MWC 297is an embedded B1.5Ve star exhibiting strong hydrogen emission lines and a strong near-infrared continuum excess. This object has been observed with the VLT interferometer equipped with the AMBER instrument during its first commissioning run. AMBER/VLTI is currently the only near infrared interferometer that can observe spectrally dispersed visibilities. MWC 297has been spatially resolved in the continuum with a visibility of $0.50^{+0.08}_{-0.10}$as well as in the Brγemission line where the visibility decreases to $0.33\pm0.06$. This change in the visibility with wavelength can be interpreted by the presence of an optically thick disk responsible for the visibility in the continuum and of a stellar wind traced by the Brγemission line and whose apparent size is 40% larger. We validate this interpretation by building a model of the stellar environment that combines a geometrically thin, optically thick accretion disk model consisting of gas and dust, and a latitude-dependent stellar wind outflowing above the disk surface. The continuum emission and visibilities obtained from this model are fully consistent with the interferometric AMBER data. They agree also with existing optical, near-infrared spectra and other broad-band near-infrared interferometric visibilities. We also reproduce the shape of the visibilities in the Brγline as well as the profile of this line obtained at an higher spectral resolution with the VLT/ISAAC spectrograph, and those of the Hαand Hβlines. The disk and wind models yield a consistent inclination of the system of approximately 20°. A picture emerges in which MWC 297is surrounded by an equatorial flat disk that is possibly still accreting and an outflowing wind that has a much higher velocity in the polar region than at the equator. The AMBER/VLTI unique capability of measuring spectral visibilities therefore allows us for the first time to compare the apparent geometry of a wind with the disk structure in a young stellar system.

Aims.We present the first NIR spectro-interferometryof the LBV ηCarinae. The observations were performed with the AMBER instrument of the ESO Very Large Telescope Interferometer(VLTI) using baselines from 42 to 89 m. The aim of this work is to study the wavelength dependence of ηCar's optically thick wind region with a high spatial resolution of 5 mas (11 AU) and high spectral resolution.

25. Sex Pheromone Mediates Resource Partitioning Between Drosophila melanogaster and D. suzukii .

- Abstract
The spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii and the cosmopolitan vinegar fly D. melanogaster feed on soft fruit and berries and widely overlap in geographic range. The presence of D. melanogaster reduces egg-laying in D. suzukii , possibly because D. melanogaster outcompetes D. suzukii larvae feeding in the same fruit substrate. Flies use pheromones to communicate for mating, but pheromones also serve a role in reproductive isolation between related species. We asked whether a D. melanogaster pheromone also modulates oviposition behaviour in D. suzukii . A dual-choice oviposition assay confirms that D. suzukii lays fewer eggs on blueberries exposed to D. melanogaster flies and further shows that female flies have a stronger effect than male flies. This was corroborated by treating berries with synthetic pheromones. Avoidance of D. suzukii oviposition is mediated by the female D. melanogaster pheromone ( Z )-4-undecenal (Z4-11Al). Significantly fewer eggs were laid on berries treated with synthetic Z4-11Al. In comparison, the male pheromone ( Z )-11-octadecenyl acetate (cVA) had no effect on D. suzukii oviposition. Z4-11Al is a highly volatile compound that is perceived via olfaction and it is accordingly behaviourally active at a distance from the source. D. suzukii is known to engage in mutual niche construction with the yeast Hanseniaspora uvarum , which strongly attracts flies. Adding Z4-11Al to fermenting H. uvarum significantly decreased D. suzukii flight attraction in a laboratory wind tunnel and a field trapping assay. That a D. melanogaster pheromone regulates oviposition in D. suzukii demonstrates that heterospecific pheromone communication contributes to reproductive isolation and resource partitioning in cognate species. Stimulo-deterrent diversion or push-pull methods, building on combined use of attractant and deterrent compounds, have shown promise for control of D. suzukii . - Abstract
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the rectum is a rare malignancy, and the optimal treatment strategy remains unknown. Cases are limited in the literature, and although historically treated with surgical resection, more recent cases have suggested success with chemotherapy. Although Nigro protocol was initially developed for anal SCC, we present a case of rectal SCC successfully treated with the Nigro protocol. Abstract: Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is a neoplasm that most commonly occurs on sun-damaged skin of the head and neck in elderly patients and that usually exhibits indolent clinical behavior with complete excision. The granular cell variant of AFX demonstrates overlapping histopathologic features with dermal non-neural granular cell tumor (NNGCT), which typically arises on the extremities of young to middle aged adults with rare reports of regional metastasis. A subset of NNGCT harbors ALK rearrangements and expresses ALK by immunohistochemistry. Here, we present 2 cases of granular cell AFX occurring on the scalp of males aged 73 and 87 with ALK expression by immunohistochemistry and no evidence of an ALK rearrangement on fluorescence in situ hybridization, representing a diagnostic pitfall for NNGCT., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2021 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. - Abstract
A man aged 69 years presented with acute right flank pain secondary to a hemorrhagic large adrenal tumor. En bloc resection was performed to repair the inferior vena cava. Immunoperoxidase levels in the tumor were positive for factor VIII and CD31 and negative for S100, protein Melan-A, CD34, synaptophysin, chromogranin, desmin, muscle specific actin, ETFA (EMA), KRT20 (CK20), CDX2, TTF1, LNPEP (PLAP), inhibin, ?-fetoprotein, CD30, hepatocyte paraffin, and aberrant expression of cytokeratin 7 and pankeratin. The pathological diagnosis was consistent with adrenal angiosarcoma. Obtaining appropriate immunoperoxidase stains and multidisciplinary evaluation helped make the diagnosis of this rare adrenal tumor and determine its management. The patient had an uneventful postoperative course and completed 4 cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy with doxorubicin/ifosfamide and adequately tolerated the treatment. However, positive surgical margins were found, so he was referred to radiation oncology specialists for possible adjuvant radiotherapy to the surgical bed. Weeks after the first initiation of therapy, the patient presented to the emergency department complaining of shortness of breath, fatigue, and generalized weakness for 3 days. He was admitted and found to have new-onset anemia and a new-onset, large, right pleural effusion. Thoracentesis performed showed sanguinolent fluid that, after microscopic evaluation, was suggestive of recurrent malignancy. Thoracic aortography performed with subselective catheterization to several arteries (right bronchial, right phrenic, and right renal arteries) did not show any active bleeding. However, the right inferior intercostal and adrenal arteries were presumed to be the reason for the bleeding event, so they were embolized until stasis. The patient remained hemodynamically unstable but eventually experienced multiorgan failure. In spite of aggressive measures, he died 10 days after admission to the hospital.

29. Case Report: Unusual Manifestation of KIT Negative Systemic Mastocytosis.

- Abstract
Aggressive systemic mastocytosis is a rare hematologic neoplastic disease that presents with a poor prognosis and low survival rate. It typically manifests with symptoms associated to mast cell release of bioactive substances, causing anaphylaxis, flushing, autonomic and hemodynamic instability, gastric distress and headache. Moreover, more than 95% of cases are related to a mutation in codon 816 of the KIT gene, located on human chromosome 4q12 which codes for a type III receptor tyrosine kinase. We present a 78 year-old Hispanic man diagnosed with the aggressive subtype of systemic mastocytosis, who had an atypical manifestation and a KIT negative variant. The diagnosis was confirmed based on pathologic and serologic findings which included mast cell infiltration of the spleen and bone marrow, malignant ascites and an unusually elevated serum tryptase.
