We consider the decomposition of water temperature fields into the Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOFs), also known as Principal Components (PCs). We use the GREP data (Global Reanalysis Ensemble Product) in this study and we examine water temperature at the horizon of 457 m for the period 1993–2019 in the area limited to 50°–80°N, 50°W–20°E. It is shown that the first two Principal Components of decomposition (PC1 and PC2) are responsible for 48% of the total variance, and all subsequent ones are smaller by an order of magnitude. The time series of PC1 and PC2 are further considered as indicators responsible for the transfer of Atlantic heat to the Arctic. Transport and heat fluxes have been calculated through the cross-section 64.5°N, which connects Iceland with Scandinavia. It is shown that PC1 characterizes transport through the cross-section, and PC2 is responsible for heat fluxes. The analysis of the spatial distribution of PC1 and PC2 loadings allowed us to introduce three new NAT, NAHT1, and NAHT2 indices determined by water temperature anomalies. The NAT index is responsible for the transport of Atlantic waters to the Arctic, and two identical indices NAT1 and NAT2 characterize the corresponding heat transfer by these waters. Aleutian eddies are mesoscale anticyclonic eddies formed within the Alaskan Stream over theAleutian trench in the area of 50-52 ° N, 170-175 ° E. It is found that canyons along the shelffault appear to be more prone to eddy activity than regions without canyons. Aleutian eddiespropagate southwestward after the separation from the Alaskan Stream and pass through theWestern Subarctic Gyre, carrying the transformed waters of the Gulf of Alaska to the westernpart of the Pacific Subarctic. Fishermen and oceanographers are well aware of the role ofsome anticyclonic eddies near the trenches in the formation of places favorable for fishing.They are formed by the mixing of the waters of the Alaskan Stream and the waters of theSubarctic Current. The appearance of Aleutian eddies is accompanied by a deepening ofisopycnic surfaces and an increase in temperature and concentration of dissolved oxygen inthe layer of 150– 400 m.Based on the GLORYS12V1 data, the thermohaline structure of individual eddies and theirdynamic properties are analyzed. The GLORYS12V1 product is a global reanalysis coveringaltimetry data since 1993. It is based on the existing real-time CMEMS (Copernicus MarineEnvironment Monitoring Service) global forecasting system. The component of this model isthe NEMO platform controlled on the surface by ECMWF ERA-Interim. The observationsare then assimilated using a reduced-order Kalman filter. The work uses daily data for 2019"GLOBAL_REANALYSIS_PHY_001_030" displayed on a standard regular grid in 1/12°increments (approximately 8 km) and on 50 standard levels.

Лофотенская котловина, расположенная в Норвежском море, является мощным накопителем атлантических вод. Заглубление атлантических вод в котловине определяет не только структуру ее водных масс, но и особенности процессов взаимодействия океан-атмосфера. В работе исследуются изопикническая адвекция и диапикническое перемешивание в Лофотенской котловине. По данным океанического реанализа GLORYS12V1 построены и проанализированы четыре изостерические -поверхности, в частности, глубина их залегания. Установлено, что изостерические поверхности в Лофотенской котловине имеют наклон в направлении с запада на восток с максимальными глубинами в центре котловины, где расположен квазипостоянный Лофотенский вихрь. Рассмотрено распределение температуры на изопикнических поверхностях. Проанализирована межгодовая и сезонная изменчивость их глубины залегания. Показано, что максимум глубины изостерических поверхностей поверхности наблюдается в 2010 г., который отмечается как год аномально больших глубин верхнего квазиоднородного слоя Лофотенской котловины, подтвержденных измерениями буев ARGO. Максимумы в 2000, 2010, 2013 и 2016 гг. соответствуют годам глубокой конвекции. Выявлено, что максимальная глубина на изостерических поверхностях достигается летом. Области с наибольшими глубинами летом также имеют максимальную площадь, а зимой минимальны. Это означает, с одной стороны, определенную инерцию изменения термохалинных характеристик атлантических водных масс, а с другой - сдвиг на 1-2 сезона влияния глубокой конвекции на изостерические поверхности. Показано, что изопикническая адвекция в Лофотенской котловине дает значительный вклад в ее роль как основного теплового резервуара субарктических морей.

The asymptotic behavior of Rossby waves in the ocean interacting with a shear stationary flow is considered. It is shown that there is a qualitative difference between the problems for the zonal and non-zonal background flow. Whereas only one critical layer arises for a zonal flow, then several critical layers can exist for a non-zonal flow. It is established that the integrated ray equations of Hamilton are equivalent to the asymptotic behavior of the Cauchy problem solution. Explicit analytical solutions are obtained for the tracks of Rossby waves as a function of time and initial parameters of the wave disturbance, as well as the magnitude of the shear and angle of inclination of the flow to the zonal direction. The ray equations of Hamilton are analytically integrated for Rossby waves on a shear flow. The obtained explicit expressions make it possible to calculate in real-time the Rossby wave tracks for any initial wave direction and any shear current inclination angle. It is shown qualitatively that these tracks for a non-zonal flow are strongly anisotropic., Рассматривается асимптотическое поведение волн Россби, взаимодействующих со сдвиговым стационарным течением. Показано, что в этих задачах существует качественное отличие задач для зонального и незонального фонового потока. Если для зонального потока возникает только один критический слой, то для незонального может существовать несколько критических слоев. Установлено, что проинтегрированные лучевые уравнения Гамильтона оказываются равносильны асимптотикам решения задачи Коши. Получены явные аналитические решения для волновых треков волн Россби, как функции времени и начальных параметров волнового возмущения, а также величины сдвига и угла наклона потока к зональному направлению. На примере волн Россби на сдвиговом потоке аналитически проинтегрированы лучевые уравнения Гамильтона. Полученные явные выражения позволяют рассчитывать в реальном времени треки волн Россби для любого начального направления волны и для любого угла наклона сдвигового течения. Показано, что эти треки для незонального потока качественно носят сильно анизотропный характер.

Purpose. The Lofoten Basin is one of the most energetic zones of the World Ocean characterized by high activity of mesoscale eddies. The study is aimed at analyzing different components of general energy in the basin, namely the mean kinetic and vortex kinetic energy calculated using the integral of the volume of available potential and kinetic energy of the Lofoten Vortex, as well as variability of these characteristics. Methods and Results. GLORYS12V1 reanalysis data for the period 2010–2018 were used. The mean kinetic energy and the eddy kinetic one were analyzed; and as for the Lofoten Vortex, its volume available potential and kinetic energy was studied. Mesoscale activity of eddies in winter is higher than in summer. Evolution of the available potential energy and kinetic energy of the Lofoten Vortex up to the 1000 m horizon was studied. It is shown that the vortex available potential energy exceeds the kinetic one by an order of magnitude, and there is a positive trend with the coefficient 0,23·1015 J/year. It was found that in the Lofoten Basin, the intermediate layer from 600 to 900 m made the largest contribution to the potential energy, whereas the 0–400 m layer – to kinetic energy. The conversion rates of the mean kinetic energy into the vortex kinetic one, and the mean available potential energy into the vortex available potential one (baroclinic and barotropic instability) were analyzed. It is shown that the first type of transformation dominates in summer, while the second one is characterized by its increase in winter. Conclusions. The vertical profile shows that kinetic energy of eddies in winter is higher than in summer. The available potential energy of a vortex is by an order of magnitude greater than the kinetic energy. Increase in the available potential energy is confirmed by a significant positive trend and by decrease of the vortex Burger number. The graphs of the barotropic instability conversion rate demonstrate the multidirectional flows in the vortex zone with the dipole structure observed in a winter period, and the tripole one – in summer. The barotropic instability highest intensity is observed in summer. The baroclinic instability is characterized by intensification of the regime in winter that is associated with weakening of stratification in this period owing to winter convection.
