Abstract

The nano-meter beam size in future linear colliders requires very high resolution beam position monitor since higher resolution allows more accurate position measurement in the interaction point. We developed and tested a low-Q C-band beam position monitor with position resolution of nanometer. The C-band BPM was tested for the fast beam feedback system at the interaction point of ATF2 in KEK, in which C-band beam position monitor is called to IPBPM (Interaction Point Beam Position Monitor). The average position resolution of the developed IPBPMs was measured to be 10.1 nm at a nominal beam charge of $87\%$ of ATF2. From the measured beam position resolution, we can expect beam position resolution of around 8.8 nm and 4.4 nm with nominal ATF2 and ILC beam charge conditions, respectively, in which the position resolution is below the vertical beam size in ILC. In this paper, we describe the development of the IPBPM and the beam test results at the nanometer level in beam position resolution, Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures. Abstract

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear $e^+e^-$ collider under development at CERN. Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept has been refined using improved software tools. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations and parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start by 2026. Abstract

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a multi-TeV high-luminosity linear e+e- collider under development. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in a staged approach with three centre-of-mass energy stages ranging from a few hundred GeV up to 3 TeV. The first stage will focus on precision Standard Model physics, in particular Higgs and top-quark measurements. Subsequent stages will focus on measurements of rare Higgs processes, as well as searches for new physics processes and precision measurements of new states, e.g. states previously discovered at LHC or at CLIC itself. In the 2012 CLIC Conceptual Design Report, a fully optimised 3 TeV collider was presented, while the proposed lower energy stages were not studied to the same level of detail. This report presents an updated baseline staging scenario for CLIC. The scenario is the result of a comprehensive study addressing the performance, cost and power of the CLIC accelerator complex as a function of centre-of-mass energy and it targets optimal physics output based on the current physics landscape. The optimised staging scenario foresees three main centre-of-mass energy stages at 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV for a full CLIC programme spanning 22 years. Abstract

Model-independent analysis (MIA) methods are generally useful for analysing complex systems in which relationships between the observables are non-trivial and noise is present. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is one of MIA methods allowing to isolate components in the input data graded to their contribution to the variability of the data. In this publication we show how the PCA can be applied to digitised signals obtained from a cavity beam position monitor (CBPM) system on the example of a 3-cavity test system installed at the Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2) at KEK in Japan. We demonstrate that the PCA based method can be used to extract beam position information, and matches conventional techniques in terms of performance, while requiring considerably less settings and data for calibration.

Abstract

The Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2) is a scaled demonstrator system for final focus beam lines of linear high energy colliders. This paper describes the high resolution cavity beam position monitor (BPM) system, which is a part of the ATF2 diagnostics. Two types of cavity BPMs are used, C-band operating at 6.423 GHz, and S-band at 2.888 GHz with an increased beam aperture. The cavities, electronics, and digital processing are described. The resolution of the C-band system with attenuators was determined to be approximately 250 nm and 1 m for the S-band system. Abstract

We have developed a compact cryogenic system with a pulse tube refrigerator and a coaxial heat exchanger. This liquefaction-purification system not only saves the cooling power used to reach high gaseous recirculation rate, but also reduces the impurity level with high speed. The heat exchanger operates with an efficiency of 99%, which indicates the possibility for fast xenon gas recirculation in a highpressurized large-scale xenon storage with much less thermal losses.

Abstract

The beam test for the Shintake monitor succeeded in measuring signal modulation with the laser interference fringe pattern in November 2009. We have studied the error sources, and evaluated the systematic error to be less than 30% for 1 minute measurements. This paper centers on the evaluation of the Shintake monitor performance through analyzing beam tests deta. Most systematic error sources are well understood, enabling accurate measurement of the beam size when it reaches 37 nm.

Shintake monitor is a nanometer-scale electron beam size monitor. It probes a electron beam by an interference fringe pattern formed by split laser beams. Minimum measurable beam size by this method is less than 1/10 of laser wavelength. In ATF2, Shintake monitor will be used for the IP beam size monitor to measure 37 nm (design) beam size. Development status of the Shintake monitor, including fringe phase monitoring and stabilization, gamma detector and collimators, is described. Abstract

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a multi-TeV high-luminosity linear e+e- collider under development. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in a staged approach with three centre-of-mass energy stages ranging from a few hundred GeV up to 3 TeV. The first stage will focus on precision Standard Model physics, in particular Higgs and top-quark measurements. Subsequent stages will focus on measurements of rare Higgs processes, as well as searches for new physics processes and precision measurements of new states, e.g. states previously discovered at LHC or at CLIC itself. In the 2012 CLIC Conceptual Design Report, a fully optimised 3 TeV collider was presented, while the proposed lower energy stages were not studied to the same level of detail. This report presents an updated baseline staging scenario for CLIC. The scenario is the result of a comprehensive study addressing the performance, cost and power of the CLIC accelerator complex as a function of centre-of-mass energy and it targets optimal physics output based on the current physics landscape. The optimised staging scenario foresees three main centre-of-mass energy stages at 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV for a full CLIC programme spanning 22 years. For the first stage, an alternative to the CLIC drive beam scheme is presented in which the main linac power is produced using X-band klystrons. 35. A superconducting magnet upgrade of the ATF2 final focus

Abstract

The ATF2 facility at KEK is a proving ground for linear collider technology with a well instrumented extracted beam line and Final Focus (FF). The primary ATF2 goal is to demonstrate the extreme beam demagnification and spot stability needed for a linear collider FF [1]. But the ATF2 FF uses water cooled magnets and the ILC baseline has a superconducting (SC) FF [2]. We plan to upgrade ATF2 and replace some of the warm FF magnets with SC FF magnets. The ATF2 SC magnets, like the ILC FF, will made via direct wind construction [3]. ATF2 coil winding is in progress at BNL and warm magnetic measurements indicate we have achieved good field quality. Studies indicate that having ATF2 FF magnets with larger aperture and better field quality should allow reducing the ATF2 FF beta function for study of focusing regimes relevant to CLIC [4]. The ATF2 magnet cryostat will have laser view ports for directly monitoring cold mass movement. We plan to make stability measurements at BNL and KEK to relate ATF2 FF magnet performance to that of a full length ILC QD0 RandD FF prototype under construction at BNL.

Abstract

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a multi-TeV high-luminosity linear e+e- collider under development. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in a staged approach with three centre-of-mass energy stages ranging from a few hundred GeV up to 3 TeV. The first stage will focus on precision Standard Model physics, in particular Higgs and top-quark measurements. Subsequent stages will focus on measurements of rare Higgs processes, as well as searches for new physics processes and precision measurements of new states, e.g. states previously discovered at LHC or at CLIC itself. In the 2012 CLIC Conceptual Design Report, a fully optimised 3 TeV collider was presented, while the proposed lower energy stages were not studied to the same level of detail. This report presents an updated baseline staging scenario for CLIC. The scenario is the result of a comprehensive study addressing the performance, cost and power of the CLIC accelerator complex as a function of centre-of-mass energy and it targets optimal physics output based on the current physics landscape. The optimised staging scenario foresees three main centre-of-mass energy stages at 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV for a full CLIC programme spanning 22 years. For the first stage, an alternative to the CLIC drive beam scheme is presented in which the main linac power is produced using X-band klystrons.

Abstract

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a multi-TeV high-luminosity linear e+e- collider under development. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in a staged approach with three centre-of-mass energy stages ranging from a few hundred GeV up to 3 TeV. The first stage will focus on precision Standard Model physics, in particular Higgs and top-quark measurements. Subsequent stages will focus on measurements of rare Higgs processes, as well as searches for new physics processes and precision measurements of new states, e.g. states previously discovered at LHC or at CLIC itself. In the 2012 CLIC Conceptual Design Report, a fully optimised 3 TeV collider was presented, while the proposed lower energy stages were not studied to the same level of detail. This report presents an updated baseline staging scenario for CLIC. The scenario is the result of a comprehensive study addressing the performance, cost and power of the CLIC accelerator complex as a function of centre-of-mass energy and it targets optimal physics output based on the current physics landscape. The optimised staging scenario foresees three main centre-of-mass energy stages at 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV for a full CLIC programme spanning 22 years. For the first stage, an alternative to the CLIC drive beam scheme is presented in which the main linac power is produced using X-band klystrons.

Abstract

International audience; Without counter measures, ground motion effects would deteriorate the performance of future linear colliders to an unacceptable level. An envisioned new ground motion mitigation method (based on feed-forward control) has the potential to improve the performance and to reduce the system cost compared to other proposed methods. For the experimental verification of this feed-forward scheme, a dedicated measurement setup has been installed at ATF2 at KEK. In this paper, the progress on this experimental verification is described. An important part of the feed-forward scheme could be already demonstrated, namely the prediction of the orbit jitter due to ground motion measurements.

Abstract

The International Linear Collider Technical Design Report (TDR) describes in four volumes the physics case and the design of a 500 GeV centre-of-mass energy linear electron-positron collider based on superconducting radio-frequency technology using Niobium cavities as the accelerating structures. The accelerator can be extended to 1 TeV and also run as a Higgs factory at around 250 GeV and on the Z0 pole. A comprehensive value estimate of the accelerator is give, together with associated uncertainties. It is shown that no significant technical issues remain to be solved. Once a site is selected and the necessary site-dependent engineering is carried out, construction can begin immediately. The TDR also gives baseline documentation for two high-performance detectors that can share the ILC luminosity by being moved into and out of the beam line in a "push-pull" configuration. These detectors, ILD and SiD, are described in detail. They form the basis for a world-class experimental programme that promises to increase significantly our understanding of the fundamental processes that govern the evolution of the Universe.

A major issue at ATF2 and in linear colliders is to control the beam halo, which consists of tails extending far beyond the Gaussian core of the beam. At present there is no dedicated collimation for the beam halo at ATF2, and the transverse distribution near the interaction point is not well known. The development of a sensor based on CVD diamond to scan the beam halo in the vacuum chamber a few meters after the interaction point is presented. This system also aims to detect the Compton recoil electrons generated by the laser interferometer (Shintake monitor) used to measure the beam size at the interaction point of ATF2.

A major goal of ATF2 is to demonstrate the ability to stabilise the beam position at the interaction point, where the beam can be focused down to about 35 nm. For this purpose, a set of new Beam Position Monitors (BPM) has been designed, with an expected resolution of about 2 nm. These BPMs must be very well aligned with respect to the beam, at the few micron level, to fully exploit their fine resolution. In this paper, the mechanical positioning system which has been developed to enable such a precise alignment is presented. It is based on a set of eight piezo actuators with nanometer range displacement resolution, mounted in a new specially made vacuum chamber. Due to the expected resolution of the piezo actuators, this system also brings a new functionality, the possibility to calibrate the BPMs by mechanically scanning the beam.

Abstract

The next generation of future linear colliders (LC) demands nano-meter beam sizes at the interaction point (IP) in order to reach the required luminosity. The final focus system (FFS) of a LC is meant to deliver such small beam sizes. The Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) aims to test the feasibility of the new local chromaticity correction scheme which the future LCs are based on. To this end the ATF2 nominal and ultra-low beta* lattices are design to vertically focus the beam at the IP to 37nm and 23nm, respectively if error-free lattices are considered. However simulations show that the measured field errors of the ATF2 magnets preclude to reach the mentioned spot sizes. This paper describes the optimization of high order aberrations of the ATF2 lattices in order to minimize the detrimental effect of the measured multipole components for both ATF2 lattices. Specifically three solutions are studied, the replacement of the last focusing quadrupole (QF1FF), insertion of octupole magnets and optics modification. By applying the mentioned cures the design vertical beam size at the IP is almost recovered for both ATF2 lattices.

Abstract

MOPPR004; The development of a detection technique for the recoil spectrum of the beam electrons undergoing Compton scattering with the photons of the laser used to measure the beam size at the interaction point of the ATF2 final focus prototype is reported, based on installing radiation hard semi- conductor sensors after a bending magnet downstream. The same technique allows the beam halo distribution to be measured after the interaction point.
