The main purpose of this research is to examine the effect of game-based learning on knowledge acquisition and retention of road rules. A secondary purpose of this study is to investigate possible gender differences related to such an approach. The third purpose is to explore the relationship between beliefs and knowledge acquisition. This quasi-experimental study employed pretest-posttests design involving 42 participants, randomly selected from people in Alberta, Canada. The participants took a pretest, played a game specifically designed to help players learn road rules, and then two posttests. The results show that gaming not only can improve players' knowledge of road rules and road safety but also can help players retain such knowledge. However, no gender difference was identified in knowledge gain after the gaming intervention.

The problem of collisions on local roads has received little specific attention despite the considerable number of such collisions that occur each year. First part of this study identifies the factors that influence local road collision frequency at traffic analysis zone (TAZ) level with a particular focus on the planning and policy related variables. The City of Calgary is used as a case study, where we focus on the impacts of land use, demographic characteristics, and travel characteristics. We also investigate the effects of some key transportation planning parameters for which there have been very limited studies, including the number of personal and commercial trips and the employment numbers in various categories. This study examines the impact of the number of trips made by automobile versus more sustainable transport modes like transit, walking, and biking for personal travel. It also examines the impact of commercial truck movement on the number of collisions on local roads in a TAZ. The impact of transit-oriented development zone initiatives is explored, as is the relationship between the predominant land use type (e.g., residential, commercial, industrial) and the number of collisions on local roads. In the second part, collision prediction models were linked with regional transportation model (RTM), which is calibrated and modeled in EMME. Since the choice of transportation mode is explicitly modeled through utility functions in the RTM, the proposed approach will allow us to do scenario analysis for planning and policy level issues proactively such as impact on local collisions due to change in fuel price, parking cost, transit headway, and transit fare. Results showed that property damage only (PDO) and fatal and injury (FI) collisions decreased by 13% and 6%, respectively, when fuel price was doubled. It was also observed that PDO and FI collisions decreased by 8% and 5%, respectively, when parking cost was doubled. PDO and FI collisions decreased by 7% and 4%, respectively, when transit headway was reduced to half. When transit fare was reduced to half, PDO and FI collisions decreased by 5% and 2%, respectively. PDO and FI collisions decreased by 10% and 5%, respectively, when transit fare was set to zero. These scenario analyses demonstrate how the impact of transportation planning or policy level issues on the collision count on local roads can be incorporated in our proposed model. Le probleme des collisions sur les routes locales a recu peu d'attention specifique malgre le nombre considerable de ces collisions qui se produisent chaque annee. La premiere partie de cette etude identifie les facteurs qui influent sur la frequence des collisions sur les routes locales au niveau de la zone d'analyse du trafic (ZAT) en mettant un accent particulier sur les variables liees a la planification et aux politiques. Nous utilisons la ville de Calgary comme etude de cas, ou nous nous penchons sur les repercussions de l'utilisation des terres, les caracteristiques demographiques et les caracteristiques des deplacements. Nous etudions egalement les effets de certains parametres cles de planification des transports pour lesquels il y a eu tres peu d'etudes, y compris le nombre de deplacements personnels et commerciaux et le nombre d'emplois dans diverses categories. Cette etude examine l'incidence du nombre de deplacements effectues en automobile par rapport aux modes de transport plus durables comme le transport en commun, la marche et le velo pour les deplacements personnels. L'etude examine egalement l'incidence du mouvement des camions commerciaux sur le nombre de collisions sur les routes locales dans une ZAT. L'incidence des initiatives de zones de developpement axees sur le transport en commun est etudiee, tout comme la relation entre le type d'utilisation predominante des terres (p. ex., residentielle, commerciale, industrielle) et le nombre de collisions sur les routes locales. Dans la deuxieme partie, les modeles de prevision de collisions ont ete lies au modele de transport regional (MTR) qui est calibre et modelise dans le logiciel EMME. Puisque le choix du mode de transport est explicitement modelise par des fonctions d'utilite dans le MTR, l'approche proposee nous permettra d'effectuer une analyse de scenarios pour les questions de planification et de politiques de facon proactive, comme l'incidence sur les collisions locales en raison de la variation du prix du carburant, du cout du stationnement, des intervalles du transport en commun et des tarifs de transport en commun. Les resultats ont montre que les collisions causant uniquement des dommages materiels (UDM) et de type causant des fatalites et des blessures (FB) ont diminue de 13% et de 6%, respectivement, lorsque le prix du carburant a double. On a aussi observe que les collisions UDM et FB ont diminue de 8% et de 5%, respectivement, lorsque le cout du stationnement a double. Les collisions UDM et FB ont diminue de 7% et de 4%, respectivement, lorsque les intervalles du transport en commun ont ete reduites de moitie. Lorsque le tarif de transport en commun a ete reduit de moitie, les collisions UDM et FB ont diminue de 5% et de 2%, respectivement. Les collisions UDM et FB ont diminue de 10% et de 5%, respectivement, lorsque le tarif de transport en commun a ete fixe a zero. Walking, cycling, and feeder bus/tram for first- and last-mile (FLM) train access are often considered to have better health benefits, lower cost, and less environmental impacts than driving. However, little is known about the road safety impacts of these FLM access modes, particularly at a network level. This paper aims to investigate the impacts of train commuters' access modes on road safety in Victoria, Australia. Macroscopic analyses of crash outcomes in each zone (i.e., Statistical Area Level 1) were performed using negative binomial (NB) and spatially lagged X negative binomial (SLXNB), accounting for potential indirect effects of mode shares in adjacent zones. This macroscopic analysis approach enabled the consideration of the safety effects across the network. The results showed that the SLXNB models outperformed the NB models. Commuting by train, either with walking or car as FLM access mode, was negatively associated with both total and severe crashes. In addition, commuting by train with feeder bus/tram access mode was negatively associated with severe crashes. Interestingly, commuting by train with cycling access mode was negatively associated with total crashes, with a larger effect when compared to walking and car access modes. In the recent decade, Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) has been introduced and widely installed across North America to improve pedestrians' safety at crosswalks. While the treatment has been reported to be effective in improving safety, relatively few studies have been conducted to explore the factors associated with its effectiveness. This study investigates the effect of road characteristics, environmental factors, and device specification on vehicles' yielding compliance, used as a surrogate measure of safety. Nineteen crosswalks within the City of Calgary were chosen for field study. An ordinary least squares regression model is applied to identify the factors that affect the compliance rate. It is found that type of road, daily traffic volume, posted speed limit, median, and rainy weather have significant impacts on the compliance rate. Besides, the result suggests using smaller size beacons and installing them above the pedestrian sign to improve safety to its fullest at RRFB-enhanced crosswalks. Cette etude examine l'effet des caracteristiques de la route, des facteurs environnementaux et de la specification du dispositif sur la conformite des conducteurs a ceder le passage, celle-ci etant utilisee comme mesure substitutive de securite. Dix-neuf passages pietonniers dans la ville de Calgary ont ete choisis pour une etude sur le terrain. Un modele de regression des moindres carres ordinaires est applique afin d'identifier les facteurs qui ont une incidence sur le taux de conformite. On a trouve que le type de route, le debit quotidien de circulation, la limite de vitesse affichee, la presence de terre-plein central et le temps pluvieux ont des effets considerables sur le taux de conformite. The focus on sustainable transportation has increased interest in promoting sustainable modes of transport, such as rail. Understanding train passengers' behaviors and perceptions is essential to enhance their travel experience and increase train ridership. Pre-boarding behaviors and perceptions are crucial in shaping the overall train travel experience. However, there are limited studies that have developed a systematic framework for investigating train passengers' pre-boarding behaviors and perceptions. This paper examines the train passenger's pre-boarding behaviors and perceptions about the station and platform. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach by developing a pre-boarding decision framework and combining it with questionnaire surveys to explore passengers' behaviors and perceptions on the platform before boarding. A total of 429 valid responses from Melbourne metro train users were used for analysis. Descriptive statistics and correlation techniques were applied to identify patterns and relationships. The findings reveal common pre-boarding behaviors and perceptions. Furthermore, the study uncovers factors influencing these behaviors and perceptions, such as passenger demographics, travel patterns, and specific trip characteristics. For example, carrying large items and travel frequency significantly impact passengers' travel experience in the pre-boarding phase. Waiting time, group travel, carrying small items, gender, and age group also significantly impact some pre-boarding behavior variables. Travel time, on the other hand, makes no significant impact on any of the pre-boarding variables that we examined. This research provides valuable insights for rail service operators and policymakers to enhance the pre-boarding experience, optimize station design, and improve passenger satisfaction. This paper investigates the critical determinants of mobile commerce (m-commerce) adoption in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam. A comprehensive review of the related literature leads to the development of a conceptual framework to better understand m-commerce adoption in organisations. This framework is then tested and validated using structural equation modelling on the data collected from 513 Vietnamese SMEs. The study shows that perceived benefits, perceived compatibility, perceived security, organisational readiness, organisational innovativeness, customer pressures, government support, and managers' IT knowledge are the critical determinants of m-commerce adoption. This study contributes to a better understanding of m-commerce adoption in developing countries, particularly in Vietnam.
