12. Learning to track environment state via predictive autoencoding

Abstract

This work introduces a neural architecture for learning forward models of stochastic environments. The task is achieved solely through learning from temporal unstructured observations in the form of images. Once trained, the model allows for tracking of the environment state in the presence of noise or with new percepts arriving intermittently. Additionally, the state estimate can be propagated in observation-blind mode, thus allowing for long-term predictions. The network can output both expectation over future observations and samples from belief distribution. The resulting functionalities are similar to those of a Particle Filter (PF). The architecture is evaluated in an environment where we simulate objects moving. As the forward and sensor models are available, we implement a PF to gauge the quality of the models learnt from the data., Comment: 10 pages. Written in March 2018. Not published

19. Presence for racial justice: disrupting racism through physician-patient communication.

Abstract

Context: Anti-Black racism is firmly rooted in US healthcare, but many clinicians do not have the tools and language to question their biases and address racism in clinical practice, eg biased communication practices such as non-compliance in medical documentation. Objective: Presence 5 for Racial Justice (P5RJ) leverages the Presence 5 patient-provider communication framework to identify anti-racism communication practices that support trusting relationships between physicians and Black patients and empower Black individuals in clinical care. Study design: For this multi-phased community-based participatory research (CBPR) overseen by an advisory board of clinicians and patients at four community clinics, we conducted a literature review, interviews with Black patients, clinician small-group discussions, and design thinking interviews with non-medical professionals. We mapped emergent communication practices to Presence 5 domains to create P5RJ. Setting: Four primary care clinics primarily serving Black patients in Oakland CA; Rochester NY; Leeds AL; Memphis TN. Population Studied: Total 113 participants (40 non-medical interviews, 37 Black patients interviewed, 12 advisory board members, 24 clinicians in discussion); 30 reviewed articles. Outcomes: Strategies on how providers, through communication and connection in the clinical visit, can navigate and address structural, institutional, and personally mediated forms of racism faced by Black patients. Results: P5RJ practices included: 1) Prepare with intention by reflecting on identity, bias, and power dynamics; and creating structures to address emergent bias and social determinants of health; 2) Listen intently and completely by using focused interpersonal listening without interruption and deep listening for racism impacts; give patients time and space to tell their story; 3) Agree on what matters most by having explicit conversations about patient goals, treatment comfort, consent, and referral planning; 4) Connect with the patients story by acknowledging socio-political factors influencing patient health and focusing on positive efforts/events to encourage patient agency; 5) Explore emotional cues by noticing and naming patient emotions and considering how racial trauma might influence these emotions. Conclusion: P5RJ practices offer strategies to reflect on clinician biases, address racism and known gaps in care for Black patients and promote health equity in their clinical care.

24. Building Three-Dimensional Differentiable Manifolds Numerically

Abstract

A method is developed here for building differentiable three-dimensional manifolds on multicube structures. This method constructs a sequence of reference metrics that determine differentiable structures on the cubic regions that serve as non-overlapping coordinate charts on these manifolds. It uses solutions to the two- and three-dimensional biharmonic equations in a sequence of steps that increase the differentiability of the reference metrics across the interfaces between cubic regions. This method is algorithmic and has been implemented in a computer code that automatically generates these reference metrics. Examples of three-manifolds constructed in this way are presented here, including representatives from five of the eight Thurston geometrization classes, plus the well-known Hantzsche-Wendt, the Poincare dodecahedral space, and the Seifert-Weber space., Comment: 37 pages, 10 figures, 12 Tables; v2 includes minor revisions and additions to agree with the final published version

Abstract

Model-free reinforcement learning (RL) is a powerful tool to learn a broad range of robot skills and policies. However, a lack of policy interpretability can inhibit their successful deployment in downstream applications, particularly when differences in environmental conditions may result in unpredictable behaviour or generalisation failures. As a result, there has been a growing emphasis in machine learning around the inclusion of stronger inductive biases in models to improve generalisation. This paper proposes an alternative strategy, inverse value estimation for interpretable policy certificates (IV-Posterior), which seeks to identify the inductive biases or idealised conditions of operation already held by pre-trained policies, and then use this information to guide their deployment. IV-Posterior uses MaskedAutoregressive Flows to fit distributions over the set of conditions or environmental parameters in which a policy is likely to be effective. This distribution can then be used as a policy certificate in downstream applications. We illustrate the use of IV-Posterior across a two environments, and show that substantial performance gains can be obtained when policy selection incorporates knowledge of the inductive biases that these policies hold.

Abstract

: Objectives: Alcohol is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in Australia and the consequences of alcohol consumption have enormous personal and social impacts. This study aimed to describe the principal diagnoses of emergency department (ED) presentations involving alcohol use in the previous 12 hours at eight hospitals in Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory, Australia. Methods: Twelve months’ data (1 July 2018 – 30 June 2019) were collected from eight EDs, including demographics, ICD‐10 codes, hospital location and self‐reported drinking in the preceding 12 hours. The ten most common ICD‐10 discharge codes were analysed based on age, sex and hospital geographic area. Results: ICD codes pertaining to mental and behavioural disorders due to alcohol use accounted for the highest proportion in most EDs. Suicide ideation/attempt was in the five highest ICD codes for all but one hospital. It was the second most common alcohol‐related presentation for both males and females. Conclusions: Alcohol plays a major role in a range of presentations, especially in relation to mental health and suicide. 50. Performing real magic(k) : the conjurer and audience in bizarre magick

Abstract

This submission draws together seven publications (four from the academic press and three from performance magic publications) and a covering document to set out an original contribution to knowledge in the field of bizarre magick. Bizarre magick is a sub-genre of performance magic and critical attention has been scarce in this field. The publications gathered here offer the only extended study of bizarre magick and performance that covers its inception as a form and how that form has found a place in modern mystery entertainment. This submission is informed through the author's practice as a bizarre magician. Following an initial study of the performers of Bizarre Magick, the publications included then focus mostly on detailed studies of specific aspects of the genre and its legacy; examining how bizarre magicians sought to re-enchant performance magic with the mysterious and the spiritual; discussing how practitioners of the bizarre draw heavily on fictionalised histories of science fiction, horror and the supernatural to create site-specific ritual and ceremony; and exploring the spectatorship of bizarre magick against wider issues of disenchantment in conventional magic performance practice. The three industry only works (offered an appendix) underline the author's relationship to the reflective in performance practice. The covering document sets out the core arguments that underpin the included publications, forming a cohesive approach to bizarre magick practice and its offshoots that allows us to read the genre as an integral and important performance form that has a lasting legacy in the field of performance magic. I argue that Bizarre Magick pulls at the very essence of magic practice and draws so heavily from a range of areas such as horror, the fantastic and the Gothic that it cannot be ignored as a form. In doing so, the combined research generates new possibilities for understanding and developing wider practices in performance magic and the notion of what it might mean to be a magician.
