Abstract

LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a next-generation dark matter direct detection experiment that will operate 4850 feet underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. Using a two-phase xenon detector with an active mass of 7 tonnes, LZ will search primarily for low-energy interactions with weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which are hypothesized to make up the dark matter in our galactic halo. In this paper, the projected WIMP sensitivity of LZ is presented based on the latest background estimates and simulations of the detector. For a 1000 live day run using a 5.6-tonne fiducial mass, LZ is projected to exclude at 90% confidence level spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross sections above 1.4 × 10-48cm2 for a 40 GeV/c2 mass WIMP. \ud Additionally, a 5σ discovery potential is projected, reaching cross sections below the exclusion limits of recent experiments. For spin-dependent WIMP-neutron(-proton) scattering, a sensitivity of 2.3 × 10−43 cm2 (7.1 × 10−42 cm2) for a 40 GeV/c2\ud mass WIMP is expected. With underground installation well underway, LZ is on track for commissioning at SURF in 2020.

Abstract

Various dark matter models predict annual and diurnal modulations of dark matter interaction rates in Earth-based experiments as a result of the Earth’s motion in the halo. Observation of such features can provide generic evidence for detection of dark matter interactions. This paper reports a search for both annual and diurnal rate modulations in the LUX dark matter experiment using over 20 calendar months of data acquired between 2013 and 2016. This search focuses on electron recoil events at low energies, where leptophilic dark matter interactions are expected to occur and where the DAMA experiment has observed a strong rate modulation for over two decades. By using the innermost volume of the LUX detector and developing robust cuts and corrections, we obtained a stable event rate of 2.3±0.2 cpd/keVee/tonne, which is among the lowest in all dark matter experiments. No statistically significant annual modulation was observed in energy windows up to 26 keVee. Between 2 and 6 keVee, this analysis demonstrates the most sensitive annual modulation search up to date, with 9.2σ tension with the DAMA/LIBRA result. We also report no observation of diurnal modulations above 0.2 cpd/keVee/tonne amplitude between 2 and 6 keVee.

Abstract

We propose a new technique for the calibration of nuclear recoils in large noble element dual-phase time projection chambers used to search for WIMP dark matter in the local galactic halo. This technique provides an $\textit{in situ}$ measurement of the low-energy nuclear recoil response of the target media using the measured scattering angle between multiple neutron interactions within the detector volume. The low-energy reach and reduced systematics of this calibration have particular significance for the low-mass WIMP sensitivity of several leading dark matter experiments. Multiple strategies for improving this calibration technique are discussed, including the creation of a new type of quasi-monoenergetic 272 keV neutron source. We report results from a time-of-flight based measurement of the neutron energy spectrum produced by an Adelphi Technology, Inc. Objective To test a conceptual model linking parental physical activity orientations, parental support for physical activity, and children's self-efficacy perceptions with physical activity participation. Participants and setting The sample consisted of 380 students in grades 7 through 12 (mean age, 14.0±1.6 years) and their parents. Data collection took place during the fall of 1996. Main outcome measures Parents completed a questionnaire assessing their physical activity habits, enjoyment of physical activity, beliefs regarding the importance of physical activity, and supportive behaviors for their child's physical activity. Students completed a 46-item inventory assessing physical activity during the previous 7 days and a 5-item physical activity self-efficacy scale. The model was tested via observed variable path analysis using structural equation modeling techniques (AMOS 4.0). Results An initial model, in which parent physical activity orientations predicted child physical activity via parental support and child self-efficacy, did not provide an acceptable fit to the data. Inclusion of a direct path from parental support to child physical activity and deletion of a nonsignificant path from parental physical activity to child physical activity significantly improved model fit. Standardized path coefficients for the revised model ranged from 0.17 to 0.24, and all were significant at the p<0.0001 level. Conclusions Parental support was an important correlate of youth physical activity, acting directly or indirectly through its influence on self-efficacy. Physical activity interventions targeted at youth should include and evaluate the efficacy of individual-level and community-level strategies to increase parents’ capacity to provide instrumental and motivational support for their children's physical activity.

Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate age and gender differences in objectively measured physical activity (PA) in a population-based sample of students in grades 1–12. Methods Participants (185 male, 190 female) wore a CSA 7164 accelerometer for 7 consecutive days. To examine age-related trends, students were grouped as follows: grades 1–3 (N = 90), grades 4–6 (N = 91), grades 7–9 (N = 96), and grades 10–12 (N = 92). Bouts of PA and minutes spent in moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and vigorous PA (VPA) were examined. Results Daily MVPA and VPA exhibited a significant inverse relationship with grade level, with the largest differences occurring between grades 1–3 and 4–6. Boys were more active than girls; however, for overall PA, the magnitudes of the gender differences were modest. Participation in continuous 20-min bouts of PA was low to nonexistent. Conclusion Our results support the notion that PA declines rapidly during childhood and adolescence and that accelerometers are feasible alternatives to self-report methods in moderately sized population-level surveillance studies.

29. Using objective physical activity measures with youth : How many days of monitoring are needed?

Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this study was to establish the minimal number of days of monitoring required for accelerometers to assess usual physical activity in children. Methods A total of 381 students (189 M, 192 F) wore a CSA 7164 uniaxial accelerometer for seven consecutive days. To examine age-related trends students were grouped as follows: Group I: grades 1-3 (N = 92); Group II: grades 4-6 (N = 98); Group III: grades 7-9 (N = 97); Group IV: grades 10-12 (N = 94). Average daily time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was calculated from minute-by-minute activity counts using the regression equation developed by Freedson et al. (1997). Results Compared with adolescents in grades 7 to 12, children in grades 1 to 6 exhibited less day-to-day variability in MVPA behavior. Spearman-Brown analysts indicated that between 4 and 5 d of monitoring would be necessary to a achieve a reliability of 0.80 in children, and between 8 and 9 d of monitoring would be necessary to achieve a reliability of 0.80 in adolescents. Within all grade levels, the 7-d monitoring protocol produced acceptable estimates of daily participation in MVPA (R = 0.76 (0.71-0.81) to 0.87 (0.84-0.90)). Compared with weekdays, children exhibited significantly higher levels of MVPA on weekends, whereas adolescents exhibited significantly lower levels of MVPA on weekends. Principal components analysis revealed two distinct time components for MVPA during the day for children (early morning, rest of the day), and three distinct time components for MVPA during the day for adolescents (morning, afternoon, early evening). Conclusions These results indicate that a 7-d monitoring protocol provides reliable estimates of usual physical activity behavior in children and adolescents and accounts for potentially important differences in weekend versus weekday activity behavior as well as differences in activity patterns within a given day.

Abstract

The rhizomes of Tacca chantrieri Andre (Taccaceae) have been used in Chinese medicines for the treatment of various diseases including high blood pressure, burns, gastric ulcers, enteritis, and hepatitis. The rhizomes of this plant have been found to contain a wide array of saponins and other compounds. The aims of the current study were to investigate the hypotensive activity of the ethanol extract (TCE) and both the crude (TCS) and purified saponin extract of T. chantrieri, and thus to characterize the hypotensive principles. TCE and TCS at the dose of 5 mg/kg caused hypotension and bradycardia in normotensive rats under pentobarbital anesthesia. Both TCE and TCS caused a decrease in the force and rate of contractions in isolated rat atria. The vasorelaxant activity of TCE and TCS could be demonstrated when tested on the aortic ring with endothelium intact. It is therefore implied that TCE and TCS exert both their hypotensive effect and bradycardia by affecting the heart as well as blood vessels. Separation of the crude saponin extract of T. chantrieri yielded four fractions with hypotensive activity. Fraction 1 contained diarylheptanoid glucosides, fraction 2 was a mixture of the glucosides and saponins, and fractions 3 and 4 contained spirostanol saponins. It is likely that in addition to the saponins, other constituents (diarylheptanoid glucosides) are involved in the hypotensive activity of T. chantrieri. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

46. Chloroplast gene expression in nuclear, photosynthetic mutants of maize.

Abstract

To assess possible roles of nuclear genes in chloroplast biogenesis, five photosynthetic mutants of maize with nuclear lesions were characterized with respect to their chloroplast proteins and chloroplast RNAs. Each mutant is deficient in a characteristic set of polypeptides. The high sensitivity and resolution of immunoblot analysis revealed that in no case are polypeptides completely missing. Mutants deficient in the cytochrome f/b6 or photosystem I complex show a coordinate reduction of all of the core subunits of these complexes such that the correct stoichiometries are maintained. RNA transcripts encoding most of the affected plastid‐encoded proteins were analyzed on Northern blots. In general, chloroplast RNAs in mutant seedlings were not altered in size or abundance, even when the corresponding protein was barely detectable. Therefore, in most cases the nuclear lesions act within the chloroplast at a post‐transcriptional level to prevent expression of chloroplast‐encoded polypeptides. One mutant, hcf‐38, does show striking alterations in the abundance and size of many chloroplast transcripts. The hcf‐38 locus might therefore encode a product that functions in chloroplast transcription or RNA processing.

47. Amniotic fluid bilirubin levels and the Rh-isoimmunized mother

Abstract

Chemical determinations of the amniotic fluid bilirubin level in 148 patients were studied. Three bilirubin zones were established (less than 0.035; 0.035 to 0.060; and greater than 0.060 mg. per cent). Forty-three mothers had a zone III bilirubin level and 40 of the offspring were Coombs positive. Thirty-four of these infants were seriously affected by Rh hemolytic disease. Nine of the 36 infants died from hemolytic disease. Only one of the 40 infants required no exchange transfusion. None of the mothers with a zone I or zone II bilirubin level was delivered of severely affected infants. The amniotic fluid bilirubin zones showed a correlation with maternal antibody titers.

Abstract

We report results from an extensive set of measurements of the β-decay response in liquid xenon. These measurements are derived from high-statistics calibration data from injected sources of both 3H and 14C in the LUX detector. The mean light-to-charge ratio is reported for 13 electric field values ranging from 43to491~V/cm, and for energies ranging from 1.5to145~keV.
