Methods: A group of medical students developed supplemental diabetes-related training/volunteer programs. The training modalities included an optional 7-session interprofessionally taught Diabetes Enrichment Elective and a 3-hour endocrinologist-led training session intended to prepare students for involvement in an inpatient DSMES volunteer program. The volunteer program provided the students with the opportunity to provide DSMES to patients with diabetes admitted to an academic medical center. Those participating in any of the stated programs were compared to those with no such training regarding confidence in providing DSMES using an optional online survey. The results were analyzed by using Mann–Whitney U test and descriptive analyses. Results: A total of 18 first-year medical students responded to the optional survey with a response rate of ~30% (10 of 33) among participants in any training/volunteer program. Osteoporosis represents a systemic imbalance in bone metabolism, augmenting the susceptibility to fractures among patients and emerging as a notable mortality determinant in the elderly population. It has evolved into a worldwide concern impacting the physical well-being of the elderly, imposing a substantial burden on both human society and the economy. Presently, the precise pathogenesis of osteoporosis remains inadequately characterized and necessitates further exploration. The advancement of osteoporosis is typically linked to the initiation of an inflammatory response. Cells in an inflammatory environment can cause inflammatory death including pyroptosis. Pyroptosis is a recently identified form of programmed cell death with inflammatory properties, mediated by the caspase and gasdermin families. It is regarded as the most inflammatory form of cell death in contemporary medical research. Under the influence of diverse cytokines, macrophages, and other immune cells may undergo pyroptosis, releasing inflammatory factors, such as IL-1β and IL-18. Numerous lines of evidence highlight the pivotal role of pyroptosis in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases, including cancer, intestinal disorders, hepatic conditions, and cutaneous ailments. Osteoporosis progression is frequently associated with inflammation; hence, pyroptosis may also play a role in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis to a certain extent, making it a potential target for treatment. This paper has provided a comprehensive summary of pertinent research concerning pyroptosis and its impact on osteoporosis. The notion proposing that pyroptosis mediates osteoporosis via the inflammatory immune microenvironment is advanced, and we subsequently investigate potential targets for treating osteoporosis through the modulation of pyroptosis.

IntroductionWater depth (WD) and snail abundance (SA) are two key factors affecting the growth of submersed aquatic plants in freshwater lake ecosystems. Changes in WD and SA drive changes in nutrients and other primary producers that may have direct or indirect effects on submersed plant growth, but which factor dominates the impact of both on aquatic plants has not been fully studied.MethodsTo investigate the dominant factors that influence aquatic plant growth in plateau lakes, a one-year field study was conducted to study the growth of three dominant submersed macrophyte (i.e., Vallisneria natans, Potamogeton maackianus, and Potamogeton lucens) in Erhai Lake.ResultsThe results show that, the biomass of the three dominant plants, P.maackianus, is the highest, followed by P.lucens, and V.natans is the lowest. Meanwhile, periphyton and snails attached to P.maackianus are also the highest. Furthermore, WD had a positive effect on the biomass of two submersed macrophyte species of canopy-type P.maackianus and P.lucens, while it had a negative effect on rosette-type V.natans. Snail directly inhibited periphyton attached on V.natans and thereby increasing the biomass of aquatic plants, but the effect of snails on the biomass of the other two aquatic plants is not through inhibition of periphyton attached to their plants.DiscussionThe dominant factors affecting the biomass of submersed macrophyte in Erhai Lake were determined, as well as the direct and indirect mechanisms of WD and snails on the biomass of dominant submersed macrophyte. Understanding the mechanisms that dominate aquatic plant change will have implications for lake management and restoration.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in attack time and lower limb biomechanics when performing fencing lunge with fencing shoes (FS) and commonly used court shoes (CS). Additionally, the study aimed to evaluate whether fencing shoes with a heel cup (FSH) could reduce lower limb impact. Thirteen female collegiate fencers who had participated in national-level competitions were recruited for this study. Participants performed the lunge on a human-shaped target while wearing FS, FSH, or CS in a randomized order. Biomechanical data were collected using a 3D motion analysis system synchronized with a force plate. A signal light, and an accelerometer were attached to the target’s head to initiate lunge movement and detect hit moment for calculating attack time. Attack time was significantly shorter when wearing FS (0.92 ± 0.05 s) and FSH (0.93 ± 0.07 s) compared to CS (0.96 ± 0.06 s). The maximum angular velocity of ankle plantarflexion in rear foot push-off phase was significantly slower when wearing FS and FSH than when wearing CS. The maximum knee posterior shear force, maximum knee flexion moment, and maximum ankle medial shear force during the front foot step phase were significantly greater when wearing FS than when wearing CS. These forces were significantly reduced or nearly significantly reduced when wearing FSH, and there were no significant differences compared to wearing CS. The maximum ankle medial shear force during the push-off phase in rear foot was the greatest when wearing FS but decreased significantly when using FSH. However, this force was still greater than when wearing CS. Wearing FS resulted in a higher loading rate (LR) on the front foot. This LR was reduced when a heel cup was used but still remained higher than when wearing CS. There were no significant differences in the forward extension of body, maximum ground reaction force, or center of pressure displacement during front foot step and rear foot push-off phases among the three shoe conditions. Wearing FS can enhance lunge performance, and the use of a heel cup can effectively reduce lower limb impact.

This study examined the effects of three 7-iron shaft weights on golf swing performance among golfers of varying skill levels. The study included 10 low-handicap (LH; 4.3 ± 2.4) and 10 high-handicap (HH; 29.1 ± 5.4) right-handed golfers as participants. The participants were randomly assigned 7-iron clubs with shaft weights categorized as light (77 g), medium (98 g), or heavy (114 g), and they performed test shots. Kinematic data were captured using a motion analysis system with nine infra-red high speed cameras; a force platform connected to this system was used to record weight transfer patterns. Performance variables were assessed using a FlightScope launch monitor. A two-way mixed-design analysis of variance was used to determine the significance of the performance differences among both participant groups and golf shaft weights. The results indicated that during the backswing, the LH group exhibited significantly greater maximum rightward upper torso rotation, maximum X-factor, and maximum right wrist hinge rotation than did the HH group. During the downswing, the LH group exhibited significantly greater maximum upper torso angular velocity and maximum right wrist angular velocity than did the HH group. Moreover, the LH group produced significantly higher ball speeds, longer shot distances, and lower launch angles than did the HH group. The shaft weight neither greatly altered the golf swing nor displaced the center of gravity of the golfers. The lighter shafts were observed to facilitate faster clubhead speeds and initial ball velocities, thereby resulting in longer shot distances, especially among LH golfers. Although significant differences in swing mechanics and performance exist between HH and LH golfers, lighter shafts can contribute to increased shot distances for all golfers.

The symmetry principle has significant guiding value in vehicle dynamics modeling and motion control. In complex driving scenarios, there are problems of low accuracy and large time delay in the trajectory tracking control of unmanned ground vehicles. In order to solve this problem and improve the motion control of unmanned ground vehicles, a vehicle coordination control method based on chaotic particle swarm optimization (CPSO) and model predictive control (MPC) algorithms is proposed. To achieve coordinated control of vehicle trajectory tracking and yaw stability, a model predictive controller was designed with the objective of minimizing trajectory tracking errors and yaw stability tracking errors. The required front wheel angle and yaw torque control variables were obtained by solving nonlinear constraint optimization. At the same time, considering the problems of low computational efficiency, high solving time, and local optimization in model predictive control, a chaotic particle swarm optimization algorithm is introduced to solve the optimization constraint problem within model predictive control, thereby effectively improving the computational efficiency and accuracy of the model predictive trajectory tracking controller. The results show that compared with MPC, the multi-objective function optimization solution time and vehicle lane changing time of CPSOMPC improved by 24.51% and 7.21%, respectively, which indicates the coordinated control method that combines the CPSO and MPC algorithms can effectively improve trajectory tracking performance while ensuring vehicle lateral stability.

Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) make it possible to evaluate and monitor the state of biodiversity over time at different spatial scales. Its development is led by the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON) to harmonize, consolidate and standardize biodiversity data from varied biodiversity sources. This document presents a mechanism to obtain baseline data to feed the Species Traits Variable Phenology or other biodiversity indicators by extracting species characters and structure names from morphological descriptions of specimens and classifying such descriptions using machine learning (ML).A workflow that performs Named Entity Recognition (NER) and Classification of morphological descriptions using ML algorithms was evaluated with excellent results. It was implemented using Python, Pytorch, Scikit-Learn, Pomegranate, Python-crfsuite, and other libraries applied to 106,804 herbarium records from the National Biodiversity Institute of Costa Rica (INBio). The text classification results were almost excellent (F1 score between 96% and 99%) using three traditional ML methods: Multinomial Naive Bayes (NB), Linear Support Vector Classification (SVC), and Logistic Regression (LR). Furthermore, results extracting names of species morphological structures (e.g., leaves, trichomes, flowers, petals, sepals) and character names (e.g., length, width, pigmentation patterns, and smell) using NER algorithms were competitive (F1 score between 95% and 98%) using Hidden Markov Models (HMM), Conditional Random Fields (CRFs), and Bidirectional Long Short Term Memory Networks with CRF (BI-LSTM-CRF).

IntroductionMacrophytes are essential for maintaining the health of shallow lake ecosystems, however, the driving and responsive relationship between ecological factors (such as seasonal changes and nutrition, etc.) and plant communities is not yet clear.MethodsIn this study, we conducted seasonal surveys of macrophyte community composition in lakes with different nutrient states, aiming to understand the incidence relation between macrophyte community diversity, seasonal changes and environmental factors.ResultsAccording to the classification criteria of comprehensive nutritional index, there were significant differences in the trophic status of the three lakes. Among them, the Xihu Lake has reached mild eutrophication with a TLI value of 56.33, both Cibi Lake and Haixihai Lake are mesotrophic with TLI value of 36.03 and 33.48, respectively. The results of diversity analysis showed a significant negative correlation between α-diversity (include Species richness, Shannon-Wiener index, Simpson index and Pielou index) and lake nutrient status. Among them, Xihu Lake showed the lowest α-diversity in all seasons, Haixihai Lake exhibited the middle α-diversity, Cibi Lake indicated the highest α-diversity. Non-metric multidimensional ordination showed that there were obvious spatial structures differences among the macrophyte communities in the three lakes. Macrophyte community composition in the three lakes was more similar in summer and autumn, but there was a wider gap in spring and winter. The redundancy analysis indicated distinct differences between diversity index and ecological factors, the eigenvalues of Axis 1 and Axis 2 being, respectively, 36.13% and 8.15%. Environmental factors could explain 44.8% of the total variation in macrophyte communities structure. Among these, nitrogen, phosphorus, water transparency and water temperature contributed 50.2%, 3.5%, 3.8% and 27.5%, respectively.ConclusionsIn summary, the community structure of macrophytes in plateau shallow lakes is co-regulated by seasons and nutrients.

The effect of biodiversity on ecosystem productivity has been a controversial issue in ecological research. The species richness–productivity relationship is highly variable in natural ecosystems, with a positive relationship being one of the most commonly observed relationships. Previous regional studies from terrestrial ecosystems have demonstrated that environmental gradients can regulate the species richness–productivity relationship. However, how this relationship varies in freshwater ecosystems across spatial environment gradients remains unclear. In this study, we propose that the species richness–productivity relationship can be modulated by the water depth. Here, we surveyed the submerged macrophyte community structure by establishing 24 transects and 642 quadrats in Erhai Lake, Yunnan Plateau, China. Our findings highlight that the species richness–productivity relationship gradually changed from slightly positive to strongly positive as the environment became more light-limited with the increasing water depth, supporting the stress-gradient hypothesis. The results from this study provide new insights into the biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships and in managing lake macrophyte communities and productivity.

Presentamos una paciente femenina de la raza blanca, de 50 años de edad, fumadora desde hace 30 años, que desde hacia 2 años presentaba disfonía y disnea laríngea, que fueron incrementando de intensidad y acude con cuadro clínico de gran disnea laríngea, disfonía, gran aumento de volumen de la región anterior del cuello, anorexia y pérdida de peso. Al examen físico en la laringoscopia indirecta, se constato tumoración exofítica, que deforma la laringe y ocupa sus tres pisos, con extensión a la base de lengua, región postcricoidea y senos piriformes, con gran disminución del espacio glótico y parálisis cordal bilateral por infiltración tumoral, en el cuello presentaba aumento de volumen de 7 cm que ocupa la región anterior del cuello desde el hueso hioides hasta la región supraesternal y lateralmente entre ambos músculos esternocleidomastoideos, que infiltra la piel circundante a nivel del cartílago tiroides, con un orificio fistuloso de 2.5 cm de diámetro. Se decidió realizar tratamiento quirúrgico: faringolaringectomía total circular ampliada a piel + Disección Radical de Cuello Izquierdo, Disección Funcional Derecha, Tiroidectomía total y cierre con colgajo de Bakanjian en marzo del año 2000, quedando tres estomas: un faringostoma, un esofagostoma y un traqueostoma. Para el cierre del Faringoesofosgostoma, se utilizó un colgajo de músculo dorsal ancho, el cual falló parcialmente dejando una fístula de 3.5 cm que cerró con el colgajo tubular bipediculado de Filatow. Desde el punto de vista oncológico, la paciente está controlada, e ingiere sus alimentos por la boca.

In order to improve the lateral stability and handling performance of in-wheel motor drive electric vehicles, a coordinated control method considering lateral stability and differential power-assisted steering performance is proposed. A vehicle dynamics model with two degrees of freedom is established, in which the influence of system disturbance is considered. At the same time, the effect of differential torque on vehicle power-assisted steering control was analyzed, and a differential power-assisted steering control method of vehicle was designed based on referenced steering wheel torque. In response to the coupling relationship and dynamic game problem between the lateral stability control system and the differential power-assisted steering control system, a coordinated control system with a vehicle lateral stability module and a differential power-assisted steering module was designed based on the Nash equilibrium game theory, achieving comprehensive optimization of multi-objective performance. Corresponding simulation tests were conducted in the co-simulation vehicle model, and the results show that the proposed coordinated control method can achieve the differential power-assisted steering control function of vehicle while ensuring lateral stability.

Abstract Spatiotemporal variation in community composition is of considerable interest in ecology. However, few studies have focused on seasonal variation patterns in taxonomic and functional community composition at the fine scale. As such, we conducted seasonal high‐density sampling of the submerged macrophyte community in Hongshan Bay of Erhai Lake in China and used the generalized dissimilarity model (GDM) to evaluate the effects of environmental factors and geographic distance on taxonomic and functional beta diversity as well as corresponding turnover and nestedness components. At the fine scale, taxonomic turnover and nestedness as well as functional turnover and nestedness showed comparable contributions to corresponding taxonomic and functional beta diversity, with different importance across seasons. All taxonomic and functional dissimilarity metrics showed seasonal variation. Of note, taxonomic beta diversity was highest in summer and lowest in winter, while functional beta diversity showed the opposite pattern. Taxonomic and functional turnover showed similar change patterns as taxonomic and functional beta diversity. Taxonomic nestedness was low in summer and high in winter. Functional nestedness was also lower in summer. These results suggest that under extreme environmental conditions, both turnover and nestedness can exist at the fine scale and seasonal community composition patterns in submerged macrophytes should be considered. Future investigations on community assembly mechanisms should pay greater attention to long‐term dynamic characteristics and functional information.

The impact of biodiversity on ecosystem functions and services remains a hot topic in ecology, especially under increasing biodiversity loss. Studies on the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning have identified two regulatory mechanisms: i.e., “niche complementarity” and “selection effect”. However, the relative importance of these mechanisms within communities and how they change along ecological gradients remain unclear. Moreover, most studies have focused on relatively stable ecosystems (e.g., forest, grassland), with limited attention paid to ecosystems with obvious seasonal changes, e.g., freshwater ecosystems. In this study we conducted a seasonal survey of submerged macrophyte communities to clarify the mechanisms of biodiversity on biomass productivity accounting for seasons and water depth. Our results showed that (1) seasonal variations of community indicators exhibited different trends along the water depth gradient. Biomass productivity showed high seasonal variation at intermediate depth while temporal beta diversity showed the opposite pattern. (2) Water depth not only inhibited biomass productivity directly but also indirectly by reducing species richness and enhancing temporal beta diversity. (3) The positive effect of species richness on biomass productivity was lower than the negative effect of evenness (path coefficients: 0.13 vs. 0.27), indicating that “selection effect” played a more important role in the relationship. (4) In shallow areas, the mechanism underlying the effects of biodiversity on biomass productivity was more from “selection effect”, whereas, in deep areas, the effects were related to both “niche complementarity” and “selection effect”. Our findings suggest that “niche complementarity” and “selection effect” are two complementary mechanisms underpinning the relationship between biodiversity and biomass productivity, and their relative importance varies with specific ecological gradients. Our results also provide a reference for studies on other freshwater organisms with analogous distribution patterns as submerged macrophytes with water depth. Scale dependence of the above relationship should be considered in future studies.

Micro steel pipe pile was used for existing foundation reinforcement and renovation. An energy micro pile-raft foundation equipped with heat exchange tube was constructed in silty clay. The diameter and the length of the energy micro pile are 160 mm and 13.0 m, respectively. A series of in situ thermal performance tests were carried out by controlling cycle heating, in which the inlet and outlet water temperatures, flow rate, and thermomechanical properties of the energy micro pile were measured. Combined with a numerical simulation method, the thermomechanical stresses and displacement of the raft were also analyzed and discussed. The energy micro pile-raft foundation was also analyzed for different combinations of energy piles and nonenergy piles in the group. Results show that the micro pile-raft foundation can provide sufficient heat exchange compared with other types of ground heat exchangers. Differential settlement at both the pile top and tip were observed for the groups that contained both energy piles and nonenergy piles.

Decreased underwater light availability is one of the most important environmental factors leading to the decline in submersed macrophytes in lakes. However, previous studies mostly focused on a relatively short time scale and lack data on the continuous monitoring of plant life history traits under different light conditions. The present experiment studied the growth, morphology and C/N metabolism of a representative submersed macrophyte, Vallisneria natans, in response to various light regimes (2.8%, 7.1%, 17.1%, and 39.5% ambient light intensity) over a period of 12 months. The results showed that the total biomass and ramet number increased with increased light intensity; in contrast, individual biomass, leaf number and maximum leaf length decreased with increased light intensity. The C/N metabolism indices of V. natans indicated that leaves were the most sensitive to light availability, stems were moderately sensitive, and roots were the least sensitive. V. natans grown in an extremely low-light environment exhibited decreased soluble carbohydrate (SC) and starch and increased free amino acid (FAA) and total nitrogen (TN) levels. The increasing function of the ramet number under different light regimes was fitted. The obtained maximum environmental capacity of the ramet number (K) and the days that the ramet number reached K/2 in each treatment are useful for lake V. natans restoration and seedling cultivation in similar limited-resource environments. Harvesting partial ramets properly and maintaining the ramet number near K/2 could ensure the maximum increase rate of the population to satisfy the demand of V. natans seedlings for lake restoration. The results obtained in this study can be used for lake water level management to achieve specific purposes during submerged macrophyte recovery, such as plant height elongation or plant population quantity expansion.

A large body of evidence suggests that the physical and chemical characteristics of the sediment in lakes that have undergone eutrophication have been significantly altered. However, the effects of alterations in sediments on submersed macrophytes remain unknown. In this study, we present the results of an outdoor experiment that examined how the growth and anchorage of the widespread submersed macrophyte Myriophyllum spicatum L. responded to the enrichment of organic matter in the sediments and whether water depth affects these responses. We found that low levels of enrichment with organic matter (≤7%) enhanced the growth of M. spicatum. In contrast, high levels of enrichment with organic matter (from 12 to 18%) slightly inhibited its growth. Although the anchorage force of M. spicatum slightly decreased with an increase in the content of organic matter in the sediment, it was much higher than the hydraulic drag force on plants at a relatively high current velocity, indicating that the plants were unlikely to be uprooted in these sediments. The water depth did not alter the responses of growth and anchorage of M. spicatum to enrichment with organic matter. Our results suggest that M. spicatum could be a potential species to restore eutrophic lakes, since it can grow well and anchor stably in sediments with relatively high organic matter and manage low light stress.

Trapanatans is one of the main species causing the swamping in the littoral zones of Erhai Lake. It commonly forms a dense canopy on the water surface in the growing season (June–September), which hampers the local water quality and habitat of submerged macrophytes, and releases nutrients to the water after death in autumn and winter, resulting in the deterioration of local water quality. At present, there are many and positive research studies on the short-term effects of harvesting water chestnut on water quality and aquatic plants, but long-term observation results are lacking. In response to the above problems, we studied responses of water quality and aquatic plant community to the removal of Trapa in littoral zone of a northern bay in Erhai from August 2014 to January 2017. This could be the first attempt to discover the long-term effects of floating-leaved vegetation management in the freshwater ecosystem. The results showed that the artificial removal of Trapa significantly improved the local water quality in the growing season, for example, the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), dissolved nitrogen (DN), total phosphorus (TP), and dissolved phosphorus (DP) in the non-Trapa zone (NTZ) were much lower than the concentrations of those in the adjacent Trapa zone (TZ). And the biomass of aquatic macrophyte community (BAMC) was significantly increased in the NTZ, up to the maximum value of about 21 kg/m2 in fresh weight. However, the diversity indexes of the community in the NTZ declined. Therefore, we suggested that although the removal of Trapa improved the water quality and increased the productivity of the submerged aquatic plant community, it reduced the species diversity of the aquatic plant community in the long run. This is another issue that we need to pay attention to in the later management in Erhai Lake.

Water level plays a crucial role in the function and social services of lakes. Studies on historical changes in water level and its eco-social function can give insights into future water conservation and management. In this study, interannual and seasonal changes in the water level of Erhai Lake were analyzed from 1952 to 2019 to explore water level responses to human activities and climate change. The time series was divided into three distinct periods, i.e., 1952–1971, 1972–2003, and 2004–2019. Results showed that the water level and fluctuation amplitude differed among the different time periods, i.e., 1965.8 and 1.3 m (1952–1971), 1964.4 and 1.9 m (1972–2003), and 1965.2 and 1.2 m (1972–2003), respectively. The construction and operation of a hydroelectric power plant along the outlet river significantly decreased the water level and increased fluctuation amplitude in the 1972–2003 period. Since 2004, due to the implementation of local government water level management laws for Erhai Lake, the water level has remained relatively high, with moderate fluctuation amplitude. In addition, compared to the increase in water level amplitude in response to increased wet season (May–October) precipitation in the 1952–1971 period, response sensitivity increased in the 1972–2003 period, but became non-significant in the 2004–2019 period. In regard to the multi-timescale relationship between water level and precipitation, precipitation decreased by 89 mm in the 2004–2019 period compared with that from 1952 to 1971, and artificial water-level regulation resulted in a time-lag of 2, 3–3.5, and 4 months between water level and precipitation during the 1952–1971, 1972–2003, and 2004–2019 periods, respectively. The eco-social aspects of changes in water level are discussed below, and water level regulation from an ecological perspective is recommended to gain economic returns in the future.

Periphyton is an ecological essential in freshwater lakes and rivers. Its abundance and biomass are very dynamic in various habitats and subject to various factors, for example, nutrient and light. Following flooding events, the transitional area adjacent to a river inlet and the shallow lake generates diverse habitats for periphyton with gradients in current velocity, suspended matters, nutrients, and light, which would strongly shape the growth and community of periphyton. In this study, three sampling sites were established around a river inlet in Erhai Lake, China, and a field survey was conducted in the sites from April to August (flooding seasons) in 2019 to investigate the abundance and biomass of periphyton and explore influential factors. The results showed that three study areas have different gradients of current velocity depending on the distance to the river inlet, thereby regulating the concentrations of nutrients and suspended matters, which strongly affected the periphyton community; to be specific, the biomass of periphyton was inhibited by the concentration of suspended matters and high concentrations of silicate mainly reduced the diversity of periphyton. Our results imply that the study on the driving factors of periphyton could help to understand its community assembly mechanism and biomass and species composition of periphyton can provide some reference for trophic state of the lake.

During the gears meshing process, the Time Varying Meshing Stiffness (TVMS) is affected by the relative displacement. An algorithm of TVMS considering two translational degrees of freedom is proposed. The algorithm is based on the potential energy method for the ideal involute spur gear. The translational freedom is introduced into the calculation of TVMS by considering the influence of translational freedom on the angles in gear meshing. The effect of gears relative displacement on the maximum, mean and contact ratio of TVMS is studied. The results show that TVMS is most sensitive to the relative translation of gears along the vertical direction of the meshing line, and is least sensitive to the relative translation of gears along the direction of the meshing line. In the vertical direction of the meshing line, the 0.1 mm relatively movement can cause 0.93% change of the mean of TVMS.

Accurate and reliable vehicle state estimation results are very significant to the active safety, energy optimization, and the intelligent control of vehicles. In this paper, to improve the accuracy and adaptability of vehicle running state estimation, the vehicle running states fused estimation strategy is presented for in-wheel motor drive electric vehicle using the Kalman filters and tire force compensation method. The concept of electric drive wheel model (EDWM) is developed and deduced, and then, considering that the EDWM is a nonlinear model with an unknown input, the design concept of high-order sliding mode observer is used to construct the state space equation of longitudinal force. To improve the accuracy and the reliability of vehicle state estimation, an overall estimation strategy with information fusion and tire force compensation is designed, in which a weighted square-root cubature Kalman filter with an adaptive covariance matrix of measurement noise is developed for observer design. Finally, the simulations in CarSim-Simulink co-simulation model and experiments are carried out, and the effectiveness of the designed estimation strategy is validated.

The roles that adventitious roots play in flooding tolerance have been well-studied in willows, while which of the maximum height of adventitious roots and the abundance of adventitious roots in willows is more important for their flooding tolerance is not well known. In this study, we analyzed the effects of adventitious roots on the flooding tolerance of Salix cavaleriei by comparing the maximum height of adventitious roots and the abundance of adventitious roots in dead and live willows along a flooding gradient from 0 to 180 cm in Lake Erhai, China. The results showed that willow mortality increased drastically when the water depth suffered by willows exceeded 100 cm. Live willows developed more adventitious roots and produced them higher on the trees compared with dead willows, however, the pest infestation percentage of the dead willows was larger. Additionally, both the maximum height and the abundance of adventitious roots in live willows were significantly correlated with water depth, whereas in dead willows, these variables were not significantly correlated or only weakly correlated with water depth. The results indicate that producing adventitious roots higher on the trees may be more important than developing abundant adventitious roots lower on the trees when S. cavaleriei is subjected to high flooding levels. Our data highlight that a faster adventitious root response promotes this species’ survival under flood stress, although pest infestation accounts for a small percentage of willow mortality. Accordingly, we should choose those willows that can develop more abundant adventitious roots and higher on the stems to plant in regions with abrupt water-level fluctuations.

The safety of drinking water is constantly being evaluated. In the last few decades, however, many drinking waters sources in the world, including in China, have undergone serious eutrophication and consequently water quality deterioration due to anthropogenic induced stressors such as elevated external nutrient inputs. In this study, we used the state-of-the-art complex, dynamic, mechanistic model GOTM-FABM-PCLake (a coupled one-dimensional hydrodynamic-lake ecosystem model) to quantitatively assess the impacts of external nutrient loading on the temperate Jihongtan reservoir in Shandong Province, China. Simulated values of all variables targeted in calibration (water temperature, dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chlorophyll a) agreed well with observations throughout the entire calibration and validation period and generally mimicked seasonal dynamics and inter-annual variations as found in the monitoring data. A series of scenarios, representing changed external nutrient loadings (both increasing and decreasing compared to the current nutrient load), were set up to quantify the effects on the reservoir water quality. Changes relative to the current external nutrient load had a significant effect on the simulated TN and TP concentrations in the reservoir. Our impact assessment indicate that TN will meet the Chinese water quality requirements of the water source (Class III) when the external nitrogen load is reduced by 70%, whereas TP will meet the requirements even if the external phosphorus load is increased by 100% relative to current loads. The model predicts progressively higher summer and autumn phytoplankton biomasses in the scenarios with increasing external phosphorus loading and potential toxic cyanobacteria will become more dominant at the expense of diatoms and other algae. Strict control of the external nutrient loading is therefore needed to maintain good drinking water quality in the reservoir.

Effective management of infectious osteomyelitis relies on timely microorganism identification and appropriate antibiotic therapy. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) carry protein and genetic information accumulated rapidly in the circulation upon infection. Rat osteomyelitis models infected by Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli were established for the present study. Serum EVs were isolated 3 days after infection. The size and number of serum EVs from infected rats were significantly higher than those from controls. In addition, bacterial aggregation assay showed that the S. aureus and E. coli formed large aggregates in response to the stimulation of serum EVs from S. aureus-infected and E. coli-infected rats, respectively. Treatment of EVs-S. epidermidis led to large aggregates of S. epidermidis and E. coli, whereas stimulation of EVs-P. aeruginosa to large aggregates of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. To evaluate the changes in EVs in osteomyelitis patients, 28 patients including 5 S. aureus ones and 21 controls were enrolled. Results showed that the size and number of serum EVs from S. aureus osteomyelitis patients were higher than those from controls. Further analysis using receiver operating characteristic curves revealed that only the particle size might be a potential diagnostic marker for osteomyelitis. Strikingly, serum EVs from S. aureus osteomyelitis patients induced significantly stronger aggregation of S. aureus and a cross-reaction with P. aeruginosa. Together, these findings indicate that the size and number of serum EVs may help in the diagnosis of potential infection and that EVs-bacteria aggregation assay may be a quick test to identify infectious microorganisms for osteomyelitis patients.

In order to improve the extension mileage and ensure the yaw stability of the distributed drive electric vehicle simultaneously, a multi-objective coordination control strategy is presented in this paper, in which the optimal vehicle-state estimation method and the orientated tire force distribution method are designed. The longitudinal force estimation is designed using the unknown input observer Kalman filter, a novel yaw rate and a vehicle sideslip angle estimation scheme is proposed by an observer error compensation method. A multi-objective hierarchical vehicle motion control strategy is developed to monitor the yaw stability and improve the energy efficiency of vehicle in real time. In the upper layer controller design, a sliding mode controller is proposed to track the desired yaw rate. In the lower layer controller design, the orientated tire force distribution scheme is presented to improve the motor efficiency and reduce the energy loss caused by vehicle steering resistance while ensuring the yaw stability of vehicle. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed estimation method and the global coordination control strategy is validated by simulation in CarSim-Simulink joint platform and road test.

Abstract Ecological processes are generally scale-dependent and there is little consensus about the relative importance of deterministic versus stochastic processes in driving patterns of biological diversity. We investigated how the relationship between functional dispersion and environmental gradients changes with spatial scale in subtropical freshwater lakes. The functional alpha and beta dispersions of all the tested traits were significantly under-dispersed across spatial scales and along environmental gradients. Results showed more functional similarity within communities in leaf dry mass content and flowering duration but less functional turnover among communities in all the tested traits at regional scales (Yunnan-Guizhou plateau and the middle and low reaches of the Yangtze River). The strengths and directions of environmental effects on the functional alpha and beta dispersions depended on the selected traits, diversity metrics and spatial scales. Surprisingly, broad-scale factors - elevation and water transparency - decreased the functional turnover for most traits along the gradients, whereas fine-scale factors - water depth - produced the opposite patterns along the gradient, depending on the trait selected. Our study highlights the dominant role of deterministic assembly processes in structuring the local functional composition and governing the spatial functional turnover of macrophyte communities across multiple spatial scales.

Objective: Our purpose was to determine the maternal risks associated with failed attempt at vaginal birth after cesarean compared with elective repeat cesarean delivery or successful vaginal birth after cesarean.Study Design: From 1989 to 1998 all patients attempting vaginal birth after cesarean and all patients undergoing repeat cesarean deliveries were reviewed. Data were extracted from a computerized obstetric database and from medical charts. The following three groups were defined: women who had successful vaginal birth after cesarean, women who had failed vaginal birth after cesarean, and women who underwent elective repeat cesarean. Criteria for the elective repeat cesarean group included no more than two previous low transverse or vertical incisions, fetus in cephalic or breech presentation, no previous uterine surgery, no active herpes, and adequate pelvis. Predictor variables included age, parity, type and number of previous incisions, reasons for repeat cesarean delivery, gestational age, and infant weight. Outcome variables included uterine rupture or dehiscence, hemorrhage >1000 mL, hemorrhage >2000 mL, need for transfusion, chorioamnionitis, endometritis, and length of hospital stay. The Student t test and the chi(2) test were used to compare categoric variables and means; maternal complications and factors associated with successful vaginal birth after cesarean were analyzed with multivariate logistic regression, allowing odds ratios, adjusted odds ratios, 95% confidence intervals, and P values to be calculated.Results: A total of 29,255 patients were delivered during the study period, with 2450 having previously had cesarean delivery. Repeat cesarean deliveries were performed in 1461 women (5.0%), and 989 successful vaginal births after cesarean delivery occurred (3.4%). Charts were reviewed for 97.6% of all women who underwent repeat cesarean delivery and for 93% of all women who had vaginal birth after cesarean. Vaginal birth after cesarean was attempted by 1344 patients or 75% of all appropriate candidates. Vaginal birth after cesarean was successful in 921 women (69%) and unsuccessful in 424 women. Four hundred fifty-one patients undergoing cesarean delivery were deemed appropriate for vaginal birth after cesarean. Multiple gestations were excluded from analysis. Final groups included 431 repeat cesarean deliveries and 1324 attempted vaginal births after cesarean; in the latter group 908 were successful and 416 failed. The overall rate of uterine disruption was 1.1% of all women attempting labor; the rate of true rupture was 0.8%; and the rate of hysterectomy was 0.5%. Blood loss was lower (odds ratio, 0.5%; 95% confidence interval, 0.3-0.9) and chorioamnionitis was higher (odds ratio, 3.8%; 95% confidence interval, 2.3-6.4) in women who attempted vaginal births after cesarean. Compared with women who had successful vaginal births after cesarean, women who experienced failed vaginal births after cesarean had a rate of uterine rupture that was 8.9% (95% confidence interval, 1.9-42) higher, a rate of transfusion that was 3.9% (95% confidence interval, 1.1-13.3) higher, a rate of chorioamnionitis that was 1.5% (95% confidence interval, 1.1-2.1) higher, and a rate of endometritis that was 6.4% (95% confidence interval, 4.1-9.8) higher.Conclusion: Patients who experience failed vaginal birth after cesarean have higher risks of uterine disruption and infectious morbidity compared with patients who have successful vaginal birth after cesarean or elective repeat cesarean delivery. Because actual numbers of morbid events are small, caution should be exercised in interpreting results and counseling patients. More accurate prediction for safe, successful vaginal birth after cesarean delivery is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Leaf soluble carbohydrates (SC), free amino acids (FAA), starch, total phenolics (TOPH), carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) stoichiometry of 24 aquatic macrophyte species were studied at 52 selected sites in eastern, 31 sites in southwestern and 6 sites in western China, including 12 submerged, 6 floating-leaved, 4 emergent and 2 free-floating macrophytes. The leaf stoichiometric characteristics differed significantly among the plant species of the four different life forms, the lowest C content occurring in submerged macrophytes and the highest N content in free-floating macrophytes. Overall, though the variance explained by the linear regression models was low, the C and N contents decreased toward the northern latitudes, the C content and the C:N ratios increased with increasing altitude. Multiple regressions revealed that the stoichiometric characteristics of submerged macrophytes varied significantly across the large spatial and climatic gradients and among the species studied. For floating-leaved and emergent macrophytes, no correlation between climate factors and SC, FAA, starch, TOPH, C, and N contents and C:N ratio was observed. For free-floating macrophytes, the TOPH content was markedly positively correlated with latitude and altitude. We conclude that the C and N contents related more closely to latitude, altitude or mean annual air temperature than did the C and N metabolic indicators for the submerged macrophytes, while the relationships with the metabolic indicators turned out to be insignificant for most species of the other life forms. The results helped us to identify species with significant physiological plasticity across geographic and climatic gradients in China, and such information is useful when conducting restoration of lost aquatic plants in different climate regions.

Light is a major limiting resource in aquatic ecosystems and numerous studies have investigated the response of submerged macrophytes to low light conditions. However, few studies have tested whether different light response strategies can also have consequences for macrophyte distribution along different littoral slopes in lakes, which are known to affect macrophyte biomass due to differences in drag forces and sediment characteristic. In this study, we tested (1) whether two macrophyte species of different growth forms (canopy-forming: Potamogeton maackianus, rosette-type: Vallisneria natans) differ in their response strategies to low light conditions and (2) how these responses influence their distribution along different basin slopes in the mesotrophic Lake Erhai, China. We hypothesized that the canopy-forming species responds to low light conditions at deeper sites by stem elongation while the rosette-type species increases its shoot chlorophyll content. As a consequence, P. maackianus should have a higher susceptibility to drag forces and thus prevail at sites with lower slopes. Sites with higher slopes should offer a niche for rosette-type species like V. natans that can better withstand drag forces. We surveyed the distribution and abundance of the two macrophyte species at 527 sampling points along 97 transects in Lake Erhai and measured their height, leaf and stem/rhizome biomass, and leaf chlorophyll a content at different water depths. Our results confirmed stem elongation as a strategy to low light conditions by the canopy-forming species P. maackianus, while V. natans produced more chlorophyll a per shoot biomass at deeper sites to tolerate shading. As hypothesized, these alternative response strategies to low light conditions resulted in a trade-off regarding the plants ability to grow at different basin slopes. P. maackianus was dominant at sites with low-moderate slope (0–4%) and low-moderate water depth (2–4 m), while sites with high basin slope (4–7%) combined with moderate-high water depth (3–5 m) were dominantly colonized by V. natans. The latter habitat thus represents a potential refuge for rosette-type macrophyte species that are often outcompeted when shading increases during eutrophication.
