Emotional education helps to develop emotional intelligence skills and to bolster teachers' overall well-being., Aims: to gauge the effectiveness of the programme designed to enhance the emotional intelligence, life satisfaction, life orientation, and work well-being of teaching staff. A quasi-experimental design was employed with an experimental group and a control group, using pre-test and post-test to measure changes., Method: 425 teachers of basic general education from Ecuador took part. The experimental group participated in an intervention programme in emotional intelligence during one term, while the control group were not subject to any intervention. An array of instruments were used to measure the variables of interest before and after intervention., Results: significant improvements emerged in emotional intelligence factors in the experimental group compared to the control group. Significant increases were seen in life satisfaction, optimism, feeling energy, enthusiasm, and immersion, and there was reduced pessimism. Women improved more in emotional perception, while men evidenced greater improvement in understanding and emotional regulation. This scoping review aims to map the current understanding of pre-service teachers' beliefs about ICT, identify critical research gaps, and provide actionable insights for teacher education policy and practice. A comprehensive search of seven electronic databases yielded 1366 studies, of which 277 were included. The review identified seven key themes, including a predominant focus on general ICT beliefs and the limited exploration of cutting-edge technologies or regional variations. Quantitative methods dominated the research landscape, often employing standardized instruments like the Technology Attitude Scale. The findings highlight the need for greater emphasis on underrepresented regions, innovative technologies, and qualitative methodologies to deepen contextual understanding. Educators working with students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) should be utilizing evidence-based practices (EBPs) that have been identified for this group of students to promote better outcomes. Physical education (PE) teachers are highly likely to work with students with ASD in educational settings, yet little is known about their level of training and confidence in implementing EBPs for students with ASD. This study used survey methodology to ask PE teachers about their training in EBPs and their perceived confidence in implementing such practices. The results indicate that, although there was little reported training on individual EBPs specific to students with ASD, PE teachers reported feeling relatively confident in supporting students with ASD. Research on educational simulations has attempted to decipher the simulation-based learning (SBL) process by examining factors that facilitate and impede this process. In the current study, we examined the role of SBL participants' hindrances, in particular their experience of anxiety or fear, which we view using the framework of leaving one's comfort zone. Departure from one's comfort zone has never been studied in the context of SBL in teacher education. A quantitative analysis of data collected via a questionnaire on Simulation Learning Outcomes in Teacher Education (SLOTE) revealed a model in which the hindrance variable potentially mediated all of the relationships between the background variables and the simulation learning outcomes (i.e., communication skills and collaborative learning insights). Background: School-based substance use prevention is important, yet many educators are not trained in the curriculums. The purpose of this study was to assess changes in educators' knowledge about substances and confidence in delivering drug education before and after participating in educator trainings, as well as overall perceptions of the trainings, for three curriculums: tobacco, cannabis, and all drugs prevention., Methods: We conducted one-arm pre-post analyses evaluating educators' changes in knowledge about products and confidence to deliver curriculums. A total of 1064, 648, and 171 educators participated in the trainings and completed surveys (June 2021-November 2023) about drug knowledge (closed-ended, three items for tobacco, five for cannabis), confidence to deliver curriculums (Likert, four items for all trainings), and perceptions of the trainings (open-ended, four items for all trainings). Paired-sample t-tests and McNemar tests of paired proportions were conducted for the matched sample. Two coders double-coded open-ended responses to identify key themes., Results: The training for tobacco was associated with pre-post improvements on all knowledge questions (p's ≤ 0.001). Trainings for all three curriculums were associated with pre-post improvements for all confidence questions (p's < 0.007). Participants qualitatively reported wanting longer trainings with more in-depth content and navigation of materials., Implications for School Health Policy, Practice, and Equity: Our findings suggest that trainings are a promising method that may improve the knowledge and confidence of educators who deliver drug education curriculums., Conclusions: Educator trainings will likely benefit from detailed content on various substances, interactive activities, and show educators how to tailor curriculums based on their students' specific needs., (© 2025 American School Health Association.) more...

Issue Addressed: While physical activity, sleep and sun safety (PASS) have been identified as important modifiable health behaviours and schools and teachers have been identified as vital for health promotion and primary prevention; little is known about how initial teacher education programs across Australia and New Zealand (NZ) are preparing future teachers to deliver PASS-related curriculum. This study investigated teacher educators' insights on their programs and their graduate's preparedness to plan and teach PASS education., Methods: Teacher educators (n = 98) from Australia and NZ completed a 30-item electronic survey. Quantitative tests were used to explore differences in the data., Results: Consistently, time spent on physical activity far outweighed sun safety and sleep with many programs having little or no sleep or sun safety content. Of concern, many indicated they did not agree, or know if their graduates were confident to plan and teach physical activity (28%), sun safety (42%) or sleep (75%) lessons, nor were they aware of the related guidelines, health benefits and risks., Conclusions: Findings reveal significant variance in what is being offered in Australian and NZ initial teacher education programs. Findings highlight potential gaps in graduate's knowledge of various health behaviours and confidence to plan and teach related content and their preparedness for health promotion. Issue Addressed: Health literacy is an important asset for adolescents to develop through engagement in schooling and curriculum. The few studies that have focused on teachers, health literacy pedagogies and assessment, show that teachers find it difficult to enhance students' critical health literacy levels and to measure students' health literacy knowledge and capabilities using valid models. The aim of this study was to develop a longer-term PD programme for secondary school teachers to enhance their ability to plan for critical health literacy learning and to co-design with teachers a curricular model for assessing health literacy., Methods: Two face-to-face (F2F) PD sessions and two online PD sessions were scheduled with three participating specialist Health and Physical Education (HPE) teachers, seven HPE programmes were deductively analysed using Nutbeam's health literacy hierarchy and the Australian Curriculum: HPE outcomes and content., Results: Analysis showed that interactive learning activities were dominant (64%), compared with functional (4%) and critical learning activities (4%). The co-designed curriculum model for measuring student health literacy was also developed for use in Australian schools. The resultant rubric is informed by Nutbeam's model, Broder et al.'s definition and Bloom's taxonomy., Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first ongoing teacher PD programme that has embedded co-design processes for teachers and researchers to design a curricular health literacy assessment model for Australian and international HPE programmes. Assisting pre-service teachers in developing readiness for interdisciplinary teaching has been recognized as a crucial direction in teacher education in China. However, there is currently a lack of reliable instrument to measure the readiness. We developed and validated an Interdisciplinary Teaching Readiness Scale (ITRS) for pre-service teachers to fill the gap. We utilized literature review and interdisciplinary teaching competence framework to develop the initial item pool for the ITRS. Data were collected from 234 pre-service teachers at S Normal University (Sample A) for item analysis and exploratory factor analysis (EFA), followed by data collection from 543 pre-service teachers in China (Sample B) for confirmatory factor analysis(CFA), convergent validity, discriminant validity, and reliability testing. Item analysis on Sample A data using the critical ratio method revealed discriminative items, indicating no need for item deletion. PCA showed that the ITRS has a three-factor structure, explaining 77.282% of the total variance. CFA on Sample B demonstrated a good model fit (GMIN/DF = 4.189, RMSEA = 0.077, GFI = 0.852, AGFI = 0.821, NFI = 0.939, RFI = 0.932, CFI = 0.953, IFI = 0.953). Analysis of the AVE for each dimension indicated good convergent and discriminant validity. Reliability testing revealed a high overall Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.972 for the ITRS, indicating good internal consistency. Ultimately, we confirmed that the ITRS consists of three factors(including interdisciplinary teaching knowledge structure readiness, interdisciplinary teaching skills readiness, interdisciplinary teaching attitudes readiness) and 24 items. In conclusion, the ITRS that has been developed shows great potential for promoting the professional development of pre-service teachers, evaluating the effectiveness of teacher education programs, and supporting the development of educational policy. The extensive utilization of this instrument will help to comprehensively assess the overall level of pre-service teachers' readiness for interdisciplinary teaching and to promote the professional growth of pre-service teachers in China. Introduction: We evaluated the Informed Health Choices secondary school intervention in a cluster randomized trial in Rwanda. The intervention was effective in helping students to think critically about health. In parallel to the trial, we conducted a process evaluation to assess factors affecting the implementation, impacts, and scale-up of the intervention., Methods: We used a mixed methods approach that included quantitative and qualitative methods. We collected quantitative data from teachers to evaluate the teacher training and each lesson. We conducted focus group discussions with students (n=10) and their parents/guardians (n=5). We conducted lesson observations (n=16) and key informant interviews with teachers (n=10) and school administrators (n=10) from intervention schools and policymakers (n=2). We analyzed the quantitative data using descriptive statistics. We used framework analysis and thematic content analysis to analyze the qualitative data., Results: Teachers noted that the teacher training supported their delivery of the intervention and that they made only small adaptations to fit student, teacher, or contextual needs. Students reported obtaining important skills, including recognizing health claims, understanding the need for research, and "thinking twice" before deciding. Participants saw the design of the intervention, students' and teachers' motivation, and school and home support as key facilitators for the implementation and impact of the intervention. Implementation barriers identified included the content of the lessons not being included in national examinations, competing priorities, and time constraints. Participants identified several factors that could facilitate intervention scale-up, including the need for the skills taught in the lessons and compatibility of the intervention with the national curriculum., Conclusion: We found that it was feasible to implement the intervention in Rwandan secondary schools and that students benefited from the intervention. Improving teachers' knowledge and skills in dealing with adolescent suicidality may be important for prevention. We evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of a theatre-based gatekeeper teacher training for adolescent suicide prevention (SPES project). Self-reported changes in knowledge and self-efficacy were also investigated. Based on a quasi-experimental repeated measures design, secondary schools were invited to participate in one of two intervention groups (theatre workshop or attending a theatre performance) or a control group (no intervention). Assessments were conducted prior to the intervention, shortly following it and 3 months later. Attendance and retention were indicators of feasibility. Knowledge and self-efficacy were assessed longitudinally using anonymous questionnaires. Data were analyzed using linear mixed models. 191 teachers (84.3% women; Mage = 46.8, SD = 9.8) participated in the study (63 workshop, 66 performance and 62 control group). Attendance was 92% in the workshop group and 94% in the performance group. The retention rate after three months was 51% in the workshop group and 53% in the performance group. Teachers in both groups reported greater knowledge of adolescent suicide ( p < 0.001) and higher gatekeeper self-efficacy ( p < 0.05) than the control group. The SPES project was found to be feasible and acceptable. Early career teacher attrition disrupts school continuity, precludes many of those who leave from achieving expertise, and drains economic resources from school systems. In a longitudinal cluster randomized controlled trial (k = 8, n = 98), we examined the impact of a 9-week meditation-based intervention on undergraduate preservice teachers' rates of attrition from teaching approximately 4 years later. The odds of attrition among intervention group participants 3 years into their teaching careers were significantly reduced by at least 77.0% regardless of modeling approach (Odds ratios = 0.13-0.23, ps ≤ 0.013) compared to teacher education as usual controls. In benefit-cost analyses, we estimated that for every $1 spent on the intervention, hiring districts saved $3.43 in replacement teacher costs. Teacher-Child Interaction Training-Universal (TCIT-U) is effective for increasing teachers' use of strategies that promote positive child behavior; however, the exact mechanisms of change are unknown. Using a cluster randomized control trial in a sample of 410 racially- and ethnically-diverse children (M age  = 41.73 months; 50% White, 45% Black/African-American, 4% Multiracial, 1% Asian; 59% Hispanic; 87% with disabilities) taught by 102 teachers from 38 classrooms in eight schools, we attempted to identify these mechanisms of action. Results identified two mechanisms of action by which TCIT-U worked to benefit children in this sample. Enrollment in TCIT-U helped teachers learn to provide labeled praise for child behaviors (as measured by observer ratings) and appropriately follow through on commands (as measured by observer ratings) they issued, which subsequently caused children to experience better socioemotional functioning (as measured by on the teacher-reported Devereux Early Childhood Assessment) and fewer externalizing problems (as measured by the Sutter-Eyberg Student Behavior Inventory - Revised). Specifically, being in the TCIT-U intervention predicted more teacher use of labeled praise at post-treatment, which predicted lower child SESBI-Intensity scores at 1-month follow-up (Indirect Effect B = -1.97, SE = 0.73, p < .01). Additionally, being in the TCIT-U intervention predicted teacher follow-up on a greater proportion of direct commands post-treatment, which was associated with fewer student externalizing problem behaviors post-treatment (Indirect Effect B = -1.47, SE = 0.70, p = .04) and with higher student DECA Total Protective Factor scale scores post-treatment (Indirect Effect B = 3.72, SE = 1.63, p = .02). We discuss reasons why changing these two teacher behaviors might serve as mechanisms of change in our sample. Background and Objective: Child sexual abuse is a point of contention around the world. Protecting children from sexual abuse and ensuring primary prevention approaches has been a predominant task for LMICs. The research objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of the "teach to say-NO" blended theory-based CSA prevention program by measuring knowledge and attitudes and analyzing the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention among primary school teachers in a school environment., Participants and Setting: In total, 146 primary schoolteachers from 27 public schools in Phnom Penh, Cambodia were employed. and 29 teachers were employed for the qualitative study., Method: The study was designed as a mixed-method study, consisting of a quasi-experimental study and a qualitative case study. The "teach to say-NO" program was delivered to intervention schoolteachers for 4 weeks. Both groups completed knowledge and attitude questionnaires at baseline, first, and second follow-up. The qualitative study was evaluated through in-depth face-to-face interviews conducted to analyze the feasibility and acceptability of intervention., Results: Study participants had poor knowledge on CSA and at baseline the knowledge (t = 0.72, d = 0.131) and attitude (t = -0.069, d = -0.011) scores between the intervention and comparison groups were the same. After the intervention participants demonstrated a significant improvement (p < 0.05) within and between groups. School-based consultation or coaching may be used to promote teachers' use of various classroom management practices and interventions. An important aspect of school-based consultation and coaching is ensuring teachers generalize their use of evidence-based practices that were trained through consultation. However, the extent to which teachers generalize practices trained through consultation or coaching is somewhat unclear. As such, the purpose of this meta-analysis was twofold: (a) synthesize the existing school-based consultation literature to determine the extent to which teachers generalize practices they learned through consultation and coaching and (b) make a call to action for researchers to collect generalization data in consultation and coaching research. Seventeen studies were identified for review, in which results indicated school-based consultation and coaching to be effective for promoting teachers' generalization of EBPs (LRRi = 0.82) as well as target outcomes (LRRi = 1.15). Specific implementation supports (i.e., in situ training and behavioral skills training) significantly contributed to teachers' generalization, with specific practices (i.e., behavior specific praise) being more generalizable. Furthermore, moderation analyses were conducted to delineate aspects of consultation and coaching that are more likely to promote teachers' generalized outcomes. Bullying remains a pervasive issue in educational settings worldwide. This study examined the effect of teacher training and self-efficacy on teachers' responses to school bullying with the moderating effect of age. Drawing on data from 585 Taiwanese primary and secondary school teachers, the study revealed six distinct response patterns to bullying among Taiwanese teachers. The results underscore the critical role of self-efficacy in enabling proactive responses to bullying, highlighting that training programs that boost teachers' self-efficacy can be effective across different age groups. Furthermore, the research points to the necessity of differentiated training approaches that consider teachers' age to enhance responses of mediating involvers. Inclusive education for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has increasingly received attention nationwide in China. Schools realize that teachers are under stress and lack the skills to handle daily interactions with these students. So far, few studies have directed efforts to provide a remedy for teachers to improve their daily work. This study aimed to design and implement a 2-hour web-based training on psychological capital (PsyCap) to protect their well-being and foster their supportive behavior for ASD students in the inclusive class. A total of 120 targeted teachers were invited to participate in the training and were randomly divided into control and treatment groups. Pre-, post-, and follow-up surveys were distributed before, after, and one week after the training. ANOVA results suggested that teachers showed a significant increase in their PsyCap scores after completing the training, although the training effect slightly decreased after one week. Moreover, higher levels of PsyCap showed a positive influence on teachers' emotional stability and supportive behavior in class. Background: Evidence from the science of learning suggests that playful learning pedagogical approaches exist along a spectrum and can support student learning. Leveraging active engagement, iterative, socially interactive, meaningful, and joyful interactions with content also supports student learning. Translating these concepts into guidance and support for teachers is lacking., Method: We introduce a tool designed to support teachers in implementing across the facilitation spectrum and leverage the characteristics that help children learn. Teachers play a crucial role in guiding learners through life's challenges. They face educational and socio-economic shifts while striving to teach for a better future. Our study focuses on equipping future teachers, called pre-service teachers, with resilience-building resources during their teacher training program. A potential antecedent to resilience, which facilitates cognitive strategies and attentional processes, is cognitive flexibility. We first tested whether cognitive flexibility predicts resilience. Next, relying on the tenets of positive psychology, which studies resilience, we developed and tested the effectiveness of character strengths intervention in enhancing pre-service teachers' resilience and cognitive flexibility. An individual's belief in their ability to change personal resources could influence how an intervention manifests. Hence, we studied how mindset impacts the intervention's effect on cognitive flexibility and, thus, resilience. We adopted a multi-method approach, guided by Polk's theory of resilience, to test out objectives. Using a cross-sectional design, study one (n = 273) found that cognitive flexibility significantly predicted resilience. Study two (N = 193; n exp  = 133, n cont  = 60) was a multi-site field experiment. We found that intervention significantly enhanced resilience (experimental group M = 29.62, control group M = 28.33) and cognitive flexibility (experimental group M = 54.42, control group M = 52.01). Further, a growth mindset, was found to moderate the indirect effect of character strengths intervention on resilience via cognitive flexibility. The study contributes to theoretical and practical advancements in resilience. Taken together, the findings highlight the cognitive-affective-behavioural makeup of resilience and, importantly, the role of cognitive flexibility. Background: Vulnerable children, including those with neuro-developmental delays and disabilities, often face barriers in accessing early primary education, thus hindering progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 4.2. Evidence-based interventions are essential to enhancing inclusivity and establishing sustainable implementation strategies to address this challenge. This study, Every Newborn-Reach up Early Education Intervention for All Children (EN-REACH), builds on the previous Every Newborn- Simplified Measurement Integrating Longitudinal Neurodevelopmental and Growth (EN-SMILING) observational cohort study. This paper provides the protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial (cRCT) to evaluate the effectiveness of a parenting group intervention program for enhancing school readiness in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Tanzania, and an embedded process evaluation to inform scalability and feasibility., Methods: EN-REACH is a cRCT with at least 150 clusters to evaluate the impact of a parent training program led by trained parent-teacher facilitator pairs, focusing on children aged 4 ~ 6 years preparing for preschool. Approximately 500 participants from the EN-SMILING cohort at each site have been identified. A geographic information system will define ~ 50 clusters in each of the three countries, each with approximately ten parent-child dyads. Half the clusters will be randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. The primary outcome is "school readiness", assessed using the Measuring Early Learning Quality and Outcomes tool. Secondary outcomes include Intelligence Quotient, child functioning, growth, visual, and hearing assessments. Data will be collected at baseline, and post-intervention data following implementation of the parent group intervention sessions over approximately 5 months. Quantitative data on coverage and quality care, combined with qualitative insights from children, caregivers, facilitators, and stakeholders' perspectives, will be used to conduct a process evaluation applying the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework.  DISCUSSION: This protocol details a trial focused on enhancing school readiness and cognitive abilities in young children, inclusive of those with disabilities, aiming to bridge gap from home to early primary education. Objective To understand the current situation and influencing factors of kindergarten teachers' participation in training for preschool sex education in Luzhou city,and provide a basis for improving the sex education literacy of kindergarten teachers in the future. Methods A multi-stage stratified cluster sampling method was adopted,and a questionnaire survey was conducted from December 2021 to January 2022 on the knowledge,attitude,and practice of preschool sex education among all the teachers in 24 kindergartens in Luzhou city. Results Among the 461 teachers,43.0% had participated in lectures/courses/training activities related to preschool sex education;99.1% hoped to participate in lectures/courses/training activities related to preschool sex education;82.6% learned about child sexual knowledge through school education;75.5% expressed the hope to learn about child sexual knowledge through expert training.The results of multivariate Logistic regression showed that except private kindergartens as an inhibiting factor ( OR =0.57,95% CI =0.37-0.87, P =0.008),high monthly income ( OR =3.52,95% CI =1.13-9.30, P =0.011),more ways to know about sex education knowledge ( OR =2.87,95% CI =1.76-4.70, P <0.001),and social support ( OR =1.58,95% CI =1.04-2.38, P =0.030) were promoting factors for teachers to participate in the training for preschool sex education. Conclusion The kindergarten teachers presented a participation rate but a high demand for the training for preschool sex education.They mainly obtain the sex education knowledge from school education.The nature of kindergarten,monthly income of teachers,social support situation,and ways of understanding sex education knowledge are the key factors influencing the teachers' participation in the training for preschool sex education. more...

Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the impact of a video training program (VTP) on primary school teachers' skills in using an adrenaline auto-injector (AAI), in correlation with knowledge regarding allergies, in cases of anaphylaxis., Methods: A questionnaire on teachers' knowledge of allergies and on their level of confidence in using an AAI was distributed in primary schools in the French department of Manche (2173 teachers). A VTP followed this questionnaire. A second questionnaire was then distributed. Theoretical knowledge was assessed with a score out of 20. The confidence level was rated on a scale from 1 to 4., Results: We collected 218 responses to the first questionnaire (10.0 % of the population included). The response rate to the second questionnaire was 4.7 % (103 participants), and from this group, 93 of the 103 participants viewed the video (90.3 %). Overall, 76 of the 218 (34.9 %) participants who completed the first questionnaire also completed the second questionnaire and watched the VTP. The number of participants who completed the whole survey was 76 (out of 2173, 3.5 %). The VTP significantly improved teachers' knowledge of the subject of allergies (the average score increased by 2.11 points, p < 0.001) as well as their confidence in recognizing the signs of a severe allergic reaction and in using an AAI: 85.4 % (n = 88) of self-confident teachers after the VTP versus 42.3 % (n = 92) before the VTP (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: The VTP improved teachers' level of knowledge and confidence in using an AAI in cases of anaphylaxis. School teachers are often inadequately prepared to use an adrenaline auto-injector (AAI), resulting in potentially dangerous treatment delays. The purpose of this study was to assess the observed competence, and self-reported confidence, of primary school teachers in the Republic of Ireland (RoI) to use an AAI. An evaluation of whether there was a link between confidence and competence was also assessed. Teachers from four primary schools in the RoI completed a questionnaire to assess their prior level of experience, training, and confidence levels with AAI administration. The four steps in administrating trainer AAI to a mannequin simulator were then assessed. A total of 61 teachers participated (out of a population of 80). The mean self-reported confidence was 1.82 out of 5 (SD = 0.96). There was no significant difference in confidence between trained and untrained participants (U = 240.5, NS). Participants who had received AAI administration training performed significantly more of the steps correctly (mean = 3.85, SD = 0.95) as compared to those who had received no training (mean = 2.97, SD = 1.10; U = 180.5, p = 0.008). There was no correlation between confidence in administrating AAI and the percentage of steps in the procedure performed correctly (rho =  -0.17, NS).  Conclusion: Improvements in readiness to administer AAIs can be achieved through the application of more effective approaches to teaching clinical skills, changes to school policies and practices, and consideration of the design of AAIs in order to make their operation safer and simpler. It is important that teachers have the confidence and competence to safely administer an AAI. School-based mindfulness trainings (SBMT) are a contemporary approach for intervening to promote students' social and emotional skills and well-being. Despite evidence from the larger field of evidence-based social and emotional learning programs demonstrating the importance of high-quality implementation, few studies have investigated factors impacting the implementation of SBMTs, particularly teacher-level influences. The present study addressed this issue by investigating whether teachers' stress, trust in their fellow teachers and principal, and expectations about the program at baseline predicted the quality of their implementation of a SBMT for students. In addition, we examined whether teachers' stress at baseline moderated the effect of training condition on implementation quality. Implementation quality was assessed via observations and teacher self-reports. Results from a sample of British secondary (middle-high) school educators (N = 81) indicated that teachers who felt more supported by their principals at baseline were later observed to implement the SBMT with greater quality, whereas teachers who had more positive expectations about the program felt more confident teaching the course in the future. Teachers' baseline stress moderated the effect of training condition on all measures of implementation quality; among teachers experiencing high stress at baseline, more intensive training led to higher quality implementation. Background: ADHD is the most common childhood neurodevelopmental disorder. The symptomatology makes the management of ADHD particularly demanding in school, so teachers' training programs have been widely implemented. Nevertheless, these interventions could lead teachers to concentrate on the dysfunctional elements of these students, exposing them to the risk of stigmatisation. Conceptualising stigma and inclusion as narrative processes, the present study observed how teacher ADHD training texts, endorsed by the Italian government, impact on the inclusion process of students., Methods: The research analysed a corpus of N = 31,261 text occurrences and focused on three areas: (1) ADHD as a clinical condition; (2) the impact of ADHD characteristics in the scholastic setting; (3) interventions to manage ADHD criticalities in school settings. To observe the interactive processes fostered by the narratives under scrutiny, we used Dialogic Science and MADIT methodology, since they allow us to measure the language use modalities through an index: the Dialogical Weight (dW). The value of dW ranges between 0.1 (min) and 0.9 (max) and is linked to the potential outcomes of inclusion for students with ADHD. A low dW accounts for narratives entrenched in personal beliefs presented as absolute truths, undermining inclusion of students with ADHD. In contrast, high dW signals language interaction relying on sharable elements, able to foster social unity and diminish stigma., Results: The results yielded a critical discursive configuration, both in general and for the three distinct areas. We measured an overall Dialogical Weight of 0.4dW and, for the three areas (1) = 0.3dW; (2) = 0.3dW; (3) = 0.4dW. The analysed text does not maximise the triggering of inclusive interactions, as they rely on individual references and present one's narrative as the sole plausible perspective: reinforcing already existing positions and exposing to the risk of stereotyping of the pupils., Conclusions: The study highlighted how the ADHD training materials analysed, focusing on a purely informational and clinical approach, lose in effectiveness with respect to generating inclusive school settings. Background: With suicide as a leading cause of death, the issue of children and adolescent suicide risks is in the spotlight today. To empower teachers in primary and secondary schools to serve as gatekeepers and to ensure the safety of children and adolescents, the systematically tailored and localized Life Gatekeeper suicide prevention program was designed for Chinese schools., Objective: With the ultimate goal of preventing child and adolescent suicide, we aim to outline a research protocol for examining outcomes of the recently created standardized school-based Life Gatekeeper program in reducing teachers' stigma, increasing their knowledge, willingness to intervene, and perceived competence., Methods: Participants will be recruited from eligible primary and secondary schools. Cluster sampling will be used to randomly assign each school to either the intervention group or the control group. The primary outcomes are stigma against suicide, suicide literacy, perceived competence, and willingness to intervene with suicidal individuals, which will be measured using the Stigma of Suicide Scale, the Literacy of Suicide Scale, and the Willingness to Intervene Against Suicide Questionnaire, respectively. Measurements will be taken at four time points, including pre-intervention, immediately after the intervention, 6-month follow-up, and 1-year follow-up., Conclusions: The current study features innovative implementation in the real world, by using a randomized controlled trial design to examine the effectiveness of a school-based gatekeeper program among primary and secondary school teachers, following a sequence of defined and refined steps. Introduction: Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder among humans after headaches. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 50-65 million individuals were diagnosed with epilepsy throughout the world, and around two million new cases of epilepsy are added to this figure every year., Methods: Designed as descriptive and cross-sectional research, this study was performed on 132 elementary school teachers. Training on epilepsy and epileptic seizure was given to teachers. The pretest and posttest research data were collected with the face-to-face interview method. In this process, the epilepsy knowledge scale was used as well as a survey form that had questions designed to find out about teachers' personal characteristics. The Statistical Package for Social Science 25.0 was utilized in the statistical analysis of research data. In the research, the statistical significance was identified if the p-value was below.05 (p < .05)., Results: Of all teachers participating in the study, 59.1% were female, 90.2% were married, and 47.7% witnessed an epilepsy seizure before. The mean of teachers' pretest epilepsy knowledge scores was 8.43 ± 4.31 points before the training while the mean of their posttest epilepsy knowledge scores was 12.65 ± 2.48 points after the training. The difference between the means of pretest and posttest scores was statistically significant (p = .000). After the training, there was a statistically significant increase in means of scores obtained by teachers from each item of the epilepsy knowledge scale (p < .05)., Conclusions: As there was a statistically significant improvement in levels of teachers' knowledge about both epilepsy and epileptic seizure after the training, it is recommended that the training about the approach to epilepsy and epileptic seizure be given to all teachers, and additionally, including these topics in the course curricula of universities is recommended., (© 2024 The Authors. Background: In the United States, many classroom teachers also teach physical education (PE). However, there is a dearth of evidence- and standard-based PE programs designed to support classroom teachers to deliver PE effectively in schools., Methods: The purpose of this study was to establish proof-of-concept for the Pocket PE 3-5 digital app in school settings with 10 third- to fifth-grade classroom teachers. We assessed fidelity of program implementation, measured via observations of PE quality. Students used wrist-worn heart rate monitors during Pocket PE 3-5 lessons to measure time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity. Program feasibility was primarily assessed through teacher-reported surveys of usability, satisfaction, and acceptability and exit interviews., Results: Mean PE observation scores were 18.6 (SD = 1.5) on a scale of 5 to 20. On average, students spent 56.7% (SD = 13.1%) of class time engaging in moderate to vigorous physical activity. Mean survey scores, reported on a 5-point scale, were 4.5 (SD = 0.6) for acceptability, 4.8 (SD = 0.4) for usability, and 4.7 (SD = 0.7) for satisfaction. There is a nationwide shortage of qualified Teachers of Deaf (TOD) and teacher attrition is an important component of the shortage. This qualitative research study examines the experiences of thirty-three former TODs in the United States who left their teaching positions in the last decade and the reasons why they resigned. Data sources include open-ended survey questions and focus groups. While TODs experienced the concept of "the last straw," themes in the reasons they exited the field included: (1) Work life's adverse effects on personal well-being, (2) Lack of support from the school community, and (3) Inadequate training in teacher preparation programs. This study brings attention to some TODs' struggles, contextualizes previous quantitative findings about TOD dissatisfaction, and makes recommendations for deaf education to maintain a strong teacher force that effectively serves deaf students. more...

Based on the results of a needs analysis program, already conducted in a parallel study, a need-based teacher professional development program (TPDP) was designed and implemented, which was supported by peer coaching (as a follow-up strategy) and evaluation to address the current needs of Iranian English teachers serving at public junior high schools and to offer suggestions for policy and practice. The effectiveness of the program was evaluated through various data collection methods (i.e. focus group discussions, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews) taking into account the perspectives of teachers, supervisors, and teacher educators. Besides, the possible effects of the program on students' foreign language achievement were investigated. The results of evaluations indicated that although needs-based peer-coached TPDPs were more likely to consolidate English teachers' knowledge, improve their teaching practices, and promote students' academic achievement, teacher education policy-makers and professional development (PD) designers/providers in Iran still followed more traditional approaches, keeping teachers in isolation and not allowing the exchange of ideas to take place among them. The effectiveness of physical activity interventions can be improved through examining the aspects related to their implementation. However, little such evidence has been collected, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of a school-based physical activity intervention with qualitative and quantitative data from different actors (students, teachers and parents) involved in developing the program. The program was conducted in 2017 with three main components: (i) teacher training, (ii) environmental changes and (iii) educational actions. Mixed-method evaluation was performed by an independent evaluation team using a validated indicator matrix for the implementation process, including the self-reported information of students, teachers and parents, as well as interviews with teachers. In the 3 eligible schools, 350 adolescents (51% girls) answered the implementation questionnaire, as did 45 parents (84% mothers), and 47 teachers (70% female). In the qualitative analysis, 18 teachers participated. Categorical analysis found that the intervention was considered feasible by teachers. In general, teachers had a more positive perception of the implementation than did students. The lack of engagement from the school community and parents and the busy schedule of teachers were indicated to be the main difficulties. Demonstrators spend significant time with students on a weekly basis in instructional laboratories and are well poised to offer students meaningful learning. Most often, effective demonstrator training is neglected due to time and resource restraints and it is clear more attention is needed. We hypothesized that students' learning experience in laboratories would improve if demonstrators were well trained particularly across three overlapping learning domains: subject-specific knowledge (cognitive and psychomotor), problem solving (cognitive) and group management including personalized student learning strategies (affective). We assessed both students and demonstrators on the impact of this extensive demonstrator training in 1st- and 2nd-year bioscience practical courses over two years. The results show that all students rated the demonstrators' performance higher after the extensive training. Students from both years valued the provision of problem-solving skills; however, 1st-year students placed greater value on the demonstrator's ability to address student inclusivity, whereas 2nd-year students preferred the provision of strong subject knowledge. Interestingly, demonstrators' own perception of their teaching ability was different from student feedback on their performance, which may be due to lack of reflective practice. We propose a multimodal training framework that includes inclusivity/approachability and reflection as an integral part of training. This study further suggests that demonstrator training needs to be tailored to the changing needs of students as they progress through the different levels of their degree. The current study tested the effects of an intervention based on the trans-contextual model (TCM) on secondary school PE students' sport injury prevention behavior and on theory-based motivational and social cognition mediators. Participants were PE students (N = 1168; M age  = 13.322 ± 1.045, range = 12-16; female = 51.721%) who participated in a 3-month cluster-randomized controlled trial. Schools were randomly assigned to a treatment group, in which PE teachers received training to be more supportive of psychological needs in teaching sport injury prevention, or a control group, in which PE teachers received no training. Participants completed survey measures of TCM variables and self-reported sport injury prevention behavior at baseline and at 3-month post-intervention follow-up. The proposed TCM model exhibited adequate fit with the data, χ 2  = 143.080 (df = 19), CFI = 0.956, TLI = 0.916, RMSEA = 0.078 (90% CI = 0.066-0.090), and SRMR = 0.058. We found positive, statistically significant direct intervention effects on changes in perceived psychological need support (β = 0.064, p = 0.020). We also found positive, significant direct (β = 0.086-0.599, p < 0.001) and indirect (β = 0.002-0.027, p = 0.020-0.032) intervention effects on changes in TCM variables and behaviors to prevent sport injuries. Context-appropriate nutrition education interventions targeting middle school students have the potential to promote healthy dietary patters that may help prevent unnecessary weight gain at a point in childhood development when youth experience increasing agency over their food choices. The aim of this review was to identify and synthesize themes in train-the-trainer approaches, intervention content and delivery, and youth receptivity across teacher, mentor, and peer-led nutrition education interventions that targeted middle school-age youth in urban, primarily low-income settings. A systematic, electronic literature search was conducted in seven electronic databases, PubMed/Medline, CINAHL, ERIC, PsycINFO, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Cochrane CENTRAL, using fixed inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 53 papers representing 39 unique interventions were selected for data extraction and quality assessment. A framework synthesis approach was used to organize the interventions into six categories and identify themes according to whether the intervention was classroom-based or out-of-school-based and whether adults, cross-age peers or same-age peers delivered the intervention. Ten of the interventions contained multiple components such that they were included in two of the categories. The review findings indicated that trainings should be interactive, include opportunities to role-play intervention scenarios and provide follow-up support throughout intervention delivery. The need for excess weight gain prevention in disadvantaged young children is widely recognised. Early Childhood Education and Care teachers are potential key actors in early interventions to prevent overweight and obesity. This study examines the effects of a preschool-based intervention for teachers in promoting healthy eating and physical activity in young children. A cluster randomised controlled trial was conducted at 41 preschools in a deprived area of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The intervention consisted of 2 programmes that were applied in succession: A Healthy Start and PLAYgrounds for TODdlers. The study period was 9 months. Primary outcomes were assessed via questionnaires and included teachers' knowledge, attitude, food/activity-related practices, and level of confidence in promoting healthy behaviours. Secondary outcomes in this study were teachers' and children's BMI (z-score), body composition, dietary intake and physical activity level. Intention-to-treat analyses were performed using linear mixed models. In total, 115 teachers and 249 children (mean age 3.0 (0.2) years) were included. A positive effect on teachers' knowledge about the Dutch dietary guidelines was found after the programme A Healthy Start (difference = 1.38; 1-sided 95% CL = 0.29; p = 0.02). This effect was not sustained at 9 months (difference = 0.34; 1-sided 95% CL = -0.76; p = 0.31). The overall intervention had a positive effect on 3 of the 5 attitude statements regarding a healthy lifestyle (difference ranged from 0.34 to 0.55) and on the practice scale Activity-related-Modelling (difference = 0.16; 1-sided 95% CL = 0.06; p = 0.01). No intervention effects were observed on food-related practice scales and the level of confidence in promoting healthy behaviours. At this stage, no effects were seen on teachers' and children's BMI (z-score). Research-based teaching practices can improve student learning outcomes in a variety of complex educational environments. The implementation of learner-centered teaching practices in STEM can both benefit from or be constrained by different factors related to individual instructors and the teaching environment. Additionally, we know little of how the instructional climate varies across institutions and how this climate affects teaching practices. Our study sought to examine the relative importance of environmental influences and individual characteristics on learner-centered teaching practices across institutions. We also assessed differences in our study population and departmental climate for 35 US higher education institutions across the country. We found that self-efficacy in teaching and professional development exert a strong influence on faculty teaching practices in biology. While departmental climate did not emerge as a significant predictor of teaching practices, there was consistently low support for teaching, and institution size was negatively correlated with leadership and evaluation of effective teaching. We also found that intensive professional development programs, such as the Faculty Institutes for Reforming Science Teaching IV program, may prepare instructors to teach learner-centered courses in different collegial teaching climates. Background: Violence is a leading global public health problem, and interventions in early childhood are important in the primary prevention of violence. We tested whether the Irie Classroom Toolbox, a violence-prevention teacher-training programme reduced violence against children by teachers and reduced class-wide child aggression in Jamaican preschools (catering to children aged 3-6 years)., Methods: We did a single-blind, cluster-randomised controlled trial in 76 preschools in Kingston and St Andrew, randomly selected, using simple randomisation, from 120 eligible preschools. Inclusion criteria were two to four classes of children; at least ten children per class; and located in an urban area. We randomly assigned preschools (1:1) to either the Irie Classroom Toolbox intervention or waiting-list control that received no intervention, using a computer-generated randomisation sequence by an independent statistician masked to school identity. The Toolbox involved training teachers in classroom behaviour management and promoting child social-emotional competence. All assessors were masked to group assignment. All teachers and classrooms in the selected schools participated in the study. Within each school, we used simple randomisation to randomly select up to 12 children aged 4 years for evaluation of child outcomes. The Toolbox intervention was implemented from August to April the following year. Teacher and classroom measures were done at baseline (the summer school term; ie, May to June), post-intervention (after 8 months of intervention; ie, May to June of the following year), and 1-year follow-up (ie, May to June 2 years later). The primary outcomes were observations of violence against children (including physical violence and psychological aggression) by teachers occurring across one full school day, and class-wide child aggression occurring over five 20-min intervals on another school day, all measured at post-intervention and 1-year follow-up and analysed by intention to treat. This trial is registered with ISRCTN, number ISRCTN11968472., Findings: Between June 22, 2015, and April 29, 2016, (after baseline measurements were completed), we assigned 38 preschools (with 119 teachers) to the Toolbox intervention and 38 preschools (with 110 teachers) to control. 441 children in the intervention schools and 424 in the control schools were included in the evaluation. All schools were included in the post-intervention and follow-up analyses. There were fewer counts of violence against children by teachers in the intervention schools compared with control schools at post-intervention (median counts 3 [IQR 0-11] vs 15 [3-35]; effect size -67·12%, 95% CI -80·71 to -53·52, p<0·0001) and 1-year follow-up (median counts 3 [IQR 0-9] vs 6 [1-16]; effect size -53·86, 95% CI -71·08 to -36·65, p<0·0001). No differences between groups were found for class-wide child aggression at post-intervention (effect size 0·07, 95% CI -0·16 to 0·29, p=0·72) or 1-year follow-up (-0·14, -0·42 to 0·16, p=0·72)., Interpretation: In Jamaican preschools, the Irie Classroom Toolbox effectively reduced violence against children by teachers. The Toolbox was designed for use with undertrained teachers working in low-resource settings and should be effective with early childhood practitioners in other LMICs. The current study describes the design, implementation, and analysis of a professional development programme using a Lesson Study model to enhance awareness in preschool professionals regarding inclusive education for children with autism spectrum disorder. The mixed method approach included pre- and post-intervention questionnaires, audio-recordings of group seminars, and an interview. The results indicated an increase in autism awareness among the professionals, suggesting that professionals changed their practice as a result of the programme. This was particularly clear regarding making adjustments to the learning environment and taking measures to prevent challenging situations. Problem: Given the complex interaction among patients, individual providers, health care teams, and the clinical environment, patient safety events with serious consequences are most likely to occur in intensive care units, operating rooms, and emergency departments (EDs). With low-frequency, high-risk events such as pediatric resuscitations, health care teams working in EDs may not have the clinical opportunity to identify deficiencies, review and reinforce knowledge and skills, and problem solve in authentic clinical conditions. Without creating opportunities to safely practice, hospitals run the risk of having health care teams and environments that are not prepared to provide optimal patient care., Approach: Researchers employed a case series design and used a train-the-trainer model for in situ simulation. They trained health care professionals (instructors) in 3 general, nonacademic EDs in the San Francisco Bay area of California to perform pediatric resuscitation in situ simulations in 2018-2019. In situ simulations occur in the clinical work environment with simulation participants (teams) who are health care professionals taking care of actual patients., Outcomes: Teams made up of physicians, nurses, and ED technicians were evaluated for clinical performance, teamwork, and communication during in situ simulations conducted by instructors at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. Debriefing after the simulations identified multiple latent safety threats (i.e., unidentified potential safety hazards) that were previously unknown. Problem: Primary care providers are responsible for the majority of pain care and opioid prescribing, but they are often inadequately trained. Training current providers to address the crisis of excessive opioid prescribing and inadequate pain management is a substantial workforce problem that requires urgent action. This educational need is vast and requires a staged solution to amplify its effect., Approach: The University of California, Davis Train-the-Trainer (T3) Primary Care Pain Management Fellowship targets the most pressing topics related to pain management, including prescription drug abuse, responsible opioid prescribing, and substance abuse, as well as broad coverage of comprehensive pain management. It offers an innovative, scalable solution to address the education gap in pain management that, in part, fuels the opioid epidemic in the United States. The T3 Fellowship incorporates a competency-based curriculum and a hybrid educational model of in-person and distance-based learning and direct faculty-fellow mentoring to comprehensively train primary care providers in pain care and prepare them to train others. Since it was established in 2017, 2 cohorts (of 17 and 26 fellows) have completed the 10-month fellowship and a third cohort of 38 fellows started the program in September 2019., Outcomes: Pre- and postprogram surveys for the first 2 cohorts, and a 6-month postprogram survey for the first cohort, demonstrated fellows' improvement and sustained performance in pain competencies as well as increased recognition and understanding of pain and related topics., Next Steps: If adopted by other institutions and expanded across the country, the T3 Fellowship holds potential for developing an ever-growing legion of trained professionals who will locally fill the need for effective pain management, including appropriate opioid prescribing. Although typically taught by special educators, few studies have examined if certification area is associated with academic outcomes for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The purpose of this study was to determine whether students with ASD scored better on language arts and mathematics state assessments depending on teacher certification, and whether these associations varied by assessment type. We analyzed 3 years of state administrative data from students with ASD in grades 4-8 receiving special education services. Results showed students taking the regular or alternate assessment had similar academic outcomes regardless of teacher certification. Students who were taught by special education certified teachers and took the modified assessment had lower academic outcomes. Implications for practice, policy, and research are discussed. more...

Background: Providing effective education to students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) poses a significant challenge to educators. Although several evidence-based practices (EBPs) have been developed, few have been systematically implemented in educational settings. Pivotal response treatment (PRT) is a naturalistic behavioral intervention that has been adapted for implementation in the school context. Methods: This pilot study used a concurrent multiple baseline design across seven teachers and students with ASD to examine the effectiveness of teacher training in classroom pivotal response teaching (CPRT) on teacher fidelity of implementation during small-group instruction and students' communication skills and maladaptive behaviors in schools for special education in the Netherlands. Results: Results indicated no replicated effect of CPRT training on teachers' fidelity of implementation or children's communications skills and maladaptive behavior, although teachers reported high satisfaction with the CPRT training. Background: Sweden is home to a large and growing population of refugee youths who may be at risk of mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Thus, there is a need for interventions that address mental health problems in these populations. Schools have been identified as an ideal setting for delivering such interventions as they offer a non-stigmatizing space and are often central to young refugees' social networks. The RefugeesWellSchool trial in Sweden will investigate an intervention comprising two programmes: Teaching Recovery Techniques (TRT) and In-service Teacher Training (INSETT), delivered in a school setting, among refugee youth. TRT is a group-based programme for children and adolescents, informed by Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). INSETT is a multi-module course for teachers providing information on trauma and the refugee experience to build teachers' cultural competence and capacity for supporting refugee youths in schools., Methods: This trial employs a cluster randomized-control design with two arms: (1) the intervention arm in which the TRT and INSETT programmes are offered (n = 350), (2) the wait-list control arm (n = 350) in which services are provided as usual until the TRT and INSETT programmes are offered approximately six months later. Data will be collected prior to the intervention, immediately following the intervention, and at three months post-intervention. Purpose African American English (AAE) speakers often face mismatches between home language and school language, coupled with negative attitudes toward AAE in the classroom. This forum, Serving African American English Speakers in Schools Through Interprofessional Education & Practice, will help researchers, parents, and school-based practitioners communicate in ways that are synergistic, collaborative, and transparent to improve educational outcomes of AAE speakers. Method The forum includes a tutorial offering readers instructions on how to engage in community-based participatory research (Holt, 2021). Through two clinical focus articles, readers will recognize how AAE develops during the preschool years and is expressed across various linguistic contexts and elicitation tasks (Newkirk-Turner & Green, 2021) and identify markers of developmental language disorder within AAE from language samples analyzed in Computerized Language Analysis (Overton et al., 2021). Seven empirical articles employ such designs as quantitative (Byrd & Brown, 2021; Diehm & Hendricks, 2021; Hendricks & Jimenez, 2021; Maher et al., 2021; Mahurin-Smith et al., 2021), qualitative (Hamilton & DeThorne, 2021), and mixed methods (Mills et al., 2021). These articles will help readers identify ways in which AAE affects how teachers view its speakers' language skills and communicative practices and relates to its speakers' literacy outcomes. Introduction: Introduction: Nutrition Education (NE) has been identified as a key factor to prevent children obesity. Teachers and dietitians are the professionals in charge of transmitting this knowledge to children; however, it has been identified that they do not possess either proper training, or the proper tools to perform this activity. Objectives: to evaluate the acceptability and usability of a NE Internet platform and its two "Serious Games" (SGs) among a sample of elementary school teachers, dietitians, and education students. In addition, to evaluate the efficacy of this platform to teach NE in a sample of children aged 9 to 12 years. Methods: a total of 66 NE professionals and 135 children participated. Usability and acceptability questionnaires of the platform and an instrument to measure the acceptability, immersion, and playability of the SGs were administered to the professionals. The children fulfilled a questionnaire on nutritional knowledge. Descriptive statistics analyzed the main responses of the professionals involved, and an ANOVA compared the differences observed. For the children´s data a t-test of repeated samples and a repeated-measures ANOVA were performed. Results: dietitians and education students responded with a favorable opinion about the platform; however, the scores given by all professionals to the SGs ranged from low to moderate. Children increased their nutritional knowledge from pre to post evaluation (p < 0.001). This increase was observed in 10-year-old children and in children with 11 to 12 years of age, but not in 9-year-olds. Conclusions: this platform proved to be an effective tool to increase children's nutritional knowledge. In today's world of global migration and urbanization, millions of children are separated from parents. Their mental health and future competences as citizens depend on the quality of care from foster parents and group home staff in nonparental care settings. Caregivers are challenged by poor work conditions, too many children, and a lack of knowledge about care for traumatized children. How can our profession match this challenge by upscaling interventions? Digital designs for applications of psychology are growing, recently accelerated by the COVID-19 crisis. From 2008, the author developed a blended learning intervention. In partnerships with nongovernmental organizations and government agencies, care recommendations from an international network of researchers are transformed into start-up seminars for staff, followed by a 6-month online classroom education. Students learn and practice how to train local caregiver groups in attachment-based care, using training sessions developed in local languages, adjusted to culture. At present, the author's Fairstart Foundation educated 500 staff from partners in 26 countries, who have trained the caregivers of some 40,000 children. The theoretical, logistic and technical steps from research to daily caregiver-child practices are described, to inspire discussions of how online designs and international partnerships may benefit underserved populations. Background: School violence continues to afflict our educational institutions. In response, an institutional initiative was launched to train educators and school support staff in life-saving skills aimed at hemorrhage control., Methods: The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma "Stop the Bleed" (STB) Program was promoted as a quality improvement initiative to schools within the geographic catchment area of this Level I Trauma Center. Participants were given the opportunity to take precourse, and postcourse confidence inventories using a Likert Scale. Statistical analysis of the 324 precourse to postcourse evaluations measuring change in confidence was used to evaluate improvement in readiness of school systems to respond in mass casualty incidents., Results: Students enrolled in the STB Program were offered the opportunity to assess their confidence precourse and postcourse in reference to 7 questions. Precourse and postcourse Likert Scale inventories were compared and analyzed to assess the strength of the improvement in confidence using Student's t -test, where P < .05 is statistically significant. Students demonstrated improvement ( P < .006) that was statistically significant across all 7-question relating to enhance confidence postcourse compared with the precourse., Discussion: This STB quality initiative has demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in the confidence of teachers and school personnel to render lifesaving care in the event of a mass casualty or isolated incident of life-threatening hemorrhage. Context: Transgender student-athletes are increasingly participating in sport, requiring athletic trainer (AT) preparedness to care for their needs., Objective: To measure ATs' (1) perceived definition of transgender, (2) comfort and competence working with transgender student-athletes, (3) sources of education, (4) perceived legal concerns, and (5) perception of competitive advantage., Design: Cross-sectional study., Setting: Mixed-methods survey., Patients or Other Participants: Collegiate or university ATs (n = 5537) received an email invitation to participate; the data of 667 ATs were included in the analysis., Main Outcome Measure(s): A multipart 43-item questionnaire addressing the primary objectives of the study, with other factors that were explored in relation to these objectives to uncover potential influences on their responses. We calculated descriptive statistics, and for open-ended responses, we used the consensual qualitative research tradition., Results: About half (48.1%, n = 321) of the participants agreed they were competent in treating transgender patients, but only 36.0% (n = 240) believed they were competent in practicing collaboratively with an endocrinologist in the drug-screening processes. Fewer than half (45.6%, n = 304) of participants felt they were competent in using appropriate terminology relating to transgender patients. The ATs disagreed when asked if they were competent regarding counseling transgender patients about the effects of hormone replacement therapy on sport participation (48.1%, n = 321) or on mental health concerns (40.3%, n = 269). Participants learned most frequently from media outlets (35.2%, n = 235) or personal experiences with family, friends, or themselves (33.7%, n = 225), yet 35.1% (n = 243) received no education in caring for transgender patients. Many ATs (41.2%, n = 278) believed that transgender female student-athletes had a competitive advantage. In contrast, 6.6% (n = 44) of participants indicated that transgender male student-athletes had a competitive advantage., Conclusions: Although collegiate ATs generally felt competent in treating transgender patients, they did not feel capable of addressing specific aspects of transgender patients' health care needs. Attitudes of 74 early childhood educators toward young children who stutter were explored using a Greek translation of Teacher Attitudes Toward Stuttering (TATS) Inventory and the Alabama Stuttering Knowledge Test (ASK). Results indicated a significant positive correlation between educators' attitudes towards stuttering (TATS) and knowledge of stuttering (ASK). Multiple regression analysis showed that age, years of experience and educational level were not significant predictors of attitudes (TATS) toward young children who stutter. Participants' responses appeared to indicate positive attitudes towards young children who stutter. This study highlighted the need for awareness campaigns and education opportunities to ensure fewer negative perceptions for very young children who stutter. more...
