Abstract

Billions of Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) passive tags are produced yearly to identify goods remotely. New research and business applications are continuously arising, including recently localization and sensing to monitor earth surface processes. Indeed, passive tags can cost 10 to 100 times less than wireless sensors networks and require little maintenance, facilitating years-long monitoring with ten's to thousands of tags. This study reviews the existing and potential applications of RFID in geosciences. The most mature application today is the study of coarse sediment transport in rivers or coastal environments, using tags placed into pebbles. More recently, tag localization was used to monitor landslide displacement, with a centimetric accuracy. Sensing tags were used to detect a displacement threshold on unstable rocks, to monitor the soil moisture or temperature, and to monitor the snowpack temperature and snow water equivalent. RFID sensors, available today, could monitor other parameters, such as the vibration of structures, the tilt of unstable boulders, the strain of a material, or the salinity of water. Key challenges for using RFID monitoring more broadly in geosciences include the use of ground and aerial vehicles to collect data or localize tags, the increase in reading range and duration, the ability to use tags placed under ground, snow, water or vegetation, and the optimization of economical and environmental cost. Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new robust algorithm to improve the localization accuracy without using additional materials. This algorithm is based on a probabilistic approach which only uses the read count (number of detection) of reference and target tags. The localization is performed through two steps. The first step consists of estimating a local position of object tags in a given zone, while in the second step, all estimated local positions are used to calculate one global position. Furthermore, a complementary study concerning the influence of reference tags positions, the movement nature and the coverage of the work area is presented and discussed. For the proof of concept, a series of tests were elaborated with the proposed localization system created comprising conventional passive EPCglobal Class-1 Gen-2 UHF RFID tags, a commercial UHF RFID reader and a laptop. Measurements are carried out in an indoor environment where the 5.5 m×1.25 m measurement zone was placed on drywalls. Abstract

Summarization: This article presents European-based contributions for wireless power transmission (WPT), related to applications ranging from future Internet of Things (IoT) and fifth-generation (5G) systems to high-power electric vehicle charging. The contributors are all members of a European consortium on WPT, COST Action IC1301. WPT is the driving technology that will enable the next stage in the current consumer electronics revolution, including batteryless sensors, passive RF identification (RFID), passive wireless sensors, the IoT, and machine-to-machine solutions. Abstract

International audience; A new multiband Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Radiofrequency Identification (RFID) sensor tag for industrial applications is proposed. The principle relies on a very simple operation: the effect of flipping the tag itself on a metallic surface for operation either in the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) or the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) UHF RFID frequency bands. Moreover, the tag design aims an optimization for operation on metallic objects and maintains a small form factor. An analysis based on the equivalent circuit of the antenna impedance considering the two positions explains the physical concept and shows the impact of the metallic surface on the resonance frequency of the RFID sensor tag. Measurement results demonstrate a read range up to 3 m for ETSI and FCC UHF RFID frequency bands when the sensor tag is operating on metallic surface.

Abstract

National audience; Un nouveau concept de capteur RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) de température est présenté. Récemment sont apparues des puces RFID disposant d’une fonction d’« auto-tuning » qui leur permet d’ajuster quasi-automatiquement leur impédance pour optimiser la récupération d’énergie à la mise sous tension. Le principe proposé est d’exploiter cette fonction pour transformer le tag en capteur de température. Si on utilise un substrat sensible à la température, alors l’impédance de l’antenne du tag varie avec la température ce qui se traduit par une activation de la fonction d’auto-tuning. Un tag muni de cette fonctionnalité va s’ajuster automatiquement avec la température. Il est alors possible de remonter à la température et de la lire à l’aide du lecteur RFID comme le démontre les résultats expérimentaux présentés.

Abstract

In this work we study the use of optical fiber networks to perform microwave processing functions. Theoretical and experimental results are presented in the case of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer network, a Fabry-Perot network, and a combination of the two previous networks. All of these networks are realized with single-mode fiber elements. The use of optical scattering parameters and the graphical representation technique was introduced in our model, which greatly simplified the analysis. A good agreement between modeling and experiment as well as good performances from the microwave point of view are observed.

Abstract

This paper deals with a new formulation of the Spectral Domain Technique (SDT) for the analysis of the general case of uniaxial/biaxial, electric/magnetic anisotropic multilayer planar structures. As an illustration of the capabilities of this formulation we apply it to the analysis of shielded CPW structures. The dispersive properties of the fundamental and higher order modes in various cases of electric/magnetic anisotropy as well as the induction electric and magnetic lines are calculated. Such results, and particularly the induction lines, may be used to predict the behaviour of the studied structure as well as to point out its sensitive geometrical and electrical parameters. Some general rules will be discussed which lead to a better understanding of the effect of anisotropy.
