Abstract

The vaquita is the most critically endangered marine mammal, with fewer than 19 remaining in the wild. First described in 1958, the vaquita has been in rapid decline for more than 20 years resulting from inadvertent deaths due to the increasing use of large-mesh gillnets. To understand the evolutionary and demographic history of the vaquita, we used combined long-read sequencing and long-range scaffolding methods with long- and short-read RNA sequencing to generate a near error-free annotated reference genome assembly from cell lines derived from a female individual. The genome assembly consists of 99.92% of the assembled sequence contained in 21 nearly gapless chromosome-length autosome scaffolds and the X-chromosome scaffold, with a scaffold N50 of 115 Mb. Genome-wide heterozygosity is the lowest (0.01%) of any mammalian species analysed to date, but heterozygosity is evenly distributed across the chromosomes, consistent with long-term small population size at genetic equilibrium, rather than low diversity resulting from a recent population bottleneck or inbreeding. Historical demography of the vaquita indicates long-term population stability at less than 5,000 (Ne) for over 200,000 years. Together, these analyses indicate that the vaquita genome has had ample opportunity to purge highly deleterious alleles and potentially maintain diversity necessary for population health.

15. Evidence of distribution overlap between Atlantic and Baltic grey seals

Abstract

Grey seals from both the Atlantic and Baltic Sea subspecies are recovering from dramatic declines and recolonising former ranges, potentially leading to overlapping distributions and an emerging subspecies transition zone in Kattegat between Denmark and Sweden. The two subspecies have asynchronous moulting and pupping seasons. We present aerial survey data from 2011 to 2023 in Danish Kattegat during the Atlantic subspecies’ moulting (March–April) and pupping (December–January) seasons, as well as the Baltic subspecies’ moulting season (May–June). During the Atlantic subspecies’ peak moulting season, 82% of the grey seals were recorded north of the island of Læsø (N57°18′, E11°00′). In contrast, during the Baltic moulting season in those years, only 9% of the grey seals were recorded here. This indicates a predominance of Atlantic grey seals in the north and Baltic grey seals in central and southern Kattegat. In 2022 and 2023, three pups were recorded around Læsø during early January, which coincides with the pupping season of northern Wadden Sea grey seals. Previously, pups have been recorded in the same locations during the Baltic pupping season, which demonstrates overlapping breeding ranges. Grey seals are known to have plasticity in the timing of pupping indicated by a west to east cline of progressively later pupping in the eastern North Atlantic. Historical sources document that the Baltic pupping season in Kattegat was earlier than it has been in recent years. Thus, the expanding ranges may be associated with convergence of Atlantic and Baltic subspecies’ pupping seasons and potential hybridisation in this emerging transition zone.

Abstract

Introduction: Drones, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), have emerged as valuable tools for wildlife monitoring, offering potentially non-intrusive observations in challenging terrains like marine ecosystems. Despite their potential, widespread use is impeded by regulatory constraints, especially in protected areas. Methods: This study aims to assess the impact of varying flight altitudes and flight approaches of two commercial drones on the behaviour of harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) and compare to existing findings for marine mammals. We conducted a comparative analysis of the response to flight altitude from 70 m gradually descending to 10 m and two different flight approaches between the DJI Phantom 4Pro and the Autel EVO II RTK drones in the Danish part of the Wadden Sea. Results: We found varying responses, where species-specific sensitivity and environmental conditions appeared to influence the behavioural reactions of the seals. Our results reveal that seal reactions to drones are complex and depend on several factors, such as flight altitude, drone model, received noise levels, approach, weather conditions, the animals' annual cycle, and geographic location. Discussion: The outcomes hold significance for refining regulatory policies governing drone flights in protected marine environments, balancing conservation efforts with technological advancements in wildlife monitoring and ensuring undisturbed observations of seals. Abstract

The management and conservation of biodiversity relies on information on both the abundance of species and the potential impact of threats. Globally, one of the largest threats towards marine biodiversity is bycatch in fisheries. Under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), EU Member States are required to assess the status of species, such as the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), in relation to their abundance and mortality due to bycatch every six years. The Vulnerable (HELCOM) Belt Sea population of harbour porpoise has been surveyed to determine its abundance six times using dedicated aerial or shipbased line-transect distance sampling surveys. Here, we estimated the first trend in population abundance over an 18 year period (2005-2022). Using the most recent abundance estimate, we computed a mortality limit applying the modified Potential Biological Removal (mPBR) method based on the regionally agreed conservation objective to restore or maintain 80% of carrying capacity over 100 years with an 80% probability. Over the past 18 years there has been a strong negative trend (-2.7% p.a.; 95% CI: -4.1%; + 1.3%) in abundance, with a 90.5% probability. The mortality limit was estimated to be 24 animals, which the current bycatch estimates (~900 porpoises/year from the commercial Danish and Swedish set net fishery fleets, with no data from Germany and other fishery types) exceed by far. The frequency and quality of data available on abundance for this population are higher than those available for the majority of marine species. Given the observed population decline and likely unsustainable levels of bycatch, the results presented here provide a strong basis to make informed, evidence-based management decisions for action for this population. Denne rapport er del III af en opdatering af DCEs videnskabelige rapport nr. 52 om ”Vurdering af forstyrrelsestrusler i Natura 2000-områderne”, der blev udgivet i 2013. Rapporten gennemgår med baggrund i de nyeste Natura 2000-basisanalyser og planer (2022-2027) fuglebeskytteelses- og habitatområderne på Øerne, i Sydøstkattegat. Bælthavene og Østersøen. I rapporten vurderes det for hvert område, om en reservatbekendtgørelse er et relevant forvaltningsværktøj i forhold til at sikre de fugle- og pattedyrarter, der indgår i områdernes udpegningsgrundlag, mod forstyrrelser.

Abstract

Denne rapport er del I af en opdatering af DCEs videnskabelige rapport nr. 52 om ”Vurdering af forstyrrelsestrusler i Natura 2000-områderne”, der blev udgivet i 2013. Rapporten giver en generel introduktion til afrapporteringens formål og metode samt en omfattende litteraturgennemgang i relation til de arter af fugle og pattedyr, der indgår i Natura 2000-områdernes udpegningsgrundlag. Den tilgængelige viden om forskellige menneskelige forstyrrelser, deres effekter og påvirkninger af fugle og pattedyr præsenteres, udviklingen i omfanget af disse beskrives, og der gives nogle praktiske erfaringer omkring håndtering af forstyrrelser. Rapporten giver også noglegenerelle anbefalinger for artsgrupper, hvor forstyrrelsesproblematikken kan udgøre et særligt problem. To efterfølgende rapporter gennemgår Natura 2000-områderne i henholdsvis Jylland og på Øerne, begge med omkringliggende havområder.
