The multipath reception of television image, commonly referred to as ghost, is a widespread problem. The successful implementation of a ghost canceling system requires that the transmitted video signal contains a training signal called a GCR signal. By comparing the received distorted GCR signal with a stored reference GCR signal, the receiver can configure an appropriate channel compensating filter to cancel the distortion introduced in the transmission path. The joint development group in Korea developed Korean standard GCR(KGCR) based on the ternary sequence and carried out the computer simulation and the laboratory and field test.

A signal processing system for wide aspect TV receivers is developed. The system can fit input images and subtitles to the wide screen fully automatically and can control picture quality in a non-linear way using FUZZY-Inference.

The paper describes the Multipurpose Scanning Rate Converter (MSRC) IC, which improves TV image quality applying advanced scanning rate and format conversion techniques. The device has been designed to be inserted in an IQTV receiver to remove interlaced scan-related artifacts. The MSRC has been integrated using the 0.7 um CMOS technology, following a mixed custom/semicustom design approach.

It is well known that current TV systems are suffering from uncomfortable visual artifacts such as an edge flicker, an interline flicker and a line crawling, due to the inherent nature of the interlaced scanning process. Besides, the increasing demands of large TV screens recently have turned the problem of reducing visible line structures in a TV screen into an important issue. To lessen the visual affects of those artifacts, a technique known as an interlaced to progressive conversion (IPC) technique has been widely studied in various shapes. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for interlaced to progressive conversion, referred to as a directional correlation dependent interpolation filtering (DIF) algorithm, which is composed of a correlation-dependent linear interpolation for a signal in the low horizontal frequency band and a line doubling method for a signal lied in the high horizontal frequency band. In essence, the DIF algorithm splits the horizontal frequency band of a given input 2-Dimensional signal into two adjoint signals and apply two isolated interpolation schemes for the respective bands. In the algorithm, we develop a directional correlation dependent interpolation technique depending on the spatial correlations between the spatially symmetric samples in the observation sliding window centered at the sample to be estimated. Computer simulations and the hardware implementation of the proposed algorithm to evaluate its performance are also rigorously evaluated. To be specific, we design a chip for Luminance/Chorominance Interpolation with Peaking process (YCIP) which has been tested with a real sequence of LDP images. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and the high performance of the YCIP in the proposed problem.

This paper presents a novel approach for the luminance compensation problem which utilizes only the nonlinear gamma compensated components of the luminance signal. The proposed technique is based on nonlinear networks whose coefficients have been adaptively trained to perform luminance compensation. The obtained result can be easily implemented in real time, and the compensation scheme offers versatility, in the sense that it can be applied either at the transmitter or at the receiver.

In an MPEG[1] video coding system, a color component downsampling from 1050 2:1 60 Hz to 525 1:1 30 Hz line scan formats must be carried out on the U and V color component source signals. One scheme presently used to accomplish the required U and V downsampling, called frame-based color subsampling, is thoroughly analyzed. In addition, field-based color downsampling is analyzed and compared with the frame-based color downsampling.

The introduction of wide-screen TV gives new opportunities for improvements in teletext and onscreen display performance. A new decoder design for both purposes anticipates a move towards higher level teletext transmissions in Europe. Deficiencies in existing decoders are overcome and special consideration is given to wide-screen TV applications. More than 40 characters per row can be displayed and examples are shown of how the extra character space might be used.

The Australian Productivity Commission will release a report concerning the future of broadcasting in the digital age in Sep 1999. The Commission is expected to propose speeding up the eight-year analog-digital simulcast television period to allow the release of spectrum for new competition. The Commission must balance the need for an efficient broadcasting system with maintaining diverse programming.

Consumers will be given more options, more services and greater variety in how they receive information from TV. Broadcasters and other service providers will have new opportunities for boosting their profitability. The electronics industry will gain a ready market for new television equipment and supplies. The marketplace will be stimulated by the entry of new products and services and by the innovative ways by which they are sold. Finally, governments will be able to generate more revenues from channel licensing. However, although digital TV appears to be a dream product, there are still many questions about its economics that need to be answered. These include the cost of the new services and the willingness of consumers to pay for such services.
